Yeah thats pretty much how it is with nowadays paint systems...... Waterbourne bases do not flat easily and can be a pain if you have an imperfection that needs removing. Sometimes its actually easier to clear over and then just repaint later. From what Ive seen on american hotrod and similar they use solvent base and clear or solid colours. Which is why they sometimes apply as much as say ten coats of basecoat as they need the depth not only to achieve opacity but for when they wet flat it all before clearing. Obviously the solid colours are much easier as their a one stage hit and a flat/polish afterwards. Hopefully that makes sense!

I agree with others posting. The information is a great read. You can go more technical if you wish as I'm really interested in the techniques involved! They make a great read!

Just look gorgeous that... great work.

My NOva was painted with waterbased paint and it was base coat colour first and then lacquer directly on top with no sanding.

I try to keep my posts informative yet not too long and boring! I guess the only way to learn is to be hands on however you've got big balls if you go for it .

Cheers Simon, I think If I went more technical some wouldnt understand and find it boring. I just try to explain the basic theory behind why I do things the way I do. However I know some would go about things differently but If the end result is the same then so be it. Everyone has their own preference/methods etc.

    Hey guys,

    This eves update then.......

After all flat and polishing was complete the car literally went back together within a few hours. The rear screen went in and the tailgate was built up followed by doors, wings and later I got the bumpers back on. Here's a few shots.......

    Front.......

    And the rear.........

In the meantime Graeme had dropped my 195/40 tyres off so I left these with my local tyre fitters to be built up onto the RL7's. That eves I had the rear of the car up on stands waxoiling the insides of the quarters so thought It would be an ideal opportunity to see how one looked........

The morning after I still had some paint to complete being the wing mirror covers, petrol flap,no plate light and front toe eye cover to complete all the grey plastics. Once they were back in place I really needed to get the car cleaned as it was a mess and covered in allsorts. So I bolted the rest of the new wheels on and then a good jetwash was in order......

Later once Id got it clean and dry I spent the afternoon sealing, polishing and waxing the paintwork to great effect. Here are some shots........

I was really pleased with how it was now looking...... All the grey plastics were now smooth and the same colour as well as the wheels. Which I also think look really well. I know Its still a bit high at the moment but once the Gaz coilovers/eccentric topmounts are fitted we should see a change to that.
