WELL HERE I GO AGAIN!
ive had this nova since i turned 21 in 1999,bought it for £4200 with 62000 miles (the auto trader add from 1999 (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137081) ) as seen in the first picture, then in 2000 i bought new gm inner wings and front panel and done a slight rebuild on the front end. i used the car everyday till january the second 2004 when i bought my imola yellow audi s3:) , but sadly the nova was never used again:( .

the pictures that follow are from the rebuild in 2000 and as i want to use the car again this year i thought id share its history first. the car did belong to a former member of png and had an old skool sticker on the windscreen, sadly when the window was replaced the auto windscreen wa*k binned it!

hopefully i shall get pictures of its present condition up by the end of the week, she doesnt look as good now as she once did:cry:

lol your up way to late, it's em STAR SILVER lol, the clue is in the title:d

@ BURGO, simple plan is get all the bodywork sorted and brakes, then a full respray, no engine work as I don't have a budget for that, but i do have an early XE, it's been sat for 7 years so would need a rebuild if I was going to use that but probably keep it 1600:thumb:

bazil
16-02-10, 12:26 PM
The zender rear spoiler is the same as the one on that pink ex-Courtney nova. But it will never be attached to my car again!

Well got a tailgate from johnny-ayr at the weekend, tis good condition but white, and phoned the local panel stockists in paisley, they wanted £86 for a rear panel!! Eh GTF MATE!!

vaughanmc
16-02-10, 12:34 PM

Going to be a very interested restoration/rebuild mate :)

Doesn't look too bad, is it ?

well hopefully the front wont need too much work and ive got a full bootfloor so maybe a pair of quarters and a pair of sill with some patch work should do the trick oh and a rear panel too,

Edd the tailgate had that silver sound deadning stuff plastered all over it and inside the quarters too so when the moisture got in there it never left, hence the mega rust tailgate, ive got 3 good tailgate to choose from so thats no probs and the doors and bonnet are ok but the both front wings are scrap.

tis the attitude it needs:thumb: im ordering a new rear panel this week, i have a full new gm boot floor, but i think ill start by pulling of the quarters and fixing behind them, i dont want to remove to much in the one go and leave the shell weak. and the same as you mate, coilovers in turrets.

Cheers guys, it's a plus for me that I can weld, have the space, and time doesn't come into it. It might sound stoopid to some that I'm keeping this shell but I feel if I was to reshell it then it would only ever be a replica and not my GSI, anyway it will be good practice on a resto project cos as soon as I've done this I'm doing my GTE, hopefully a good update on Monday or possibly Sunday.

Cheers letnova I'll see you on Saturday .

It's been done before, you should see the guy on mig that's been building his nova for seven years, it's proper epic rebuild in the shell all new front end etc, I would stick up a link but there is a rule about promoting other clubs etc so don't want to upset the mods, but by f••k the guy is good.

That and the fact my brother and two mates are panel beaters are are old time trained, before all the fancy lazerline jigs came in it was all done by measurements, that's where I got the thing in my sig about the chassis measurments.

okay so ive been vewy lazy and done sod all to this so today straight of last nights nightshift i went up to the workshop and started mincing, it took me a bloody hour to get the o/s bottom door pin out and that was with heating it till it was red hot lol,
http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy181/Bazil_2468/gsi/d51eaf0a.jpg
then i couldnt get the other door of as my brothers vectra has a dead battery and both rear wheels seized solid and i wasnt for wasting my time on his motor.
http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy181/Bazil_2468/gsi/ab3ac977.jpg
so dash out then all the full loom out TOTALLY UNCUT!! including the 2 alarms and 2 imobilisers that are fitted to it, not much fun.
http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy181/Bazil_2468/gsi/0c866415.jpg
also started to remove the headlining but was getting a bit tired and didnt want to make a mistake and rip it.
i was supposed to go out tonight but spent to much time playing at novas i missed my reservations at dinner lol lol

Just read the whole thread. Its cool you still own both cars so many years on! Always good to see people putting a bit of effort in to restore a car, rather than just getting another shell. Top work!

