Ah, the mythical 'police auction' . If I had quid for every time i heard that and the car/bike turned out to be stolen, i'd been on the ferrari owners forum right now!

stolen vehicles are +ve id'd and returned (to owner or insurance company), if not they are destroyed. Never auctioned......seized vehilces eg. no insurance/abandoned vehicles, are disposed of at the discretion of the recovery/storage agent, either by scrapping, auction or even ebay i've seen, yours could be one of the latter....

i doubt he was driving it unless he was rolling, it didnt even run...

police lifted it for no tax thou, but he is appealing as it was in a private carpark in a residential area.
