Apparently its not a good enough reason... I have cited some other reasons too in order to put it off a year

That's bloody ridiculous, I'd understand if your employer was obliged to pay you in full, but you shouldn't have to suffer financially for it.
Like I said in an above post Stuart, just say you know the person or know of them and you won't have to do it, so I'm lead to believe anyway
