I had to have mine put to sleep in December as he was bleeding internally from a tumor and was too weak to operate on - broke my heart to see him slip away.

We buried him in a box in the front garden - my 9 year old son wrote on the box "gone but not forgotten"

Awww Joff, i feel for you bud, i lost my eldest cat last year, she was 15 years old and way too young to have gone but she had a growth in her throat and couldnt eat or breathe properly, i had to make the decision to have her put to sleep, i was truly gutted

He Got in a fight a few months ago with another cat and got his eye torn open, never went out after. He went downhill after that really. He was about 14 but he was unhappy, took him to the vets several times and in the end there wasn't anything more they could do for him. The kids haven't noticed yet,

That's so sad. The poor bugger! I'm a big cat/dog lover, and know how much he will have meant to your family.
Not that it's much of a consolation, but at least you have him to lay to rest.
