Cheers fella - Nice to hear/read something constructive from you for a change :)

1. Lead loading was for the locks and washer holes so they don't crack but overall the boot is full of wee minor ripples and dents and it would be pointless lead loading them...
2. Karl Rowntree's Nova looks awsome as a Mk1 with a GSi spoiler...So why can't mine

Cheers though :thumb:

Remember all IMO;)

1. If plated i.e. filleted and filled they dont crack..
2. In your opinion, when you get that bit older your will realiselol They are not age related so dont suit. Or so a purist will say;)

Mint FRST
19-01-10, 08:54 PM
nah the mk2 spoiler will suit it besides its his car if he wants it to be different so be it

connor

I gave him my opinion, a freedom of speech so to call. Read my thread reply correctly and understand it;)

I reckon the spoiler/Mk1 combo will work as Iain's Sport looks good and Karl's does as well

It's what I want just now - I can't fast forward time to see me in 10 years saying 'F*ck I wish I'd put a wrap around on this now'

But that's your opinion mate, not wrong :)

in 10 years time you might realise that youve made a mistake putting that spoiler on ??

Is it actually going to take you 10 years to finish the car then ? lol

Anyway IMO the GSi spoiler is the best spoiler, and it goes nicely on the early boot i have one myself.

The wrap around spoiler is better for special models like the GTE and SR.

I like how youve done the locks with lead aswell quality job there, but i would of left the keyhole in the boot, only reason i filled mine in is because there was a dent around it and it would of been easier to just smooth it out than to fix it lol

Keep up the good work man.

I'm wondering how you can mod an all in one bumper to make it look "better"

Other than debadging, however thats a matter of opinion - i think they look better with.

Looks some good progress, lol at the layers of paint!

moffat
19-01-10, 09:02 PM
smooth early boot ftw :)

vaughanmc
19-01-10, 09:04 PM
If it takes 10 years to make the car pretty much perfect then so be it lol But I want it done as soon as possible without cutting any corners really

I wanted it very smooth and clean and un-cluttered looking so the locks had to go and side repeaters probably will as well

That boot had 3 layers on top of the original China Blue...One being black Hammerite

Whoever painted that on there must have been out there tits!

Works looking good, you're learning very well.
My self i'd have welded at plate in a hole then lead loaded it to smooth. But only watched it being done so.. Didn't get the chance tho have a go my self..

Good work.

Great work Vaughan, really impressed with your bodywork skills for your age.

I can't take the credit for the lead loading if that's what you mean but I did rub the doors down with a body file, sand paper, DA and also done the priming myself in the booth with a gun

Done pretty much everything except the lead loading

A boy in my class has been hard at work on the tailgate as well (Hence minimal pictures of that)

Really can't wait to crack on, I feel like I'm getting somewhere

scott.parker
20-01-10, 11:33 PM
After reading that last post i have this picture in my head of a class of about 15 lads your age all slaving away in a practical lesson on your Nova, so your getting it all done for free!! lol lol

vaughanmc
20-01-10, 11:34 PM
Out of the class there's been myself and 2 other boys working away on the panels plus the lecturer lead loading for me

If I didn't bring these in we'd be twiddling our thumbs lol Plus it helps me out too ;)

Was down at the Mk1 today undersealing a wee bit more but decided to do it with a gun to save time and achieve a better finish in the end up so it'll probably be done once the cars running and we can take it through next door and fire it up in the air

Here's some pictures showing the shell with the digicamera:

Panels update:

Drivers door is now in primer inside and outside

Passenger door has been guide-coated, wet flatted, imperfections stoppered and rubbed down ready for primer in the back and another coat of primer on the outside

GSi spoiler is primered top and bottom

Not really touched the tailgate - Needs a lot of work yet but I'll get there

No pictures this time...

