Non original new rear clusters, they'll do for now. Were only € 0,50 each...

Guys, need some advise here.

The top water hose is weak, so it's expanding when the pressure builds up and the coolant warms up.

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/a796156c.jpg
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Picture369.jpg

Tried to source a new top water hose, but I can't find one. So I bought two of these:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/2b588284.jpg

Plan is to cut up the new water hose to the shape of the old one.
Thing is I'm not sure both have the same diameter. I think they do, but I just wanted your opinion on this matter.

Thanks in advance!

If you are sticking to GM hoses I think thats the best you can hope for - otherwise why not try a black silicone hose - looks OE and will last longer.

Cheers Joff, checked the Roose website and they do silicone in classic black OE style...

So i finally got to work on the car this weekend. There was some filler on where the chassis leg meets the inner wing, so I investigated that part.

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/c3057293.jpg

I'll have to clean it some more over the weekend, but it needs to be cut out and replaced with fresh metal.
Should I try to source new inner wings or just cut out the rust and replace?

If that's the same side that has the rust in the earlier pictures then I'd replace the inner wing,
It's a fairly straight forward job, But some skill is required,

Have a look at this one I remover earlier lol

One early friday morning at the end of April 2012, the alarm clock woke me up at 4am. Got up, shower and shave, early brekkie and set off to the far far south where Jeffrey lives. Upon arrival, we set to the gargantuan task of fitting a rather large quantity of Nova and Cavalier parts in Jeff's Skoda. How we managed to squeeze it all in there is still beyond me...

http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff333/nova_niek/nova/UK%20tour%20april%202012/atthecrackofdawn.jpg

Not long after, we left for Calais. On the way there, we passed through sunny Belgium. Except it wasn't sunny that day. lol

On the way, we came across a friendly Briton and his loon near a tall chimney. :thumb:

Once again en route, we noticed UK lorries are considerably taller than mainland ones. Anyone know the maximum height? Must be near 5 metres (16ft 5in) I guess.

The next day, Jeff and myself were struck by the sheer awesomeness (if such a word exists) of Stu's soon-to-be-ex Nova. These pics do not do it justice, it has to be seen in the metal. This motor is a sight to behold. Stunning!

the mainland of europe is standardised at 4.0m..

true - the Belgians have their way with mayonaise :d
Helmann's is rather hard to come by down my end of Cloggieland :(

and i can't believe that you came to england & only came away with marmite & irn bru, i bet the shop staff were laughing when you paid for it

It must be quite obvious how seriously addicted to Marmite I am. Round here, we can only get the pathetically weedy 125gr jars. And not the Marmite XO or Ma'amite variety. Hence, I raided the Doncaster Sainsbury of its entire stock. lol And yes, they were laughing. :)

Irn Bru is simply not available in the Netherlands. Period.

they are trying to ban irn bru because of all the food colourant they use in it...

Hardly surprising, Irn Bru is the closest you get to drinkable dayglo paint. Must be good then! ;)

While the girls on here were discussing groceries, I was actually working on my car instead of buying parts... :d

First thing this long Ascension Day weekend (gotta love a long weekend!) was swapping the antenna for a more decent one.

So here goes:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/eeb6c406.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/195a3a7e.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/ec977816.jpg

Yes I now, I posted four piccies for an antenna swap... :wtf: But it makes such a difference, you all know it makes sence!!
By the way did you notice the little joy riders behind the wheel??

Next up was to swap the headlamps as the reflector on the right hand side turned black on the inside. See pic above!

First I fitted the the invisible headlamps and indicators I bought from Joff lol:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/65fe91fa.jpg

After removing the headlamps and indicators, this is what I was faced with:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/9924f571.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/a28cea0c.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/b51c412f.jpg

Cleaned off the rust, sanded the area down and brushed some zinc primer on the affected area. The front panel will be replaced this winter so I couldn't be bothered too much. Fitted new headlamps clips.

Indicator plugs, the one on the left was cleaned at this stage:

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/4c0e8f47.jpg

Headlamps fitted:

This worked! All the fog is out now, mainly due to the fact that I remove the sidelamp socket and just let it dry in the sun, the weather here is perfect now, yesterday we had up to 31,5 C in the afternoon! Bring on the BBQ!!

Yes, I'm planning on rebuilding the engine and front end this winter.

