Awesome mate - better than expected?

As said - you will quickly get bored with the std 1800 in there, you would need 200 bhp+ before you had to worry about corners! lol

Mark
16-08-10, 10:31 AM
Yes Will, I am extremely happy with the result so far.

I'll give the 1800 a chance and see how it goes..lol

How hard is it to remove the metal rear seat back rest and rear shelf...? I take it these are not structual?

Cage is awesome btw!

Mark
22-08-10, 09:28 AM
Easy, it is spot welded along the side so if your careful using a spot weld drill bit you can remove the bulk of it without damage, the upper section under the rear window is a little more difficult as it spot welds to the window seat, we chose to cut along leaving a couple of inches of metal for ease and looks, you could easily remove more if you so chose to. As for structural, the panel is thin and flexible and I'd go as far as to say it would provide little to no strength to the shell, being that in mine the cage does all that anyway now and realistically, without the panel, it's no different than having a large open space like a hatchback.

250 Miles today, picking up/dropping off/visiting..

1 of my pickups was a gearbox for the Nova, the donor car that game me the engine had lunched the gearbox and I gave away the F10 4-speed, so picked up an F17 Hydraulic 3.74 close ratio.

is that inlet not going to be literally in the turret?

Mark
02-09-10, 11:04 PM
Won't know until I fit it, but if it is, I can just take it off and fit trumpets instead....which I may do anyway...or turn it around and have it face the passenger side like a turbo.

Whats under the inlet cover then Mark? Do they have trumpets on? I am guessing they do - but they are like 3mm long! lol

Mark
03-09-10, 09:49 AM
The cover unbolts and leaves the plate which has recessed lips, no trumpets, but you can unbolt the adaptor plate and replace with trumpets.

Well, after a decent chat with friends on Sunday, I have pulled out the stops and Ordered my new seat, delivery by the end of the month...Progress will be made!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/54392c5d.jpg

Best part of £600 including side mounts for the 1 seat.

This means it can go back to the weld shop for the seat rails, rear harness bars, final door bar. The steering column, pedals, handbrake and gearstick positions can all be finalised.

Then it can go off for shell prep and paint.

Benn

£600 for one seat? Funk.

scott.parker
18-05-11, 06:03 PM
Yeah since there is more interest in track days etc, Ive noticed the price on seats has gone mad!

I bought both (SET X2 SEATS/MOUNTS) my cobeau sprints with alloy side mounts back in 2007 for the sum of £435 posted, now your looking at that price for just one!

Good seat mate, i would love to upgrade mine, but as said cost way too much now..

A note of thanks goes to one of my bosses who said "You said you wanted a battery cable from a Beemer, so I kept one for you", very kindly he removed it from a 7 series scrapper for me...Well, turns out there are 3 together and rather long too..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/0e78d6f1.jpg

All 3 run from one end of my Vectra Estate to the other end so will be plenty long enough to move the battery to the boot of the Saloon.

There are 3 cables and 3 thickness's and as you can see from the next picture the thickest cable is nearly as thick as my thumb.

Well, about time this was brought up to date...

Collected these (only 1 side in pic) from Essex...
Seriously expensive paperweights.

Right, trial fitting completed, happy with the rear disc/caliper fitment, so it can be stripped, modified for coilover use and powdercoated.

It occurred to me after looking at this picture again...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTEwODA2LTAwOTcxLmpwZw.jpg

That the calliper was too far away from the disc and upon checking the pads were half on, half off the disc.....damnit...I was supplied the wrong calliper mounting plates, I was supplied ones for a 5-stud as the discs are bigger so the calliper sits further away.
Here, you can see the difference.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTEwODE0LTAxMDAyLmpwZw.jpg

So, with the correct plates fitted...bang on..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTEwODE0LTAxMDAzLmpwZw.jpg

And another makes 2......(And just over a £1000 on seats alone)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTEwODIwLTAxMDI2LmpwZw.jpg

This one is new too, but as you can see, differs very slightly in that it has 2 Corbeau Badges on the inner headrests.

And Plonked into position....

And more...

