i thought i may as well make a project thread

i bought this car from archie at christmas 2009

120 mile drive home in a 1.0 4 speed isnt fun haha, i spun it on the way home in the snow which wasnt a good start to my nova ownership

the car now has a c14se fitted to it which i aquired from a mate who had a damaged corsa but the engine was fine

i took the engine gearbox and brakes off and fitted them to my car

the cars now running FK coilovers on the front pretty much lowered as far as they can go and has custom rear springs which are about 100mm i think with spax shocks

also has a sparco strut brace aqnd is fully poly bushed at the front, im gonna do the rear soon. its a pretty stiff ride but handles really well

next mods were a gsi dash and digi dash, wasnt actualy too hard to fit and wire in using the guide on here and my trusty haynes manuals

my gf bought me some richbrook stuff aswell to make inside look better lol, i also retrimmed my doorcards with black fabric which actualy look quite good just need some gsi door cappings now

also has an astra gte bonnet vent, the car came with black alloys but i resprayed them white

the car is going to be painted hopefully this week so the engines coming back out so the bay can be done as well

its getting 2 new sills put on tomorrow and i need to fit another door i have sitting as the other 1 is rotten inside

ive already replaced the other door lol its also had rear arch panels aswell which were done before i bought the car

as you can see im smoothing the front bumper and will be doing the same to the rear

future plans are to fit cesaros with black spokes and the rest white

i also have a full set of sport stickers from dmb graphics which will be fitted after the respray

im thinking about fitting a gsi spoiler aswell but we shall see

thanks for reading ill keep it updated now :)

a little surprice with the new lower panel thats been welded in :(

the engine bay needs a good sanding down, im gonna take it all back to bare metal to get rid of any

its all surface rust thats there at the moment so no holes

its gonna be fun putting the engine back in once its all painted without scratching it all

stevenf
01-03-11, 05:13 PM
i just sold my gte bumper about two weeks before you got the door aswell.

swedge
01-03-11, 05:16 PM
lol thats usualy how it goes

whats the difference between a gte and standard mk1 rear?

i can get a standard mk1 rear from the scrappies

LEWI007
01-03-11, 05:37 PM
Standard mk1 rear bumper doesnt have a splitter on the bottom or wnywhere for one to attach to properly.

A GTE One has a big splitter across the bottom and if you take it off theres little holes for it to clip into.

If you could get hold of the splitter you can screw it on to the mk1 bumper, it wont look as good as a proper one but it will look ok, i did this before.

swedge
01-03-11, 05:38 PM
if i cant get 1 before it gets sprayed ill just leave that 1 on untill i can get a gte 1 then paint that

stevenf
01-03-11, 05:42 PM
i will keep an eye out over this way for a gte bumper for you

swedge
01-03-11, 05:50 PM
cheers mate

stevenf
01-03-11, 06:07 PM

swedge
01-03-11, 06:09 PM

stevenf
01-03-11, 06:52 PM
Small carbed engine from 1.0 to a 1.6. Just had a nosey in my garage and spotted a mk1 rear bumper if that's any use to you,

swedge
01-03-11, 08:06 PM
are the brackets ok on the inside that slide into the rear quarters?

ill give him a text and ask but i dunno if he'll have any carb

stevenf
01-03-11, 09:28 PM
Brackets are a little rusty from sitting but feel strong enough

swedge
02-03-11, 05:06 PM

swedge
02-03-11, 05:07 PM
this is the first vaux engine i have stripped the other have had tappets and to get rid of the tap on them i had to get new shims made up

how do i go about it on this engine as theres no tappets lol

mowgli
02-03-11, 05:20 PM
hydraulic lifters.... strip them & clean them. lightly oil them when you assemble them, and then stick them in the engine. when the oil pumps round the heads, they will pump up & run fine.

swedge
02-03-11, 05:28 PM
The litters will be the sausage shaped things adjacent to each valve lol

Are they easy enough dis-asembled

stevenf
02-03-11, 05:32 PM
you just lift it out its holder. they look like this (http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://i.ebayimg.com/23/!BWugJo!BWk~%24(KGrHgoOKkYEjlLmY4pPBKY1QB2,pQ~~_35 .JPG&imgrefurl=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HYDRAULIC-TAPPETS-LIFTERS-VAUXHALL-CORSA-1-2-1-4-8V-X8-/390071287781&usg=__7UaFXvnNY6UhOfr5Uj_PetnLs2A=&h=164&w=300&sz=4&hl=en&start=19&zoom=1&tbnid=zbG7XX5zMVk4xM:&tbnh=85&tbnw=155&ei=F39uTf7MIpGu8QPNwIj7Dg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dvauxhall%2Bhydraulic%2Blifter%26um%3D 1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D556%26tb s%3Disch:10%2C578&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=606&vpy=269&dur=452&hovh=131&hovw=240&tx=129&ty=73&oei=BX9uTbejLIuusAPMupXPCw&page=2&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:17,s:19&biw=1345&bih=556)

use a small vice or g clamp to compress them, then use a small screwdriver to pop the retaining ring off, then undo the vice or clamp. if you are lucky, it will fall apart easily, or you may need to wrap a rag round it & use a plier to pull it apart.. do not damage the shiny stuff.. then use a chemical cleaner (i used flash & soaked them for a bit, then wiped them clean, then put a tiny tiny drop of engine oil in & put it back together opposite to how you took it apart... saves buying new ones.