bazil
06-07-10, 07:26 AM
Ive always had the view that if reshelled and used the other shells ID then it's always going to be a replica, and I can't use the original reg as that would be ringing, so after having them lying around for 11 and 6 years I'm in no rush to fix the shells, it more restoration than rebuild.

gary_126
20-07-10, 12:47 AM

Hope you've got another shell to cut rear hassis legs from, rear toe eye looks fooked lol

bazil
20-07-10, 01:42 AM
Yeah I've got a solid mk1 shell that was registered as scrap so I've removed the inner wings for my gte and the rest is pretty usable, I'm going rear coilovers and turretts anyway so the legs won't have to take springs,

I was wanting to much further along by this time but I'm not going to rush in just to get it finnished, I'll take my time and do it right.

bazil
31-07-10, 07:51 PM
Well after last nights shift I set about pulling out the engine today, first I had to move the brothers GSI vectra that got all 4 brakes seized:tard:
then working by myself got the engine out without breaking anything or spilling blood lol

on a bad note, when I was under the motor undoing the box bolts I got a serious shock about how bad it really is with rust,

The only things left on are the n/s door and roof lining and sunroof and hopfully get them off tomorrow.
As I've been up for 27.5 hours now I'm of to ma kip:)

both front wings ( don't have )
both rear quarters ( don't have )
rear panel ( have )
both rear chassis legs ( got in another shell )
inner rear arch repairs
battery tray repair
both sills ( have )
inner wing repairs
front panel ( don't have )
possable both front chassis legs ( have )
chassis legs under floorpan ( have in another shell )
full rear seat area and boot floor ( have )
forward floor pan repairs

With that amount of work to do I would seriously think twice about repairing it tbh

Will cost at least three times what a decent shell and paint would cost.

bazil
31-07-10, 09:31 PM
It's not an easy choice, it's all down to the saftey of the shell, my mate has been through thatcham courses for quality and such so I'll go on his word. The car is really special to me for various reasons but if it's unsafe to repair it then it'll have to go :(

Edd
31-07-10, 09:34 PM

Real shame the car needs so much work mate...I'm more of a replace than repair fella myself so I'd reshell it and see if theres anyway you can transfer the reg onto the new car to make it like a personal plate ? If you can do that, that is ?

bazil
02-08-10, 08:44 PM
I would need the CGG car to have an mot then put it on retension then transfer when the new car has a current mot,

I had my mate look at it, he reckons if the panels and chassis legs are properly replaced then it should be ok, but it's a big job to take on. I'll need about a million spot weld drill bits lol

Tommy, it was worth a try but I'm keeping all the parts ATM
:)

Edd, my mate had a quick look at it and said if I replace the panels with new ones and fitted them properly it should be ok, he said the problem would be if I just welded flat sheet metal everywhere then there would be little strength in the shell, so I still need a couple of hard to get bits before I can start but I'm hopefully going to get them soon.

thats an illegal thing to do and very pointless, the point of this project is to restore the shell to a high standard, a thing that many people don't or can't understand.

Anyone can reshell a car, it would take me only a weekend to build all my parts into a new shell and it would be running on the monday, but im not wanting to do that as i have 75% of the new panels i need and i see it as a challenge to restore this car.

bazil
01-09-10, 01:24 PM
Picking up some bits at the weekend, but unsure if I'm going to use them on this edd, rear wheelhousings, but on this I've seam welded the original ones and i've got bilstein coilovers that don't fit the standard arch shape so I'm probably going to turrett the rear,

Also going to be removing the rear floor on the donor shell as it's a guide for doing this one so all I need to do is get more spot weld drills lol

I'm still waiting on my quarter panels tho, they might not arrive till November lol but I'm not needing those ATM anyway, they will be the last things to fit along with the rear panel, only a weekend to do those, but I need to do the chassis legs and floor first and take my time,

Did you have to do any welding whilst the engine was out, and did you spray or paint it silver?

