Here we go then,
some of you will know Ive moved to a new house, so i can get my nova back from 'tom eccles' the messer thats had it in dry storage for the last 2 years, but enough of that cant be arsed with negativity anymore doesn't get anyone anywhere,
so Ive getting my self ready for the arrival of my nova, firsts things first got to get this corsa fixed and gone to make space for it

http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0301.jpg
got as far as i can with that right now until my new torx bits arrive, could have sworn i had some must have left them down south.
this is my temporary work bench
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0302.jpg
(size isn't everything lads ;) )
As i cant do anymore to the corsa, thought i might aswell use the time to assemble my engine crane (finally)

yum yum nitrous
p.s if anyone wants that sub and amp let me know, you can have it for 20 quid, has no place in a striped out track day car
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0309.jpg
the bucket seats ;) guests can sleep on the floor!!!!
---the nova will hopefully be running a spec similar to this---
-256mm front brakes (fast road pads, new disc's & 5.1 dot fluid)
-spax rsx coilovers & Polly bushed
-front & rear strut braces
-c20xe (referbed and running nitrous oxide)
-stripped out interior
-bucket seats, 4 point harnesses, sued s/wheel, flocked dash
-perspex windows (front sliders)
-roll cage (have to research whats the best here, bolted/welded and how many points?)
-fiberglass bonnet, wings & tailgate (unpainted, pins, straps, raisers etc.)
-keeping it on small bumpers (drilled to feck as it looks proper)
-15" alloys (Astra sxi i think?), unknown semi-slicks (proxes on the road)
im toying with the idea of referbing the alloys and leaving them in primer Grey, and just giving them a few coats of Matt lacquer, then flocking the track day wheels orange, green or some other stupidly lairy colour lol
a proper little track shlagggggggg, hopefully some of you guys will pop along and lend a hand ;)
this is the last picture i took of it in road worthy condition
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/37408_408328247117_660692117_4354985_8048519_n.jpg
thats it for now guys & girls.
to jump straight to the nova go to page 5
a proper little track shlagggggggg,
Only if/once it's been on track. Nice size garage, engine stand is scratched tho...

got to have your priorities set in life mate.
You can build an engine on a coffee table, but you can't eat off an engine stand :p
If you're clever though you can use the engine stand to make a coffee table :d

Well after trying to help clean the house, and making one tiny mistake i was banished to my garage (again )
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0320.jpg
them thing really dont handle very well, even with the low center of gravity, dont know how women keep them under control
so i start contemplating the meaning of life, whats it all about, why are we here? but then that hurt my brain so i cleaned the garage :d
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0329.jpg

just a few welding gloves (if only i knew how to weld )
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0324.jpg
this really is a well sized garage got loads of room to move around even with a car in there
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0331.jpg
perspex windows (thanks to merian for selling them but a even bigger thank you to iain for picking them up and dropping them off to me top guy :thumb:)
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0322.jpg
really need to raise up this table, so im not always hunched over it
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0326.jpg
i remember some one saying you can use a corsa air box in the engine bay of a xe nova, so im keeping this, as cone filters are for gays, there hot air sucking mofos (and if im wrong and cant get it to fit, cone filters are great i love them sooooooooooooooo much ;))
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0327.jpg
The Corsa airbox won't fit without modifying it and cutting a **** loads out of the bottom. I started on it last week, it just needs tidying up:
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1711.jpg
I then set about cutting it about:
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1721.jpg
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1731.jpg
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1732.jpg
And sat in about the right place in the engine bay:
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1726.jpg
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/liampoulton/Liams%20Nova%20Build/IMG_1722.jpg
I then went down to Maplin and bought a £7 soldering iron and set about plastic welding the gaping hole I made (first time plastic welding and I think it turned out pretty well):

i dont really know what i want to do tbh mate, i have a million diffrent ideas for a million diffrent things but only one car to do it all to, if that make sence
im half tempted to leave the rear beam for now and maybe change it over to disc brakes in the end with a bias controller and i still really like the idea of getting some 4 pot brembos from a fiat coupe, just to be a bit diffrent
but if i do take all that work on chances are the car will never see the road :(

righty, lefty, righty
Ive bought this stuff to help clean up rust suspension parts (think it was £13)
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0659.jpg
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0665.jpg
mixed up aload and have some parts in there will pull them out tomorrow and show you guys how good the stuff is :d
QUESTION TIME...
what pump is this from?
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0662.jpg
came with this regulator, which looks well past it tbh and needs changing so if anyone can point me in the right direction to getting a new one it would be really appreciated
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0661.jpg
pump number if it helps
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0664.jpg
also where the hell does this go?? the pump and regulator were attached to it
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0660.jpg
you can see in the above photo how rust it is thats been put in the soloution aswell so will see how that comes out tomorow
hopefully will have the suspension stuff all painted tomorow, then just need to get some bushes and thats one job done :thumb:

11-09-12, 01:53 PM
so could i use this pump and my 1200 tank, the 1200 tank has flow and return ports and is in much better condition then my gsi tank, i know ive already got metal pipes on the car and getting some braided hoses from them to the engine
so could i use this pump and my 1200 tank, the 1200 tank has flow and return ports and is in much better condition then my gsi tank, i know ive already got metal pipes on the car and getting some braided hoses from them to the engine
the 1200 tank may have a feed & return, but it has no swirl pot. so every time you turn right with some vigour & only 1/2 tank of fuel in, it will suck air. this will definitely cause the car to cough & splutter & will eventually knack the pump.
buy a late model spi tank & fit an astra mk3 or corsa internal pump - with the intake shortened properly to fit.

11-09-12, 09:17 PM

still not found anyone to do the welding on my engine bay so another small update :(
i pulled the parts out of the de-rust/grim soloution and its worked well :thumb:
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0676.jpg
(all the grey arears had light surface rust)
the fuel pump carrier was still rusty, the lighter rust had all flaked off but the more substantial stuff was still there
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0674.jpg
so i attacked it with a wire brush and a wire wheel on the 4" grinder
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0675.jpg
and back in the (now stronger) soloution it goes
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0677.jpg
hopefully it will be better when it comes out tomorow

right i better practice my welding other wise this project isn't going to go any where fast, i was having problems with my welder as the wire speed seems to have a mind of its own :wtf: end up with some right ****ty welds and not to mention the wire falling off the motors wheels every ten fooking seconds
so i opened up the welder
http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s720x720/539482_10151162046852118_1742321810_n.jpg
and with a little bit of modding i came up with this genius solution
http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/424598_10151162046977118_2131551071_n.jpg
its helping weigh down the top arm attached to the roller, which pushes the top roller down on to the wire holding it in place, this means my wire speed is more consistent happy days :d
^^all this means my welds look alot smarter^^

think i need a new wire brush :/
http://i475.photobucket.com/albums/rr119/turbojolt/2%20fast%202%20fat/SAM_0696.jpg
no nasty repairs/bodges were uncovered so im a happy bunny, the tiny bits of surface rust were wire wheeled off and covered in rust treatment, left it in etch primer for now, will give it a blast with some satin black paint later, then its being seam sealed and having that rubbery underseal stuff on it and a coat of white paint on top of that hopefully that will be enough to keep out any future rust

16-09-12, 03:30 PM
Defo got your monies worth from the hand wire brush.
The tension on that wheel is adjustable, and it appears to be wound all the way off in the top pic?
Too much tension is just as bad as if the wire ever gets stuck in the tip etc it will force it down and try and fold it up in the line/torch/welder, which might get messy!
Thinner metal to thick is fairly easy too, it's all about concentrating the heat on the thicker stuff, and letting less into the thinner. Look up some stuff on torch angles and the concentration of heat, that will help a lot.
turbojolt
16-09-12, 03:52 PM
its unwound on the first picture as i had to reseat the wire in to the grove on the bottom wheel, as it fell out again and it kept doing it, so i flipped the mig reel over so its feeding from the bottom (you can see it in the hammer picture) and that seemed to help for a little bit but its still not perfect
there should be 2 grooves in that little wheel, make sure it's on the right size on for the wire you have.
turbojolt
16-09-12, 04:07 PM
Im such a :tard: just had a look and your right there is 2 groves, it was on the larger setting so ive flipped the wheel and will give it another go tomorow and see how it goes, cheers fella :thumb:

do you think any of them welds would be good enough to mount rails for bucket seats?
Rails are kind of tricky as you're welding thicker spreader plates to thinner sill/tunnel pieces, have a practice welding your thicker stuff to thinner Nova material first. Pop over at some point and I can chop you some Nova roofskin off?

