That setup is good, but not great imo; purely because setting the castor in situ should be infinitely adjustable (like say a track rod is).
When the car's on a ramp being tracked up & castor set etc, I wouldn't want to be limited to 180° turns on a bearing that'll only get you 'close enough' N/S to O/S equal castor, having to jack the car up each time unbolting everything to rotate the next best guess each side at a time; it's just not practical at your local alignment place.
Don't get me wrong the quality of the fabrication looks perfect; just the design's not quite there imo.
If you wanted to use in situ adjusters, everything has to be even larger thus meaning you struggle with clearance with the wheel. Its something I've looked into several times now and although I would prefer to have it in situ adjustable the added cost alone would put most people off.

It will more than suit my needs that's for sure I'm chuffed with the kit :)
I think I'll have to get the title changed to clarify a few things lol it's front engined 4x4 not rwd or rear engined etc lol
As long as it's got carbon in it's accurate lol
See what BRoad is saying regarding on-car adjustment, would just take a bit longer to set up

I have no idea who else could take it on. His work is bloody good though. I was told last week him and another guy will be working on it to try hammer on with it.
You're a bit far from us! Quite sure you're guy will sort it :)

Been in past the shop this week still nothing been done..he needs material for doing the tunnel and space frame which wasn't mentioned before. So I've ordered 8m of 45mm x 1.5mm thick seamless t45 for the spaceframe. Not sure if that's enough or too much etc but I'll order more if needed. Also ordered 2m x 1m of mild steel sheet for the tunnel as I'm not using the cavy stuff. Hopefully this stuff turns up quickly.
Sounds like normal bodyshop/garage/builder stalling. They all do it.

Someone more knowledgable might be able to comment here but the 45x1.5 seems a little thin to me. I used 45x2.5 which is what custom cages had used on the the nova cage.
EDIT: Just seen that you are using T45, mine was CDS. Ignore me! lol
bazzap8389
21-02-15, 05:52 PM
Haha I was going to say I was on the phone to custom cages and they use 3 different thicknesses for various parts of the nova cage.
bazzap8389
24-02-15, 08:06 PM
I've got a sheet of mild steel, it's just under 1mm thick. Is this too thin?
My t45 also turned up today.

Will be .8 gague steel I'm sure 1.5 would be better for the tunnel and seat mounts could be wrong though

T45 dropped off at the shop.
Just ts going with the cavy tunnel set up instead it's exactly what's needed it's all been cut to size etc and will save hassle and hopefully look pretty factory.

Got some parts yesterday. 2x sets of fibreglass rear quarters. An exact mould of original gm ones and got my mirrors. The rest of the parts will be delivered soon just finishing touches to go. Unbelievable how light the quarters are though.
no idea if the spaceframe has been started or not yet, I've not been to the shop since I dropped off the material almost a month ago.

Quarters look very good cheers :)
Mirrors are cool. So youll have standard width but FG?
Aye, standard width. I want the car to look 'standard' except for the carbon. Was a few complications with the carbon quarters so best solution was fg ones. I think it will be better with these anyway as they won't look stuck on. Also got a carbon blank for the sunroof as I no longer want to cut the roof off. Every other panel on the outside is carbon though :)
Ah i see, doea sound like its for the best.
bazzap8389
21-03-15, 03:57 PM
Yes definitely.
Progress sd might slow down even more over the next few months as I've just bought a house but I'll see how things go. If nothing happens over the next few months at the shop I'll get a welder from work to help me out and I'll do the space frame myself at home. I've for the materials etc just not the time at the moment.

The tunnel is done, made one from scratch as the cavy one would have required more effort than it was worth to fit. So really that cavy was cut up for nothing :(
Think he was going to make a start on the front part of the cage then start working out dimensions for the back end.
it will 100 % get done I've no doubts, spent too much money on it to just give up that's for sure.

Looks really good and you must be happy to see some progress.
Tunnel is nice.
Being that all the rear floor is cut out, should some bracing not have gone in?
The crossbrace in the front is retained I see, I'd imagine this will end up like my blue one where most of the strength will be through the cage and additional bars to retain structural rigidity?

Looking really good. Is the transmission tunnel running over the seat crossmember to retain standard seat fittings? Do they still fit with the width of the tunnel? + how will you fit the 1/4 panels? Screws, rivets, nuts n bolts, bonding?
love the carbon parts collection. Would love some of the mirrors.

Cheers, there was a few bits welded under the car to keep it all in place when it was cut.

Yeah the cage will be all the support really should do the job keeping it all rigid.