T-cut the digi dash lens it will come up really good but don't put too much on near the mph/kph switch.

Bit of advice, jacks like that arn't best for the sills. If you use the jack lift on the rear beam.

swedge
03-05-11, 07:18 PM
yeah the prepping of the car has taken the longest

when you stand a good few meters away the surface looks fine, its when you start sanding/filling/priming/high-build primer that you realise all the small deep scratches small dings and scrapes

i must have went round the car about 20 times with a black marker marking every ding and scratch lol

if i dont fix it now it will look 10 tyimes worse when painted

cheeky little pic of the exhaust

has a stainless system now that i bought for a huge £20 but didnt have a back box so made 1 fit with a bit welding

theres a bit of a rattle near the gearstick part of the exhaust so will need to get it up and have a look

Good point well made, i know mine has melted the bumper and leaves burn marks on it because its so close, i will need to get it sorted i think lol.

are you keeping the bonnet vent on it mate ?:)

swedge
13-06-11, 11:59 AM
for now yeah, both sides of the bonnet have been painted with the vent in it

i have another vent if your looking for 1?

just phoned the painter and he has made a bit of a **** up :(

it now has a sport decal kit on it and he has put the stickers that say "sport" in the wrong place

i could cry lol

ryansnova
13-06-11, 12:27 PM
lol im actily loking fr 2 :(

swedge
13-06-11, 12:35 PM
aright sorry only have the opposite 1 to the 1 on my bonnet

ryansnova
13-06-11, 12:41 PM
cheers enyway mate im thinking of just getting a bonnet with the vents in it so i can cut the astra bonnet round the vents and cut a nova bonnet at the same bit and put the bit of astra bonnet into the nova bonnet lol

eny pics of how yours is on ?:)

swedge
13-06-11, 12:44 PM
yeah that would be the best way then weld and smooth it

i just cut a hole slightly smaller, the wider part of the vent has clips that slide onto the bonnet but the front has a small lug

i drillled a hole for the lug then put a small piece of brake pipe over the lugon the underside of the bonnet then with a small screw to hold the pipe onto the lug which stops it comming off

ill take some pics when i get it back for you

ryansnova
13-06-11, 12:46 PM

finish fitting electric windows and central locking
retrim door cards again since fitting electric windows
tracking
fit windows
fit all the trim and rubber seals that were removed
fit new bigger brakes
sort exhaust rattle

swedge
14-06-11, 05:37 PM
got the car back today, kinda dissapointed in the stickers being in the wrong place but can sort it after i leave the paint for a week or 2

id like to state this is not a sport rep i just really liked the graphics on them so bought some :)

really chuffed with the outcome of the paint though the finish is superb

Looks quality! Which stickers are in the wrong place?

swedge
14-06-11, 06:07 PM
the bonnet sticker is the most obvious one, if you look in the sport section you will see why lol

and the word sport on the rear quarters should be on the grey stripe not the yellow

swedge
14-06-11, 06:50 PM
haha do you spy some rust mowgli? its actualy rusty water and very minor surface rust which will be sorted

i am pretty chuffed with it, makes all the times ive been out in the pissing rain fixing and and spending days and days of very boring sanding finaly worth it

learned quite alot on the way too, bought a welder (nova owners must), fitted sills digi dash etc

swedge
15-06-11, 10:03 PM
yeah i managed to get a mint gte bumper with the brackets intact so its all fitted propely now

i could do with another interior, any pics of standard sr seats so i can see the shape

Southie
15-06-11, 10:18 PM
These are MK1 sr seats but the shape is similar on the MK2 versions or even tbh the Gte or GSI seats ;)

swedge
15-06-11, 10:43 PM
another thing thats annoying me is the tapping noise, it sounds like the tappets but also sounds like 2 sea shells hitting each other (lol at my description haha)

when i put the engine back together i stripped and cleaned the lifters and the tapping went away after i ran it for a bit

im hoping it goes away but ive only ever ran it for a few seconds as im waiting on a plug for my oil pressure sender, its sat for 3 weeks without it being run so hopefully it is just the oil in the tappets

swedge
19-06-11, 01:40 PM
right in a dilemna on what to do

i was planning on changing the engine at the end of the year, was going to fit a c16se and run it on r1 carbs using megajolt as the ignition

i also wanted to buy a spare head for it and have a little project on porting and polishing it myself as a little learning curve for me

but now i thought to myself aboujt staying with the 1.4 and running that on carbs, would r1's be overkill on a c14se? id also run it on megajolt too

i know the basicly the same engine with little differences, but if i stayed with the 1.4 id have cheaper tax and probably cheaper insurance

plus i wouldnt have to send the v5 off again which i still havent got back after about 6 months being away lol

ryansnova
19-06-11, 02:03 PM
i would go for tuning the 1.4 mate but its upto you lol

swedge
19-06-11, 02:10 PM
yeah i was thinking more toward that, fitting a c16se is an easy way of getting about 15-20bhp but with the cost of insurance rise dont know if it would be worth it

painting the floor white? :d

now that would be telling lol, donnt do the hole floor of the car and put some anti rust crap on it then decide what to paint it with

swedge
20-06-11, 12:42 PM
got the boot floor under the car cleaned back with the wire wheel and one of the drain plugs was a tad larger than it should be so just welded it up and gave the back a good coat of underseal

just got the front of the car to do now but im gonna get some 3mm steel bar and cut the tops off the chassis rails like benn has done in his project as mine are a bit ugle looking

got some new stainless p clips with rubber inserts for the fuel pipes as well

swedge
21-06-11, 06:55 PM
well had a little problem with it being under power so pulled off number 1 lead and no change in note or tone

swapped the plugs and leads around and its still number 1 cylinder

took off the fuel rail to check the injectors and thier all getting voltage whilst cranking

spent 20 mins hunting the bloody rubber o ring off the top off one of the injectors

now the schrader (sp?) valve is ****ed for some reason leaking out fuel, tried tightening it but its all the way in already

so now io need a fuel rail from a gsi or sri or any c14se/c16se engine but im skint till friday so itll have to stay off the road till then?

im hoping its just the injector thats ****ed or blocked as im getting voltage at the plug when cranking

if im getting fuel from all injectors what could it be?

swedge
21-06-11, 11:05 PM
anyone have a fuel rail for a c14se or c16se?

swedge
22-06-11, 04:06 PM
well gonna take the injectors to work tonight and put them through the ultrasonic cleaner

i tested them with my multimeter and was getting 14ohms through them and haynes says anything between 1 and 16 means thier working lol

im gonna put a bolt in place of the schrader valve just now untill i get a rail of stevenf at the weekend

mowgli
22-06-11, 04:18 PM
i'm interested in the ultrasonic thingy, is it a proper injector one, or a general one?? and whay would you charge for sticking a spare set i have, thru it??

swedge
28-06-11, 09:13 AM

hopefully mr colinesmith has one for me as i aint paying the price for new lol

well got my self a new rotary as i wanted a change from my silverline, i got the ep800 from cleanyourcar.co.uk along with some menzerna polishes

it came with 3 polishes,

Menzerna Fast Gloss S500 - 250ml
Menzerna Power Finish P203s - 1000ml
Menzerna Final Finish PO85RD - 100ml

it also comes with 4 pads,

5" Lambswool pad
6" Yellow High-Cut Polishing Foam
6" Blue Medium-Cut Polishing Foam
6" White Finishing Foam

also comes with a spare set of brushes and cleanyourcar branded carry case which is quite smart, its pretty light compared to my silverline as this one is only 2kg

anyway heres some pics from my gf's tigra that i bought her for her birthday, excuse the pics as i have a crappy iphone

i used these polishes on the tigra apart from the fast gloss S500 as the paint wasnt too bad and the power finish P203s removed the swirl marks then finished with the final finish PO85RD. i could have finished with the power finish as it left a really glossy finish. the meguiars liquid carnauba wax was all i had with me at the time so that went on after the polishing

yeah it's a 130bhp 20seh, that was the first thing I checked lol it's also got an F16cr box on it too :)

Hopefully with these mods I should be past xe power and before anyone else days just buy an xe I got the full car I'm breaking for less than the going rate for an seh engine lol

What kinda power do you think I'd get with

Port and polish

R1 carbs

And a cam of some sort but struggling to find info on a cam for this engine

Any recommendations?

i would of thought a 2.25in exhaust would be efficient enough for your spec and regarding the cam maybe give autosprint or kent a call, they should be able to sort something out for you or point you in the right direction

just done the combustion champer part of the head for those ports and now onto the rest of the ports, there was a huge bit that stuck out just under the exhaust port on number 3 cylinder which is now gone so should flow alot better :)

pics up soon#

Remember you dont want the ports to smooth, as the ruffness adds and air and fuel to mix better.

Good work tho.

Looks good but if you look at where the front bumper meeets the wing you can see 2 totally different colours and looks odd.

Id match the paint to the grey sport stickers across the side of the car and paint the bumper and grille with it so the whole bottom half of the car is all the same colour.

The sport stickers aren't a solid grey though, they start grey at the top then fade off into the colour of the car the stickers only go half way down the car

The bottom half of the car is the same as the bumpers it looks darker as your seeing the reflection of the road everything was painted with the same paint at once

scottish meet at knockhill on the 11th if you fancy it bud? trying to get as many novas together as possible

28-08-11, 10:40 PM
Oh right.

I would try and blend some grey paint down the bumper and fade it out like the stickers, or maybe buy some more sport stickers and wrap the bumper in it or something.

Do you plan on painting the splitters grey ?

Love the wheels aswell.

Not too sure on the splitters yet and trying to match up another set of stickers to the bumper would bf impossible plus with the price of them I don't fancy cutting them up lol

As for the knockhill meet my car won't have an engine in it, im going to the trackday in Wales on the 1st so got 4 weeks to get the 20seh in and running on r1 carbs and megajolt lol
