cheers mate just a bit pissed off with the engine bay now, there was small surface rust bits but down i went over then with the wire wheel ill be better cutting it and welding

its just a couple small patches about 5p pieces but its annoying lol, im gonna try and weld it so that it cant be seen

swedge
06-09-11, 01:23 PM
all removed just have to weld the tabs on underneath the lights as they are gone

quick trial fit

right guys need some bhp figures lol

what do you reckon i should be reaching with this spec

20seh 2.0 8v 130bhp standard
r1 carbs
megajolt ecu
274 cam from autosprint
port and polish head
4-2-1 manifold heatwrapped
2.5" exhaust system
vernier pulley (obviously needs set up)

swedge
06-09-11, 07:11 PM
ill probably spray it myself using the compressor, i cant paint panels easy enough with a perfect finish just never done a full car

problem is steve is like 20+ miles away and would need to trailor it over

finally got a crane tonight so engine will be out tomorrow then i can start on the bay

im waiting on my cam being returned from autosprint then i can put the seh back together and get it dropped in

ive also got a pre-made loom and megajolt ecu from tom reid :)

Add about 25bhp, so with the old 2.0 8v being quite old now you'll have about 120bhp lol

I was thinking the same lol

my 'UN Educated' guess would be around 150-155HP, if the engine is perfect and still produces the original 130hp.

But ive no idea thats just my rough guess from odd bits of reading stuff through the internet.

Swedge with your spec mate what you have is a XE slayer haha, 8v FTW!!!

I wreckon you will be looking at about 165 - 170bhp which will kick in very quickly, whos setting up your carbs?

yeah hopefully :) with the cr box i should have some good acceleration :) but bad mpg lol

ive drilled the jets out already and once its running im taking it over to a bike place a couple miles away so they can balance them and check them over etc

ive went the expensive way on the carb setup

im using megajolt, ive had a pre-made loom made up from tom reid to my spec so i dont have any wiring to do

im using a bogg bros manifold as well which was near enough £200

cost me £100 for the carbs

all you basicly need to do to set the carbs up is drill the jets out and it should run, then take it to a rr or fit a wideband lambda and check the fueling is ok or just judge it by driving it

When i looked into it, was custom loom and megajolt expensive???

Isn't there other mods needed such as accelerator cable and alt bracket?

swedge
07-09-11, 11:34 AM
well ive been told i can use my original throttle cable and just put a solderless nipple on the end

you will need a choke cable, i got a universal one that locks from ebay for £10

alternator braket is easy enough to make from an original, i just extended it with a slot through it for adjustment

tom reid can supply you with all the megajolt stuff for around £200 all you need to do is make up the loom with that he sends you an plug it into the m/j

you can pay him a bit extra and he will make you a loom up so its just plug and play, he asks you what lengths you need i.e. from the crank sensor to where you want the ecu to sit

to do it the easyier way and cheaper you will need

set of bike carbs £50-£150
cav dizzy £50?
inlet manifold make your own or buy second hand or buy from bogg bros £200
make you own alternator bracket
choke cable £1-£15

it can be done alot cheaper obviosuly if your willing to go to scrappies etc or wait untill second hand stuff comes up

swedge
07-09-11, 01:38 PM
i give up now, it rains so i put the extension away then it stops so i go back out then it starts again then stops then starts

aaaargh getting annoyed with it now

swedge
07-09-11, 05:59 PM
well after fighting with the rain i managed to get offside strenghtening plate welded on and welded a tab onto the bit underneath the lights so the new front panel has somewhere to weld to

i also cleaned up seams around the turrets and down the chassis legs and put some seam sealer along them as i never last time, hopefully this keeps the water out

how much easier is it to weld thicker steel rather than trying to weld sills on lol, i could rarely get a good run on the sills due to blowing holes but with the plating kit it was alot easier

Looking good mate

swedge
08-09-11, 12:27 PM
yep, im ok at wiring stuff in and joining wires etc

i even managed to wire in a my gsi dash into my mk1 but building megajolt would have been too much lol

swedge
08-09-11, 03:00 PM
well had a bit sunshine today so got eh pessenger side strenghtening plate welded in then ran out of wire, waiting on a roll being delivered as you cant buy flux core wire where i live :(

took the cross member back to bare metal with the wire wheel on the grinder as im "hoping this is the last time i will be changin the engine in it so dont want any rust creeping back through

has anyone ever used that kurust stuff? the stuff you paint on before the colour, supposed to kill rust and stop it from appearing

ive also put plenty seam sealer on this time as i never last time and wished i had

tom reid
08-09-11, 05:51 PM
Thanks for the thanks, lol, but the credit for the MJ loom goes to Al, Prey on here, he does a cracking wiring loom.

