Next stop MOT....

Okay so I now own a Nova GSI. :d
Found here in a little town called Stramproy here in the Netherlands, close to Kleine Brogel in Belgium, that'll sound familiar for some of you (Belgium PNG Trip) where Joeri had her stalled for the last year. He planned to restore the car but never got to it. So lucky me was googling last week and came across his ad.
Had a look at the car last week and it's in stunning condition.
Picked her up this morning. Pics will follow.
From the first view it doesn't look to rusty or damaged. But we'll have a closer look tomorrow morning.
The engines runs smooth. It's a C16SE with DIS.
Sorted tax and insurance today.
Things to sort out:
New front doors.
Just bought a brand spanking new N/S door for € 112,50 in Germany. There are still 2 left so check out eBay dot de and search for Corsa A tür. O/S door is available within the Netherlands but someone ordered it weeks ago. If the order isn't confirmed by this Sunday it's mine!
Also ordered new side skirt sills left and right, just in case.
Some work on rear quarters and arches, nothing to serious.
2 new tyres, my dad works for Michelin, so that won't be to much of a problem... ;)
Full respray this winter.
Tomorrow I'll shoot some more pics to post on here over the weekend.

Still not over 15 posts so pics will have to wait. :tard:
Car was MOTed today and passed without any trouble...
Work done over the weekend:
Fitted 2 new rear brake cylinders L+R
Fitted 2 sets rear brake shoes L+R
Changed brakefluid and bled whole brakesystem
Fitted 2 new windscreenwipers
Changed the oil and filters
Fitted new sparkplugs + leads
Sourced brand new N/S and O/S front doors.
Now I'm after two front wings.
Things to do next week (combined):
Refresh coolant
Change drive belt
Change waterpump
I'll have to drop by at Niek's place later this week to pick up some small interior and dash parts.
Cheers!

I think it's of a Mk1, or Astra Mk2. Will have to sort that out asap. Needs to be replaced with an original headlight switch though.
I sold my old Nova (China Blue LF-22-GT) to Niek back in 2004, stuffed it to the roof with parts for a rebuild that never took place. Thank god Niek stored all these bits and parts for me.

Feeling a bit sad for selling on the old China Blue one. Admittedly, it was well past its best but being an early 1984 Nova it'd have been worth keeping it. Oh well, decisions decisions... Perhaps you can post up some piccies of your old pride and joy?

Guys, I need to swap the steeringwheel. Should I go for:
1. Original GSI steeringwheel (prefered because original)
2. Momo Race steeringwheel (prefered because it looks better and has a leather grip)
I want to keep the car as original as possible but I think the original GSI steeringwheel is made of plastic or am I wrong? I prefer a leather steeringwheel.
As for the sunvisors, I thought al GSI's were equipped with sunvisors like the Sri's have, so with lights build in, but mine are poverty spec standard...
Thanks!
GSi wheel is rubber, I'd go for the std gsi probs.
The GSi sunvisors are povo spec, Seen some people dye the blue/red sri ones though.
scott.parker
05-05-11, 09:29 PM
If its me i would buy a new gsi wheel, but also fit a sparco suade one, an as alex said, for some strsnge reason sri novas had better sun visors, gsi was just standard greay bog rubish lol

Bought a very clean original GSI steeringwheel in Aachen (Germany) tonight. Will swap tomorrow. Funny thing is, it doesn't have the red coloured ring round the Opel logo on the horn button...
Now I'm after a standard backbox, found two boxes:
original with chrome end pipe
original with black end pipe
I think I'll opt for the chrome one. Anyone seen an original backbox with black end pipe on a C16SE before?
Cheers!

Jeff,
You seem to be missing the headlamp level switch - or was this not an option on euro models?
Joff
Vlietje
18-05-11, 07:51 PM
Joff,
Headlamp level switch was an option in the Netherlands, as were leccy windows and the sunroof. Dutch Gsi's with leccy windows and a sunroof are very very rare. The wiring for the headlamp level switch is in place, both behind the dash and in the engine bay. All I need to do is connect the switch and source some headlamps with headlamp range control motors.
Will have to source a new headlamp switch housing, but I think these Mk2 parts are all at Niek's as I stuffed the old blue one with spare parts when I sold it to Niek back in 2004.
Cheers!

