and yeah it is the sill sticker :)
what do you think? good or bad idea?
Good idea Rodney :-)
hopefully look ok, will see on thursday when i fit them
well i had a couple rolls of exhaust wrap left so thought bugger it ill wrap the whole lot haha
need some more metal cable ties and im gonna put some of that safety wire on that you twist to hold everything tight, ive left the bit by the flange on purpose as i need to match it to my big block 4-2-1

Swedge it won't last 2 minutes fully wrapped, it will get hot and start unraveling due to things hitting under the car all the time, you'll probably end up having a glowing exhaust pipe though lol
im gonna get that safety wire stuff and twist it round every foot or so, you wont be able to see it too
if i get any problems ill just remove it

How the hell is the heat going to dissipate? you'll end up with a melted rear bumper, lol
the exhaust wont be too close to the bumper
Whole point of the wrap is to keep engine bay (intake) temps down, no point wrapping the whole system and as said it will just get a bit screwed/hold water and mud, etc etc.
I admire the commitment though lol
bet its pricey though
£30+vat per linear foot I get charged :/
well i had it there lying doing nothing anyway so im not losing any money over it, if it starts ****ing up ill remove it easy enough to take off anyway
its gonna be fun starting it up with all the smoke that comes off it lol
Nice project, I like the sport graphics and engine choice, wish I still had my 2.0 8v, I wanted to run that on R1 carbs.
i was pretty lucky, i bought a rotten donor car for £150 with the engine fitted so it came withy everything i needed
Same, well mine was about £250 but you can't complain for a whole car!
aye true, someones scrap is another mans treasure as they say lol
stickers being made by southie :)
these are the black and white versions though

recieved my brand new GM water pump today and it has ridges on both sides of the pump unlike the the one i have on atm

really cant be arsed taking the old one off as its a pain in the ass lol
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/7c6958e8.jpg
cant argue for £5 brand new aero wipers from ebay lol
Metal impellers on the pump i hope...
the qh ones (now genuine gm aftermarket) have metal impellors & they look awful....nasty pressed tin things.....
I spent ages trying to find a cast metal impeller pump for me let.. Couldn't.
they are all sadly long gone, as are the days of reconning your water pump at home with new bearings & seals....so its just fit a new pump every other year with the cambelt, just like vw do....
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/ce4caa3c.jpg
metal impellors :)
Mo, If i could just find a pump i'd buy 3 and just fix a new one each time.
Swedge, nice buy! Where did you find it?

Looking good buddy, like the stickers !
If you can find any more pumps the same i would get a few of them, as others have said they are really hard to come by now
this is where i got my pump from
http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/acatalog/Cavalier2_Cooling.html
it isnt listed anymore so i think i got the last one of that kind (original GM) the do have copies though which is R1160018N at the bottom of the page, i have been told that the N at the end of that number states that it is an afetermarket part not original GM
the part number for the original was a GM number im sure and didnt have a letter at the end
just had a look at thier pumps for the c20let and c20xe and they all have an N at the end so i assume they are not GM
Cheers dude, i'm not fussed who makes it, as long as it has metal impellers.
not too sure going by thier pics, try giving them a call
well the car needs a few cosmetic touched to it and the return of my ecu and all shall be done :)
now im not one for sitting about doing nothing and like to keep busy so i am the new owner of these parts

the whole lot is getting stripped anyway with the let pistons fitted, the cylinder look good, you can still see where the cylinders have been previously honed
this engine used to belong a long time ago to a guy called turnipheed on here, i didnt get it from him though its been around a few people since then lol
also how the hell do i get the valves out as my valve compressor is the g clamp type and i cant get into them lol
well got the block stripped today, dosnt look too bad tbh. all bearings are standard sizes so its not been reground at all
and as for the marked piston there are no marks on the cylinder bore at all but the side of the piston is marked so i think someone has actually put that piston in lol

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0093.jpg
Maybe a end of a plug broke off in the bore?
Ate could be I'll get a pic of the piston it's actually scored the side of it but not the actual cylinder
received my plastigauge today so can get the crank measured up
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0094.jpg
also re the marked piston

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0098.jpg
i reckon someone has put that piston in as there are no marks on the bore at all, it wont be getting used anyway as its being built into a c20let

nice one. i cant get near my project for doing other stuff grrrrr
Yeah I do tend to do that sometimes as well especially when I don't have a garage to work on the car in and it's cold lol
new parts today :)
received another xe block which will be drilled and tapped to convert to a let or will be sold on after its honed

anyone know the inside diameter of the oil return pipe on a c20let?
Pitting like that is caused by running with a blown head gasket/water in the bore
Cheers andy I have 2 heads to work from anyway so the valves will e replaced or new ones bought
nova_stee
08-03-12, 09:58 PM
I have a set of mint let pistons and rods hear pm me if you want them.
Also oil return is a 12bsp fitting as standard
well got some off the valves out today, looks like someones done a bit of porting/polishing