Thanks, standard rails won't be used I've got bits that I got with my cage to be welded in and the seats will be mounted on that. As for the quarters I went for fibreglass ones instead as I didn't want it to look like they'd just been stuck on so will just be bonded on somehow and smoothed in so will look original really.
Nowt can move anyway.Class 6 novas at grassing are built the same.As long as you work off a centreline its all good.

Might be silly, but. Will you not be running seats mounted on rails, rather than std mounts? Just odd they've left the strengthening bit in the floor for them... And wont the turrets be all different as you'll have rear uprights as its 4x4?
Ive got bits to be welded in for the seats, he dsnt know what I was doing with seats that's why it's still there. I'm using front suspension on the rear, I don't want to give too much away yet but I'll have pics soon enough!

Thanks mate means a lot! There are lots more epic builds out there though check out THe Simps one! Will just look like a normal nova from the outside except for the carbon. Inside and underneath is a different story though lol

Aye slow and steady :) as said the exterior should look pretty much standard but carbon instead of metal so should be all good.

I was in past iday as well, aye he's cracking on he's got a fabricator on with him now as well so that's certainly helping :)

22-05-15, 09:56 PM
What alloys are you going to be running on this Baz and what's the rear beam coming from? Will you have issues with standard rear size arches?
bazzap8389
22-05-15, 09:58 PM
I've a set of gm eurosports I think I'll be using not 100% on it yet though. No rear beam being used ;) nah should be all good because I have the width on the tubs to run wider stuff if need be :)
Southie
22-05-15, 10:02 PM
If no rear beam is used then what width are you aiming for? Is it a custom style beam with a rear disc break setup your fitting??
Also if a different rear setup will you need to find a different handbrake set to wire in or are you aiming for a standard Nova one?
bazzap8389
22-05-15, 10:07 PM
Not sure in the width yet tbh I'll discuss that with the fabricators and see what's what's. Instead of a rear beam it's getting rose jointed wishbones that will connect to the diff cradle 3 of them at each side. Prob a set of wilwood 4 pots on the rear.
Southie
22-05-15, 10:09 PM
Nice, it should be cracking then. Obviously your fitting a bias brake setup then to get it all running in harmony mate as you don't want too heavy braking at the backend ;)
bazzap8389
22-05-15, 10:11 PM
Yeah sure am mate, I'll get brakes sorted out nearer the time but what ever I put on the front I'll put on the rear to keep it simple. Most likely wilwood ones though :)
Southie
22-05-15, 10:15 PM
Yeah plenty of time for all that but it's best to think ahead as it will be quite critical lol

You got carbon rear quarters for it?
bazzap8389
23-05-15, 10:44 PM
That's a thought no I don't. Everything except roof and quarters. Quarters are fibreglass. I may paint the outside a different colour but keep it red inside.
Imo, rear quarters would have to be black, to match the carbon doors and wings

You sort choice of topmounts in the end then?
Rear cradle looks good, with using the nova hubs on the back, will you ad in extra support ?( as in like steering movement as you'll only have one side held in place with the std steering arm mount..)

I think the plan is just to mount it off steering arm and wrap the lower arms in steel to add strength there aswell but seen this today when was in speaking to the fabricator and looks well weight has been kept ryt down with light materials used and I'd imagine would be one the best 4x4 Novas about some really good work went into this

Cheers :) it's getting there. Finishing off the suspension bits etc easier to do it with the cage out the car. Once that's done and cage welded into the car properly the floor will be next to go in :)
Are you using front hubs on the back?
Yeah I sure am. Front hubs and front suspension.
Looking good Barry, all you really need are a few fibreglass/carbon panels to make it look like a Nova lol!
Might be worth speaking to chip (if you know him)
he used to run nova front legs on the back of his mid engined nova but suffered with horrendous bump steer issues, he swapped to mk4 astra hubs and that reduced it a great deal as the steering arm was a lot closer plane to the lower wishbone

Nah I don't know him, it's just the hubs and strut I'm using off the front all the arms etc all be fabricated with rose joints to suit and hopefully will do the job nicely. Time will tell I suppose. Cheers.
How are you connecting the steering arms to the car, if they are at a different arc to the lower arm then you will introduce unwanted bump steer,
ive tried to find the link to his project but for some reason obsessive performance disorder forum seems to be down!

To be fair the macpherson strut does make the track arm harder to design than a twin wishbone set up so don't be surprised if it's not perfect first time

bazzap8389

There's a fair bit to be cut off them yet. Prob 2" on the width and a good bit off the height. You can see the line in one of the pics where they'll be cut. I know it's about time, I'm away on holiday at the end of the week and hopefully when I'm back it's a good bit on and almost ready to take home.

15-09-15, 09:33 PM
Cool update Baz! My 1st thought was that why hadn't you mounted them higher while you had the opportunity as they look to be in roughly stock position?. But then I saw you already had to tweak a bit because of one of the tubes.
What kinda ride height will this beast be at?
bazzap8389
15-09-15, 10:18 PM
I haven't actually measured it out but the turrets are much higher than standard height.
No idea about the ride height yet it's really hard to gauge as the quarters have been hacked since the build started really I'll get a better idea when the new ones go on.

16-09-15, 12:42 AM
Ive just looked up the position I had on my old tubs and how they related to the wheel position and it was as follows...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/30-12-08010.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Nova%20Coupe%20Project/30-12-08019.jpg
So they were put in the stock position but just allow more inner well and shock clearance really. The masking tape line in pic 2 gives an indication of where a hatch arch would sit with the wheel about an inch from the top of the tub (from memory).

Looking at this previous pic your bottom arms are nice and level here and looks like the wheel would tuck into the arch if you imagine it was still there running from the bumper line. Much lower and your arms could start reaching some interesting angles?
bazzap8389
16-09-15, 07:43 AM
Aye I think it should sit just in the arch,if it does without having to adjust the arms too much I'll be happy. He's done lots of careful measuring working out the heights of everything so hopefully comes together fine.

Ah I see, I prob wouldn't have bothered if I didn't need to tbh. Looks much better being symmetrical though. The asymmetry of the standard tubs bug my happiness lol.
I'll be more than happy if my wheels just sit in the arches. I'll have lots of adjustment on the coilovers though should be all good.
Turrets look cool, will take the weight/stress much better and give more clearance. Plus i could rise them a bit, so my battery box would sit under my brace.

Loving that! Tubs, turrets and floor look ace.

Thanks Benn, it's coming on slowly but surly. I might swing in past today if I can be arsed.
yeah, didn't want to go wide arch. Wanted it to stay like a standard nova really.
That's the bit i really like, that it still looks kinda standard.

Wheels look good, compomotive style are they 18's? They'd look better silver or anthracite though ;)
I'm guessing 15" cause iirc they where tubs for 15" wheels put in.
top fab work again baz bet your itching to get this up and running now
bazzap8389
17-03-16, 08:21 PM
Yeah 15" oz gm euro sports. Staying black with the red stickers on them I think. Aye tubs are for 16" wheels on an escort but there's heaps of room with the speedlines on.
cheers plug, yeah can't wait. Taken much longer than I'd originally hoped but plans have always been changing.

17-03-16, 08:32 PM
Will 15's look right it the rear arches though as your going to have to have the rear fairly high for ground clearance though with all that fab work?
bazzap8389
17-03-16, 10:43 PM
I think it'll be all good should sit just as standard, the cradle doesn't come any lower than the floor of the car so shouldn't be an issue...I hope haha
Funk me that back end is awesome!

^ haha
went in past today to drop the fuel tank off. Needed to make sure it'll fit in the back. Which it does because it's tiny lol need to make up a little platform for it. Also dropped off the rear lights so the back end can be properly welded up now. Here's a few shots from underneath also.

I forget now, what is the car going to be used for? It looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it.
bazzap8389
12-04-16, 11:37 AM
Cheers Craig. Just a bit of fun really. Track days some drag racing and occasional road use when in the mood for a thrash.
Oh they've not started cutting the front up yet then?
bazzap8389
12-04-16, 12:51 PM
Still the front part of the tunnel to be cut. That won't be done until we stick in a block, gearbox and transfer box. Most of the fab work is done though just bits and bobs to do then get it ready for paint. Can't wait to start building it. It's taken much longer than I first anticipated.
Do you know what will be done on the rack side of things? As the tunnel looks like it will go right where the rack is...
bazzap8389
12-04-16, 01:14 PM
There's more room there than it looks. I'll get better pics next time I'm over

Good plan. I was referring to the tank size, 22lt will be ample for either of those uses.

I want!!
I'm sure you've discussed this before but what are you doing with the rear quarters? Are they going to be carbon?
Managed to get all your carbon bits off CMC then?
Or you get someone else to do them?
bazzap8389
21-04-16, 07:33 PM
Had to get the quarters in fibreglass so will just be bonded on and painted.
aye Edd I got it from Chris and was refunded for the boot. Unsure where to find a boot from now.
To start with all I wanted was a carbon bonnet so very happy to have it now!
