Yeah thats pretty much how it is with nowadays paint systems...... Waterbourne bases do not flat easily and can be a pain if you have an imperfection that needs removing. Sometimes its actually easier to clear over and then just repaint later. From what Ive seen on american hotrod and similar they use solvent base and clear or solid colours. Which is why they sometimes apply as much as say ten coats of basecoat as they need the depth not only to achieve opacity but for when they wet flat it all before clearing. Obviously the solid colours are much easier as their a one stage hit and a flat/polish afterwards. Hopefully that makes sense!
