18-06-10, 07:18 AM
lol £15/£20 probably then ?
Made such a difference - Rubbed down the rear ARB as well and it came up great too
Back beam is taking a bit more work but it gets a bit more abuse lol I'll get there though
Even up early today so I can get paint and get cracking! Just need to actually wait on the shops opening lol

lol lets meet half way £17.50, that'll be fine.
I've been up since 5am mate, couldn't even sleep.
They normally look a lot more crappy than they really are so they clean really well most of the time.
Get some pics up when painted (when the shops have opened ;) )

18-06-10, 07:33 AM
Will do mate - Hopefully paint up the front 2 tiebars, rear ARB, back axel and maybe the fuel tank today
Then I'll need to wait and save up a wee bit and buy some new polybushes for the front tiebars and rear axel then fit them up and get the shell rolling again :)
Getting there slowly but surely I think lol
all progress the same mate.
ill get pics of that tailgate today for you

Calipers still to be painted
Koni Adjustable shocks all round (Came up cheap and seem to be decent enough) Got some -40mm springs there as well but might go -60mm but I don't want the car dragging it's a*se along the ground like the Mk2 lol
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Parts2.jpg
Might have another update at the weekend but we'll see how it goes
Cheers, Vaughan
Mate those Koni's are going to be very stiff and a very harsh ride
vaughanmc
25-07-10, 05:49 PM
I know the car they came off was very stiff but it's not for a daily driver so it should be allright lol

Another wee update that I forgot about - Got these off Joe Richardson from the PNG
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/ClearIndicators.jpg
2 good nick used clear indicators and what appears to be brand new clear side repeaters with bulbs
Seeing your reply on Iain's thread.
If your keeping the car long term and doing lots of work. Use the 3m rubberised sealant on the under sides. Then paint it. Its much better and worth the money.

26-07-10, 06:28 AM

Mind if i ask how much you got it ?
Loving the yellow running gear aswell.

The yellow back arch is some primer we done my mates 1600 GTE track Nova with before paint and we tried it on one of my back arches to see how they looked (after being replaced) They look and feel not too bad, a wee bit high in places but I'll sort them out :)
Fearless brace was a steal IMO, PM me if your interested :) The guy knew what he had but didn't put the title properly hence me being the one and only bidder :thumb:
Glad you like the wee yellow bits and pieces
Cheers for the comments

Spent a couple of nights cleaning up my Sport 40's and Irmscher inlet manifold
That's how they started in the pics above - Not too dirty but quite 'old' and stained looking
So out with some thinners and a paintbrush and some elbow grease I got them looking like so; Irmscher Inlet:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Image0029Medium.jpg
Both 40's:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Image0030Medium.jpg
Not going to be painting them as they were never painted originally I don't think so just wanting them to look as original as possible
Can't wait to get them rebuilt and fitted!

As nice as they look that brace is going to do fook all IMO, rear brace is only worth having if it bolts/welded in to the turret.
Sell it on at a profit and put the money towards something useful IMO mate
vaughanmc

Only had about an hour or so to work on the car today so concentrated on the bit that needed the most work - The back arches!
Rubbed them down with the DA until I got them as even as I could and then chapped down the various high bits and put a skim of cataloy on each arch
Looks quite bodgey if I say so myself but it's not holding the car together it's just to even it out and make it look nice and most of it will end up on the floor anyway lol
Here's some quick pictures:

Cheers mate, it's too good a shell to see not being used!
Spent a wee while tidying up the engine bay during the week, came up well
Needs a good clean and polish though
vaughanmc
26-08-10, 06:49 PM
Nah mate not took any - Been more concentrating on the orange Nova getting it ready for the track day on Sunday at Kames :)
your one be running simular(sp) power?
vaughanmc
26-08-10, 06:51 PM
Probably not mate as the engine in this Nova is just a standard 1400 SR lump with the 40's and it'll have a 4 branch...Doesn't look like a big cam or anything
The engine in the orange Nova is again a 1400 SR with a ported head, Piper Cam, Weber competition 40's, 4 branch...It goes like f*ck lol
ill need to fire down sumtime any see it go