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/STA40731-1.jpg
thats the head that is in my car atm from a 20seh :)
Pitting in the valve face is ok,not ideal like but shouldnt affect performance.
Pitting on the valve stem,is not good and any like this should be replaced.Make sure the valve seats arent pitted also as if they are it wont seal properly.
Also get a valve and check for play in the guides, should only be a tiny amount,ie not like changing gear in a car!
yeah, everything will be all cleaned up and checked over
like i said ive to heads to work from so can use the better off the 2
needs a good cleanup first though so i can actually see everything lol

I had 2 heads for my 205 gti, cleaned one up,had it skimmed, found 3 sodding cracks from spark plug hole to valve seat.Already knew t'other one was scrap.
Check them over very carefully.Im just glad im ocd with engine parts and that i found it before i wasted £60 worth of gaskets and bolts.
not so good, yeah ill check them over closely no point doing all the work to them to find out thier paper weights
got the 2 heads stripped today, found a surprise though
a broken valve guide, lucky i have 16 new valve guides :)

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0164.jpg
now i took the pressure release valve out the oil pump to make sure it wasnt stuck or anything, it came out very easily so wasnt stuck or anything but does have some scores on it
its only on 1 side would this be ok to use or better with a replacement?
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0163.jpg
well managed to get the valves all cleaned up today
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0175.jpg
also squeezed the old oil out of both sets of lifters from both heads that was fun :(
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0174.jpg
also cleaned up my spare rods and pistons :) 3 spare c20xe and 2 c20let
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0173.jpg
i also took the backing plate off the oil pump and checked the tolerances with a feeler gauge and all is fine :)
what you up to then ? apart from stock piling xe/let engines ? lol
well ive nothing else to do as my megajolt ecu is currently in the U S of A lol
im only building 1 let engine out of all the parts i have/will get then probably build a c20xe/c20let out of the spares i have but the one i sell will be a rebuilt bottom end with a p&p head nothing else as itll just be throwing money away lol
so your eventually putting a let in then ?
eventually yeah but wont be any time soon lol need to have some fun in the carb'd engine first
well my ecu has been fixed from the guys in the usa who made it, turns out it was a knackered processor and oscilator or somehting lol
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/th_IMG_0200.jpg (http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/?action=view¤t=IMG_0200.mp4)
this is a short video i took after fitting the new waterpump, timing belt runs spot on now with no movement :)
engine is running without a ecu atm and has a solid 10 degrees ignition advance, a bit like limp mode where you kinda lose power and the ecu light comes on
thanks :) just need to get the car turned round so i can fix the outrigger thats a tad rusty
ecu should be here in about a week so itll be taxed at the end of the month then back on the road
im getting a slight misfire through the carbs on 3/4 - full throttle but thats probably just because its only running on the ford EDIS 10 degrees advance
just ordered an innovate wideband lamdba controller and gauge so will be able to check what the fuelling is like
i can also connect it up to the magajolt ecu and do some data logging so i can see what needs adjusted :)
just ordered some rosejoints to make up a gear linkage for someone on here as well and also ordered myself some since i sold mine with my last engine
postie turned up with some goodies today

Because my ecu isn't connected ATM it's only running off the ford edis

nice one
Decided to stick with the carbs an megajolt right now so not building a let just a c20xe do it'll only be a case of the quick switcheroo with the new engine
I have a choice between 2 gearboxes a f16cr or an f20
I know the differences but what do you recommend
tom reid
27-03-12, 09:08 PM
F16cr gets my vote.
Yeah I was leaning more towards that
16v Nova Kev
27-03-12, 09:41 PM
f16 all day f20s are pish. imo.
ecu came back today so straight onto the car with it, its only running the basemap atm the moment but everything seems to be fine :)

got the old exhaust off today and got the magnex system hung just waiting on my 2" connector coming as the flexi i previously used was way to long
also got the bung welded into the manifold just after the collector behing the sump so theres plenty room for the sensor for my wideband to sit
fitting the back box of the magnex is a pain is it not? lol i have it sitting on stands on the rear axel but theres not enough room to get the pipe over so im gonna have to move the stands to the sills :o
yep just needs a good clean up in the bay
also noticed today my wipers have gone a bit wonkey, the wiper on the right (as yourt looking at the car) struggles to wipe the screen without some encouragement lol
will have to have a look under the scuttle and see if its connecting right
i also chopped up the dash clock as well and got the wideband gauge sitting in its place
forgot i finished building my ramps today
makes working under the car 1000 times easier
i secretly tested them out on the mothers car first and gave it a good shake and they are sturdy enough haha
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0228.jpg

