View Full Version : Nova Saloon wip
Might as well have a wip for the saloon I guess if nothing else but to keep me from lagging behind on it..
This is it....

This is what it weighed at the start..

This is what happened 10 seconds after Rob returned it to me this afternoon.. (please note, the yellow stuff is glue not rust..lol)

Well I guess I need some sort of list of what I hope to be doing, it'll probably change but here's a start...
Interior out.
Glass out and Lexan Polycarbonate windows in.
Rollcage in.
Rear disc conversion.
Dash modification.
Smallblock engine change.
Larger front brakes.
Modified suspension.
Re-paint.
Looks pretty clean, liking the plans :thumb:

Will be keeping an eye on this.
If the headlining comes out can I have first refusal?
Looks pretty clean, liking the plans :thumb:
It's only done 28,000, it's super tidy underneath, very very little rust, a few minor surface patches on the body but they will soon be sorted prior to paint.

The headlining is coming out. :thumb:
Please do it properly and if its undamaged I'll pay what you want for it :thumb:
was going to say the red interior looks awsome witht the silver paint, but then youve ripped it out lol but what you doing sounds awsome :thumb: oh what you doing witht the carpet
Please do it properly and if its undamaged I'll pay what you want for it :thumb:
If it's that important, before I lay a finger on it....do you want to take it out yourself?
It would of been nice to do it when the glass was out tbh, but I'd like to help/have a go at it yeah

Carpet....I 'think' Graeme is having it, but not sure he actually 'needs' it, so you might want to have a word with him...
It would of been nice to do it when the glass was out tbh, but I'd like to help/have a go at it yeah
How desperate are you? As I don't mind leaving it untouched until I am ready for the window change but that would be early next year I expect...
Another option I guess.....If I got a car cover we could take the windows out...lol It's garaged...but I hate spiders..lol
I'm despirate for a mint 2 door headling but not in a short period of time, Is there a good time to call you tomorrow? And I'll donate the carpet to Rob and whatever else, if he promises to get this blue saloon out some time soon lol

Shall do Graeme, will get a cover then they can come out :thumb:
Todays update with thanks to Dave and Naomi...
All windows out, no breakages, windows are needed so the perspex people have a template and rubbers are needed to put the perspex back in, so, careful was the watchword of the day...
Whilst we were at it, we figured we'd have the dash out too.
All ready for Graeme to come and remove the headlining...lol

Should we assume that the asthma pump has been removed now from the bay!?lol
Dear god no, I managed to get that far today and I have stomach flu...not easy..lol
Been lax with this, too much work at the moment, however then chap that is welding the cage in is hoping to have the Nova over to his place next weekend, which means that it needs to be stripped ready for him (Just the wheels, suspension and steering will be on). There is no way I can work on it during the week so that only leaves this weekend. And as such Dave (DJGritt) has very kindly volunteered his services again to finish stripping it tomorrow, so we shall update again tomorrow evening.

Incidently, we weighed the Wilwood caliper and bracket and it weighed less than my friends V6 caliper bracket, that's right, JUST the bracket!
I spent ages messing about with discs for mine, i now use golf discs. They perfect.
Well, they sell a kit, so they can fix the issue..lol
Basically, the discs are supplied with a very slim spacer and spigot plate and with that inplace the disc touches the caliper, remove it and it's perfect, however with the spigot the disc is not perfectly central, so I need a different spigot from them.
What size are your discs Benn?
djgritt
16-05-10, 05:02 PM
Mark, it MAY be worth seeing if you can source some Meriva 280mm 4-stud Discs - I don't know if they need any form of spigot though, ill ask on CS...
The disc falls further to the wheel on the wilwood set up thats why factory discs can't be used

The fitment issue pictured/described is with Wilwood supplied Discs...
We had the same issue when we trial fitted them to my Corsa yesterday.
If we remove the Wilwood Spigot-spacer, everthing lines up perfectly, but we then have the need for a spigot due the the hub bore on the disc being larger.
I agree with your second post and thats what Mark has stated but your first post suggested changing to a Vauxhall disc which I know alot of people have tried and hasn't worked with the wilwood set up