Been concentrating getting the Mk2 Nova ready for it's MOT in a few weeks time

Needs trackrod ends, wheel allignment, 2 rear shocks - Who knows what else it might need

No rush for this one either so it's been 'placed gently' and it'll resume once the Mk2 is done and dusted :)

Both delocked doors are home and going to be stored in the garage until the car is going to the bodyshop to be painted - God knows when that'll be though lol

Spoiler is home as well - Not really been doing much with this as my time and money is going into the Mk2 Nova as it needs/needed some stuff for the MOT

Some welding, wheel bearings, trackrod ends etc

Once the MOT is done and by with I'll be cracking on with this beasty

Really no need to paint the engine bay on the MK1 IMO - Very very clean and original, one day it'll get painted though :)

Orange one will either move somewhere else or stay in my garage and be kept as a spare shell for something as it's very very very clean and original too

I'll find the dizzy lol It'll no be far away

Cheers for the comments!

if your doing a rebuild you would be best spraying the bay to make it mint no point cutting corners cos thats all your doing by not painting the bay

[quote=vaughanmc]Really no need to paint the engine bay on the MK1 IMO - Very very clean and original, one day it'll get painted though :) /quote]

the bay is good on it. Even better if your just spraying the outside the same colour. That said, wouldn't take long to do when its all stripped out - will save a lot of hassle in the future stripping it all down again.

craig green
26-02-10, 09:43 PM
Nah I say leave the bay as is, keeps an element of originality or honesty about the car. Similarly I like how spanishflys looks with the newly painted wings on his fire damaged car, in which the rest of the body was unscathed.

spot on mate btw quick noob question you say 1.3 t40 what does the t40 stand for is it size of carb??? baffled

vaughanmc
27-02-10, 05:18 PM
T - Twin
40 - The size of the carbs mate aye :)

T45, T48 etc (For example)

The bay wouldn't need much to paint it but I'm going to leave it as it is I think, looks absolutely perfect condtion

Edd

Any idea when you will be getting it painted ?

Or when it will be on the road ?

vaughanmc
27-02-10, 05:38 PM
Painted - I have no idea mate, going to try and do as much of the prep work myself (Back arches aren't far away, doors are pretty much done, hopefully getting a vented bonnet of VxKev - Still need to source 2 New or Mint front wings for it) No rush for it to be painted

On the road - I have no idea mate, I'd love it done for Billing '11 but you never know

No great rush for this one to be done - Steeper learning curve than the Mk2 Nova, just going to take my time with it

Edd
27-02-10, 05:43 PM
Best way is not to rush, otherwise you'll only end up doing things twice over.

vaughanmc
27-02-10, 05:46 PM
Aye your right mate - Just going to take my time with it

I want all the mechanical stuff done (Engine in and running) Get the car driving, source some 2.0 16v front brakes, make sure all the steering is in tact, give everything underneath a lick of paint to make it look nice then concentrate on the bodywork

Seems like a massive project but everything is pretty much there for it just wee silly things needed but my mate Colin Smith will come in handy for odds and ends lol

paint the block ?

vaughanmc
28-02-10, 03:34 PM
Going to clean the cam housing up maybe paint it silver

Clean the head up maybe paint it silver

Painting the block red :thumb:

Then I'll clean up the sump when it's in the car up high on axel stands so it's nice and fresh looking (B*stard about not having an engine stand)

Then before the engine goes into the shell I'm going to give the engine bay/inner wing area a quick scotch-brite and fresh lick of Flame Red as it would be silly not to when I'm going this far with it

Cheers :)

Looking good mate, what engines going in the orange one now ?

vaughanmc
28-02-10, 03:45 PM
Hmm not too sure yet me and a mate share it so we're undecided lol

I have my 1.2i on the road - He has a 1.2i on the road

I have my 1400 T40 project and he has a 1400 T40 Nova SR project lol

PLUS he has a 1600 8v GTE track car (As shown in my workshop thread)

So the orange shell will be left as a bare shell atm - It's the least of my worrys atm and his as well - Might just donate bits to other projects then see what we're left with lol

28-02-10, 04:45 PM

Will be an early Mk1 SR rep if anything but no vinyls or badges :)

get some vinyl and that on there will look **** hot!! good work though mate!!

Considered it mate but it's not an SR in the 1st place and it would look a lot cleaner without the vinyl etc

I met up with Kev today (Well he met up with me) lol and we done a wee deal on my early Mk1 Nova bootlid for one of his old vented bonnets!

Short and sweet update but I can't wait to see it fitted! All vents are fully functioning as well

Wooooooooooooooooop!

Just had a look through the whole project so far mate. Looking good and taking shape. Like the idea of the Sport engine and should be a very fun car to drive with it. Certainly will be a bit different.

