View Full Version : Irmscher Sprint C Replica C20LET
The bodyshop will sort any probs i'm sure. Glad you found the bungs, i want to replace all of mine too. Exhaust looks good, needs a nice clean up now...lol
I have been looking at metal polishing kits for my grinder, just wasnt sure if it was worth it or not.
They are, work very well. Bit of a long process and you'll get back acke. But then do and will give a good finish.
Managed to spend some more time on the exhaust today.
first up was to remove the old bracket for the entire hanger. It had been moded in the past in a away which ment you couldn't change the rubbers.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1347_zps3804804f.jpg
So grinded it off and cleaned up the area ready for welding.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1348_zpscf4e3be9.jpg
I then refitted the exhaust and loosely hung the rubbers and hangers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1351_zpsa9011111.jpg
and tacked into position, it's not easy welding under the car!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1352_zps6b39246d.jpg
Removed the exhaust again, and welded the hangers up. Not the greatest looking welding but functional.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1353_zps7808fbf1.jpg
Next up was to weld the supporting bracket back onto the silencer
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1354_zpsf9519bce.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1355_zpsf6185e41.jpg
thats the centre section finished.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1356_zps19eb32bf.jpg
Refitted to the car and luckily the hangers are perfect.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1359_zpsba059aef.jpg
all that left was to cut down and fit the tail pipe, only had time to tac in into place, will weld it up tomorrow.

These exhaust looks very very nice, well done!
Like what you did with the hangers, rear pipe looks a perfect fit.
Been busy again today, started by finishing the exhaust. I took the backbox off and fully welded the tailpipe on. Fitted it all back up with some exhaust paste and run the engine up for half hour. I really happy with the final result.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1385_zps9991110f.jpg
Loads of clearance over the rear beam.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1382_zps38498280.jpg
Tailpipe comes out nice and straight
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1389_zpse581868c.jpg
next was to fit my new number plate holders. This was a bit of a trial really as I wasn't sure if I'd like them. As it happens I think there going to suit the car really well. What our thoughts?

Clocks fitted and tested, dash is pretty much complete now. Just got to complete the gauges now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1371_zpsc675c472.jpg
New air filter fitted, it fits nicely and only cost £25.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1366_zps68a88307.jpg
Also managed to fit the last central locking which completes all the door internals.
rear calipers have been ordered and should be delivered next week. Once they are fitted I can make the last two brake lines and get the car back on it wheels!

looks soo good! can't wait to see it finished
Nice work, i think i like the plate holder, exhaust looks good too.
Finished work late today and have football tonight so only had a spare half hour to wire up the foglights with some connectors. This way it will be nice and easy to remove them

lol, was my first day today and had to work on. All overtime will be going to towards the wedding rather than the car so the budget exhaust will have to do.
These exhaust looks very very nice, well done!
Cheers!
Like what you did with the hangers, rear pipe looks a perfect fit.
Nice work, i think i like the plate holder, exhaust looks good too.
the hangers where a bit of a nightmare but seem to have turned out quite well. The plate holders have grown even more on me since fitting them so there definitely staying.
looks soo good! can't wait to see it finished
Cheers, I'm itching to see it back on it wheels.
Very nice work :)
Thanks!
Made the rear brake lines tonight.

then fitted them along with the rear calipers. Both sides are done just forgot to take a picture.

front fog lights are now fitted and working. Tomorrows job is to finish the front brake lines and think about filling it all with brake fluid. The list of jobs is getting shorter and shorter by the day. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Not painting the callipers? are all of the lines braided? or just the line to the calliper?
All the lines are braided from front to back, a very costly choice!
calipers will be painted eventually but it's just to cold to piss about with that at the mo and I want to get the car Mot'ed before Christmas.

Nice progress, quick question, how ate you goig about biasing the rear brakes to stop lock up?
As ive heard of a simple solution from using a valve at the rear take off of the mc from off a saloon, just not sure if it works.

Small cut out, out of bonnet. This had to be done as since welding the strengthening plates in for the brake servo, it has raised it up enough for the bonnet to sit on it. Bonnet now closes perfect.

Hope you take this the right way, i remember a few years back when we were at billing, the car looked good, but i do remember speaking to you, and you weren't happy, and like most know our own cars flaws etc..
From memory it was a bit rough round the edges here and there, but im sure you had only just put the kit on?
BUT..
You have excelled, and made an awesome car mate, all the hard work and detail is paying off, it's easy worthy of a feature once completed. :)

I agree with Scott! If this doesn't get a feature then something isn't right ;) lol stunning motor with so much attention to detail!

