Where they meant to be? I thought (as i think Keith does) that the arches where being bolted on after? As he was talking of flat and polishing then bolting them on...
Elgan has one for sale, I think mk1 lights always look gappy
I saw that but think its a bit expensive and doesn't come with the lights.
If one turns up for reasonable money I will give it a go.

I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and yes he thought I wanted them bolted on after but I said I wanted them blended into the body. I've always wanted it that way.
Front crossmember was supposed to be cut back and boxed in to.
Ill give him a call tomorrow.
Great work mate! Was going to ask about the front panel, will look spot on boxed!.
Bay looks good smoothed, are the arches bolted from the inside?.

Cheers mate, i love the engine bay, miles better than id hoped for. To be honest the same goes for the rest of the body. The work is second to none.
Only problem with it, is that its made me have to make the rest of the car to same standard. Ive spent a fortune at the powder coater's.

Oh that's not good, i didn't know any of that.
Oh that's not good, i didn't know any of that.
Sorted now, i phoned keith earlier and the reason he hasnt fitted the arches is because he wanted to paint behind them first. He was fitting the arches today and preping to paint the whole car again on Monday.
Me being my forgetfull self forgot to ask about the crossmember. I can live with how it is, i just wanted a bit more room to move the intercooler around.
Oh ok thats good. I know he wasn't happy wit the paint and was thinking of doing it again. But wasn't sure...
Surely better off doing it once mate? Get cross member done now, would only take a couple of hours on top, would drive me nuts knowing its like that behind the bumper!
Yeah but thats because your so anal it's taken you 3 years two find someone to paint your car, lol. It doesn't bother me what it looks like, I just fancied a bit more room for the IC.
Ill give him another call Monday.
lol yea that's true! Would have lost sleep over that cross member!
More work? Sh*t!
This will make you wet tho....

The new painter got worried as someone said you might use this to rally... I said "oh christ no, it'll be wrapped up and loved alot more now..."
someone said he might use this to rally...
I'd hunt him down like a pig if he rallied this.... It's far to sexual to see a rally stage lol
lol Craig wont, he's gonna love it when he sees it trust me.
Wow! F##king love it!
Can't wait to see it when I get back from lemans, as it will sat at home waiting for me!
Lol, not a chance of it being rallied. I'm looking at buying a carcoon to store it in so it stays tip top!

I'm not sure to be honest, I know it fits as it is but I've never been 100% happy with it. That's why I wanted the cross member cut back a bit.
You need to tell Keith asap if you want it cutting back more!
id get it done now if you have any doubts
Looking great!
Just get the cross member cut back to the rad holes mate so you have max room for the future.
Will be great to see it built back up!

Thats a shame :( but it does happen, I'm sure it'll get sorted.
Gutted for you, looked good in the pics, what's wrong with it? Nothing serious I hope
there's lots of small issues with it which need sorting before its rebuilt, unfortunatly because there spread across the car the whole thing will need repainting. So it will have to go back. Not going to go into to much detail untill I've met with the Bodyshop to sort it out.
But for the sack of progress here's some pics, obviously it looks great overall but I really want it perfect before progressing any further.

If your paying for something to be perfect you want it like that
Hope you get it sorted

Met with the Bodyshop today and went through the faults. It's being collected Monday to be sorted out. I've been told a week to sort so fingers crossed.

I'm going to be so picky with body shops when I rebuild mine next year for that same issue, hope it comes out better second time round!
Kev it was booked in with someone but I then changed to someone else should go in the next few months:)
Thing is you should be picky! You are paying a professional, IMO a car shouldn't reach a customer with a single imperfection.
If a normal person can look over a car in minutes and find faults you know a professional painter would pick them out in seconds with a trained eye so they know its left in that condition.

If I was quality control nowt would pass my standards lol

There's picky, then there's Benn.... lol
In my eyes there is no such thing as a perfect job. Near on yes.
I am pickie yes. Which is why id never paint my own car and doing some jobs make me so angry.
Ive seen bits on this, in my eyes its all stupid stuff that shouldnt have been missed.

