Since I sold the Nova Sport shell I decided to make something a wee bit different using some of the Nova Sport bits
Picked up this wee shell from Jamie (G111MDS) off here last night, hope he doesn't mind me using his pictures from his forsale thread...
Going to get the wee bits welded that need done, 2/3 nights work at the most
Needs behind the back shocks at either sides patched, a wee patch on the back panel and a wee hole welded on the drivers door and I'm going to get back arches put on it as well
Heres some pictures and a rough spec after them:

Going to be rebuilding and using my old Nova Sport 1300 8v engine and putting the Sport 40's and Irmscher manifold on it - Probably upgrade the Cam and fire a 4-branch on there as well
It'll also have early bumpers on it, GTE spoiler, RFX's in 14" or 15" if I can source them and a full Nova Sport interior
Also hoping to get some Bilsteins for it as well
Hopefully some updates soon
Cheers, Vaughan

so will look like a sport but you wont be afraid to play about because its not genuine? sounds good to me :D
vaughanmc
21-11-09, 04:20 PM
Forgot to say it'll be painted Glacier White as well :thumb:
Even if it was a proper Sport it would be used and abused lol
Rally car for the road! Looks a good base shell vaughan good luck

21-11-09, 04:22 PM
Something like that Leeboo, a far better shell than the Sport anyway...

looks like a solid little car but there is a certain feeling you get when driving a genuine shell and 10L FTW

Not making it into a Sport replica though :) Just a nice useable white Nova with some Sport parts :thumb:

nice shell chum
i think you should of kept the sport shell :(
vaughanmc
21-11-09, 04:48 PM
I don't - This is a far better idea and much better use of my money :)
I'll get another Sport sometime

Good luck with the project! Really reasonable shell and will make a good base for your plans. Lack of space together with a new toy meant I couldn't keep hold of it. Glad to see its gone to someone who will rebuild and get some use from it.

good! took some pictures of it being loaded on to the trailer. not the best being that it was dark, but i'll post them up.
Also have a number of pics which i can email you including from the day i picked it up back in 2007.

Looks a good project so far.
I think its just as well you didnt keep the nova sport.
Sports deserve to be restored %100 properly, and if your not up for it then its better for it to go to someone who is willing to treat it he way it should be treat.
anyway look forward to seeing some progress on this.

Couldn't afford to put all that money into the shell alone whereas with this I can put a wee bit into the shell and the rest on suspension and the engine :)
IMO a Sport should be driven and not hidden away...That's what I'd have done with it
Cant believe there still going on about the sport lol
Still think do a rep - considering how cheap the graphics are.
Fair enough its still a replica, but its going white? Its a mk1? Why not have Polar White? Its a better colour anyway.
Theres no shame in having a replica, how many GSi reps are on here! It seems daft considering how anal you were about wanting a sport, and then you get the chance to build a good one, and your going to make it look odd, just because you don't want a replica???!
Odd to me, clean shell tho!
95.8 capital fm... that down here :) were the car origionally from?
And nice one mate look forward to this.. :)
Looks a better shell to start from IMO, battery tray didn't look too good on that sport shell.
Replica ftw.
Do you not like the idea of the Sport decals ?
vaughanmc
21-11-09, 10:04 PM
I absolutely love the Sport decals but as it's such a rare car I don't think it's right that I should copy or try and make another one...I'd rather leave that to the boys with the real Sport's
I'll wait and see - Polar White might still be on the cards but it's a G plate shell
get a private plate of an older age
vaughanmc
21-11-09, 10:31 PM
I'll wait and see what happens, I know it's going to be Sport powered with a Sport interior :)
I'll wait and see - Polar White might still be on the cards but it's a G plate shell
So, i'd do a sport rep on a L plate shell.
The "look" is what your after, as you say, it won't be concours, but whilst your there you may as well have the decals put on for the sake of £200. Then live in the knowledge your £2-3k basher won't matter if it starts to go crusty etc, because its not an original ;)