Jeff,

Joff
Correct Joff - I had the control switch and headlamp range control motors fitted at my friendly Opel dealer right after I had bought my GSi (which was a typical poverty-spec Dutch GSi without any fancy options).
Niek
Get a pair of uk spec lights with motors, remove the glass and swap with euro spec glass?

Bazil, that could be an option. But since I want to restore it I'm opting for a new pair of headlamps with motors. Found a pair in 'Die Heimat' (Germany).

Picked up a new air inlet duct from my local Opel dealer today as the old one is held together by ducktape...
Seems to be the wrong one. I need the air inlet duct for a C16SE (90410785/834430) and this was an air inlet duct for a Mk3 Astra with a C16SE engine.
Two weeks ago another Opel dealer told me the part was NLS. This Opel dealer told me the correct duct was still available. Anyone who knows if the part is still available in the UK? As said GM part number is 904 107 85 and Opel/Vauxhall item number is 834430.
Thanks in advance!

Quick question, check the pic below. The top of the Gsi steeringwheel is closer to the driver then the bottom. In other words, there is a curve in the hoop when you look at it from the side. Is that normal?

By the way, notice the cool keyring my wife gave me... :d

Softstars will be sorted this winter. Had some small technical issues to solve first.
Cleaned the engine bay:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture372.jpg
The coolant hose feeding coolant to the radiator was expanding:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture369.jpg
Cleaned the cooling system cap with vinegar and boiled water because it was blocked and unable to release pressure.
Had to start the engine the last couple of days using my Superb and a set of jump leads. So sourced a new battery and cleaned the battery tray.
Before:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture396.jpg
After:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture403.jpg
Battery fitted:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture404.jpg
Fixed the HT leads, they were fitted the other way around. I assume the HT leads are corresponding to the injectors. So injector 1 is on the far left on this picture (there is a '1' on the injectorloom and that corresponds with the HT lead '1' from the DIS module.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture395.jpg
Anyone who knows the correct partnumbers for the HT lead fixing clips that are missing in this picture, my dealer couldn't find them...
Fitted clear rear clusters with new bulbs and some new NL luxury plates last night. Not to sure about the clear rears though.. will upload a pic asap.
Cheers!

Picked up the mint doors tonight in Germany. Seller wanted to use them for his project but never got to it. He bought them from a guy who had them on his car for one year and then it was stripped. So he claimes them to be only a few years old. They look very very mint, and there's no rust. Will strip and clean them this weekend.

Hi Graeme,
Yes, on it's way to me as we speak, there was one part in back order so posting was delayed without notice and to be honest, I just forgot the chase the guy. Will send the badge over this weekend and latest on Monday. You should have it by mid next week.
I'll keep you posted mate.

That is correct sir - no side repeaters in the Netherlands on Nova's. Good to see it going in hibernation mate. Surely you have taken all necessary actions? Battery out, fresh brake fluid, fresh oil... the lot? ;-)

I'll be using the Irmschers only for show/mood change/whatever.

Since the car is in hibernation I'll have to keep myself busy collecting parts for the rebuild! Plan is to rebuild the engine next spring and sort the engine bay while the engine is out. The rear quarters and full respray are planned for next winter.
I've collected a new genuine Opel O/S front wing yesterday (pics will follow) and sourced a mint GSI interior in the UK, will be picking that up at the end of November. So if some one wants me to bring over big parts from the continent to the UK please let me know!

Tek, not at all, the side skirt rear part was only € 25,00. The rest was way under that. The parcel shelf was the 'most expensive part' at € 47,00. Had it shipped to our German office in Bonn last week where I picked it up as I had some meetings planned there.
The front wing was only € 35,00 had to put some pressure on the seller to sell it to me though.... ;)
Cheers for the comments guys!