28-08-10, 08:33 PM
Need to source some wee bits 1st mate - Emailed Colin Smith about some bits and pieces for the engine so it can be fired up to make sure it's OK then going to try the 40's etc
Just going to build it up bit by bit and not weigh myself down with thinking I've still the whole car to do
Made a start joining a 1400 SR coil and dizzy with loom onto the original 1.0 Nova loom and I'm going to be using the original 1.0 fuel tank and hopefully running it with NO fuel return (That's the way the orange Nova is setup as well and runs spot on)
If Colin replys to my email with a price for the stuff I need I'll get that and maybe the engine will be firing up in a week or two...
...Maybe lol

Update :)
Lost the notion for the Mk1 a few weeks ago but managed to get some back and started to crack on so 1st things 1st;
Trial fit of the Irmscher Cam Cover, will look good once its fitted and once the 40's are fitted etc:

Good work Vaughan. That Irmscher rocker cover really does need a nice polished metal oil filler cap to finish off the look.
Great work on the rear arches :thumb:
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:33 PM
Cheers matey :) Might see about a polished cap for it but wanted to keep all the caps yellow :) To match the brake scheme etc, we'll see though
I hope the arches turn out OK when there into primer...I know ripples in the filler can't be helped but just hope they look OK when there done lol I'm worried haha
Definately a polished cap vaughan, nice to hear its not for sale:)
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:43 PM
I'll try and source one and see how it looks lol Nothing else in the engine bay will be as 'bling' though...Not my cup of tea that shiney stuff
Might as well finish it now like...I've came this far and collected some cool stuff for it
nor me,but i just feel it will compliment the rocker cover perfectly though if that makes sense,as the polished caps were on the older engines originally,so it will be in keeping with the rest of the engine
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:46 PM
That's true mate, I'll see what I can do lol
Found an old metal timing belt cover, must be from the old Sport engine! Never seen one of those before either, they must be from the early Nova's as well ?
I cant say i ever recall seeing one of those, fire a pic up would you so we can see??
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:48 PM
I just put it back in the cupboard down at the lockup...Didn't think anything of it as the 1400 engine in this car has a brand new GM timing belt cover on it :)

Mate, if you aren't in any rush to get it finished then I'd really get the bodywork straight as poss. I had so many ripples on my bodywork that it was a nightmare to get them out (so I was told) and you will notice them everytime you look at it.
You'll be able to tell if it's straight when it's in primer.
I know what you're saying about the caps but the polished cap looks good and will match the Irmscher writing, plus it just looks a tad more retro-cool in my eyes. I've got my one off the 1.2 in a cupboard. Will be putting that to good use when the LET goes in :d
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:53 PM
I'll try and get it as best I can - Doing it all myself though so it's only me to blame if it looks s*it! Pointless sending it away to someone when I have the basic knowledge etc and can do it myself
Best way to learn too :)
Cant believe youve ruined a pair of LXI alloys
vaughanmc
31-08-10, 07:55 PM

Cheers mate - There starting to feel good as well...Nothing worse than lumpy bumpy arches!
yea you dont want it looking sh*t when its in paint but you have done a good job there!! when are you hoping to get it all finished painted up by??
vaughanmc

Cheers for the arch comments, I know this might sound perverted but there starting to feel good as well :)
I'd LOVE the car to be done and complete for Billing 2011 but I can't see that happening as my K reg Nova is coming off the road for good and I need to get another daily and pay insurance etc
We'll see what happens though :)
Arches look good mate
What's up with the k reg ? Surely you could use that as a daily still ?