Lets waste a boad of band width on a joker thread aye?
Lets waste a boad of band width on a joker thread aye?
^^^what kind of comment is that ?! COMPLETE IDIOT.
you seem to be a little pi$$ed off bout Vaughan splitting up the sport.
at the end of the day he bought it so is entitled to do what he likes with it.
if you cared so much for it why sell it in the first place ??
from the pics the Sport shell looked ready for the crusher anyway.
To me a Sport is,
Polar white paint, Decals, flashes on front bumper, 40's, yellow/brown check interior.
Why spend all the time, effort and money on repairing a shell thats too far gone just to say its a Sport when the look can be earsier and cheaper ??
WAAAYYY too many people bitchin bout Sport's laterly.
IMO a different shell was the best option.
Still reckon that the decals should go on tho. :thumb:
Good luck with the rest of the project Vaughan.
Edd
completely agree with Edd!
this should be good mate i will definatly keep an eye on this one! good luck mate :thumb:
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 09:52 AM
Aye as you said Edd, it was my Sport to do what I wanted with it - If the shell was better nick I'd have kept it but the option I chose was the best one for me to get full use out the 'Sport'
I'll work away at this one and see what I end up with - Definately going Sport based...Still no 100% on the decals
I will be following this project, nice to see more 8v small blocks!

22-11-09, 10:39 AM
ive got a mk1 SR in glacier white, (agreed polar white is better!) and a 1400 on 40s (WIP), i have considered trying to get my hands on a set of sport decals but dont think i would, SR is limited edition enough for me, id rather wait to get a real one. Does anyone know if the sport airbox would be alright on a 1400? and can you still get the filters for them?

I will be following this project, nice to see more 8v small blocks!
ive had so many people say 'are you dropping a red top in it mate?' and they always seem shocked when i say nah, just a 1400 8v... lightness of the small block all the way!
/\ that coment was to vaughan lol
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 11:54 AM
What comment ? lol
looks a good shell to start with mate going be nice what your doing with it.
imo the decals need fitting mate
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 11:57 AM
Nope it's not a thing I'd like to do - I'd put a GSi kit on my red one but I wouldn't badge it as a GSi...
Same with this - It'll be white with the early bumpers white flashes round the lights and maybe the matt black sills but don't think I'll put Sport decals on it as it's no a Sport...
each to there own will still look good i fitted a gsi kit to mine and im awaiting the badges, still yours will still look good without the decals tho
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 12:01 PM
As good as the Sport decals look, this isn't a Sport
I like a plain white early Nova as much as a Sport like Matt's SKI etc...
Here's a picture of what I'm kinda aiming for - Thinking about the Cibies for the front as well - Old skool picture sent to me by Rich (Novasport)

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/NovaSport335.jpg
Plain white one ? :)
nope, sport all the way:p
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 12:06 PM
Definately :) But I'm no building a Sport any more...
lol its a nice car and i think it will look cool plain white but with sport styling so go for it mate :thumb:
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 12:09 PM
I'll wait and see - The concrete plans are White, 1300 T40 8v, Sport interior
Whatever else will just happen as it happens lol Same as I done with the red Nova
there's no rule saying you have to have a Sport to have the decals on.
if you like them do it.
im thinking that after i finish my SR off i will build a wide arch Sport replica, as i have lots of brown interior parts/bumpers etc and that will have the decals on.
Edd.
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 12:13 PM
I'll wait and see - Just not a fan of look-a-likes that much
there's no rule saying you have to have a Sport to have the decals on.
if you like them do it.
Too True.
Looks a pretty clean shell there. I dont think there is anything wrong with adding the graphics etc to a non Sport shell, it's not like your going to claim it is a Sport.
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 12:36 PM
Just don't want to put Sport stickers on something that isn't a Sport

22-11-09, 01:29 PM
that plain white one with the spots looks ace, thats the kinda look i'd go for :thumb:
I really don't get all this sport hype. It's a nova ffs.
Originally the sports were a base model with stuff bolted on in the factory. So i really do not see the harm in making a replica, it's exactly the same process as GM making an original one.