I personally would go for an inverse Sport, but that's just me as I really like black Novas. Think my next Nova will deffo be a black sport rep (probably do it for the wife as I know for a fact that she'll love the LET and will want a Nova :)

Should also look good with the GSi spoiler (I'm doing the same that's probably why lol )

vaughanmc
07-03-10, 05:37 PM
GSi spoiler will be fitted to a normal Nova bootlid now, swapped the early bootlid for the vented bonnet shown above :)

Just going to keep it red, early SR kinda style - Not making it a replica or a look-a-like or anything

Just a quick, well handling Nova to MY spec

Nova_Tek
07-03-10, 05:44 PM
Like I said should be a right hoot to drive, quick yet chuckable. Really wanted a Sport engine in my Nova but hard to come by so I then chnaged and went for a LET lol

When you say normal bootlid? Mine will be fitted to my MK1 boot lid which will be delocked (well it has been now). Was thinking about a wrap around spoiler but just liked the look and tidyness of the GSi spoiler.

vaughanmc
07-03-10, 05:45 PM
Sport engine is now sold mate to Greg who bought the Sport shell from me - But the 1400 SR engine with the Sport 40's etc is going into this shell :thumb:

Normal bootlid as in...Late Mk1/Mk2 bootlid :)

vaughanmc

Definately going to be clean and should be nice to look at as well

Just got to focus on the Mk2 Nova for a wee while then start back up with this one

vaughanmc
09-03-10, 05:37 PM
Had a wee hour out in the garage the night cleaning and making a start to painting the front of the 1400 SR engine

I've never done this before in my life (Pictures might show that lol) But I'm learning as I go and it'll be mint to say 'I done that...'

I'm just going for a clean/useable look not going 100% pure show car and chrome as it WILL be driven and not laid up all year

So here's what I started with, a fairly clean 1400 SR complete engine:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203030.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203031.jpg
A screw driver to get the s*it out of the nooks n crannies, some WD40 to help clean it a wee bit and some wire brushes to rough up and clean the surface (Not sure if that's the right approach but it's worked/working for me atm) Dried all the engine off with some dusters etc and got it ready for the 1st coat of paint (Red Smoothrite)
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203032.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203034.jpg
Arty shot for the craic lol
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203036.jpg

I'll probably be out tomorrow to do some more cleaning and painting on it -

Just letting the paint dry off tonight and I'll inspect it in the morning

Comments/suggestions welcome

Went down this morning for a couple of hours to do a wee bit of work on the Mk1 Nova

Dug out the dash and all the bits and fitted them back together - I can see why people change Mk1 dashes to the Mk2 one lol - I've mis-placed a passenger side heater blank but I'll find that nearer the time of the interior going in:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203128.jpg
The clocks:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203129.jpg
The rear springs I plan to use - They say -50mm but looking at them I don't think so...
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203130.jpg
Had a wee shot at fitting the loom back up as it had been removed before I got the car - Looked a night mare but seemed easy enough once you know where everything goes. Just need to tidy it up and connect everything together when it starts to go back together - Everything is pretty much in place now though so I'm happy about that:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203131.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203132.jpg
Dug the Sport interior out of the cupboard so I could make a start in cleaning it, thought I'd be as well starting to clean it whilst I have the time to do so before the project starts getting hectic lol So here goes; Rear seats all hoovered and the vinyl bits dressed:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203134.jpg
Front seats are slightly more faded looking but their 25 years old and have been used a lot since they came from a Sport lol I reckon they'll need Vax'd

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203137.jpg
Front doorcards - Dressed with this Turtle Wax cockpit shine stuff - Didn't need much as they came from a low mileage Nova Swing:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203138.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/SV203139.jpg
Rear quarter cards are still down with the shell as well as the boot plastics and shelf supports - I'll bring them home tomorrow and clean them up as well as the dash etc so it's all clean ready for the re-fit

Cheers, Vaughan

Coming along well Vaughan. Engine is looking better. Looks like we had the same dash (mine being black now)

Interior looks clean and a decent valet should make it mint.

Those springs look like they'll lower 50mm. These are mine and they are 30mm - 35mm

only way to see for sure is to get them on the car. What brand springs are they?

vaughanmc

You don't like the mk1 dash then ? lol

the original and proper dash for a nova, if installed right it will not rattle like alot of people think.

Mount it on rubber O rings on the bulkhead and sound deaden it with sone Dynamat of suchlike and it will be fine.