Taken the right way mate. Your totally right, I havnt been happy with it for years. This rebuild is all about getting everything spot on, unfortunately the paint work is still letting it down. Time will tell if that side of things comes good, I'm just gutted that all the nice freshly painted parts are proberly going to get covered in dust and overspray when it's repainted.
Really nice to here the positive comments, thanks. A feature would be great, something I've wanted for the past 10years,lol.

Again thanks for the compliments. it's the small details that make all the difference , unfortunately there the hardest/ most expensive bits to get right
Been struggerling for time over the last week but finally got it on the ground!!!!
will do a full update later but here's a quick shot of it on the floor.

Thanks benn, that's great to here. Going to give Keith a call soon. I want to give it a good clean but don't want to use anything that may cause trouble when it gets painted again.
any thoughts?
Warm soapy water. With the smallest amount of shampoo in poss. Most shampoo's arnt to waxey so should be ok.
Just off for its first drive to the mot station.........

Welldone matey. Brilliant work and a fantastic looking car.
Have you booked the car in to be sorted yet mate?
Funny you should ask that dan, I spoke to the today. I've got to take it over for them to have a look then book a time to get it sorted. Hopefully get a day off next week.
ive been waiting to get the running issues sorted out first which I managed to sort out last week. Distributer cap was breaking down by the looks of it. Fitted a spare and its running fine.

Great news mate! I was thinking you would be chasing that misfire for a while!.
could you cover the flocked parts in cling film when it goes in for paint?
Wrap the steering wheel and anything flocked up. Save the dirt getting in. Looking forward to seeing it up close.
Best looking ugly car in the world. Fact.
lmao @ that :) True though.
Nice work, car looks good! ;)
Whilst I've been fault finding the misfire I've had the actuator piped straight to the compressor housing so it was running a fixed 7psi of boost. So this afternoons job was to pipe the aml valve back into resume full boost.
with that done i took it out for a test run to see how it runs. Well that was an hour ago and I'm still grining from ear to ear. It's running the best it ever has and with the lsd fitted its putting the power down so much better!
i forgot how brutal these things feel!
Good to hear your enjoying it.

Can't believe you parked in MY car park.... And didn't come see me!
Lol, you should of popped out. Wasn't sure if you would be there or not.
Ill be back over there on sat 1st feb if your working.
I heard a louder car, but didn't think it would be you.. Thought you'd poke your head in the door....
I'm in on the first, make sure you let me know when you come over/in.
Will do.
Droping the car off on the 1st so the paint suppliers can come have a look at it, then work should commence on the 8th to sort it out. Keith said 7-10 days so fingers crossed by the end of feb it should be done and off to get the graphics made.
Sounds good, He's a good man, so i knew you'd have no probs. Hopefully i'll seee it then when you drop it off..
What front brakes are you using?
I'm using wilwood 4 pots with 280mm discs.
Any luck sorting the car mate?

Only two i got, was being cleaned and masked up.
Car was sanded right back to the primer/first coat of base to get a smooth finish. Roof and pillars where bare metaled due to solvent pop from tomuch paint and uneven drying.
On to paint!
Arron who is the new painter is much better. He lays down a damn good coat of paint.
The car was painted using a slow hardener, so it would flow better and give a better finish.
Choking me out a bit...

I hope the freshly painted bumper is in good order, I would be happy with it sat on a waste bin
I didn't even notice that in the picture.
That's a primered bumper. Doing it last bit of drying in the sun (was baked but taken out to air dry to just and keep the crazing probs down)
Last night the nova was finally delivered home, was to dark to have a good look over so today with the sun shinning it was the first time I've had a chance to see the results.
thankfully they are 10 times better than the previous paint job. I'm yet to find any issues and the finish is beautiful! Credit to the lad who painted it, he's really has done a great job.
ill get some decent pics up soon but for now here's one taken with my phone.

I've gots loads of pics on my phone but need to borrow an sd reader for my iPad.
Ive taken a few pics on my phone of today's update. Since having to cut my door pockets down for the door bars I've been struggling for somewhere to put things such as my phone and wallet which when driving long distance is a pain. So I've started to make a door/speaker pocket.

Been cracking on with the passenger side speaker pod, thankfully it's almost finished. Couldn't resist trial fitting the drivers side.
I know it's not the prettiest looking thing but its more function over form.