Why do you actually need the spiggot?
As to me, its only to keep the disk from floating round during wheel changes etc.
Just buy the "Stud" kit, in this months total vauxhall, and line it up this way.
Thats if the holes on the disks, are perfect for the studs. As it "Could" wobble.
The stud holes are never perfect so there is the chance for shift and wobble.
Might aswell say, being as I know a few would wish to take the piss...
Have lost a stone in weight myself too.
What size are your discs Benn?
Mine are different cause i use 5stud.
I dont think you'll get Vx disc that fit.. Cause of the offset of the disc cause of where the calipar sits.
Ok, cheers anyway mate..
Right, whilst myself and DJ were test fitting the brakes, we came across the problem of the 3mm spacer and integral centralising spigot was a problem.
Basically, the 3mm spacer is the issue as it pushes the disc out so that it touches the caliper. Also, to run the wheels I want (15 Inch Cav Cesaro's) I will need to run a 3mm wheelside spacer. At the time Dave remarked that a good solution would be to run the wilwood spacer/spigot wheelside instead of hubside. This unfortunately wouldn't work as the spacer/spigot has a lipped edge that stops it sitting flush with the disc.
Well, after a lot of thought and differing ideas on possible solutions, I spoke to a neighbour that builds these...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/184589f5.jpg
And we decided we should be able to modify the existing wilwood plate to fit wheelside and thus still work as a spigot to keep the disc true but also still work as a 3mm spacer to allow me to use my Cesaro's.
So, here we go..How it should sit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/53019c55.jpg
Onto the lathe.

And fitted how I want it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/b5d7217e.jpg
Then screw hole recessed for the disc locating screw. Job done!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/1589f475.jpg
It's not the most technical fix, but for me it's pretty damn good.

Have lost a stone in weight myself too.
Make that 2 Stone and 3 Inches around my waist..lol
Re the disc, could you not do like i did a find a disc that fits direct?
The issue is disc offset, it's easy to find a 280mm disc that's the right width (Meriva I think has them) but without buying the disc and trying it on you won't know if it sits right in the caliper.
I know, i had the same probs, No Gm disc will fit, what i ment is, measure the total thick-ness of the disc, then the braking surface. (says 50mm total, braking surface is 25mm, you then look for a disc that's the same, as the off set is 25)
If that makes sense... This is how i did mine, i now use VW discs and that are a direct fit (i run 5stud) now rings or anything.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/197be727-1.jpg
I.e. Measure A & B yes?
But where do I find a company that lists disc offset?
Yes, give me total width (down thru the center hole to floor) then your A, center bore too please, i have a book her that shows me all. I spends ages working mine out.
So i can do this.. (how i did mine) Would think your disc is the same...

The brake lines in the pic, are they ready made to fit the Wilwoods and then a gm fitting brake line?
yes, wilwood one end gm the other.
Ooo where did you get them? As the ones i have are way way way to long.
I'll have a look in my book to see what discs you might be able to use..
Rally Design, don't think they were very cheap £14.50 Plus VAT a side??
I am using standard 4-stud hubs so that's 56.6mm isn't it?
Do you have a part number of anything? And 15 a side is better than the really long try to wrap them selfs around the drive shaft i have now...
On my paperwork they are just listed as 'S' for special..Give them a call and ask them, failing that I could ask them to make me a spare set??
I'll ring them tomoz, if not i'll pm ya.
Coolio..any luck on the discs? lol

Sorry Scott, didn't mean to make it look like I was aiming that at you..lol
I've had a few people saying "Why don't you use a another Nova instead of one in such good condition" but why would I want to use anything but the best I could get my hands on at the time??
I'm just happy I won't have to do so much shell work aswell as the modifications.

Umm, not so true, i really enjoy driving/owning my Jamaica MK1, possibly enjoy it more then the MK2 tracker...;)
No worries Mark i didn't think it was directed JUST at me lol, and i understand your reasoning, it makes perfect sense, hence why i bought the mk2 track shell off Chris 16v.