Anyway the main reason for the update - I finally got something that I'd been after for many many many years (2002 to be exact - When I 1st saw Brett Warburton's Nova in Total Vauxhall (Peppermint guise)
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0001-1.jpg
Just got to get myself a boss and that's another wee job on the to-do list ticked off

How good it feels to get something you've been after for such a long time!!! Amazing

Good job as there utter crap

when do you think you will get more done on the shell ?
Any idea when you will get it painted ?
Staying red ?

If all goes to plan this week coming I'll get some paint and tidy up the engine bay then the engine needs to go back together (Starter, alternator, carb (standard one to make sure engine is OK) exhaust) Then get the engine running!

No idea when the shell/panels will be painted - I was thinking about doing it myself to practise...Only one way to learn and it can be rubbed back down if it ends up s*it

Yes mate, it's staying red :) Best colour for a Nova IMO

A wee update for today - Got my finger out and went into my garage (Not the lock-up) and dug out everything I could get for the 1400 SR engine

Sorted it out - Probably missed some things but I'll find them as I need them

I'm not a big fan of painted engines and engine components (I don't mind the block being painted) but anything else looks tacky in my opinion but other folks views are different

I got the alternator out and gave it a wee clean and a wirebrush to make it look a bit nicer:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0001-2.jpg
Found some hoses from the 1400 engine and some from the old 1300 SR engine that came out the orange Nova and theres probably some still there for the Sport engine. Not the cleanest but they'll be hidden anyway:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0005.jpg
Oil pump is a bit tatty but theres a better one from the Sport down at the lock-up so I'll have a look at it and probably use it but heres the one from the 1400 engine:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0004-1.jpg
Alternator mount; Not much to see really lol
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0003-1.jpg
Gave the starter motor a wee clean up as well - Again it won't be seen but it's cleaned up anyway
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/PIC_0002-1.jpg
Should be more of an update on Thursday when I get the engine bay tidied up and start to re-fit all this stuff and get the engine one step closer to running!

John, it came off either the 1300 SR engine or the 1.4 SR engine that was in the orange Nova...Will it still work ? If not there's a couple more kicking about

Not sure if you know but thats the engine breather not an oil pump ;)
Give it a good clean out with some petrol or parrafin.
Also there are two types, the early one has a single outlet & this is the later one with two. With you running the carbs you need the early one or blank off the smaller outlet on the later one.

Also are you not chaning the alternator bracket for the Sport one to run the carbs?

Keep up the good work

Rich

I have a proper Sport one there mate so might use that

There's also an alternator bracket at the lockup as well - Really need to sort everything out so I know what's going on and what to use

Cheers for the comment Rich - Much appreciated :)

Small update for today - Painted the engine bay and around the headlights on Tuesday night

Went in today and buffed it up with G3 to see how it turned out and also buff out where I'd blended the new paint to old - Looks decent enough and I'm happy with it:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk12.jpg
Got the starter and oil breather thing back onto the engine - With a new gasket - Was the one I needed with one outlet instead of the one with 2 outlets shown above^^^
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk18.jpg
Alternator and alternator bracket fitted - Got the lowering bracket as well but I think that needs to be fitted when the inlet manifold is fitted ?

Random engine bay shot:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Mk17.jpg
Hopefully tomorrow will see the hoses all connected up, rad in place and maybe exhaust manifold and carb/inlet manifold fitted up as well - Get it closer to firing up!!!

Engine bay looks good, when are the carb's going on?

vaughanmc
20-05-10, 04:00 PM
No idea mate - The plan is to get them rebuilt/serviced but run the engine on a standard carb until the 40's are done

It WON'T be going on the road with the standard carb it's just so I can hear the engine running and save less hassle but when it goes on the road it WILL have the 40's fitted :)

Engine bay looks a mess with the flash of the camera but it's really nice and I'm very happy with it

Cheers Stevie, Tek and William :) Bottles aren't staying there mate just trying to give myself the most access

Me and my mate Greg started to put my engine together today - Decided to use the standard carb and exhaust manifold to fire the engine up just incase theres any expensive problems with the engine and I don't want to spend all the money on the manifold and have nout left to sort the engine if anything goes wrong

So we fired on the standard inlet and exhaust for the time being so we can run the engine and make sure it's tidy then the 4 branch will be bought and the 40's rebuilt and serviced then everything will be dandy