There is close to perfect but IMHO on your own car every time you wash it you will always pick up on things wrong with the paint, its just life.

Very true, i do..lol But as said, near on.. Never seen perfect.
When i did my Tv shoot, the studio guys had shot a fully rebuilt Aston Martin a week before. I was so sorry when i dripped 2 drops of oil. The said Aston was leaking..... Oil, water, brake fluid, fuel... Guy told them it had just had a 20K rebuild.....
Just because it's rebuilt doesn't mean it wasn't rebuilt by monkeys with big pockets lol

Awesome. Proof bellends have too much money & sensible people operate close to skint.
I agree its difficult to get something perfect. I expected to going over it with a tooth comb and find the odd blemish.
when I spent a couple of hours going over it yesterday it's about 30 different faults. At least now they have a list to work to and as long as it gets sorted Ill be happy.
Unfortunately I Havnt heard anything today so doesn't look like its being collected tonight :-(

That's a shame, but they will fix the probs you've found.
And i believe it's getting collected tomoz due to Paul not working there anymore, they are renting him in for the recovery.
The main thing is the after service so good they are sorting it.
Shame about not being collected tho, would have only taken a phone call to say they couldn't make it etc.
When my car goes I'm just going to leave them too it as I will just get to picky!
I've only very breifly popped on, and some of the guys with working on the pass front arch at the time.
Yeah it got picked up on Wednesday and I gave them a list of faults. I'm just going to wait untill I get a call to come view it.

Sometimes faults can appear in time. I had my wifes rear bumper painted and I checked it before I took it. I have a very keen eye and found it to be pefect on collection. After a few days the paint started to craze so needed to be done again.

Benn do you work there or just help out?
I work over the road, pop in and help if i'm needed/free. (used to work there)
I hope so!!! I've still not heard from them. I was told it would take a week to sort the issues out..... That was 3 weeks ago.
I'm not going to lie I'm begining to loose my patience. What was supposed to be 3 weeks is now up to 15 weeks.
Just a phone call now and again to keep me up to date would help.
Always the way mate! I always think at first I don't want to hassle people/ rush them as you will get a better job, not sure if it works like that?!. But as you say most companies I've dealt with always lack communication, a 2 min phone call now and then would sort things right out, at this rate your going to miss the summer!

When it went back i thought im not going to keep calling hasseling them and checking progress ill just wait and to hear from them but like you said that obviously hasnt worked out well.
Ive aready missed 3 shows/events i had planned this year and i doubt it will make any this year at all now. To be honest I wish i hadnt bothered now and just enjoyed the car how it was.
Sure it will be worth it in the long run mate, this way you won't rush it and it will be ready to go for next year!
I'm hoping that they rung you today, as i told them they need too. But was told the car is now ready for repainting. Which is being done tomoz after a final block down on the primer (being done today)

Thanks Ben, yeah I spoke to Keith yesterday.
Going to see it tomorrow. Sounds funny but I'm a bit nervous about seeing it, if its not as good as I expect i don't know what to do next.
Fingers crossed.
I think it will be. I had a better look around it in primer and didn't see any bits.
It looks to me like they have been very thorough. Probably why its taken longer than expected
Good luck mate! Hope is all sorted for you today.

They have, all the things Craig wasn't happy with plus a few i've pointed out have all been done. The car was checked before paint too.
Didn't go in the end, spoke to them thismorning and was told it was painted yesterday but there was a small reaction on part of the shell. There's no point in me going untill its 100 % complete.
The bonnet vents are also causing a problem, the paint keeps cracking where they are bonded on. We are looking into ways around this, one of the options is to remove them and fit astra gte vents instead.
Cheers for the pics Ben. Is there any chance you can email me the full res pictures?
I've got some concerns with the fuel cap but can't see enough detail in the pics.
Twagtastic@hotmail.com
I bet the painters ready to slit his wrists by now! Pretty sure I would be..... Silvers show huge amounts of flaws that simply wouldn't show with many other colours so prep must be better to allow for this.
Benn... Are they using a proper low bake oven? If the vents and so on are causing problems due to materials used to fit them a better idea would be to not bake them and allow things to air dry instead. Especially when you know the car had such a poor job on it prior with low rate materials. My money says they won't show until after the bake cycle?
Twag..... Try not to let it get you down as I'm sure once its all complete it will be a cracking example. :)

My thoughts exactly!! Just the thought of it makes me shudder!

What about a louvred bonnet mate? They never were proper gsi vents were they? Did you cut them in in the end?.
Out of interest if some stuff has reacted now could other stuff show up months down the line?.
Bet the painter wishes the car had been dipped or blasted prior? May have worked out cheaper?

It has been getting me down but now ive excepted that I'm not going to make any shows this year it's taken the pressure off and I've put to the back of my mind.
To be honest I feel for the Bodyshop a bit now as it has been a bit problematic for them.
I am positive it will all be worth it when done

No they wernt proper Gsi vents and yes they where cut in. Louvres has crossed my mind but I think the gte vents will suit the period look of the car. The Gsi vents always looked a bit to modern.
Yes gte would be good. I had 1 fitted above the air filter on my old black nova.
Deffo best way to forget about a deadline will end up a better car in the long run.

.
Prob is it's due to the vents being fiber glass that's just been glued in. They arnt a perfect fit so they can move. It's that that is making the probs, i dont think heat or lack off that helps/makes it worse.

I quite simply do not bake fibreglass, carbon and such like materials.... Under heat they open up and the release agent comes out. Glues and repair resins also do the same so you've got to tred carefully. But I'm sure I'm not stating anything they don't already know. However if they are insisting on baking maybe you could just mention the air dry method as it may help them turn this motor around and get it back to twag.
Nick.
I'll suggest it tomoz to them.
I believe Craig is happy. And the car is going home Monday (earliest it can be delivered back)
The bonnet was sorted by removing the sealant Craig put in and using a proper bonda.
Yep, I went to view it on Tuesday and all is good!
Looking forward to getting it back Monday and cracking on with the rebuild!
Just got to remember where everything is and where it goes lol!
Great news Benn! I wouldn't have the patience to be a painter!.
Then vents must have been put in many years ago now!!
Don't scratch it then mate!! Will have to pop round for a look.

Do you wish you hadn't of bothered? You know it's going to be worth it and I'm sure this spray job ain't going to be cheap but it's going to be fantastic when you build it back up and I'm sure that I'm not the only one looking forward to the build. ;)
I may have dropped a few hints Craig wanted it back yes....
I'm just glad its finish and Craig is happy, i felt very bad when the probs arose as i had recommended them saying their work was good.
There was no need to feel bad, you can only recommend on your own experiences and its then out of your hands what happens.
The main thing is the car is done and to a great standard. :thumb:

Not at all now, I've been wanting to do this rebuild for years and now I look back whats a few extra weeks. I hope the rebuild lives up to expectations, at least now it's not going to be a mad rush.
Few pics taken on my phone yesterday. It's all finished and just waiting for it to be delivered back.

Excellent mate love the look and especially in silver works really well, only criticism is the bonnet vents not my taste at all, I think if cool louvres were on my door step I'd have them on everything lol, look forward seeing it back in one piece, are you putting the sprint decals on it?

Yes the decals are being put on as soon as it back together.
See when i saw the filler/cap firsdt time i didn't like it cause it sat on top... So so happy that i went over and they where working out how to sink it in.. Glad they took my advice on how to do it too. Looks much better now.

Relatively, since its been dropped of I've noticed a strange square patch on the drivers side rear arch, the recess for the filler cap is far from round and for some reason the passenger side gutter trim has chipped paint all along it. See pictures.
I've kind of lost the will to live with trying to get a perfect paint job. Keith did say he would sort any problems out. I love to say I've got my money's worth but I just can't help but think it could of been better.

Not sure what you mean with the kit, the rear arches are sealed to the body.

Shame on the filler cap as when i saw it the shape and fit was just right.
All I can think of with the rail is that they've caught it when mopping the roof. I'm gutted with the fuel cap because the recess is exactly the right depth for the cap to sit flush with the body but when I tried to fit the cap it just looks wrong where it is not round. The square patch in the pic is on the same arch so I might be able to get it all sorted at the same time.
Cheers!

I'd enjoy the rebuild then get the bodywork bits sorted, that square patch doesn't look too clever

Maybe yeah, still a odd place. Its a real shame on the filler as i saw it just before it was stopped and the fit was bang on, looks great. They must of messed it up after that sanding the stopper, no idea how tho.
The patch on the arch is very odd, asa there was no repair or anything and the shell and arches where all painted in one hit. So weird to get a mark like that.
Rebuilds looking great tho.

I was surprised when I tried the filler cap because the first time round it was the perfect shape but just not deep enough. Now it's the right depth but not the right shape. The square patch is bizarre because like you said there was no repairs there.
Are you just building it back to a stage and then return it for the repairs
I'm not sure at the moment, it does seem pointless the building it complete only to have to take the doors and windows back out. But on the overhand it's a nightmare getting it tailored over there and back.
I've got a good few weeks yet before I get to that stage so ill wait and see what the best option is closer to then.
Been making some good progress on the wiring loom. Ordered all the brake line fittings and fuel lines so that should all arrive tomorrow opening up a large amount of work to get on with.

Take all the time you need, is the best choice. Pics plz... its dificult to find a Imscher kit???
Probably just the pic
I thought the same as Edd, the original arch lip has a gap up behind the new Sprint kit arch panel, so in time you'll get road grime and dirt flick up in an unwashable location?
Looks lovely overall, shame you're having problems getting the quality finish you want. I think I have a similar darker patch under the paint on my passenger side quarter actually! Not a location for any vinyl/graphics is it by any chance?
Been putting a few hours in on the rebuild over the past week. So here's a bit of an update.
Rear fuel lines progressed.

Brake lines are looking good, as does the tank, glad to see the looms all hidden too.
Cheers, I couldn't of hoped for better with the brake lines, not a cheep option but worth it.
I've been asked a couple questions via pm regarding the brake lines so I though I'd put some info up.
The fittings are all from Car Builders Solutions and the hose I got from Hyphose, although you can get it on eBay cheaper.
Link for fittings.
http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/category/Braking_and_Clutch_System/Brake___Clutch_System_Parts/Unions/Flexible_Brake_Pipe_Unions_Self_assembly,b.html
Firstly cut the hose to length, I used a slitter disk on a grinder which I found to work well.
Cut the outer clear rubber back and open out the braiding.

Had a go at fitting the aero fuel cap, had to spend a bit of time sanding back the recess to get the cap to fit flush before marking up the fixing holes.

Nice brake like write up. Shame you've had to felt the filler cap hole, but it looks much better sat now.
How do these clips attach to the car ?

I fitted rivnuts before the car was painted, then an m6 bolt to mount the clip. The car is covered in them, it's making it so easy to assemble it.
Had football tonight so didnt have long on the car.
I wasn't happy with the fuel pump to filter fuel line, it was to tighter bend so I've routed it slightly different. Also fitted the fuel tank to fuel pump hose.

Been a busy week but have managed to find some time to crack on with the build.
Had a parcel turn up early in the week,

New old stock heater matrix as mine was rather restricted, I stated in the add that it was listed for a 1l, well I couldn't see why there would be any difference to other models but I was wrong :-(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/F9C946CF-82CD-404B-A77A-1428B306B81C-781-000000C268732145_zpsbc66f5d5.jpg
The one I bought is not as deep, any way I wasn't going to let that stop me. So cracked on and fitted the tap connected pipe to get round the clearance issues

Replaced the foam seal
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/023E5E73-D1E3-49C4-BFD9-1DFB909AE8D8-781-000000C280317EEE_zps68a4d8db.jpg
Then had to make some brackets to hold the matrix in place where is is shallower than the old one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/E56A31C2-FA22-407B-A961-44EA1F9A7F9C-781-000000C2864A0580_zps59557240.jpg
Then replaced the rest of the foam seals before fitting it back into the car. With that done I spent a far few hours finishing the wiring. I connected up a battery and have now tested every single electrical circuit on the car and am pleased to say it all works! I wanted this done before the shell came off the roll over jig as its a lot easier working on the wiring with the car on its side. At least now I know everything is going to work first time. Trial fitted the dash to make sure everything still fitting with all the extra wiring etc.

I then moved on to finishing the last of the fuel lines and filler hose.

Will pick up some new bolts tomorrow and get the cage properly bolted down.
I've pm'ed Prey to arrange a flocking my dash and internal gear shifter.
Next stage is to fit the steering rack then engine and box. Just got to sort out a new starter motor and alternator as the current ones are pretty old.
Looks awesome dude. liking the colour of the cage too.
Great work and these are the happy times and the real car building when using the new and renew/repainted instead of the dirty, rusty parts :)
Rear strut brace and battery box would look ace in the same colour as the cage if it's not too late, cracking progress though it looks lovely so far

Yeah, cage colour its a great choice, what´s next?
Looks awesome dude. liking the colour of the cage too.
Cheers Ben, I was a bit unsure when I chose the colour of the cage but now it's in the car I'm glad I went with it over the black I use to have.
Great work and these are the happy times and the real car building when using the new and renew/repainted instead of the dirty, rusty parts :)
Thanks, it certainly makes a change to be working on a car where the only dirt I get on my hands is from the tools I used to strip it down in the first place.

Like the idea with the battery tray, I think I might go with that. As for the strut brace, I'd love it to match the cage but its welded in and I don't fancy risking painting it. I may see if I can get it wrapped in the same colour as the cage.
Yeah, cage colour its a great choice, what´s next?
Cheers, engine in next but ive got a few things to get done first.
Long day at work today so no progress on the car, I did manage to get a new steering rack and alternator ordered today which I'm collecting tomorrow!
Slacking!! Looks good mate

thanks

cheers mate, to be honest I'm having to try and get overtime in rather than work on the car. This rebuild has put a rather large dent in the bank balance and I still need over £400 worth of roose motorsport hoses. Hopefully progress will pick up next week.

On the bumper can you not jus move the bolt down on the backing bar on lh side to pick up the bumper? Just remove it weld the hole and drill lower or if it's fiberglass then drill the hole in the rear pannel higher up to lift it just a thought
Unfortunately not, the bumper is mounted directly to the rear arches and so there is no adjustment.

It's looking perfect!! Can't wait to see it finished mate ;)
Looking great Craig,
Bit of an odd one with the bumper, was it like that before? Did the bodyshop have it fitted?

I assume the bumper was already like it, ill have to look at some old pics. no the Bodyshop never fitted it to the car which is a shame as they would of picked up on it.
the spare bumper ive got isn't in great shape but with a lot of fibre glass work it could be a better option than the one fitted.

looks ace. all the best ones create stress, thats what makes it so good once you have finished it. love it.
I love the second foglight switch, what's that out of and is it just a case of cutting the front off the plastic to expose the plastic casing behind?
Cheers!

Does it mount under the rear lights then? So would need cutting and leveling first. Then repairing up. Shame that really, but alleast you can use the one on it for a time...

i did that too, but using a Cav buttom for my heated screen.