Existing steering wheel removal kit is far too cumbersome, as you have to fit it inbetween the boss and wheel, so I have bought a new vehicle specific one. The benefit is weight and size as it reduces the distance for the column to the wheel by a good 2 inches, might not sound a lot, but when fitted it is very noticeable...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/utf-8BSU1HLTIwMTEwOTMwLTAxMTUxLmpwZw.jpg

I like them..a lot. Plus LUKE are the official Belt partner for Corbeau seats, plus they are 3 Inch versions and loop hole rear for the harness bar.

It has to go back to the welders now to have the seat rails put in, the harness bar fitted, hole for gear linkage cut, handbrake hole welded over and steering column moved to suit the new driving position....Then paint....Maybe..lol

I ment for the Astra rear disc?

Mark

I ment for the Astra rear disc?

Ah, I see...I didn't no as my beam was already a disc converted beam when I bought it, if your beam is a standard one, the normal conversion plates will need fitting. Or find the incredibly rare Tigra B 4 stud rear discs setup as that doesn't need the plates.

Benn
06-01-12, 09:23 PM
My beam is already disc, arnt Tirga the same as Corsa.. Mean them beam will be too wide and wont line up....

Mark
06-01-12, 09:28 PM
If your beam is already disc then you need Astra MK4 1.8 SXi 4-stud and certain 2.0ltr diesels stuff. Ignore the rear beams, yes corsa B and Tigra A is the same thing. I am on about the very very rare Tigra B's that have 4 stud rear disc setup, the hub pattern is the same as the standard nova pattern so no welding required...But your's is already done, so it doesn't matter.

Benn
06-01-12, 10:37 PM
Ah sorry get ya now. As it's a case of the beam needs welding, imight as well just carry on with what i have tbh. If it could be done with out then i'd build one. But using the 5stud stuff.

Mark
06-01-12, 10:57 PM
The reason I chose this setup was 1. that it is massively lighter than the usual older astra/cav setup used that has inboard handbrake, 2. is that the older stuff is around 260mm and this setup is 240mm.

Most people that running rear disc conversion on the nova complain of overbraking on the rear and having to turn the bias to 90-95% front. I figure (and I might be wrong..lol) that as I will be using smaller discs the problem will be easier to deal with as the brakes would need to work a little harder.

Benn
07-01-12, 08:00 AM
Ah right, i knew the set up was lighter. Over braking can be a/the bad bit yes.

Just a quick one with your rear brakes, I was running standard sr front brakes/disks on the rear of my rally nova. To ovoid over braking I simply reduced the pad size by half. I didn't have a bias valve and they never locked up no matter how much pain I gave them :thumb:

Coming together very nicely now with all the extra goodies being made, and those wings look ace, makes me want a saloon now lol

Oh and another vote for silver ;) only disadvantage being though it's a metallic so if you nudge it and need to respray it'll be more expensive.
On the other hand how about making it a Sport replica :d

Fiesta vents are too long and the rotator mech is too deep so you can't cut them down...

Way too long but the rotator mech is short allowing them to be easy cut down to size.

What did you use to remove the side trim pins? Does removing them leave much of a mess?

Anglegrinder with a very thin metal cutting disc to lop off the pins and then a belt sander to make them flat. Mess? Not really, they are no longer there so when the car is painted you'd never know it had any.

Mark unless you have tested where your internal shifter is going? You might find you need to more out closer toward the bulk, almost upto the welded seam, as i had to on mine, as it was rubbing on the selector rod trying to engage 3rd and 5th.

Still... lovely job on everything els mate, very impressive!

Yep, but then you could stop it suppose by making sure you get the stick mounted far back/in the correct place for your hole allowance, Dar did mine, but as i say it rubbed, lol look in my track car wip i had to butcher it open with grips as i couldn't get in with the dash in!

Heres what i did mate!

Told you it was a cheap torch coming your way lol

I had to take a little bit more metal out of there aswell.

I used the corsa internal shifter and linkage as it is a direct fit, no shortening of the shaft required :thumb:

I even got realy giddy and welded a washer in front of that hole/underneath for the shifter to slide in to remove any form of play :thumb:

Storage space for my Engine doner Astra expired so I had a desperate strip session all by myself last night and today...

The upside is a 55,000 mile X18XE1 & F17 Gearbox plus all associated loom and another 4-stud rear disc conversion. I already have an X18XE1 in the garage but couldn't resist a lower mileage one.