swedge
09-09-11, 06:24 AM
Well from the looks of it it looks good :) I'm stuck trying to figure out which bit is for the tps going by the pics lol

swedge
09-09-11, 02:55 PM
well this is my idea for a crank sensor bracket

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/STA40789.jpg

weld the light green parts
drill another hole on the purple part and bolt it
elongate (sp?) the orange hole so i can adjust the bracket before welding

the circle part is like a clamp with a cap screw in it so i can move the sensor in and out to get the distance right then tighten the bold and it clamps it still

what do you think?

obviosuly cut off the extra bar at the bottom

Damo
10-09-11, 10:10 AM
Looks like a good idea mate but have you thought of taking one from a small block engine as they have a bracket at the back of the oil pump dont they mind you not sure if theyd mount up though worth a try?

Something abit like your old 1.4 would have had if it was a late enough engine.

swedge
10-09-11, 12:33 PM
the trigger wheel sits on the inside of the pulley on those engines so would need spaced out, ill have a look at the one on my 1.4 and see what its like

swedge
13-09-11, 12:32 PM
just wrapped the 4-2-1 manifold i recieved and 1 tip lol

dont do it wearing a t shirt, its itchy as **** lol

swedge
16-09-11, 06:28 AM
yeah ive ground it out just thought about putting it on just incase

engine bay need the turret plates welded in and the new front panel welded in

still got the alternator cut out to do but seems easy enough

then paint then fit engine, im gonna video the first turn of the key so you can all lol at me when it dosnt start haha

swedge
20-09-11, 02:46 PM
got the alternator cut out done today

i put the piece of metal in to line it up on the lower cut and it fell inside the chassis leg and i cant get it out, its fell away down by the bottom arm haha

got the lifters all put back together after spending an hour tring to find 1 of the tiny springs that are inside that i managed to drop twice lol

just waiting on my cam lube arriving them i can put the new followers in and get the headbolts in and torqued down

which hose do i need to use to get the radiator to fit

i cant remeber if the radiator was plumbed in when i removed it or not but these are the only 2 hoses i have left

part number on the radiator is 90128036

also just in front of the thermostat is another outlet for water, where does this go? can i just replace it with a bolt?

on the rear of the thermostat there are 2 outlets, 1 of them has a hose to goes into the main hose that comes from the waterpump does the other 1 go to the heater matrix?

swedge

the rubbers on the right were the ones i was trying to fit but couldnt get on, the one on the right is the only 1 that came with the carbs and fits fine

ive measured the one on the right and its 5mm smaller than the one on the left and slightly different inside
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/STA40815.jpg

tom reid
25-09-11, 04:55 PM
The rubbers I sold you are off of R1 carbs, is the one you had an R1?, it should be a nice tight fit.
Try heating them in hot water and then soaking the insides with a lube of some kind, before trying to fit them, if they won't fit I'll happily refund you.

swedge
25-09-11, 04:59 PM
yeah the 1 on the left of the picture is the only 1 that came with the carbs and fits fine

the one on the right, the recess inside the rubber is further inside it and i cant push them far enough on so that they dont fall off

moffat
25-09-11, 05:58 PM
swedge were did you get the managment and can it be ran on any engine or just one with carbs etc? and how much was it? pm if you want to...

swedge
25-09-11, 06:06 PM
it came from tom reid ^^

it only runs the ignitions side of things not fuel, most people use megajolt when running carbs or building kit cars etc also used on rally cars

i guess it could be ran on any engine as it has options for 4-6-8 cylinder cars, tom reid is the man to speak to i bought the full megajolt system from him and also he got me a loom made up to my length that i wanted

saved me trying to make it up

like i said pm tom he knows a fair bit about megajolt

swedge
25-09-11, 06:07 PM
meant to say you could run it on your turbo build as it has options to read the load from a tps sensor or from a vaccum connection on the throttle boddy whixh is what you would use for a turbo

moffat
25-09-11, 06:13 PM
cheers mate ill pm tom then and see what he says

25-09-11, 06:17 PM
Will the alt not touch the chassis being that far spaced over?

swedge
25-09-11, 06:20 PM
Will the alt not touch the chassis being that far spaced over?

wont find out untill its fitted lol, i can still bring it forward another 20-30mm as it clears the carbs fine just quite close to the tps

ill fit it and see if it needs adjusting then see what length of belt i need

swedge
25-09-11, 06:21 PM
do you mean hit the chassis leg?

its in the standard position atm so shoulodnt stick out further than any other xe or 8v

Benn
25-09-11, 09:44 PM
Oh is it? Thought it was spaced over.. The pic with the nuts makes it look like it.

swedge
25-09-11, 09:47 PM
nah its in the same place, the only reason the nuts are there is because the bracket thats on the manifold isnt in the same position as the standard manifold so had to do that to use the standard adjuster

honie5
25-09-11, 10:18 PM
If I'm correct in saying as no one answered your hose question the thermostat pipe connects to the top left of the radiator as you look at your car from the front! It's only a short pipe! If that makes sense and is any use to you!

swedge
27-09-11, 02:27 PM
yeah but what hose do i use? GSI the original hose?

honie5
28-09-11, 02:41 AM
I don't think it matters to be honest because thermostat pipes in same place on all nova engines my brothers pipe he's got on his looks like a question mark (?) Sort of shape if that helps? Aslon as it fits and doesn't look odd just trial and error them mate!

swedge
28-09-11, 04:08 PM
yeah thats what shape pipe i need, i dont have any though as i gave mine away with my old engine as i thought i had the pipe still attacthed to the radiator but i didnt

got my corsa sport front and rear seats today, hopefully getting some sr subframes off stevenf and get them bolted and welded in

the corsa rear bench is slightly wider than the nova one so with a bit headscratching i removed the material and foam from the back piece, the bits that are attached to the rear arches are different same with the hinges so the nova bench will be easier to use

the corsa backpiece is in 2 and my nova is only a 1 piece, so gave the mother a shout and shes gonna stitch the 2 back pieces of material together so its now a 1 piece lol

foam will require slight cutting to shape, i would use the nova foam but its not very "bouncy" and corsa one feels comfier so will be using that

will post some pics up when i attatch it all

swedge
30-09-11, 03:23 PM
got the new front panel welded in today and some primer on the bay, will give it another good rub down then re prime it wetsand it then paint it

06-10-11, 04:15 PM
not much of an update as its pissed down with rain all week, got the bay painted today so maybe get the engine fitted tomorrow

got my megajolt pulley and crank sensor set up today but ive got the pulley in the wrong position

good job ive not welded it on yet haha

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/pulley.jpg

theres more been added to the crank sensor bracket to stop any movement

jonn
06-10-11, 06:29 PM
it can be confusing enough when setting up the trigger wheel, i must of checked mine about 4 or 5 times before i welded it!

06-10-11, 07:35 PM
"runs off to check" lol

swedge
06-10-11, 07:39 PM
haha it is quite large but the size down from that wasnt big enough to stick out from the standard pulley

just checked and the oil filter fits fine lol phew

06-10-11, 07:52 PM
lol good, just the pic looks like it might be. God work on this.

i feel like a tit now haha

alrite swedge did you get a top hose for your radiator?? if not ive got about four or five. if you want one give ees a shout mate

swedge
09-10-11, 12:20 PM
anyone wanna come finish this off, ivegot man flu :(

i should really go fit the exhaust so i can see what length of flexi i need to join the manifold to exhaust but the roads wet lol

swedge
09-10-11, 03:45 PM
well picked my lazy ass up off my seat and got the throttle and choke cables sorted, i used the original throttle cable and just cut the ball off the end then trimmed back some of the black sheath and fitted a solderless nipple

i used a universal locking choke cable from ebay along with a solderless nipple again, choke cable will need shortened once its fitted

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG-20111009-00004.jpg

also my mum got my corsa sport rear bench stitched together for me, i took the material and foam from the corsa bench and fitted it to mine as they are different and mines is only a 1 piece bench

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG-20111009-00005.jpg

swedge
09-10-11, 05:07 PM
got the exhaust cable tied up atm, the exhaust is the right length for joining to the fanimold but is about 2" to the side so ive ordered a 300mm flexi to join them up

only thing im worried about is the exhaust has no silencer on it straight to the back box, once i get it running ill see what its like but i reckon itll need a silencer

got a bit more done today, got the manifold connecting to the main echaust now using a flexi just need to weld some hangers on as theres none on it atm. i have my manifold heat wrapped atm and have plenty left, would it be worth it to wrap the whole exhaust back to the backbox?

i also finished the crank sensor bracket with thicker steel so theres no chance in it flexing, it just needs welded together where the flat bar crosses each oother

i remember someone asked about how close the trigger wheel was to the oil filter, well....... closer than i thought buut still clears in by about 10mm

how close lol

well got the hubs and shafts back on today even though it was pissing down, i managede to loose the m12 nuts that hold the balljoints onto the bottom arm and the bolts are quite a fine thread so spent an hour walking about shops trying to find m12 nuts and bolts and considering i live in a small town its not easy lol

also had a problem with the short shaft which ive posted in the mechanical section

i got the magjolt set up in the house using a 9v battery for power just to test everything and it works :)

heres a screenshot of what the megajolt software looks like for those who dont know

did you get a cable to connect your ecu to your laptop or pc? i still need to get one.

swedge
12-10-11, 08:15 PM
well sorta, theres 3 laptops in my house and none of them have an rs232 port on them

i purchased a rs232 - usb convertor off ebay and works fine

since i used that converter i needed an rj45 (phone cable) - rs232 converter as well. most of these converters dont come pre-wired so i bought 1 from autosportlabs in the usa which they pre-wire and test before they send it to you and works fine

Swedge do you how to check whether its the CR or the LR box you have????

swedge
12-10-11, 09:21 PM
if you take off the passenger side wheel and have a look on the endplate, itll be the only flat bit you can see mines needed a really good clean to be able to read it as its stamped very lightly

mines has a load of numbers then c355 underneath it which means close ratio a wide ratio box will have a w instead of a c

swedge
12-10-11, 09:28 PM
similar to this but its stamped on the flat surface of the endplate you can see

exhaust is 2" so i bought a 2" connector from my local parts

ive just spent the last couple hours bashing **** out of it to get the connector on as i measured it and they were only 45mm

so heres me lying under the car trying to hold the exhaust up and bash it on at the same time while my mums standing there going "whats wrong? isnt it fitting?"

that is 1 thing i absolutely hate when im trying to do something, i had my lump hammer ready to launch at her

well went to change my cam pulley today and my mates borrowed my tools and lost some of my sockets again

i ended up sorting some of the wiring, my plugs on my loom do not fit the radiator or the fan so i had to cut the plugs off and put spade connectors on the end

how do i figure out which way they go though?

ive got the coilpack on the brake servo atm untill i can find somewhere for it, the leads are from a sierra so are quite long so that helps

i also need to find a place for my filterking regulator too

any ideas?

also in my picsw you can see the crankcase breather coming up but it dosnt line up with the inlet on the cam box? i cannot adjust the pipe at all and it dosnt seem to be bent out of shape or anything

back to work tonight for 3 days so wont get much done, once my shafts arrive ill get them on and get the car back on the ground, ive put 3 litres of oil in atm and its barely reading on the dipstick hopefully its just because the cars on ramps and is only 3 litres

not much of an update since ive been hunting for a cam pulley, finally got 1 from a company in bristol who has 10 lol

got it for £15 posted, theres plenty 2.0 8v mk3 cav engines floating about but ive since found mines is from a mk2 cav and has a different pulley than the mk3

i have all the megajolt wired up, just need to fit the battery and connect up the live and thats ready to go

fuel pumps fitted to the side of the spare wheel well above the axlewith a hole drilled and grommeted to feed the wires into the car, i used a 20mm piece of rubber inbetween the pump and the chassis to keep the noise down as it seems pretty noisy but thats with no fuel going through it. its a facet solid state fuel pump im using along with a filter king regulator

when i was fiddling about with the wiring undert the dash today i noticed a bit rust under the carpet on the drivers side beside the sill, my screwdriver when through it :(

its right about the outrigger which isnt too good on its own so im gonna cut the old outrigger out and make a new one from some 2mm sheet

all i can do now is wait on the cam pulley arriving get it fitted torque up the top and bottom pulley bolts

still on the source for a middle silencer though that aint gonna cost me through the roof

