Fook me, its suprising what a bumper hides.

The beam is an easy fix at least.

Good luck :)

Lee
07-10-07, 01:19 PM
Blimey, not seen a beam rot out like that before!!

Iain
07-10-07, 01:31 PM
Have fun rebuilding it, hopefully the pics are the worst of it.

07-10-07, 01:39 PM

You never told me you had that much rust lol ... Or didn't you know??

Good luck with the rebuild.

Adam
07-10-07, 01:57 PM
You never told me you had that much rust lol ... Or didn't you know??

MOT guys probably been poking at it, causing the holes.

NovaLad
07-10-07, 01:59 PM
My uncle only checked my sills, legs, arches and a bit of the bay and all was free of rust apart from the arches.

Looking at that is making me wonder what it is like under my bumper:(

shy witness
07-10-07, 03:46 PM
looks nasty enough

but all easily sorted really

good luck mate

Dave.
07-10-07, 05:06 PM

might have to take mine off.. hope it isnt as bad as that

good look von!

vaughanmc
07-10-07, 06:20 PM
I didn't know about the rust but I knew about that rear beam

It will all be sorted sooner or later as I have plenty of time

Cheers for the 'good lucks' etc :)

vaughanmc
09-10-07, 07:05 PM
Me and my mate is going to get the front wings off then get her up off of the back wheels and take the alloys off so they don't get damaged

I think she'l be getting a new nearside wing as well :)

I'll see if I can talk my mum and dad into a respray once its all done..

moffat
10-10-07, 03:05 PM
good luck mate

greg1.4
10-10-07, 09:30 PM
yep, good luck..agree with you doing it now while its off the road anyway. didnt realize your nova was quite as bad matey!

its all pretty easy to sort though. hardest bit is probably cutting/drilling old panel and crossmember out. i would advise putting a crossmember in aswell as front panel. get a complete front panel which includes crossmember.

hope we can meet up and have minted wee novas to take pics of sometime..

Greg

vaughanmc
11-10-07, 04:56 PM
Had the guy who done most of the work on it check the front end over he said it only needs some bits - So it will be getting a lower front panel and a passenger light socket/panel

Then the other wee bits of welding here and there then it can go again for another MOT :)

vaughanmc
17-10-07, 01:22 PM
Picked up this tonight. Thought I would put the front end back together to see what it'l look like

Going to get it done grey like the back bumper and put my red stripe in:

i actually like the white against the red :)

should look good in grey
is it genuine, or fibreglass copy

vaughanmc
19-10-07, 03:44 PM
Genuine one I'd reckon - I'll need to check it for a GM stamp

Got my aim set:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/TotalVX1.jpg
Don't want the bumper as shiny as that - but it would do..

Adam
19-10-07, 04:04 PM
You got the tow eye cover?

GaryVaux's nova is a very cool car indeed.

Iain
19-10-07, 04:05 PM
If it's white and unpainted it may be a fibreglass one, I think all GM ones came in grey plastic.

vaughanmc
19-10-07, 04:12 PM
Its a genuine GM one - Got the wee stamp on the back of it - Been painted before - Its cracked down the bottom

Not got a towing eye cover, wouldn't mind one - Also want to big mouth the bumper..

Is that easy??

Iain
19-10-07, 04:14 PM
This is how I made my big-mouth GSi front (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=597921&postcount=36), there's also a guide on Topbuzz I think.

vaughanmc
19-10-07, 04:18 PM
I'll give it a go on mine - Not complaining, got the bumper in a swap for 1/2 working Nova SRi clocks :)

Dave.
19-10-07, 07:53 PM
get the god dam thing legal first!!

vaughanmc
20-10-07, 06:46 PM

vaughanmc
12-11-07, 07:37 PM
Finally managed to get a back beam!

Got it all degreased last night and power-washed it all

Rubbed it down with a wirebrush and powerwashed it again to remove what was left of the crap

Letting it dry now then going to give it a few coats of black hammerite!

Pics soon...

vaughanmc
13-11-07, 07:37 PM
Got my back beam that I had been after for a good while as mine had a hole - Will get better pics once its off the car

Heres the one I got from a scrappy - Clean as anything with some minor surface rust:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/My%20Nova/NovaRebuild15.jpg

De-greased the full thing and pressure washed it, wirebrushed it all and powerwashed it again

Finally giving it a few coats of black hammerite:

...Till the next update!

getting there now mate looking a bit more solid that the old beam

vaughanmc
13-11-07, 10:08 PM
Aye its a much better one :)

Can't wait to see it on with the Red Drums - Should be some contrast :)

Adam Moran
13-11-07, 10:43 PM
Instead of red drums either get some new ones (quite cheap) or paint them silver with a coat of clear gloss

makes it look alot better though the alloys and non-chav

Good work tho, nice little car

vaughanmc
03-12-07, 01:59 PM
Finally got the back beam finished and all painted up

Looks quite smart I must say:

Next on the list: A full front panel

craig green
03-12-07, 02:16 PM
Get the paint off the end plates though. You dont want the stub axles coming loose if the paint lifts.

I wire wheeled mine off yesterday.

vaughanmc
03-12-07, 03:23 PM
Aye I didn't think they were to be painted

But my dad said do the lot...

That will be fixed up soon enough, cheers Craig! :)

Adam
03-12-07, 03:51 PM
Looks a nice job mate.

vaughanmc
03-12-07, 03:55 PM

29-12-07, 05:17 PM
Vaugh - did you get a FULL front panel including box section?

That looks like the skin only...

My front panel was very similar to yours (had rotted right through) but I needed to replace the box section thats behind the skin as that was corrupted also. I just bought the lower section though (dont need the lights due to my Punto lights going in)

Local garage did it for me in 3 days - took him 2 days to get the old one off!

vaughanmc
29-12-07, 05:20 PM
Aye it has the crossmember where the radiator bolts on to etc - Angle of the pic, sorry about that :)

29-12-07, 07:19 PM
looking good vaughan..

shouldnt take much more than a weekend to fit the front panel..will only take a few hours welding..the bit that takes the time is getting the old one off..

vaughanmc
13-01-08, 10:20 PM

Well I drew Novas and the nut covers were body-colour

Had to do it with my real one lol

it is great that these panels are still available. how is the fit? do they need to be fettled/scared into positions or do they violate with other parts?

vaughanmc
02-02-08, 04:48 PM
Don't have a clue mate - Cut the old panel out, tack the new one on, check fitment, then put on the real welds

I think that was the plan of attack with mine :)

I doubt they'd be able to request all drivers under the new age limit to retest.
It'd just be a new age limit for new drivers.

Got all the underside of the car undersealed with the spray on stuff - Went on well with no problems, easier than the brush I found

I still need to brush the inner arches - They have been done anyway but theres some primer overspray on them

The front end has all been done with Body Schutz along with the front inner arches :)

My dad also put on the front anti roll bar (in red) which looks awsome from underneath

Next in-line should be the painting then MOT

My dad brought home my Corsa GSi wheels tonight with 4 decent 185/55/14 tyres which is a pretty hard size of tyre to get, so he says:

We put the back two on to see what it looks like and it looks quite good, sorry about the s*it pic lol

Rubbed down my front wing and put some etch primer on it just to stop any rust from happening - Will be going for paint soon anyway I think:

Aye mate - Dad done it and put a bit of solder in...

Works like a champion :)

ade
04-03-08, 10:18 PM
looking good!

word of advice - dont expose the primered car areas to the weather (eg arches and your freshly painted wing) - primer is by definition an undercoat and not water resistant - when you apply the top coat of paint (the colour) some of it absorbs into the primer - so on this premise any water will also absorb and get to your panels!

This is especially important in the current weather conditions with all the salt on the roads!

Ade

Adam
10-03-08, 04:29 PM
Does look tidy.
Are you having the primered bits professionally sprayed?
I hope you've cut out any rust on the rear arches because if not it WILL come back through again in no time.

vaughanmc
10-03-08, 05:31 PM
Aye the back arches have been sorted very very well

And all the primered bits will be painted professionally - I think we're going to see about a price tonight

Paint the front wing, passenger sill, 2 back arches and paint and fit the spoiler...

Adam
10-03-08, 05:33 PM
Cool :)

They will have to respray the whole rear 1/4...

vaughanmc

My dad is organising it so I don't really know..

PS - still dont like them wheels on it :(

Adam

DW-Nova
17-03-08, 09:31 PM
Good progress mate but no offence the wheels really spoil the car, 3 spokes have never suited any car! let alone the angular nova, as has been said before it's gonna need quite alot of paint to get it to match properley, if i was you i'd put new rear arches in the car before shelling out on painting, if they have been fixed with filler it's just time before the rust comes back out, it may appear that you have got all the rust out but trust me there will still be some there, theyre only about ?12 for the repair panels so if i was you this would be the first thing i did, good luck with the rest of the project mate, just take car when you pass your test not to smash the nova up or yourself, it's really easy to end up driving like an idiot when you pass your test as i did but i really aint worth it, anyway look forward to seeing the next update.

vaughanmc
17-03-08, 10:05 PM
Cheers for that mate - I'll get it all painted up and mint in the future when I'm driving it

As my dad says: No point in spending all the money for it to be run about and pick up scratches and dents before I can even drive it

Which I'd say is a fair point

Another wee update before PVS:

New leads, dizzy-cap and rotar arm went on along with the car having a full service a couple of weeks ago - All genuine GM parts used!

The front mudflaps are now on as well

Need to try and get some measurements for the sideskirts because every idea that everyone else used doesn't work...

Vaughan!

Had this alloy lying about my room for a year or two now, so decided to put it to good use

My Nova needed a spare and I demanded an alloy lol

So I put one of my bedroom pieces to use on the car

Quite a tidy touch if I say so myself:
