Had to get the quarters in fibreglass so will just be bonded on and painted.

aye Edd I got it from Chris and was refunded for the boot. Unsure where to find a boot from now.

To start with all I wanted was a carbon bonnet so very happy to have it now!

I hope the bonnet fits after all this....

Bonnet is pretty.

Cheers guys I'm rather happy.

Cant see me breaking plug but can put your name down. Bonnets can be bought from another place online though. I asked about a boot today but it would be gel coated and have to be painted which is just pointless so the search continues.

i know Colin I'm hoping everything goes together nicely

Unfortunately on hold for a wee while. Guy at the shop is flat out. I could have had it done this week and home but had to say no as I've no space in my garage at the moment and didn't want to put it in my lockup.

Floor is all welded up now. Got some strengthening to go in the rear quarters on the inside, some fillers on the floor at the front where the tube comes through and bits at the bulk head to do. Hopefully get them done next weekend.

Aye all the welds will be getting ndt'd :thumb:

unfortunately not Paul, something else I was messed about with...I've got 2 sets of fibreglass ones instead though. Still need a carbon boot too. Won't be settling for a fibreglass one that's for sure.

BRoadGhost
07-05-17, 10:42 AM
It's true Ben panels are a mare to weld, but this is tube & alike; much more fun!

IMO FRP tailgate's not too bad at all; get the early one, smooth it all up & pin it down - DONE!

bazzap8389
07-05-17, 10:51 AM
I know mate I just want everything to match though, I'd be happy with a fibreglass one if the rest of the car was fibreglass. Even a carbon skinned one would do the job, But if I can't get one then I'll have to settle on one.

Main thing at the moment is to get the shell finished so I can get it home though. Get it built up, make sure everything goes together and take it from there.

Anyone any ideas about a handbrake? I'll need to use front brakes on the rear so how do I set up a handbrake to that?

totalnova
07-05-17, 11:02 AM
I'm sure you can get little calipers that are made just for the handbrake, that sit separately to the main caliper.
Nick

Brilliant. I'll look into it :thumb:

Benn
07-05-17, 02:10 PM
You can. Most "super cars" have them. As 4pots won't do the handbrake so they use a small caliper just for the HB
Like so...

Check this thread out, they build the brakets and everything for a TT with 4pot rear set up.

I would disagree with that to a point. Yes it can bog down a thread and make it harder to find what you want, but its the replies and comments that can really help give you momentum on a project.

I think its more about having the option. I like the pics but CBA to read the posts... unless it was for a mod or something to do and then maybe be able to read the posts after a given pic etc. Kinda like a thread filter

So, it's been a while since I've updated this. I've still not got round to redoing the pics yet either. I'll get that done when I've a day or so to myself.

Was over today, inner quarters made up which go down to meet the sill, an area I was thinking there'd be issues but will be all good. So, sills on inner quarters on then it's coming home. Bodywork wise it'll need a. It at each side of the bulkhead made up that was cut for the cage. Front of the transmission tunnel cut out. Not doing that until the engine goes in and can see what needs removed and 2 bits welded in where the diff part of the cage comes into the car. Except for the rear quarters going on that'll be the body done.

Since there's fuck all pics in here at the mo, here's a pic of my bonnet haha

Cheers folks, I said above the metal work will be done but I've actually still got to get engine mounts and gearbox mounts sorted out and cut the front of the tunnel to suit.

I'll prep the car for paint when I've got it home. Hopefully January. Still stuck on colours though. Outside is defs going black but can't make my mind up on the inside. Was thinking grey, (Audi rs3 grey) then sometimes think black with a grey cage or something a bit more lairy like purple flake or something. If I go for the grey I'll do all the frame and suspension arms etc too.

What you's think? Need some inspiration!

Metal fabrication is such an uphill battle; at least progress is happening during the most challenging time of year, although atm it could be October outside :D

If you are set on black for the outside; set it apart with vinyl:-

Yeah that's the plan, made a start going over the metal with the da today, the bare metal looks a bit shit as it's been sitting about so I'll get it all cleaned and primed so I don't have to go over it again. Trying in my seats tomorrow, it's going to be touch and go whether they go in or not... might have to take a bit out the tunnel.

Nice seats, can't wait to see the carbon mock up

BRoadGhost
06-03-18, 09:22 PM
Ok so even rear quarters are going to be in carbon? Impressive; slight shame it's a sunroof model or is this going also in favour of composite?!

Seats look of a good design and not dissimilar to what I have in mine, perfect without ears etc on a road car as even in such buckets, strapped in, it can be a struggle sometimes at junctions to crane neck around!

Are you thinking rotary wire brush to clear the surface crap? I cannot recommend vactan enough as the initial treatment onto bare metal, followed by red oxide then primer etc - Coat it & coat it & coat it else you'll forever be chasing it in 10 years time.

bazzap8389
06-03-18, 09:36 PM
The quarters are fibreglass, I just hope they'll look ok. I've got a set of metal ones incase they don't though.

Yeah I much prefer this style of seat.

its pretty much a scotch bright pad I've been using, takes it away instantly, it's really light marks on all the bare metal just from sitting around really. All the rot has been cut out so nothing proper rusty is left. Is that vactan the converter stuff? So red oxide all the bare metal on the car and hit it with primer afterwards?

Shamish82
06-03-18, 10:39 PM
Great to see the cars home. I would use etch primer over red oxide on bare metal but everyone is different. This is going to look awesome [emoji106]

A chemical treatment will never truly reverse one structure into another, however in my experience of sheet metalwork; vactan has the ability to react with bare metal better than any other initial treatment for the long term inhibition of corrosion. More so than even red oxide; which is why I suggest these chemicals in that order so that you do it once and never look back.

Fiberglass can be fine, but you're never really going to know until it's too late. Always gonna come down to how much prep time you invest in the fit & flattening prior to paint.

In a way though it is always a shame when the months roll by in a winter lockup and pristine metal reacts with the ambient moisture. No wonder builds in the states etc never have the same ballache.

Nice seats, can't wait to see the carbon mock up Ta, hopefully get the front end tried on in the coming weeks. Away on holiday as of next week.

Great to see the cars home. I would use etch primer over red oxide on bare metal but everyone is different. This is going to look awesome [emoji106] Aye delighted to have it back. I've no idea the order really haha

Looking good dude! Thanks mate

Thanks for the info! I'll see how it goes with the fibreglass ones, I've got 2 sets incase something goes wrong haha got a set of steel ones too just incase. Yeah it's a pity but easily sorted out I guess.

Nice to see you’ve got this home at long last, you’ll have loads of fun I suspect getting all the expensive bits on now. What timescale have you set yourself on finishing it lol

Aye finally eh haha yeah should be fun, as long as the parts fit...lol.

Not really got a timescale tbh, I'd like to say asap but getting married next year so I've got that to save for. Can't see the nova being allowed to be at the front of the queue haha

Surprised none of it's turned black after curing; tbh not the best time of year to start finishing but Vactan is the best direct to metal - gonna do a red oxide next before primer?

good question Benn, I have a few answers for that. Number 1, still need to strip pulleys and the power steering pump off to get it to fit. Number 2, it’s sitting on the engine stand so I can work on it and number 3 the car is sitting on trestles 700mm off the ground so the crane will hit the garage roof before the engine is over the height of the car :thumb:

Not been on here in a while. Few updates, engine’s been in and out a few times getting it in the conrrect position and getting the cut out at the front of the tunnel right. There’s a pipe on the transfer box that’s fouling at one of the steering rack threads. I’ve either to cut the thread and leave 3 for the steering rack and knock a bit up for extra support or chop a bit on the box, not decided which yet. Then can get the tunnel strengthened at the front to take another gearbox/ transfer box mount.

After that jsut need to fab to bits in the bulkhead and alternator cut out and the front end should pretty much be finished.

Just realised I’ve got nowhere to host my pics at the moment.. deleted the apps. Pics to follow.

Currently engine is in on 2 mounts. Need to knock up the rear one. Tunnel is done just needs tidied up. Had to chop the pipe off the top of the transfer box to clear the steering rack. Not much fab work at all needing done. Made new rear suspension arms at work also. Need to fit them to get her rolling again. Had a hectic year though, hopefully able to batter on from this weekend!

Funny enough, worked on it last night for the first time since July I think. My mates had my engine crane, so I’ve not been able to get near it.

took the engine back out. I’ve a bit more to grind of the transfer box to get it to fit in the tunnel. Once I’ve got that to fit I just need to strengthen up the front of the tunnel, make a rear gearbox mount and a few other little bits and the front end will be done.

finding time has been difficult but looks like I have much more of that in a weeks time when I’m back on day shift.
