Hi all, i thought that its about time i started a build thread!
its a 1991 nova gsi, i bought the car back in 2006 (i think) it was my first car and i ran it for around a year. Then one day the gearbox decided to die on me so i thought it was a good time to take it off the road and start a 2litre build.
when i first took it off the road the plans were to start the build right away but that didnt happen because i started throwing money at my gt4, but around the start of last year i started buying lots of parts for it i got motivation from looking on here again.
anyway, it currently needs quite a bit of welding work, new arches sills etc and as the title suggests the car will have carbon bumpers, bonnet, boot, doors, wings, grille, skirts and dash. just waiting on the bonnet and boot at the moment. it will be goin into the bodyshop hopefully before summer to get it all sorted. it will also have a high spec c20let in it (500 bhp +)
ill start getting pics up soon of the progress. ill start with pics of how the previous owner had it etc but unfortunitely i dont have any of when i had it on the road, so it will be of how it is at the moment/ last year.

Sounds like it's going to be something special. Hopefully this will go ahead like planned :) Have you got all the carbon panels? Bet that's going to cost a bit lol
bazzap8389
30-01-13, 11:31 AM
Yeah i do hope so. I have everything except the boot and the bonnet just now. I think the bonnet is in the middle of being made :)

I've just been reading the carbon parts thread in the trade section and saw your door lol Very nice! This should look awesome once done. Get some pics up.
No skirts weigh less than carbon ones ;) And you get the same aero effect lol

what will i do, get a pair of carbon mirrors the same as the ones that are on the car in the pics? or get a pair of original mirrors but in carbon?
scorge01
02-02-13, 07:54 PM
Origional but carbon possibly shortened would look good :)
bazzap8389
02-02-13, 08:39 PM
Yeah I'll probably go for them. What will I do about indicators? See if I an get them in the mirrors? I'm not cutting holes in the wings

I cut holes in my fibreglass wings, easiest solution and looks more original. Are you not staying MK2? if so then you don't need side repeaters to be road legal s the front ones wrap around enough.

Do the quarters in carbon and tailgate too, fcuk do the roof and leave it naked carbon!
bazzap8389
02-02-13, 11:58 PM
The tailgate will be done. I havn't decided if the quarters will be done or not, as im not sure how it will look where the carbon bonds to the metal.
How do you mean? If you do the quarters do the full quarter
bazzap8389
03-02-13, 12:01 AM
True story, i'll look into it.
It would be a shame to cover the carbon with paint, looking forward to your updates :)
bazzap8389
03-02-13, 12:06 AM
The carbon wont be covered with paint. The roof, pillars and engine bay will be red maybe the quarters ill see what can be done with them.
What you need is moulds of these,

Are you going to attach the doors with normal hinges and catches? and what about door handles?
I love the idea of a carbon panelled nova, its something I've thought about myself, with the obvious hurdle of paying for it being the main reason holding me back. Keep up with the updates and photos as I'd love to see this being put together.
bazzap8389
03-02-13, 12:15 AM
Thats exactly what i need lol i have the rear panel thats it lol i saw the floor on ocp but was a fortune to get it shipped
When it comes to side repeaters you don't need them for the mot if by standind 1 metre to the side of the rear bumper the front indicators are visable when working . And that is damn near word for word straight from the current VOSA MOT manual not saying this won't change at any point but that is the current rules for mot's

yeah i think so. ive changed my mind a few times on the door handles just dont know what to do. was originally going to go for nova handles then changed my mind for the vectra ones that are already on the car then back to nova ones. decisions decisions

Nice collection you have going. Like said don't worry about the side repeaters mine have been smoothed out and still passed fine :)
no problem i've just finished doing the theory side of the mot course so it's all fresh in my head. and it always makes a build easier if you have the proper legislation to build to

Here's some more recent pics. ill get more up to date ones next weekend. currently most of the interior is out except the dash. i also removed the sound proofing from the floor, heated it up with a blowtorch and it pealed right off.
The engine, bumper and wings etc will hopefully be removed next weekend (with the help from scorge01) . ill keep it
updated.

If you managed to sort carbon full rear quarters I think it would be epic
One of a kind and unique, and that's very hard thing to achieve with a Nova nowadays

^ yeah thats basically the plan mate, well for the outside. the inside will be stripped with a carbon dash, carbon seats and a roll cage

Are you wrapping body panels in carbon? Or are you going the whole hog and create moulds to make full carbon parts? Just wondering, as I quite fancy full carbon stuff myself (when I can afford it, that is). Either way, excellent work and nice to see Steve's old GSi being saved from the great scrapyard in the sky. :thumb:
love the front end on this :)

I've been looking forward to seeing a thread on this seeings I've seen loads of the parts Chris has made, should be one of a kind road legal Nova once finished ;)
The shell looks a bit sorry for its self though so hope things go smoothly for you :thumb:
Some nice parts you have their, It will be interesting to see how they fit together. I think a nice 100% carbon tax disc holder would go well in their too lol link below........

All you need is the floor pan and roof and you've got rid of 90% of rust issues then lol

I know lol I wasn't wanting a roof as I want to keep the sunroof but mayb I'll change my mind.

If your spraying the whole car red though it seems a shame to cover the carbon goodness :(
bazzap8389

No no I'm not painting the carbon. Only the metal that's left will be painted red. I would have bought fibreglass parts if I was going to paint it lol

normally the inner tub is spot welded on to the 'outer' quarter. How will you bond the 2 sections together when you fit the carbon quarters to give it strength?
bazzap8389
11-02-13, 09:14 PM
^ I honestly have no idea yet mate I'm sure I'll get something sorted though
Glue. There are proper strong bonders out there now.

Yeah that thing is tidy. Well if this does go ahead with the quarters the only bits red will be the roof and the a pillar. So will I have to declare to the dvla of a colour change?
Love the carbon bumper, looks really well made.
bazzap8389

Ben of corsa sports doesn't look like that now though ;-)
Plus this is going to be the only carbon road going nova in Europe lol
Epoxy glue will bond those rear quarters on ;-)
I'd need to look at my shell but I'm pretty sure the roof skin doesn't hold the sunroof cassette, if your have gone this far getting the other panels it would be a travesty not to do the roof,
Luv the arm bending...Rear quarters would look sweet, yeah glue 'em on :d
Shame not to do the roof skin also lol
Keep up the good work fella!!
This is gona be some car when it's done buddy, love the carbon goodness.
Keep up the great work mate.

Not an update but thought i'd put up some pics of the engine, exhaust manifold, turbo and inlet manifold. i bought the engine around 2 years ago from a 54k mile calibra turbo that had been rear ended. The turbo is a precision turbo 6262 got this, the exhaust manifold and wastegate off david dixon on here. heres some pics, not the best quality as taken with my iphone again.

Not sure there is really a massive need for a carbon roof, is there? How much weight saving is there to be made from it? and what about losing strength from having a roof bonded on? Are people suggesting it just because it would look cool and because so much of the rest of the car will be carbon. Could just paint the standard roof black or wrap it, if its really a visual reason over any other benfits.
maddogdaz666
17-02-13, 09:42 PM
There's no strength in the roof skin, Plus carbon is stronger than 2mm steel.
paul james

Yeah I'd guessed carbon could be stronger, but I mean more about how its attached to the body, is welded on metal stronger than glued on carbon? I would have thought the roof does add a fair bit of rigidity to the shell. Seems like a lot of effort for minimal gains to me, I'm just questioning what the motivation is, other than just being able to say it has a carbon roof.
bazzap8389
17-02-13, 11:11 PM
I know what your saying mate, the structural strength is something I've been thinking about. Nothing is set in stone yet, it's something I will have to think about.
Strength in a nova shell? Are you having a fcuking laugh!! They have no no strength in the panels, only in the way they are added together.
Plus carbon is stronger than 2mm steel.
2mm thick carbon is not stronger then 2mm thick steel.
i don't know much about the strengths etc, but i would be having a full weld/bolt in cage if your doing the quarters/roof
Why all the holes around the side?

I already have a bolt in cage for it but I think I'll be getting a full weld in one instead.
Why all the holes around the side?

No it isn't. I HATE them sh*t stickers. Rust is full of water so is heavy.

get it powdered bud, doesn't cost a lot and is a lot harder wearing.
Strip right down, blasted and powdercoated

Shotblasted then epoxy resin paint is best. It won't chip and lift to allow corrosion underneath like powdercoat.

Powder coat looks lovely when it is done and it is hard wearing although it does chip easily. Unfortunatly when it chips it allows corrosion and water under the finish causing the corrosion to spread and lift it off. The epoxy resin is supposed to stop that happening as it bonds to the metal better.
Try www.rust.co.uk as they sell it. There is a full description of how it works on their site. I have used their products before and they are excellent. An alternative is POR whch can be bought from Frost Auto Restoration but it is expensive.

I got a call from cobra today saying there was a few seats that have been sent out with the wrong holographic sticker or something and they think one of them is mine, so I've got to take pics and if its wrong send it back. so ill take the opportunity to see if theyl send me another seat with the same carbon pattern.

So I got a call back from cobra today, it is one of my seats that have to be sent back for the sticker to be changed which is no big deal as there still in the packaging. Also spoke about swapping the seat so both will have the same weave pattern which they can't do as the seats are made to order and there isn't actually a defect. No Big deal really.
At least they are going to fit the proper sticker on the seat for you mate:))

You'll get there, once it's in the body shop (hope your saving your pennies) you'll be itching to get it back and get on with it.

It's just black stencil paint I've got at work. Proper good finish with it, if it's chips etc I'll get it done properly somewhere.
Thanks Jeffrey :)

Looking for some opinions, I've cleaned the gearbox down just getting ready to paint it. The engine bay will be Going candy red, what do you lot suggest? I'm swaying towards black I think.

I do like these :)
Got to say, I love that car but been considering selling it to fund the nova, seems a bit silly selling a car like that to fund a "nova" though. I reckon I'd regret it as soon as it went.

Looks like I'll have to cut the passenger side inner arch out for the turbo, was going to go for the smooth look there not going to happen now lol
A few pics I've got from David dixons build, mine should look like this as its the very same kit.

^Cheers. Yeah I get like that now and then need some insperarion to get cracking on. Hopefully I'll be driving it next year :) yeah I think the gt4 is a keeper I'd rather sell my Audi lol
fecking hell dude....that's nuts!!!!!! but is it not taking out the strength by removing that much panel?

Dan, when it's all fitted etc I'll be welding a plate back in to keep the strength.
david dixon
19-06-13, 09:29 PM
I wouldn't worry anyway mate, the strength is only in the chassis rail!
bazzap8389
19-06-13, 09:42 PM
^ very true I doubt there is much strength in the 2mm or whatever it is steel lol
david dixon
19-06-13, 09:54 PM
Most people overseas cut it away when running side mounts etc so no strength at all mate ;-)
bazzap8389
19-06-13, 10:05 PM
Thats good! I'll get something in place so I don't have stones etc bouncing off the turbo though lol

You really need to spend time with a big screwdriver going all over that chassis, I did with my mk2 last year and this is what happened....

I'll be having a word with the bloke from the bodyshop in a week or so when I'm back in days. I'll have to get his opinion on it. Cars just crumbling to pieces
Why not get it dipped or blasted mate? Your already going the whole hog with the rest so it'll be peace of mind knowing its properly de-rusted.
bazzap8389
23-06-13, 09:49 AM
It will be getting blasted but the problem is there might not be any metal left after it lol and as much as it pains me to say it, it really is a rot box at the moment :(