also my gauge
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/IMG_0227.jpg
did you get the wide band fitted after dude?
you had a prob welding the lamba boss didnt you? or am i thinking of some else f lol
aright yeah that was me lol, i ended up trimming the boss down so that the sensor part sticks further into the exhaust now
the boss is welded in buit the sensor isnt fitted yet as i need to do some marking up when my connector comes to join the magnex to the manifold
got my 2 bits of pipe to sleeve the 2 16v heads i have so they wont go porous
always better to do it just incase id say #

went to take mine off today to make myself one and cant get the bloody pin out to release it from the box :(
new outrigger made up and chassis rail straightend out as it was a tad bashed from people jacking it up there had to cut the old one one with part of the floor as there wasnt anything decent to weld to by the time i cut the outrigger out
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/e96a28fa.jpg
think my welders passed it now, had it 2 years and was bought second hand on here, the motor keeps pausing for a second now and again whjen feeding the wire through
time to upgrade to gas now i think
is it just when feeding wire normally or when actually welding?
more so when its welding but does do it a bit when no welding and just feeding
i thought at first it was just me being too close with the tip
ill need to do some experimnents with it lol
If its just when your welding then its the thermal cut, which means its at maximum capacity and is getting too hot.
yeah it could be its just a cheap welder nothing special so you could be right

Swedgy.... Couple of questions, what cutting compound did you use for the port/polishing and what burrs did you mainly use? :)
I never used any compounds when doing the head just iner grades of sandpaper :) I'll take some pics of my burrs when I get home (on night shift) I only really use 2 of them
I use them mostly for getting rid of casting marks and if I need to remove a fare bit material
Then onto the sanding drums/barrels
The the very fine emere papaer on one of the attatchments i have
The some. Scotchbrite attatchments
I'm just about to start doing 2 c20xe heads I'll get some pics

What about when you lapped the valves in? Did you no use lapping compound, I'm goin to start strippin my engine down this weekend hopefully.
Yeah I used valve grinding paste when lapping them in you can get it from most motor factors along with the stick for using it with
fuel pump moved today and new switches fitted for the ecu fan and fuel pump, the pump still runs off a relay though so still cuts out when keys off
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/579617_3605480373487_1167986524_3511120_1159597296 _n.jpg
Not been funny mate but that looks abysmal.Theyre not straight
Why do they need to be on switches if they run off the key?!
Yeah I kinda ****ed up the third one the 1st 2 were straight I want to be able to turn the pump off but have the keys tuned on for when I have the laptop connected up
Why turn the pump off? The carbs wont let the fuel in....
Because I'd rather have it turned of lol
spoiler arrived today just needs painted :)

Tidy looking nova mate :)
well yesterday consisted of removing my mates c20let from his astra, been off the road for a year for various reasons but its now in my shed on my engine stand ready to be stripped and rebuilt, its overfuelling but ive told him its because he is running vxr injectors and standard boost and standard ecu
ive told him to put standard inectors on it as the only mod is JE pistons
i look like a right wierdo in this picture lol and it had pissed down all day

Hey Swedge, nice build with the R1 carb setup. I am building myself a 20seh with R1 carbs too and was curious what size you have drilled the main jets to?
My jets are drilled out to 1.8mm standard needle height and 3.5 turns on the idle screw
Ive only had a quick blast in it and the afr gauge looked fine but one will tell
*Jurgen*
24-04-12, 02:56 PM
Cheers. Will set my carbs up like that and go see what the AFR meter will show ;)

Hows the car running bud? +rep btw
Still sat on my drive lol waiting on the end of the month to tax it :)
well tried to get the grub screws out so i can sleeve the heads and they rounded off
there in a pretty bad way so i didnt think they would come out, gonna take them to work with me and drill them out as my easy outs not getting them out either
might have to drill them a size bigger and tap them but thats no biggy
so i was gonna tax the car today but the linkage needed a slight adjustment so i went to put it on the ramps
snapped the clutch cable lol
replacement here tomorrow lol
my new engine stand arrived today just need some bolts for the block
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/45d9229b.jpg
also got some throttle cable parts to fix my bodge on the r1 carbs
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee127/swedge87/73d463ad.jpg
think i need a bigger shed or get rid of some engine parts lol
the engine on the stand is a mated c20let which is having the top end rebuilt and ported and polished if he pays me enough lol

Alright bud have you got her on the road yet??
will be when i move my **** and go get my clutch cable lol
just phoned the engineers too, my crank is fine it just needed a polish i also have a lightened and balanced flat type flywheel as well
fitted the new clutch cable, what a difference lol
i always thought it was justa heavy clutch but now its a breeze to pusah the pedal down lol
and yes it is connected to the gearbox for all the smart asses haha
fossit85
03-05-12, 07:28 AM
is it connected to the pedal lol
Haha I knew someone would say that lol
well was gonna take the car up to mates today to jiggle the exhaust around about to stop the rattle and i keep loosing reverse
on inspection the clamp keeps loosening on the selector rod :(
ive tightened it up as much as i can but it keeps loosening
the nuts starting to round off as well and it dosnt look like a standard 15mm nut as it has a fine thread on it
Take the bolt out, drill through it and use a bolt with a nut on instead, works better
if i take the nut off will the bolt come out the top? cant see me getting a drill in there easily lol
Undo the 4 bolts that hold the gearstick housing and take the whole lot out then
I ripped the nut off and then nut and bolted it... I made Adam too when his started to slip while he was on holiday down my way... Much better way.
Does the bolt just pull out the top once the nuts off?
If the nut comes off then the bolt will fall out, bolt should be going up from the bottom....
On mine the bolt goes though the top with the nut on the bottom
Hopefully the bolt will slide out when I remove the nut
It's a pain when trying I tighten it as I need to jam a spanner on the top and tighten the nut from the bottom
ok so i tightened it up again today without replacing the bolt and it seems fine so far, i think i was having trouble setting it up as when i was putting the drill bit in the linkage was turning back slightly
i got myself 2 helpers, 1 to hold the gearstick and 1 to stop the linkage turning back when the drill bit is in
tightened it up and it works perfect, where as before it was really stiff to get into reverse but now its a breeze
had my first wee proper run in it today and it just keeps pulling :), ive had an oil drip from where the crank breather joins the cam box, its dripped onto my exhaust wrap so im either gonna have to keep driving it till it burns off or just cut that part out of the wrap
its off up to my mates to get the exhaust played aroudn about as its sitting to close to the bit where the gearstick housing sticks out the bottom so rattle now and again which seriously does my head in on cars
all in all a productive day :)
it never rains but it bloody pours!!!!
Your car looks great, I love sports and sport influenced cars. Your build quality looks very good too....you can do one of my novas if your ever bored!
cheers marc, im pretty pissed off with the thing at the moment
my ecu has gone dead again, i think its getting too much power to it as i think its killed the processor and oscillator again which happened a few months ago
gonna have to check my alternator isnt overcharging
im suppossed to be goint to nats on the 18th but if i have to send my ecu back to the usa i doubt it will be back in time
the car still runs but its on a fixed 10 degrees advance on the ignition :(
times like these i think **** it am gonna sell it lol

06-05-12, 10:52 AM
just going on the fact swedge has had a bit trouble with his and also another guy i know with megajolt has had nothing but greif with his set up too. just my opinion.......
Keep battering on with it, be worth it in the end!
my ecu has been repaired before so unless its something else wrong with it im lost
im gonna change the alternator over just incase that is over charging, ill swap my earth point as well just incase
theres only an earth and power wire to connect up anyway as i have a pre-made loom
brent the guy who designed the ecu said depending what the problem is with the ecu he may send me a replacement ecu
the car still starts and drives just no ignition advance, only a static 10 degrees btdc which is what the ford edis module runs which megajolt uses

Can't you fit a 12V voltage regulator to it to stop the surge from the alternator they normally chuck out about 13.8V, when I worked on Citroen's we had to do this to stop them blowing headlight bulbs.
I'm gonna see what voltage the alternator is putting out hopefully an easy fix
well checked the alternator today, on idle it sits at 14.4 volts, give it a rev and it goes to 14.7
put the lights on heaters on and heated rear window and it drops to 12 volts on idle
that seem right yeah?
what is it at 1500rpm with full load, i.e fan, lights demister?
goes to about 13 maybe just over
Yeah that's perfect mate!
i can't imagine that anyone would market an automotive ecu that couldn't cope with the voltages you have mentioned.
Yeah I don't think that's the problem I thinks it's either my connection or a board fault

yeah i couldnt get the feckers out though lol thye will be getting changed anyway so i dont know why i taped them lol
Cut the bit on the inside off with a stanley knife and they'll pull out. Just avoids potentially having a paint line when they're replaced.