wow, just read this thread,so some one has a rust sport, and gets offered a really good clean shell, personally i feel its a no brainer, however the temption to do number swap would of won over for me,
before i annoy every one,i do agree that the sport is a rare car,and i personally hide rare cars away and enjoy them when the weather extreamly good, but i agree with the veiw a cars there to be driven.
accross here in the isle of man theres a nova sport, which get rallied, and has done for last ten years,at the end of the day thats what they were made for.
the red shell looks extreamly good
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 03:23 PM
I would have done a number swap but it's not worth it if you get caught because it's illegal and you could end up losing everything
I reckon I've done the best and of course the most legal thing by just getting rid of the shell and making my own Nova using some of the Sport bits
They should be used and abused - Fair enough not the salt but if it's your only car then needs must
I'd rather use a Nova in the winter than go on a bus or bike it everywhere

Going to go down this week and get the back end up in the air and get it ready for the behind the back shocks and the back panel to be welded
Hopefully that won't take long :) That should be the shell all welded and hopefully no need to see a welder ever again
Looking forward to seeing this about.

The plain white rally look is good, thats how my old Sport looked...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/IMAGE_039.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/IMAGE_036.jpg
I just had a bonnet flash which is in 80's Dealer Sport colours, there is nothing Sport replica about that its just the colours they used then. I could have put the stripes on both doors like a Manta 400 but it does not make it a 400 replica.
The base model look turbo, (C20 TBO is it?) looks good but you know its not a Sport. It uses the later yellow, red & blue Dealer Sport colours, why not go for them to make it different, especially with the Glacier white.
But, why not go for Polar? You say its a G reg, but what does it matter the car is supposed to be red and a 1.2 anyway!
I think I would leave the car red TBH as its a complete ball ache swapping the colours.
Keep it red, badge it as an Opel and sticker it up as a Corsa A Sprint ;)
vaughanmc
22-11-09, 05:19 PM
I'm toying with the idea of red and the idea of Jon Walsh's, Dec's old Nova and the F reg one thats been all diferent colours springs to mind...
Really not sure - I want to keep the old style front end...

red would be nice Vaughan, mk1 sr bumper and grill but with no vynal. Really nice look. That said, the white would also look good. decisions, decisions!

Karl Rowntree's is giving me ideas and I could easily put my Speedlines on it (not sure when the pictures of his with the Speedlines were taken) but it's really making me think
Inside this shell is spot on and would need NO paint as with the engine bay...Front panel might get touched up but that wouldn't be seen
Hmm...My Dad thinks red as well...Really not sure

22-11-09, 05:26 PM
Et voila, this but red...

vaughanmc
22-11-09, 05:28 PM
Hmm...Really not sure lol
It's tough - I thought picking a colour would be easy
Well I'd like it red as white would be a pain to change all the V5 and do all the car but whether to late SR or early SR it or even GTE it...
Im trying to decide on a colour to paint my shell as i have someone to paint it once ive finished prepping it but i just can't stick with one colour, it's changing every day lol

22-11-09, 05:47 PM
I shouldn't have started to look through my Nova picture folder - Seen Jon Walsh's Nova and though...Hmm, tidy! lol
g111mds
22-11-09, 06:00 PM
could also build it in the existing colour first and then see what it looks like?
Couple of pictures of it being collected:

Paint it brown to match the interior, different wheels from all the rest..
Sport bits would be out of place with red paint IMO
Sport bits would be out of place with red paint IMO
How ? a 1.3 engine doesnt look right if its in a red car ? sport interior wont look good cos the cars red ??
Vaunghan said it was a Sport based project so that would meen White paint.
Either would look good tho.

Be either white or red - More drawn to the White as I want it to resemble a Sport...