Cleaned the Irmschers last weekend. They need to be refurbed though. But the guy who's refurbing them didn't have time for that until beginning of January... Then the centre caps will have to be sprayed separately, as the alloys will be powder coated, so I'll have to sort out new i logo's to go on the centre caps when painted.

So, a small update as the car is still in hibernation.
I've decided to stay with the OEM spec restoration, so the fancy blackpanel Sony radio has to go. Got my hands on a original 1992 brochure and price list. The SC 202 radio was the standard radio for the GSI. The SC 303 was an upgrade. So I sourced some 303's on fleabay. Managed to buy three, just to make sure I have some spare parts etc. This one came with two displays, manual and the original code card.

Edd, Yes I need new 1/4 panels on the rear, N/S is bad, O/S still looks good. But I think it's best to change them both. Found the rear OEM 1/4 panels, will pick them up within two weeks. The O/S door has a hole in it, but I've sourced some very mint replacement doors. Tow bar needs to be removed and a new GSI bumper fitted. Bumper already sourced.
Plan for 2012 is:
Full strip down for the underside of the car.
Front and rear running gear full strip down, blasting and powder coating
Fitting Bilsteins B6 dampers front and rear
Fitting my Eibach Pro-Kit
Change all brakeparts for new gear (ATE or OEM)
Rebuild the engine and sort the engine bay.
Full shell rebuild/strip down/ paint is planned for 2012/2013 to celebrate the car's 20th anniversary...

Nice updates mate - especially love the radio and iPhone gizmo!
BTW what's with your engine needing a rebuild? Sounding rattly or burning lots of oil? Surely not?
Must catch up some time soon!
Take care and nice one on keeping the missus happy - Ellen only rides a bicycle so no lowering springs to keep her happy haha.

Can't find inner wings at the moment... So best thing to do is the repair it, but the inner wings to front side members also shows signs of rust on both sides...

Sure some welding can sort that out... doesn't look good though :(

Well passed APK (MOT) this morning!! I now have exactly one year to sort out the rust. @ Count Vaux Alot you want to show us your fabrication skills on a LHD any time soon?? :d

Friday morning Niek_Nova and myself packed the car for our UK road trip. The Skoda was packed till the roof with panels and small parts.
We had:
1 x Full Nova roof skin
1 x Full Nova Mk2 rear quarter
1 x Nova tail gate
1 x Nova Mk2 LH front wing
1 x Nova MK2 RH front wing
3 x Nova MK1 RH front wing
1 x Cav front wing
1 x Cav rear quarter
1 x Cav rear plate
And some small parts... :eek::eek:
First stop was Clais to board the Eurotunnel at 11:20 CET.
We dropped off parts at Rich, Graeme (who had a very mint Magnex back box for me), Dayle and after arriving at our B&B near Donnie around 22:40PM on Friday night Tahir was waiting for us to pick up his Cav parts. We found out the bar was closed due to a private party and headed back to the room for a good night sleep, two separate beds before you guys ask! lol
Saturday morning 07:30 AM I got a call from Allan and Iain that they had arrived to pick up their parts. After a good chat we went for brekkie and headed to Stu to pick up a GSi bumper and have a closer look at his GSi before it was collected.
All I can say it that the pics don't do justice to Stu's car, what an immaculate example!
Made a very good deal on some (well a lot of) parts that Stu wanted to part with, mostly new parts and OEM, I'm a sucker for that as you know!
We left Stu so he could waive his GSi goodbye in private and headed back down south to catch the return train, unfortunately there wasn't enough time to drop by Joff for a cup of tea and some catching up after more then 10 years. But we'll bring over some Belgium beer for you and catch up at Billing mate!
On our way down we met Martin for whom I picked up a roof skin at OCP. Took the 18:20 train back to the continent and we arrived back at my place at 23:45 PM after exactly 1609km lollollol

Niek then only had to drive up to Lelystad himself thats an extra 100 miles...
I had a lot of fun and Niek enjoyed himself as my private navigator/assistent/Tesco finder/Marmite king/etc...
I'll update tonight with the parts I got for my project...