The switch and plug for the back of it are from a mk3 astra, although the cab and calibra are also the same.
The holder for the plug and switch is already there, so like you said you just need to cut the front panel out to expose it.
Job done.
Progress still slow but steady, having been taking pictures either as I've been working in the dark most of the time.
Ill get some pics in the week and do a proper update.
In the mean time here's a cheeky pic of the engine bay which is nearing completion

Looking good!!
Coming along mate! Would boost pipes/ header tank look better in satin black?!
Coming along mate! Would boost pipes/ header tank look better in satin black?!
Header tank is being powder coated the same colour as the rocker cover. It's just had an extra outlet welded on so want to make sure it's got no leaks before having it done.
As for the boost pipe, I'm still undecided. I'm going to polish it and see how it all looks with the header tank done.
For now though it will all stay how it is, as my priority is to have the engine running on Saturday. Fingers crossed!
Also The blue afm to turbo hose will be replaced for a black one, when funds allows!
Some more updates, I decided to spend a bit of time on the exhaust. It's been knocking on the tunnel and rear beam ever since I first fitted it, since then I've fitted the cavalier internal gear shifter which has free'ed up some much needed room.
So armed with this centre section from a calibra I set to work cutting up the two
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/car%20parts%20feb/1d9b57ea64db8d0ee50c3a7acd408a89_zps59a583d9.jpg
My idea was to use the oval shaped silencer from the calibra exhaust to replace the round one on the nova exhaust, as it would sit up into the tunnel. This is the section I chopped out of the nova exhaust.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1255_zpscea8f349.jpg
trialed the oval silencer on the car and it fitted very well. With the exhaust chopped up I could reposition the rear half of the exhaust to fit better over the beam. With all that done it left a small section to be welded in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1257_zpse8250f18.jpg
So salvaged a section of pipe from the calibra exhaust and welded it in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1324_zps8fb543ed.jpg
im just waiting on a couple of proflex mounts so I can weld the hangers on.
the last section to tackle was the tailpipe. It was a tad short and didnt sit central in the bumber cut out. So I've cut it off, grinded the welds back and I have a new one to weld on once I've welded the new hangers on.

More to come shortly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/twag/Nova%202013/DSCN1322_zps0ca91985.jpg
The inside has been progressing well, door bars are now fully bolted in, seats bolted in with freshly powder coated side mounts. I've finally ordered and fitted the last remaining 11 floor bungs which allowed me to fit the spare wheel.

Nice work dude, tbh im surprised you've persevered and built it back up, i know a lot might of been tempted to break and chuck the towel in.

Cheers Scott. I'd of liked to of had it finished by now because it not very nice working out in the cold but there's no chance of me throwing the towel in. If i set out to do something, there's not a lot that will stop me completing it.

Well good on you mate, wish i could find the motivation and determination to get stuck into mine like that, i will have to, because once i start it I'll have to complete it, cant leave it rotting in the garage heartless lol
Excellent work on the exhaust, I found welding in a new silencer tricky to get the angles so impressive work
Did you find a good price on the floor bungs? I wanted some but can't justify the price if I want to replace them all.

Thanks, the exhaust wasn't easy at all. Just had to keep marking it and trimming untill it lined up and then tac it in place. It doesn't help with the car only on axle stands. I just hand to make do because I don't have the money for a new one at the mo.
the floor bungs where £2.40 each :-( Expensive when there's about 20 of them!

If I'm honest I've been struggerling over the last couple of weeks with it being so cold, I just know if I put it on hold now it won't be ready for next years show season. The plan is to have it mot'ed before the end of the year and then get it back to the Bodyshop to have the paintwork sorted.
I noticed last week that the paint on the roof has loads of micro blisters all over it so that's going to need to be sorted on top of both rear quarters that have issues. I just hope the Bodyshop will sort it free of charge :-(
Doh hoped you'd found a dead cheap source for the bungs, oh well lol
Keep up the motivation, nowt you can do about the weather so wrap up warm and crack on!
The bodyshop will sort any probs i'm sure. Glad you found the bungs, i want to replace all of mine too. Exhaust looks good, needs a nice clean up now...lol