Excuse the dirty/rusty parts lol

Was down at the Nova today for a wee while to put my time in before I went for my new front tyres for the other Nova

Got the car moved into the middle (As my mates Nova SR shell is now sold)
Got it up in the air as well and all wheels and front suspension/brakes etc off:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Project6.jpg
Dug out my spare back axel and got it ready for the shot-blasters; GSi rear ARB with 2 bushes:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Project5.jpg
The back axel itself:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Project4.jpg
Thick front tiebars off the old Nova Sport shell:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/New%20Nova/Project3.jpg
No idea when they'll be going to the blasters - Might try and get them down tomorrow then get the bootlid and 2 doors off the shell ready for the replacements to be fitted

More updates/pictures tomorrow

It's always a nice touch, cleaning and painting all the flakey rusty bits and just makes the car feel so much 'fresher'.

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:16 PM
I know mate, I'm thinking to myself 'Why am I bothering as it won't be seen'

But it'll be worth it and piece of mind that it's all done :)

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:18 PM
True but I bet if you didn't clean it and paint it you'd say

'sh*t, I'm such a n0b, should've cleaned up all those bits when I had 'em off the car'

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:19 PM
Aye that's true mate lol Never going to be perfect or a 100% show car

It's going to be driven *abused* and dirty etc etc

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:22 PM
Either way mate, when it comes to cleaning it, fresh stuff always cleans up better than old rusty shizzle ;)

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:24 PM
Aye mate your right lol Won't be spending any/much time cleaning underneath though

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:29 PM
You could clean them up yourself dude. If it'll be used and abused and not cleaned often then why spend good money on blasting them. Power drill + wire brush attachment and let the sparks fly and watch the sh*t come off. That's how I did mine (dunno if you saw my project thread).

Bit of paint for a few £ and job jobbed.

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:32 PM
I did see it mate - Just thought blasting would be more efficient and that way nothing would be missed...I might give the wire brush/drill thing a go though :)

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:35 PM
I won't lie, it wasn't like a 3 min job. Took about 30mins with the drill to remove all the stuff off it but I got it back to metal without much fuss.

Yeah it's a lot faster with a blasting but I couldn't justify me spending money for something that I could do. That or get the grinder out lol

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:41 PM
Theres a wire brush thing where the Nova is kept so I probably will do that then I'll crack out the Hammerite

Not going to all the hassle of spraying the beam etc or getting them powdercoated

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:44 PM
If you're not going for all the hassle of powder coating mate there's no need to go to the hassle of blasting (in my opinion). Wire brush, whack the rust off, bit of paint, bang it on.

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:45 PM
I think that'll be the plan mate - Might as well when I have the resources there and all bolts and nuts can be easily cleaned up as well and re-used

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:47 PM

Cleaning the nuts and bolts was the hardest job for me.

Wire wheel, small to large, Toolstation ftw lol
U-pol acid etch primer,
Hammerite smooth, black and silver,

Job done.

That's what iv done for most of the bits for my Sport mate.

Powercoating is a option but this way is just as good and more satisfying IMO, and cheaper also.

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:53 PM
Hammerite Smooth; Silver and Yellow ;)

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:54 PM
Same here mate, but I though that I probably wouldn't have this opportunity to get all these bits off and sorted while the car is in bits and off the road, meaning there's no rush to get it done quickly.

Proved to be worth while as everything looks new. People think that the car has had all new parts, till I tell them that they are older than their kids at college or older than their girlfirend lol.

vaughanmc
16-06-10, 10:55 PM
I just want it all to come together lol I'm a person who thinks 'F*ck, I've loads to do' instead of thinking 'I can do this this and this...Then get this and this another time'

I'm learning as I go along though :)

Nova_Tek
16-06-10, 10:56 PM

Only need two tools and the paint

£10 wollworths power drill (bought when they existed)
£5 wire brush from B&Q
£8 Etch primer
£4 for Enamel black paint
£6 hammerite smooth silver

Done all the parts using the above.

I'll crack on tomorrow

Start a months job trial next Monday as a panel beater/spray painter so there'll be no updates for nearly a month providing I get the job...If I do get it, the updates will be less and less but hopefully I'll can get my Saturday back and work on the car then and have money to throw at it :)