Looking awesome mate - I dont suppose you have the rear shelf do you?
Sorry mate, no, it went with the interior and the only bit I have left of that is the rear panel trim that goes inside the boot between the lights.
proper job :D although more of that rear shelf can come out, are you leaving the dash panel in as well?
Ok, but i still think they are boring. Unless they are proper concourse mint they do nothing for me. Everything can be made better in my eyes.
Theres a certain charm to driving a crappy standard nova, it's just that bad you have to laugh or you'd cry lol There's a novelty to it over driving more modern cars

Hmmn, well the CC Cage comes with a dash bar, so I will see how it fits before removing that much.
i removed mine after the cage was fitted, there is plenty of room to :d
Front brakes off, steering column off and pedal box/linkage out.

Why have you removed the slam and bulk head? Just for more room?
Slam panel has been cut out so it can be modified to make it a bolt in version like pugs etc for ease of work.
Bulk head is a space/airflow sort of thing. Being that the Corsa Brake pedal is going in and the Corsa Bias box, wiper under the scuttle and heater/fan intake hole being covered.
Cool, never found the slam panel removal gives that much more room (have only worked on one with it removed tho)

/\/\/\/\ how much?
If you dont mind me asking!
£155 inc sliders in front windows and a choice between 2 piece front (like I have) or 1 piece. ( I think though that the price is due to go up slightly very soon buy around a tenner, but still a very cheap set really.)
be interested to see how they fit first
Be a while yet mate, but I have laid them over my glass panes which he used as a template and they are an exact match so I don't foresee any issues.

That seems a good price for the set and I'm glad there is a choice of 2 or 1 piece fronts. Will probably give him a call in 2014 when I'm ready to order some for mine.
Well, the Bonnet catches have arrived today.

So I can get them fitted into the fibreglass bonnet and then at the same time fit the intake/vent, still not decided if I will use 1 or both and where yet..lol

Strut top plates..
Where I have marked it red?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/05789d68-1.jpg
Yeah, surely stitching around the inside will give more strench no?
Quite likely..I'll have a word and see.
most definitely would, all you have atm is the strut top needing to bend the welds to deform in the same way it always would, if you stitch the inside it basically forms a big H beam across the strut top almost.
Right another update...Part way through the cage, obviously it's only spot welded in place currently to check position and there are other bars still to fit, but you get the jist...

Yes CC Cage.
Yes profiled kit.
Fit is very good, but not perfect and some minor adjustments have to be made, but CC tell you that anyway.
om nom nom nom.
mark, simple answer, dont fit the other bar. this was something i discussed quite abit with my cage builder. ive just got the single bar as you have now and getting in and out is a piece of piss
I may just do this instead..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/ea0975e8-2.jpg
for the weight you'd pick up with the bar theres not much point tbh, it would be passing any load sideways into the exact centre of a bar, which is the easiest way to flex it, simply put it wouldn't really add any strength or stiffness
The Simps
14-07-10, 12:13 PM
Is it not going to be ok how he's currently got it?
Probably, but the kit comes as a crossbar version so I really wanted to keep that bit, but doubt I would be able to.
Is it not going to be ok how he's currently got it?
With the single bar? yeah sure, nothing wrong with that, pretty common cage design, door bars are really a safety thing more than structural stiffness for suspension etc, but that half bar really won't add much at all to it.
I may just do this instead..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/ea0975e8-2.jpg
I was thinking the same.
Will look like this:

Would leaving the second bar out/fitting a half bar not compromise the FIA Compliance?
If it does and you HAVE to leave it out for access reasons, you may as well do what I suggested, and lower the current bar by a couple of inches too seeing as the FIA stuff would be thrown out the window...
Something I would need to clarify Monday Dave.

crickey, attention to detail man here..
cant wait to see what you end up with. Nice one.
Not much of an update I'm afraid, been waiting for extra metal for the harness bar and to make the gusset plates etc.
However the bottom arms are welded, just need painting and then the poly bushes fitting..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HMDA3MDQtMjAxMDA3MjEtMTU0MC5qcGc.jpg
Right...
It was deemed that even with adjustment (read..massive hammer) that the rear coilovers just wouldn't be perfect with the origional rear arch, so some more work was completed and then the previous welds around the car were covered too.