Looks niceeeeee.............

if you look a few pages back you'll see it needs mega welding now lol, and it was star silver from the factory :)

Also a wee update

I saw this for sale and had to get it, those of you who have read the thread will know that I don't want a big block, I always wanted a turbo'd 1600 so thanks to Compton, bazil is well chuffed,

thanks for the coments guys

gary i was looking for a kingdom front bumper lol

i'll probably cut into the front valance to save me from cutting the bumper, maybe just open up the back of the lowest scoop on the gsi bumper as that would be roughly where the cooler would sit but defo no hanging out cooler, might also look into a floor mount pedal box to remove the servo and mastercylinder to give space for a charge cooler? but that is waaayyyyyyyyy down the line

ive also noticed im almost ahead of "The Airfix" nova on mig for the amount of panels being replaced lol

cheers mate, i might get a second engine to put it on and work away at a special build on its own block, proper job type build rather than gaskets and spacer plates etc

Ahhhh my old turbo kit lol

Make sure you use it, someone needs too lol
Have you got the headgasket spacer ? You'll need that.

When's all the cutting/welding starting then ?

Edd
16-09-10, 11:00 AM
Also get a twin pass intercooler, medium size no need for front panel cutting then, CraigGreen posted up a pic of his on a Gsi, fits lovely and looks factory font on as well

bazil
16-09-10, 11:03 AM
I've not got the spacer yet, it was posted seperate from the fanymould so it didn't get damaged.

The cutting won't start till I have every last panel I need, I'm heading to englandshire on Monday to pick up a pair of quarter panels :)

Edd
16-09-10, 11:08 AM
So once you have the quarters it's time to turn the grinder on ? lol

Not quite Edd lol still need to get a bettery tray and outer/inner rear arch repair sections and a gm front panel, once I have all the parts I'll lay them out and probably freak out at the size of the task ahead

southie, due to my shift pattern it'll probably be only 1 weekend in every 3 I could get a run at doing work on it, that's why I want every part I need so when I do get some time to work on it i'm not held back by lack of parts :)

that looks like an FSE power boost valve to me... I would avoid, if that thing decides to run lean at the wrong time it could nuke your engine.

bazil
16-09-10, 04:54 PM
I've seen alot of folk saying the FSE is pants, in mikes turbo guide he uses a rising rate one, in previous old threads I've seen cream XE injectors used, so I'll be doing plenty of research before even building the engine, also looking at megasquirt and megajolt systems too, certainly the standalone looks a much better choice.

Standalone would indeed be like night and day vs standard management 'fooled' into thinking it's running something different, it's also a night and day cost though lol

Edd

Mike never actually got his running tho

When Courtenay converted the e16's the set the fuel pressure rather than having a rising rate one, Craig could tell you what it is I would think.

Edd
16-09-10, 05:01 PM
Just to add the cheapest option would be to fit a presssure switch to sort the fueling, bout £10.

This is what I'll be doing with my 1300 turbo engine.

Depends how fussy you are about doing it properly, imo a pressure switch to tell the ecu to go into cold run mode is absolutely shocking as a product to be sold to the public, and marginally acceptable as a home bodge.

Where did you get the chassis leg from Bazil ?

bazil
24-09-10, 05:07 PM
I'm pretty sure you can guess lol

thing is I'm going to have to remove the front part from the underfloor part as the forward section is standard nova spec and I have the forward section for the 1.6 with the extra internal plate,

Nothing is ever simple.

If you loop it into the CTS wiring yeah, or on the E16SE you wire it into the TPS so it tricks the ECU into full throttle map when it comes on boost. Obv the fuelling still enrichens via the AFM as that opens anyway. Not to mention the rising rate reg which is where the bulk of the fuelling comes from.

It's merely how Courtenay have done it. If you have driven one of their 1600 turbo's back to back with a miserable std 1600 8v like I have you'd know it is very effective.

Just read the whole thread mate. Loving the idea of 1600 turbo.
There's some serious amount of rot on your gsi there mate, I scrapped my gsi 2 years ago which was no where near as bad as that!! I was very reluctant to scrap it as it was a real gsi and had many a good time in it like yourself, but when I was offered a near mint nova for £250 I had to take it. My gsi will live on, just in parts for my new 1 lol. Will look forward to more updates from you, looks like you've got some good panels to repair it so good luck.

Thanks ben, the project is in limbo ATM as I need to lay a new concrete floor in the shed before I start hacking it to bits lol.
That and it's to cold and wet :(
I want the bodywork completed and painted before the end of next summer so it's not forgot about just not a priority ATM