Stu picked up this GSi rear bumper for me a few months ago:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/83ed9b88.jpg

On closer inspection two of the clips on one side were knackered:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/9f125625.jpg

http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/5f5740b4.jpg

Exhaust cut out was wider then original:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/5d89e7e5.jpg

So when a new GSi rear bumper in primer came up for sale I negotiated a fair price and picked it up yesterday:

Car is in storage since beginning of June. Not planning on starting before this winter. Collecting parts at the moment, plan is to rebuild front end and engine over winter underside next spring and sort bodywork next winter. In the meantime I take the car out for a spin now and then.

Ordered a set of new inner wings and front left Mk2 wing from Greece. Should be arriving next week. Also ordered a GSi RH chassis leg (thanks Bazil), support braces left and right that go on the outside of the inner wings underneath the front wing and the strut top reinforcement plates, all new and original GM.

Cheers!

The car will receive a thermal paint removal process to remove all under body coating and seam sealer, then the chassis will be mildly blasted. After the welding all bolt on parts will receive a KTL treatment before being painted with primer. Under body will be done in rubber coating.

Vlietje
21-05-13, 12:27 PM
Well he does want the job, but with zero experience I was wondering what would be a fair price for a full rebuild incl respray...

Mine needs the exact same treatment as Kieth's, this needs to be done:

New front part welded in
New inner wings welded in left and right
New inner wing support braces welded in left and right
New front chassis legs welded in left and right
New sills welded in left and right
New rear quarter welded in left and right
New roof skin welded in
New rear part welded in

New bonnet
New doors left and right
New tailgate

Parts are not included in the price.

Some work needs to be done on the underside incl under-body coating removal.
The shell will be blasted twice, once before welding and once after welding to prep before coating/respray.

Full respray inside and outside incl engine compartment and under-body color coded.

I'll post up his offer in the club section as soon as I receive it.

Thanks Benn, I'm very peased with the result, now all I need to do is adjust the headlights after connecting the range control switch. My garage put liquid rubber on the back of the headlamp units because the range control motors were not lining up correctly and the reflector had some play. That's an MOT failure over here. Took me at least two hours the get all the rubber out of the unit again.

Thanks! He deffo was. But he hated Nova's... LOL

As my RH door is beyond saving I managed to get myself a good RH door in the right colour (E265 tech violett as they call it over here).
Door is 98%, some small spots but it'll hold for some more years. I'm refusing to use one of my other doors at the moment.

How I got it:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0279_zpsvi11pr7y.JPG (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/vlietje1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0279_zpsvi11pr7y.JPG.html)

How it is now, rub strip removed and clay barred:
http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee371/vlietje1/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0288_zps6xkl3v40.JPG (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/vlietje1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0288_zps6xkl3v40.JPG.html)

Will be removing the rub strip residue tomorrow. Glass and rubbers will also be removed, I'll clay it again and give it a good buff and then some wax. Fit a new GSi logo and then I'll swap it over next week.
What's the best approach for drilling the hole for the electric window/central locking wiring loom?

Also got these for € 1,00 each bargain!!

Didn't know you could get rubber rocker cover gaskets!

They fit all 8v engines? Loads better seal than cork ones I would think

Benn

Edd i can get them for a fiver...

Novasport
24-02-14, 05:54 PM
I think you have to fit a later rocker cover as they have round inserts that go into the seal and stop the cover being tightened down too far.

Vlietje
24-02-14, 07:26 PM
Think they only fit the later C16SE not the earlier E16SE...

I did think that after posting reply

Even with gasket sealant I can't stop the crap cork gasket leaking on my sport, only done 350 miles ffs lol

I'm sure there is a rubber coated cork gasket that is a later part number but I have no idea what it is

Novasport

The rubberised one again is used for the later rocker cover. I was told by a technician where I used to work to fit the gasket with grease. I did it and it has been on over 3 years with no signs of a leak so far.

Good work

You not fitting all the new panels yet then mate?

Vlietje
10-07-14, 03:43 PM
Cheers Edd, although I'm not doing a thing here yet... lol

No, I want to save them for later use. My panel beater know's what he's doing and he told me that it would be a shame to use the new panels now as it's relatively easy to cut out the rust and weld in new patches. Plus I don't want to spend too much money on the GSi, but it needs to be safe to drive though. Hence why I've bought a new fuel tank and will be changing all fuel lines in the coming weeks.
Panel beater is on holiday as from tomorrow so we'll continue upon his return in two weeks... We've already cut out the exhaust system and I will be stripping the underside before respraying it with U-Pol Gravitex. We've made a plan to restore the full underside over winter including the two rear arches and the sills. I'll be doing as much work myself in his bodyshop to keep the costs down on this project. I have no experience with grinding/stripping/sanding a car so that should be a fun job!!