Cheeze
17-11-11, 12:10 PM
Did your shafts arrive bud, I ran the pump inside the car on a mount with a bit ofrubber around it

swedge
17-11-11, 12:11 PM
yeah they did mate cheers, thier fitted now :)

my spare wheel is in the way or i would have mounted it inside lol

swedge
17-11-11, 02:26 PM
well seeing as im bored today i took the carpet out the car and ripped the foam crap out as it was absolutely disgusting and full of rusty coloured crap

dont think ill be putting that back in, i wire wheeled any rusty bit and painted with some white gloss

just got a bit welding to do on the outriggers as said before

i also managed to get a stainless silencer made for me from mij exhausts

well i managed to get a price from mij exhausts who sell on ebay and have thier own website etc

£62 delivered which im happy about

it will be 4" round diameter box 24" long and with each end having 2" of pipe, 1 end being 2" and the other 1.75"

had to get the gas burner out and heat them off

also got the timing belt back on with the replacement cam pulley, im hoping its all timed right as i have no timing cover

bottom pulley is easy as theres a mark on the block and the smaller pulley to line them up

brainsnova

swedge
01-12-11, 04:23 PM
it woulda been alot easier if the strut and hub were off giving more room to get it off

I can get a cavvy sri 130 engine for £50,i know its a runner as it's my mates, been lay for 3months,engine loom and box is there as are the shafts, worth buying for 50 notes and doing a rebuild?

swedge
03-01-12, 04:26 PM
definitely for that price, i think they usually sell for around £100-£150
shafts are around £100 with proper cv's
bulletproof engines aswell so ive been told, mine is from an earlier cav around 87 as there are some slight differences but nothing major

make sure it is the sri 130 engine though as you get the c20ne and another one but cant remember what it is, check the stamp on the block in front of number 4 spark plug you should see 20seh

ocdstigy
03-01-12, 04:30 PM
It came out a J reg burgundy cav sri 130,so it is definately that engine,is that the ne or seh engine then? it did have some fuelling issues(started but cut out),some fool fitted a FPR for no reason at all,it had an air filter fitted but no other serious mods,i remember it snapped 2throttle cables while in the cav in short succession :/ but 100% a cavvy sri 130 engine,i think i will be buying this engine tomorow going to buy some tools and getting it stripped asap :D

swedge
03-01-12, 05:18 PM
yeah it will be the 20seh engine which is 130bhp when new, what shafts do you get with it? the cav shafts or 22 spline nova shafts?

get it stripped and get a project thread up

finally got my 20seh running today on r1 carbs and megajolt

all running fine untill the alternator belt came off for some reason

i put it back on and it came off again this time getting stuck behind the lower timing belt pulley i ended up cutting the old alternator belt off as it was all twisted by now

before i fitted the new one i checked the timing, it was bang on when the engine was put in

i put piston 1 to tdc and the cam shaft is now sitting here

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/STA40942.jpg

a good few teeth out, the engine still turns over by hand find and can still hear compression while turning it by hand

something isnt sitting right though to make the alternator belt come off, ive took a few pictures of how i have things set up

bottom timing belt pulley, as you can see its not sitting right

cam pulley
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/STA40935.jpg

the way i have the bottom pulley set up is i put the big washer on first, then the woodruff key, then the pulley them the main bolt and thick washer

is that correct?

well guys remember how close my trigger wheel was to my oil filter

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG-20111011-00008.jpg

well removing that washer which was about 3mm thick has made the trigger wheel hit the oil filter when bolting up

tiny bit of reshaping the my tiny hammer and its sorted :)

well after the car being neglected for a few months i decided to give it a polish

i used my rotary polisher with some menzerna polish, i only used a really fine cutting polish as i dont wanna take alot of it

i also used a cleaner called billbery juice for my wheels, it smells tastey and is great for cleaning alloys

i then used some paste wax i got as a trial from some company i use for stuff

tried for some refelection shots but the sun was pissing off lol

i also have some home made ramps i use but once the car is up on them the sloped part gets in the way if you want underneath

so i dont this :)