Needs a wee bit of welding mate and some mechanical bits and bobs as well...It's at that stage where it needs a lot of work and atm I don't have enough money to spend on it so I'm going to store it away and leave it and maybe one year I'll bring it back out and give it a wee rebuild...
Want the MK1 done though and a sound daily

I was in at the lockup during the week for a wee while - Got the welds on the arch lips buffed down flat and got the arch lip, sill and back arch (under the bumper) into Poly - No pictures though but today I was in and got all the poly rubbed and it's starting to take shape, looks nice and clean now:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP226.jpg
Gave it a slight flat with 180 and stuck some guide coat on it:

I'd like to hope so but I'm in no real rush! Going to be pricing up 2L of 2K Flame Red today hopefully then I'll really get the finger out
Think it'll draw or be wanting a crowd ? lol
well i'll certainly be straight over to see it,i like your ideas and that youve got the whole motorsport thing going on with it
vaughanmc
18-09-10, 11:49 AM
Well, hopefully it's there mate, I'd love it to be lol :thumb:
I can't really say that I've got my 'ideal/perfect' Nova - I just buy what I want/like and try to make something out of it - Not going to be everyones taste (Same as my Mk2) but I'm not doing it for the crowd like some folk, I'm doing it for me
Glad you like it so far though mate
im the same,i dont car what anyone thinks of mine,im building it to impress only myself.I have similar sort of plans for mine, stripped caged buckets and the rally feel to it,its a d reg antibes btw.Ive been offered a genuine sport engine with all webers, manifold, airbox the lot for £350,im very tempted but bear in mind ive just blown up a 20xe in it so im frightened it wont be quick enough for me.That said the xe was quick in a straight line but terrible on corners, which imo ruins the whole "nova" experience for me,but i feel with that 1300 or a 1600gte on 40's it will be adequately quick but will handle so much better, which is what i want as theres some awesome roads around here.Sorry if im rambling in your thread lol
vaughanmc
18-09-10, 11:58 AM
Nah keep it lit mate! Get the Sport engine, 40's etc etc etc and either use them or store them! Will be worth a fortune in years to come when folk are trying to source them
I'm holding onto mine and also trying to buy another set of Sport 40's, airbox and Irmscher inlet lol Just to keep :)
Not going to roll the arch lip while you're there?
i would love to do a replica of the group A,i have the build manual lol
Im really, really tempted by the sport engine, its my best mate selling it aswell so i know its all there as i helped him strip the sport it came from.I cant recall anyone going from an xe to a 1300 lol
vaughanmc
18-09-10, 12:04 PM
lol 8v all the way mate
I don't think they need rolled mate, tried some 15's on it and there close but don't touch
Want it to remain factory looking and not have rolled arches etc
It'll only look non-factory if you're lying on the floor lol Fair enough if they'll clear once it's lowered tho :)
vaughanmc
18-09-10, 12:10 PM
I'm sad that way, I like to have things looking as they should instead of looking cut away to make things fit - Not that I'm against rolled arches but that's just my taste :)
loving the project buddy keep up the good work see you at some shows next year.

im the same on that mate and i hate how water/sh*t sits in the arch when its been folded over even if you do fill it with silicone ect it gets in over time!! best leaving them how they are!!

18-09-10, 03:08 PM
Cheers Ricky, I don't know if it'll be at any shows next year but I definately will :)
well fingers crossed it is ehh?
Coming along nicely mate
Still not tempted to spray it white ? I know I would be
vaughanmc
18-09-10, 07:18 PM
Was thinking about doing it white but don't really want to copy a Sport lol I've something very against replicas!
Don't see why it would bother you or anyone else tbh
You have a complete Sport interior so why not ?
Would finish it off nicely IMO.