Looks good, staying black?
Why paint though when you need to stitch weld it still?
turbojolt
18-09-12, 06:25 PM
just wanted to cover it in some paint, it been sitting in a thin coat of primer since being sandblasted, and from what ive read and told primer absorbs water so not ideal to leave it like that, also now i can see alot of high/low spots so i can redo the lows in some high build primer and sand the highs
its still being stiched just have to wire wheel off the paint around the seam as and when i find someone to do it, engine bay is staying black and the floor pan is going black aswell
Surely there must be someone in the mids who will do it for you for beer.
Honestly if i was closer i would come and do it for 24cans.If its all prepped its a couple of hours work if that

its the only hole on the tank and as i like top restore rather then replace everything how could i go about fixing this?
im thinking of having the tank powder coated, so if it went off to sand blasting, could i use a chemical metal before the powder coating stage
also gave these a good wire brush ready for paint

Tank is scrap unless you weld it.
Weld a fuel tank!! Good luck with that! Not something i'd fancy doing, chemical metal if you trust it TJ
Aslong as the fuel is drained out its alright.

dont know if its going to be a waist of money having it sandblasted, it looks worse then it really is now Ive wire wheeled it back
might just do it and try and weld a plate over the hole, either way its practice i guess :tard:

I would not weld it they can go BANG! try brazing it ( I hope the spelling is correct)

Aslong as the fuel is drained out its alright.
It's not the petrol that's the problem it's the fumes from the petrol which are in there.
Well im not on about tipping it out then going, yep, that'll do then striking up the welder am i:roll:
Just saying if you make sure the fumes are absolutely gone then its perfectly safe to do so.

Try Nottingham radiators. They pressure tested mine to make sure there was no holes or weak spots, and brazed up a hole. Also came back painted in a stone guard black paint. Wasn't to expensive either

Fill the tank with water and weld, or even petrol, remember its the fumes that are flammable. Water would be your best best though :)
or use petrol patch, amazing stuff :)

yes but a fuel tank that looks like a collander is never ever going to fix properly for that sort of money... but a new one will give 25 odd years service...

If your sand blasting it it won't bother you if you fill it with sand to do the welding repairs then.
For the cost of a new one it would be better to get one IMO
Fill the tank up with water if you must weld it. However for the price of a new tank you'd be silly to even bother.

got the engine on the stand after work, thats as far as i got as i need to go buy a suit for my uncles funeral
going to give it a clean and some paint, black block, silver gearbox and just leave the rocker cover and timing belt case as they are (standard) just with a good clean up
wasn't going to mess with the engine (later Xe) but decided as Ive got the earlier flat flywheel i may as well chuck that on with a new clutch, as thats nearly on the rivets, the pot flywheel is massive compared to the flat one, will have to weigh them and see just how much the weight difference is, also going to treat it to a good service (plugs, oil, filters, belts, water pump, thermostat etc etc..) going to get a 8v gasket for it aswell as the one currently on it is clearly weeping (loads lol)
not going to go any further with the engine then that for now, want to get it handling spot on before chasing more power
p.s forgot i might send the injectors off to be ultrasonic cleaned aswell
I love flapdiscs.

went to go get hammerite paint for the block, but fook me over 40 quid for it :O im going to have a shop about for it and see if i can get it any cheaper
I wouldn't bother with modern hammerite, it's been sold on to another company that decided to go green, they've dropped the VOC content of it and in the process made it ****. You can identify old and new from the "x years protection" claim on the tin but I can't remember which way round it is now.
I believe the POR stuff that Iaiaiaiaiain used a lot comes in various colours?
Also gunk is pretty weak compared to comma hyperclean... any half decent motor factor should stock it, get a little tin and try them both maybe :)
turbojolt
07-11-12, 02:06 PM
seems as the engine is out and on a stand, im going to scrape most of the crap off, then give it a go over with a stiff nylon brush before the gunk goes on as a last final stage of the wash
im not just going to brush the stuff on and hope for the best, bit of elbow grease first lol
fair enough, chances are you'll run out with that tiny tin though, far too tempting to splash it about :p if/when you do give hyperclean a go, it's honestly a lot better :)

meh if it twists it twists, Ive spoken to people that have run big power novas and didn't bover welding and they never had a problem, if this engine comes out for a let, then i will have it all sandblasted back all plated and welded etc..
and to be truthful Ive decided not to bover welding the rest of the legs aswell, the factory welds are more then likely stronger then my shocking welding skills, i know people will completely disagree with all of this but I'm not fussed, I'm convinced that the story's of twisted bays are from shockingly **** shells

Worst excuse ever the reason a nova bay twists is the suspension arm bolts to the cross member so under strain its like a jack hammer banging away on the cross member to its good for nothing.