Very tidy shell Vaughan by the looks of it. Do a red sport replica with still all graphics as a white sport and bumper flashes in red, also with a set of tidy black 5 spoke compomotives would look cracking IMO.
Good luck with the build and glad you've decided to keep the project alive in someway :)
Well I'd like it red as white would be a pain to change all the V5 and do all the car but whether to late SR or early SR it or even GTE it...
LOL you make me laugh.
Get V5, in Vehicle Data, Colour - hand write White, send to DVLA, get V5 back as White.
Woah what a pain.
Sport it, or Karl's is nice, but to do similar makes it a replica

Passenger side welded up and sealed:

Made a start on the back arches as well - Passenger side:

Drivers side still to do then some filler is needed to smooth it all up :thumb:

looking spot on. i think you should do it red.thats my 2p worth
Nice work, did you do the arches?
vaughanmc
24-11-09, 09:25 PM
Nope I didn't - My mate's Dad did the welding for me...I just cleaned and prepared the metal on the inner arches
Didn't take long to do either :)
I need to tackle mine and i've never done bodywork welding on that scale before so slightly nervous about it lol

24-11-09, 09:27 PM
I can't weld at all and don't want to mess it up on the car but we're doing it at college in the next couple of months so that'll build up my skills and confidence

Right first off dude, the new shell looks ace, good start for a good project.
Now here is my 2p's worth, i say if you have every thing to make it a sport "rep" then do a "rep".......................BUT
With a twist!
Paint it BLACK and put the decals on, now this would make it like an evil sport and look very good IMO :thumb: :d

Black with all the Sport decals looks amazing. There's no rush to decide on colours, obviously you have to be 100% sure on which colour you want before it's painted, it's your car at the end of the day. I'm not a big fan of red cars but it is one of the best colours IMO when its fresh and the paint is mint.

Yes mate if you make the car black and the decals the standard colours.
Heres a fresh pic if you want:

Aye it was a good find - I'd looked at it for a while but never thought anything of it
Needs very minimal work which is about complete already - Possibly going down the night to work on it and get the welding done and by with
Just need to try and sell some more stuff to fund it to save dipping into other cash lol
Paint it Polar white, fit all those Sport bits and DEFINATELY fit those funky Sport decals. You know you want to! No point having all those bits and not doing a full on replica. Who cares if it's not genuine or the right year? It's just a Nova shell at the end of the day, they're all identical!
Progress is looking good anyway fella :thumb:

All the welding is now done - Back panel is done, 2 back arches, 2 bits behind the back shocks
Just need to fill the arch joins and make it all look uniform then get it ready for paint
Keep thinking about red to save painting the front panel and engine bay as there absolutely spotless as it the inside...
Might build it up red 1st then paint it white in the future

Still working away dressing up the back arches to get them ready for a coat of primer so there about ready for paint
Going to try and get the 1300 8v engine running with a standard carb I think 1st to make sure it runs then give it a mini-rebuild - Not going mega mega spec with this engine but I'll likely upgrade the cam and stick a full Eurorallye exhaust system on it with a 4-branch then paint it up with a red block and silver head etc and maybe try and source an Irmscher cam cover for it
Then the 40's will be next for a wee rebuild and service then fire them on to get it running with them :thumb:
I'll get some pics of the progress during the week
Thinking about body-colour underneath as well as this'll be a good weather/show car :)
this needs loads more pics vaughan ive got a feeling its gonna be up there with the greats :thumb:

I'll likely be in one day during the week - I'll try and find my digital camera and get pictures of the shells condition etc
Just taking my time with it now trying to make as little mistakes as possible - Learning something new every time I work on it :)
Should be nice once its done Vaughan.
But you always say a car is made to be abused...
Thinking about body-colour underneath as well as this'll be a good weather/show car :)
I personally wouldn't too carried away with detail underneath, just redo rust protection well and waxoyl insides of chassis legs? You want to be able to give it the odd good hard staging without worrying about chipping paint off your floorpan!
vaughanmc
06-12-09, 05:51 PM
Just a thing I've always liked is the body colour underside - It'll be used definately but not so much abused

Nah Stealths still look good on cars! Mk3 Astras, Cavaliers and the small amount of Nova's I've seen them on
How is it a mis-mash of styles ?
Plenty of Stealths about these shores, mostly seen on mark 3 Cavalier SRi replicas!
Get it painted white as a Sport replica, you can't go wrong.