They were off the Sport so just thought it would be 'correct' to call them Sport stuff as I'd be lying if I said they were GTE ones!
Going to be Sport orientated but not a copy or whatever :)

Been done! It'll be a red version lol with no stickers! I have a couple of 'themes' in my head

It's definately staying red though :)

Very happy with how they turned out for only having basic knowledge atm, couple of wee nicks need sorting and some scratch marks rubbed out but apart from that I'm happy :)
Can't wait to get it completed! Also got my battery leads from a PNG member and got them rigged up today and had the engine turning over as well
Going to get some plug leads and make a temp fuel tank and hopefully fire it up!!! Sounds like it wants to go but I'll know better when the engine's more complete

Looking good, but check the swage line where the bumper would meet. (not picking just trying to help.)

lol Taking my time with the bodywork prep so it's as close to spot on as possible lol
I think you need to be a little more critical with the arch lip & the line above the wrap around of the bumper. I'd be happy having done it myself, but with a wheel, bumper & paint that line wont have much definition or straightness. Just my opinion.

25-09-10, 09:07 PM
There isn't that much filler on that bit mate that's just pretty much as the repair panel comes...Just some filler to tidy up the welds and joins...
It looks a lot better in person and doesn't look too bad with a bumper up against it :)
craig green
25-09-10, 09:15 PM

25-09-10, 09:17 PM
I always accept comments like that - I'll have a look at it the next time I'm down but I'm pretty sure there OK
My mate was in looking at it and he said they look good and I said 'Apart from this bit' and he was about 2cm away from it to see a minor flaw lol So they can't be that bad
We'll see when there painted though - I'm not setting out to build a show car, just want a clean mechanically sound fun toy :thumb:
Guild coat the primer before you rub it down and yes a long hard block. It will show up any high/low points.
vaughanmc
25-09-10, 09:21 PM
I'm going to mate :) Needs some good thick primer on it due to the size of the 'repair'
Doesn't matter about the side, its the sanding that needs a nice thick high build primer.

Very nice mate, much respect as I wouldn't be able to do anything like that tbh
Looking at the pics I see where Craigs coming from, the line just above the bumper slider holes looks like you may need a lil more filler IMO
Nice to hear your painting it yourself tho, respect again.

Great feeling hearing it breathe into life after being stationary for so long lol
Also bought 2L of 2k Flame Red paint today! Some hardner and thinners and some etch primer - Couple of other wee bits and pieces to buy then the paint work can start! Couple of wee bits on the body still to tidy up but it's really getting there now

It's all in the prep mate get that right and even rattle cans give a good result ;)
Looking forward to the pics once sprayed.

28-09-10, 08:37 PM
I'll be spending a good bit of time on the prep making sure all bits are properly keyed - Priming the repaired areas (Not many of them) then a mist of the red paint for something to build onto then a good few coats of lovely Flame Red
Hopefully get all the painting done in one day!
Don't worry there will be pictures once it's done :) Hopefully this year will see it painted, just need to work at it
well done fella, got mine running aswell. like you say its a good feeling when it fires into life after sooo long!! good man for painting it yourself to, my old man normally does the painting but i decided as its my project i'll have a go myself and done the interior, its actually quite easy its just all in the preperation! don't add extra hardener than it says i.e 2:1 etc. more hardener will just make the paint hard and crack for to easy not nessacerly dry faster, if you need it to dry quick you need fast hardener etc. i've used normal hardener, thinners etc just in a normal workshop temps and found it drys ok, just make sure its not dusty!!
vaughanmc
28-09-10, 08:43 PM
Shouldn't be too dusty mate, going to have a major tidy up in the lockup and make sure the floor is well soaked :)
Again I'm not going for a show car look just want the car all one colour and hopefully a decent paint finish :thumb:

vaughanmc
28-09-10, 08:49 PM
I think it's Fast Hardner as it's the same stuff we used at college...Going to get a heater rigged up in there as well to speed things up :)
Just going to take my time with the application, going to also get the room up to temperature before painting as well and see if that works!
I would use a quicker hardner too as you'll be doing it some where with little or no heat.
Taking your time and doing the prep right will see you get a good finish dude.
glad to hear you got it running mate good luck with the painting

Update on the Nova!
Was wanting to do a wee bit before I updated the thread so here goes
First off, I swapped my spare/new Irmscher cam cover for this nicely refurbished, complete Irmscher UK airbox...Like so;
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP237.jpg
Onto the shell - Got all the repairs seam sealed up, flatted back with 400 grit dry paper then some schutz onto the back panel and corners etc;

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP240.jpg
On the ground...Again;
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP241.jpg
Random;
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP244.jpg
Repair on the pillar sanded back and looking top notch, into etch primer now;
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP246.jpg
Mixed up some 2k Primer...Was a bit nervous as I know it's getting close to crunch time lol But was well happy with the application and mixing of the primer but I could argue the air pressure was a bit too high so I'll need to look into that but heres how it sits atm;

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP248.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP249.jpg
Back panel etc after schutzing;
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk1NovaWIP251.jpg
Then one to finish;

I hope the whole car works out the way I want it, I'm kinda going for an early SR theme but with Sport gear as well thrown into the mix - A kinda 'Custom' ;)
I've no idea when it'll be ready for paint, quite a wee while away yet, a lot of prep still to do and some more schutzing and sealing etc - Just wanted the repairs into 2k primer so I can see how it looks and get it all flatted back
The arch repairs are allright, for doing them myself (Except the welding of them) I'm no bodyshop expert...yet lol but I'm fairly happy with them :)

They've came out alright Matt - Not the best tbh but they'll do - Not going to be a bit everyone looks at lol I hope...
Easy enough once you get into it though, I have a better idea of what to do the next time round if I ever do them again

There's different ways to do them lol Some folk lap them over the originals and some folk cut them out - All depends how rotten they are to begin with...
Most folk/places will usually clean up what's there and lap them over
That's what we done with mine because they weren't actually that bad - There just fitted to tidy the place up and preserve the car that wee bit longer...
I didn't take many pics in the WIP stages but talking through it's easy enough :)

So you have put a repair pannel, over the 1/4 and welded on?
Doesnt that make your arches 2mm further out, and any rot is still in the back?
Ive already cut all the rot out, and am debating butting them up:thumb:

Yes mate, that's how most places would do rear arches
They don't sit any further out mate as the repair panels are quite thin..By the time you've got your cataloy on etc and it's all feathered into the original panel it adds up nicely
No rot in the back mate as the original arch lip was cleaned up to bare metal so the new arch lip could be plug welded to it :)

the best thing to have done is have the arch panels but welded to the car, cause when you over lay the panel, you will trap moisture(sp), underneith, which in turn will rot them from the inside out.

Sounds good.
Quick Q, if its all bare metal, wont it rot from the inside out?

My mate's silver Nova's been done the same way and the arch is still in perfect condition - Once it's pumped full of Waxoil and all properly sealed up it should be OK
Etch/Weld Through primer on the bare metal bits so it doesn't rust ;)
Another small update :)
Managed to get myself a metal oil cap that I'm slowly polishing up;

Also finally tracked down an early Mk1 Nova 3dr rear bumper - To match my early theme;

Got a perfect condition early Nova (Sport) radio blank in brown coming as well, paid over the odds for it but I wanted it, I'll get a picture of it when it comes and I also won another genuine Fearless Motorsport rear strutbrace so now my Mk1 and Mk2 Nova will both have them, unless a good offer comes up for one of them lol
That's all for now
Cheers, Vaughan

Yes it will, not right away, but over a small amount of time, it will rot, to reduce the chances or rot, weld through primer is best applied to all bare metal.

^^^^^^^^ Your sad lol.
If you over lap the panels and weld them, the welding process, causes the moisture around the weld, both seen and hidden.

Up to you how you do it like Matt :)
My inner arches are sound but the outer arch lip was a wee bit scabby (Have pics to prove) So instead of the rust coming back through we just lapped a new panel on top of it
As I said, my mate's Nova is done like this as well and it's still perfect :)