Can't you just put wallet and phone in the standard door pockets mate? Think the pod looks abit out of place
Is a bit hight, will it not hit the winder motor? Is it high to clear the cage bar? Could you do a cut out around it?
Can't you just put wallet and phone in the standard door pockets mate? Think the pod looks abit out of place
i can put you can't get to it when the door is closed because of the door bar, which is a pain when driving to lemans. Once it's all flocked it will look less out of place.
Is a bit hight, will it not hit the winder motor? Is it high to clear the cage bar? Could you do a cut out around it?
no it won't hit the motor, the reason it's high is because its covering the hole where the electric window switch use to be.
during the winter I will buy new door cards and ill be re making the door pocket so it ties in with the original one but that will take alot of time and for now I just want it ready for the summer.
Really need ICE? I guess the best music is the engine in this car.
Really need ICE? I guess the best music is the engine in this car.
Again it's really only because there's already holes in the door cards and its nice to have something when driving long distance. The engine tends to get a bit boring after 2 hours......
It's still cool mate! ;)
You can also install the electrical windows (and mirrors) buttons to the door (like in the Cavaliers).
Just realised I've not updated this since having the graphics done, so Here's a few pics from billing.

I don't care what any tool says about your reg plates, you have done an amazing job on this car over the years, imo it's the most individual car out there, and I personally think you deserve a magazine feature more than most.

Here's my latest job. I've been hunting for a mps of fearless strut brace for a long time with no joy, so I set about looking for a strut brace with a similar shape. I ended up going for a Citroen ax brace, looks like the right kind of shape, will offer it up over the weekend and set about modding it to fit.

To be honest I'm surprised someone isn't knocking them out as there still a market for them. I'm tempted to make some it they would be steel not ally.
I looked for the MPS one for ages. Found MPS them self's to be **** holes.

well after a couple of hours of cutting, grinding and welding, the strut brace is almost ready for powder coating.

I had a good look round at billing on more than one occasion and thought It looked fantastic. Paint & body looked just as good as anything I could achieve. Thumbs up from me!
Edit.... Thought about powder coating the expansion tank, boost pipe and adding a scuttle cover? I'd say you be almost at perfection then!
Nick.
Thanks nick!
Funny you should mention the boost pipe and header tank, I'd decided this morning to get them done the same time as the strut brace. They will be done either end of this week or next week.
i do have a scuttle panel cover but it needs trimming to fit around the washer bottle. To be honest its seen better days so may go for a carbon fibre one.

i loved having the chance to have a good look around your car at billing, as scott say's it is the most individual nova out there i think, there is not another one anything like it ( unlike all the nova sports that are about lol ) it was great to mate and talk to you aswell at billing.
Brace is very nicely done. I like that.
Had the centres of the strut brace end plates bored out to 80mm today which means its ready for powder coating tomorrow. Will have it back Friday along with header tank and boost pipe.

Awesome mate, really like what you have done in the bay now, looks even better!..
Scuttle with cutouts for caps looks good and actually practical too! With some neater cuts around the hinges and maybe some extra edging trim that would look spot on as it is.
Just gets better each time I look.
One thing, the red Dump valve.... Needs changing or painting....

I've spotted that, a few Corsa's have popped up on FB in there... What can i say, i can pick a good place.
All sorted then mate? Have you fitted the stage 3 stuff yet?
Cars all good at the mo Dan, tried the phase 3 but it just didn't feel as good as the phase 2, so have switched back for now. Would need a new wideband gauge and injectors to do the phase 3 properly and don't want to spend the money this year.
Going to just enjoy it for the rest of the summer and any further changes will take place over the winter.
Sounds like a plan mate!
Still saving for the wedding?
So it's that time of year again to get the nova out of hibernation and crack on with a few jobs. First thing is to replace the throttle cable that snaped last year. I managed to find a gm one in Germany so ordered it Thursday night and it arrived this morning.
the next job is to sort out my front brakes, I've always had to run around 7mm of spaces to get the wheels to clear the wilwood calipers. This means the wheels some times catch the arches. My plan is to get some custom bells and rotors to enable me to move the calipers further in towards the hub enabling Me to remove the spacers.
aiming to get everything measured up this week and gets the bells and rotors ordered
.
I like the brake mods. Close to what i'm gonna do.
Sounds good mate! Hate spacers!
Will have to see the car at some point!

tell me about it, I've had them ever since I fitted the brakes and now I'm finally going to sort it properly
ill let you know once I've got it MOT'ed
Got the car up in the air tonight to look at my front brake options, unfortunately my options are limited. There's no room between the disc and the hub to move the disc further inbound.
So My only other options is to try and find a slimer version of the size calipers I have, or drop my disc size from 280mm to 256mm.
Have a look at the compbrake pro race 4 caliper it's very small ,i fitted a 275 mm disc with these under a 13 inch split rim

Novas blasting down a strip is always good toymex, footage of twags LET would be brilliant I reckon.
I have got some you could try if ,
you are passing Fleet at any time you can grab them
Do you mean you have some compbrakes calipers I can try for size?
ben, I'd be interested to hear what you are planning with your brakes?
I'm gonna go with different calipars i think, that are aerial? mounted so i can make a easier and nicer bracket and then do bell and rota set up...
Do you mean radial mounted Benn?
Do you mean you have some compbrakes calipers I can try for size?
Yes I have the ones from my race car you can try for size these are radial mount I think I have the brackets you could try too. They will need spacing further off for 280 mm disc as they are designed for a 275
Do you mean radial mounted Benn?
Isnt that what the caliper bolts on to the bracket? i want calipers with built in brackets in the casing. as then a spacing bracket is easyer to make and space...
Usually get post mount and radial mount Benn.
I called them post mount, but sure on the AP website they called them something else... Either way..
Firstly a big thank you to Jezz (toymex) for lending me his set of compbrake calipers so I can try them for size. My plan is to keep my 280mm discs and as Jezz is running 265 discs I had to have a play with some washers etc to space the caliper out.
The results are positive and the calipers fit under the wheels without any spacers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/image_zpsimbhdpyv.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/twag/media/image_zpsimbhdpyv.jpg.html)
So with the calipers position sorted I've worked out some dimensions and have ordered some aluminium bar to machine some new brackets.
I've had to send some photos and dimensions of Jezz's calipers to compbrake as on the website they show the radial mount holes being 120mm apart but the ones I have borrowed off Jezz are 130mm apart
Nice work on the calipers. Should be much nicer..
Cheers Benn.
calipers are being delivered on Monday along with the aluminium bar so hopefully things will speed up next week.
I measured the wheel spacers I have been using and they are 8mm, so should give me enough room for my Toyo R888's.

Pretty! Still radial mount tho? Will you not get the probs like the Willwoods?
Worst case could you get the aluminium center peice skimmed down to make the caliper narrower ? Maybe just have to get abit skimmed off new brake pads each time?
Yeah still radial mounted, but these calipers are of a slimer design than the wilwoods.
Stumbled across a pic of this on RetroRides at RRG15, so have a thread bump!

Awesome, didn't know you did the hill.
Looked great when i saw it. Sadly for a bad reason.
Was that when it was re painted Benn?
So unfortunately its bad news for updates........ Ive been using the car here and there over the christmas and new year period, yesterday i decided to give it a quick wash and put it back away when i noticed that the entire car is covered in micro blisters. Basically every panel has been effected. Im gutted as I've been so happy with the paint finish before this happened. Visited the Body shop yesterday and keith (the owner) struggled to explain why this has happened over a year after it was painted. Thankfully he has agreed to sort it out but wants to speak to the paint supliers first.
Just hope it can be sorted sooner rather than latter so i don't miss the show season and my annual trip to lemans.
Such a shame mate.
Do you keep a cover on it?
That fiesta I had was painted years ago no issues.
I put a cover on it and it came up in micro blisters on one side.

Shame on the paint. I must say it's looking absolutely incredible now with all the decals - love it!
Looking back through the thread I've realised i missed a couple of updates from last year. I finally managed to replace my brake calipers so i could remove my wheel spacers and stop the tyres scrubbing the arch.
After purchasing the callipers, i spent a while measuring, measuring and measuring again so i could design some custom brackets. A chap i work with machined them for me

he done a great job and it enabled me to remove the wilwood calipers and fit the new compbrake callipers whilst keeping the original discs.

Another ongoing issue i had was the gear linkage rubbing on the gear box causing one of the rose joint nuts to keep undoing. Difficult to explain and don't have many pics but basically i chopped up two linkages and welded one part on top of the other which lifted the fouling part off the gearbox.

Very nice brakes. Retaining standard discs has obvious benefits. Gutted about the paint issues though

Are those original discs? They look like they are on spigot rings.
Lastly, i was getting a little fed up with not having any matts that fitted perfect to the floor. I found a online supplier of a good quality car carpet and set about making my own matts, i wanted full length ones so they didn't move about but then was worried about them getting dirty............ So made another smaller set to go on top. Once i had the shape correct, i found a company that could overlock the edges.

When i said original discs, i ment from my wilwood set up.

No, I've never put a car cover on it in fear of scratching it. Its kept in a dry garage for 90% of the time.
Shame on the paint. I must say it's looking absolutely incredible now with all the decals - love it!
Cheers Keith! its frustrating because I'm going to have to have the decals made up again
Nice update!
Brakes look spot on now.
Body shop must be frustrated now.
What will they do with it now? As guess if it were a metal car you would have to bare metal it but can't really do that with the fibreglass kit? Then again of it's all over the car it must be a paint or prep issue.

How the hell can a expensive paint job that took bloody ages deteriorate so quickly after only a year, the company really need to sort this out as they messed you about long enough before if remember correctly.
This is one of the reasons I stopped with the doing up of cars, really hard to find decent trustworthy people, by the time you eventually do its cost a fecking fortune, hope you get this sorted for the show season.
I love this car btw ;)
Absolutely gutted to hear your having paint related issues again! Car looked fantastic last year :( I'm afraid to say their is only one way they could possibly guarantee you will have no further issues and that's to bare metal the shell and start again.

Nick, please for the love of PNG help twag out, every car you've ever had painted put most expensive brand new cars to shame ;)

Ah I see. I have a spare set of those nearly new if you need any. I got rid and run Mini Cooper D discs now, as the Wilwood ones as well as being very close also don't quite run through the centre of the calliper.
Nick, please for the love of PNG help twag out, every car you've ever had painted put most expensive brand new cars to shame ;)
Cheers Dave, but really the best advice I can give is above. After all twags work I know it will be a real headache but if it was mine and I wanted it mint then I'd strip it and have the affected areas media/glass blasted to remove all the paint/materials on the car. I honestly cannot see how the bodyshop can guarantee it otherwise.
Nick.
Cant believe it.
I love how all painter's first reactions are 'I need to speak with the paint supplier', when what they actually mean is 'I need to go and slap the person who prepped it'

If you want to cut ties with this guy and take it somewhere else I strongly recommend Nick Gwinnett at Nuffield Accident Repair in Poole. His work is as good as it gets.

Personally Twag has been messed about and ripped off, this sort of think boils my piss, we all work damn hard for hobbies and for Cowboys in any trade to piss people about is utter shit... Yes a rant but bloody worth it after this total total mess.
Ben seems to know the guys who've done this job as I remember him commenting that he had correspondence with them, please Ben make me understand this company because I certainly would give them a mega wide birth... Second rant over!!!
Hard to cut ties at this point as it would be 3k down the drain.
It is such a shame though as things like this can cause you to throw the towel in.
Mate is there any things you would change again? ie use it as an opportunity to strip the car down and get things 100% how you want them?.
Ben seems to know the guys who've done this job as I remember him commenting that he had correspondence with them, please Ben make me understand this company because I certainly would give them a mega wide birth... Second rant over!!!
They are the bodyshop i use. I know them all everywell.
I'll be honest, i'm gutted to see this happen, as the first time the car was in i was very disappointed with them and the mistakes that where made with the car. Well more embarrassed really.
As i had recommended them. I warned Craig that they will be late, as they always are. They always have been and will always be utter shit with time. But there work will always be 100% and if there is every a problem, they will fix it. They can and do a fantastic job. Which they will on this.
Which they will in this case.
I think they where shocked to see it too after such a time.
The car was taken to bare metal the first time, due to 1k paint. And yes i do fully agree with Nick, that it will need it again. Which is what i believe the bodyshop are already thinking.
Sadly the guy that painted has left now. But i've seen and fixed this type of solvent pop before and bare metal is always how its been done before. So will need to be this time.
But i'm sure they will be talking it all over with Craig soon.

How you getting on Craig?
Was wondering the same, hope it's getting sorted
Thanks for all the comments, I think I've just been really unlucky with this paint job. As Benn has said they can and have produced some really good work, Benns car is a prime example.
i simply can't justify paying someone else to do the work after what I paid originally. Thankfully Keith has agreed to repaint the car and its booked in for the 1st of April. Can't say I'm looking forward to going through this all again but fingers crossed it will be ok.
Im booked to go to Lemans in June so needs to be a reasonably quick turnaround.
Good luck mate! Glad it's getting sorted.
Does much need stripping or is engine bay ok?
Cheers mate. No the engine bay won't be stripped as that seems to be ok at the moment as is the inside.

I totally feel your pain. You could compare it to the engine issues I have had from day one. Expensive, frustrating, demoralising and down right unnecessary.
The engine bay was painted at a different time and was only painted once. Not like the issues the out sides had.
I'll also keep as much of an eye as i can on it.
That's good then Benn, fingers crossed this time
Conspiracy theory: The paint is affected by Benn's greasy fingers all over it between primer/paint/lacquer.
Fingers crossed this is sorted, I can imagine how frustrating it must be thinking 'Yep thats pretty much finished' then getting stripped again.
I only ever touch a car with clean hands.