Got my panels sorted out for this and there going into college with me on Monday so I can start to prep them
Changing the doors over as the passenger side is full of wee dents and the drivers door has a wee pin hole at the bottom corner - Swapping them for 2 clean doors and going to delock them and fit remote central locking
Swapping the boot over as it has a dent on it right down the middle as if the car has reversed into a lamp-post or something and I'm putting on an early Mk1 tailgate and it's going to be smoothed as well
Started the task of undersealing as well, cleaned up any bits that looked bad (not many) and made a start with that - Need to spend a lot more time on it which will be next week and I'll just crack on with it
Had to move it as well as my mate who I share the lockup with is getting a Nova GTE track prepared car - Meant to have 140 BHP 1600 8v, Leda suspension etc

Think you might need a plough or similar to pull it off.

vaughanmc
15-01-10, 04:36 PM
I think it will go together - Andy's is pretty similar and his pulls off grey Speedlines
We all know alloy wheels are much much nicer in silver so I think it will work
I might look into a Snowplough for it as well just to make it look lower and meaner at the front
Have a look at Andy's XE and get back to me :)

It'll get there mate - Got the panels into the college today and hopefully shoot some primer either tomorrow or Wed then get the panels back home sometime next week as I want to let them dry/cure then get the bumpers and bonnet done so that's all the panel work done and the whole shell can be painted at once so it's all the same colour :)
good plan bud, get some pics

Will do I'll take some tomorrow - The early boot I'm using is in a wee bit of a mess, must be about 4 layers of paint on it lol Plus Hammerite on the back side
Hopefully a lot of attention to detail will sort that out also hoping to get the locks and wiper hole flushed off tomorrow as well :)

Humm, with Andy doing his in upol gray, and you Vaughan doing yours in Volvo grew, I'm thinking is it worth getting my mk1 bumpers done while it's in the body shop?.?.?
Anyone got any pics of the Volvo gray, and any code info on both paints, just in case i need them for the sprayer.

I would get them painted mate, saves time bumper gelling them to keep them fresh looking
Got some pics of what I've been up to on this project - Only if my phone would work...

OK some bodyshop/College pictures of what's been happening to the Mk1 - Early bootlid all sanded down. Down through black Hammerite, green, red then the original China Blue colour
Got a few wee dents over it and some pinholes of rot along the bottom but we're going to lead fill them so it's good metal going back in and not cataloy - Going to be plugging the lock, wiper and washer holes with lead as well:

Some filler work but not finished yet:

Drivers door sanded down to bare metal front and back ready for lead filling to delock them:

Proper way to delock doors - Going to use a wee bit of stopper tomorrow to fill it a wee bit and crack on with the passenger door then hopefully in the afternoon we'll shoot some primer :)
Cheers, Vaughan

Quite like the look of the GSi spoiler on the early boot on a Mk1 :)
Iain's Sport, Karl Rowntree's Nova
Keith's and Nick Jackson's old Nova have the early boot with GSi spoiler as well
Got a wrap around here as well but GSi will be smarter
Do you not need to weld in the blanking plates if you're lead filling?

Nope the lead filling joins the back piece onto the door itself - It's pretty much like soldering
Mind that lead doesn't sag. That's one of the reasons that modern bodyfillers were invented...
I agree with your methods, in theory. Who's doing the lead loading mate?

College Lecturer is doing the lead loading for me :) He said that's the best and only way to do it
Cool. job for a pro, no question.

Definately, I had a shot at soldering wires and it didn't quite go to plan
Never mind using Oxy Acetylene and a bar of Lead lol
Definately looks good and he assures me it won't crack or whatever :) WIN

I know you like comments to your threads good or bad? So:
1.Your lead loading larger holes on the tailgate but still skimped areas with filler? Waste of lead IMO.
2. Thought this was staying all Mk1? A Mk2 spoiler on a Mk1 fronted car is all wrong IMO.
Other than that kidda good work...

Cheers fella - Nice to hear/read something constructive from you for a change :)
1. Lead loading was for the locks and washer holes so they don't crack but overall the boot is full of wee minor ripples and dents and it would be pointless lead loading them...
2. Karl Rowntree's Nova looks awsome as a Mk1 with a GSi spoiler...So why can't mine
Cheers though :thumb:
