If you spent half the time racing this than just changing things you might get somewere

Missing the point totally - much of the fun is in changing things.

I took the engine and gearbox out of the Daewoo Lanos today, with a view to swapping all the hydraulic clutch bits onto my F13 gearbox in the Nova.

Not quite as straightforward as I had hoped! The Lanos obviously has a slightly different gearbox casing, as the bracket for the clutch slave cylinder will only attach by one out of two bolts;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/013_zps5a1534e8.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/013_zps5a1534e8.jpg.html)

As you can see, there is a design difference at this part of the gearbox, where the second bracket bolt attaches on the Lanos;

Anyway, not the end of the World, the clutch release arm bolts in OK, although I have posted a question in 'Mechanical' as I need help with knowing how much 'throw' is need on a clutch release bearing!

Anyway, the Lanos has donated the important bits for the conversion;

The Daewoo engine is quite interesting, based on the 1300/1400 OHC 8v engine, there may be some useful parts for people using these engines in their Novas, as they have fuel injection, alloy sump, power steering pumps, different engine mounts, different alternator and probably more that I haven't found yet.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I will post up a bunch of photos for reference.

Looks interesting that, can you not put your cluster in the lanos casing?

Hi Ben,

Yes, that may be a possibility, although there may be other differences which might prevent that, I'm not sure.

But this Lanos casing does feel heavier (I haven't weighed it, it's just the impression I get), and I do like the fact that the F13 'box has the access plate to allow the clutch to be accessed in-situ.

With thanks to Jezz (Toymex on here) I now have a nicer looking manifold for the engine - a BTB one which has been coated by Camcoats;

Interesting, thanks. I'm keeping hold of the engine just in case it becomes useful for me (or someone else) at some point in the future.

I'm using the excellent CARTEK stuff (they've also supplied me a battery isolator kit) - they are fairly local to me and did me a great deal on the parts.

We went up to the Race Retro Show at Stoneleigh Park yesterday (recommended day out) - Ari Vatanen, Jimmy McRae and lots of lovely race cars. There's also an autojumble where I acquired a new 'Docking' (F1 fabricators) alloy radiator, and a rather interesting ex-A1 GP battery jump start pack at very good prices;

The radiator will need a few modifications to make it work (notably relocation of one of the in/out pipes), plus some mounting brackets. But it fits very neatly in the car. I may well install it in a slanted position, which will be better for weight distribution and airflow.

Yet another distraction (thanks to T45-ste), it's stunning to look at and will save over half a kilo with a bit of re-engineering to make it fit;

By pure chance it is not too dissimilar from my current gear lever - the pivot point is almost placed identically, and the thickness isn't far off either;

Not so much of an update, more of a series of excuses for why there hasn't been much done on the Nova in recent months..........

Pimped up my van (with a set of alloys);

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/024_zpstdxxbphe.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/024_zpstdxxbphe.jpg.html)

Dragged out a stainless steel workbench from storage which I've had for years, as I plan to be doing a lot of welding soon, so my wooden-topped bench is not ideal any more;

And this is the reason I plan to be doing more welding, and also why I've been doing a lot of overtime of late ;);

And I've started other works with a view to making life easier (in the long term, definitely not in the short term!).

I'm digging out the area behind my garage so I can store my trailer there (view is of the rear of the garage where I installed an extra door so I can drive through);

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/030_zpskwvg7kn0.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/030_zpskwvg7kn0.jpg.html)

And I decided that I need more storage, so I've started building another garage at the rear of my house. There is sadly no access to get a car to the back of the property, but at least I will be able to get a lot of my stuff out of the Nova's home garage and give myself some room to move. Early days yet, lots of work to do;

It was a major undertaking just to get the concrete garage, roofing panels, hardcore etc. to the building site, as it's well over 100 metres from the drop-off - if only I could just drive to the site, life would be easy.

And there has been a little bit of progress on the Nova, I am currently fitting the front end properly, and mounting the rear calipers;

I shall be there so may say hi if I see you about.

RE the wiper I think for ease of installation an Uno one would be best. Can't remember the weight but you will be able to find that pic I sent of one on the scales somewhere.

I had a Toyota Aygo (107 / C1) rear one out the other day which was very light and secures on just one mounting hole. Sadly it quickly sold before I thought to weigh it.

I keep on thinking about rear wiper motors, and the Aygo one is interesting, thanks.

I suppose the main thing to work out will be the angle of the screen. Rear screens tend to be nearer to vertical, whereas front screens are more angled.

I can't picture an Aygo/C1/C1 screen without a bit of Google research, but it will definitely be worth looking at. I'm planning to get a new wiring loom made up soon, so I need to get all the electrical components finalised beforehand.

Yes, the regs require a working wiper arm/motor.

In practice of course it never gets used for short-distance stuff like a hillclimb, Rain-X is fine.

Does it have to have an electric motor? could you not fit a manualy opperated one like the old jeeps. If your never going to use it who cares if its manual. would be the lightest option.

It's definitely made the rear beam a lot lighter!

I don't really need the back brakes to do very much, so I could afford to pare it down as far as I dared. The whole car is around 530kg, and most of the time it runs for no more than a minute or so, so the brakes don't get too hot.

For a circuit racer, rally or road car I wouldn't dream of going so small and light.

A while back I decided to relocate the fuel tank from under the rear seat area and get it to the front of the car (or get a different tank to go in the engine bay somewhere).

I would have thought the rear would be better for weight distribution? What's the benefit of having it up front?

It probably is slightly better for overall weight distribution when it's at the rear, but I decided to relocate it as;

a) I wanted to bond the tailgate in place. The fuel filler was previously located in the boot floor, so I had to take the tailgate off every time I filled up the fuel tank, which meant the tailgate had to be removable.

b) Front location allows me to get rid of long lengths of fuel delivery and return pipe running through the cockpit - neater and lighter

c) I think I'm going to run the exhaust out through where the fuel tank was previously

d) it pushed me into re-working the whole fuel system. I didn't have a lift pump or a swirl pot previously, and I sometimes thought I was getting fuel starvation. I'll also take the opportunity to foam fill the tank just to be safe.

Getting closer to being ready to fir up the engine for the first time in its new home, but when I came to re-fit the rest of the Jenvey throttle body system, I discovered a rather fundamental issue.........the bracing bar in the engine bay of my Nova is right in the way of the air filter;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/010_zpsatodrimp.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/010_zpsatodrimp.jpg.html)

It isn't feasible to remove the bracing bar, so I need to re-think the air filter system (or run without an air filter, which I don't fancy at all).

Some sort of airbox or a revised air filter that seals around the trumpets may be the answer I think;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/026_zpsu3a1389v.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/026_zpsu3a1389v.jpg.html)

On this particular engine the inlet manifold has quite a shallow angle, so the throttle bodies are not clearing the bracing bars like they did on the previous N/A engine I installed.

I will be interested to see what you end up with. I cam imagine Penske would be expensive.

I did ask a few suppliers (Gaz, AVO and Protech) about making front legs in aluminium. They all declined, and then I bought some off EBAY (no idea of the manufacturer), and they were hugely heavy, compared to steel.

I came to the same conclusion, there's no weight to be saved on a Macpherson strut, the loadings are massive. What sort of piston size are you going to - 41mm?

Hopefully solved the problem of the air filter, with a bit of modification to the bulkhead area and a Reverie carbon fibre airbox, which will be bonded to the trumpets, rather than attaching direct to the throttle bodies;

I need to sort out an air intake hose to the front bumper, as well as a remote air filter.

Original NickJ wiper motor now ditched (and for sale soon);

I think I'm going to locate the lightest possible rear wiper motor from some other car, and mount it THROUGH the windscreen (i.e. inside the car). As the screen is polycarbonate that should work. Most of the modern rear wiper motors seem to pass through the glass of the rear screen.

What's the clearance from the radius on the trumpets to the back wall of the airbox? I recall studying one of Dave Vizards publications that showed the effect of not having enough space around the trumpets and what it did to your airflow/power delivery. I don't think it's been published on the internet, so I can't offer a link to it (yet). Looks good though. And as for the windscreen, yes - drill carefully, go up in small increments. I fitted one to my ASCAR (V8 American Stock Car) that I used to race at Rockingham on the oval back some time in history.... The screen on that is made with coated Makrolon (the stuff they use on ships wheelhouse windows - so is tough!!), and it drills nice starting small. If you try to drill too big too quick, it'll snatch and likely crack out from the hole.

Excellent advice, thanks.

I haven't measured yet on the trumpet clearance inside the airbox, but I have a bit of flexibility to slide it up or down the trumpets.

So I would be interested to learn what would be best. I have 90mm trumpets,and a relatively shallow airbox, so I may not be able to achieve perfection and still get it under the bonnet.

Jezz - I was lucky and had this Reverie airbox on the shelf for years. It came up on ebay badly advertised, and I got it for a very nice price :).

I've had a dig around, and there are a number of schools of thought. One is 1/4 the diameter of the intake - BUT that can affect wave reflection which can affect peak torque.
Another one states that you'd need 1.5" or more, otherwise you'll lose peak power at higher revs. The basis is "as far as you can" that way you don't suffer any affects. The same applies for "behind" the bellmouth - so it's more or less in clear space.

Difficult to do in the confines of a Nova engine bay, though you've chopped out a bit of the firewall, which would have you more space for a deeper box.

I'm still hoping for this year (albeit the hillclimb season ends around October), now I've got the fuel system sorted the list is getting shorter.

Main things outstanding now are ;

Clutch release system (still playing about with hydraulics)

The pedal box needs fitting and plumbing up, as well as a throttle cable making

All the new switchgear inside the car needs wiring up, together with wiring for the new fuel pumps and the battery

I am still waiting for the MBE new dash display system to be ready - SBD promised I would have it for the end of April, but there have been delays in production of it (it's a new design of LCD display). Stupidly I sold all the instrumentation I raced with previously so I could afford to buy this new display, and didn't have a contingency plan for delays.

very Nice. Scottish hill climb will be going the same way next year.

Cant say I agree completely with the use of Hans. Its the old how reasonably practicable does as safe as reasonably practicable have to be. yes it is safer, but is it reasonably practicable for can an entry level racer to be as safe as a high budget racer. when I compare my budget to a high budget single seat hill climb driver its not even close. so how can it be reasonably practicable for me to budget for the same safety devices as them.
the only thing will suffer is the number of people who Join the club/enter the races. which is a shame.

Its like expecting us to have the same spec safety gear as an F1 team because its safer.

I do agree with you, it's a shame there are very few youngsters coming into motorsport (unless they have hugely rich parents). When I started off you could realistically turn up with a very lightly modified road car and a helmet, and you'd be racing.

Safety has to move on but I think it's gone a bit far now, and the start-up costs before you get on track are phenomenal, out of reach for most people.

The safety issue is a big big part of the MSA's role these days. Mandating a Head And Neck Support system has been a long time coming. Dale Earnhardt perished in the Daytona 500 in 2001 due to a basal skull fracture, breaking C1. "but he was doing 200mph" I hear people shout. Steve Bell died at Silverstone the same year, in a Mini Miglia, hitting the pitwall at around 70mph. Same fracture. Same outcome. Others have suffered the same fate over the years, until the HANS (or similar) became mandatory for circuit racing. I raced at Rockingham in the ASCAR/SCSA/Days of Thunder/V8 Trophy (call it what you will!), we were mandated to a head and neck support system back in 2002. There were other devices back then, the Hutchings device was a harness that you wore over your suit and attached to the helmet via D rings. It wasn't as good as a pukka Schroth HANS device, but it was still quite effective. There are other types of "brace" available that are MSA/FIA approved, but all work in the same kind of way. F1 were behind NASCAR in implementing mandatory HANS as it happens....

I've had one since 2003, and won't go on track without it. You can't buy a new neck or spine on eBay.

I do agree with you on the cost of getting into the sport these days, it's horrendous compared to my first time out. I think it cost be about £600 to prep my Nova Sport for the track, which included the rollcage, fire extinguisher, race seat, isolator, my romper suit, and first helmet (which was open face).
My licence was about £33/yr (Race National B), championship registration was £50, BRSCC Racing Membership was about £75, and race entries were £58. If I finished the race I got £15 back from the series.

Nowadays, you have to do the ARDS course to get your licence, that's going to set you back about £600 on it's own. Then there the licence, and all of the mandated safety equipment, before you start to prep the car. I'd estimate the cost of getting on track now has to be around £4K to prep a car for basic road-going type spec. Though you can pick up ready to run bottom bucket cars for around £3K or less if you haggle!

I notice some serious machinery out there in the sprinting and hillclimbing world these days, much more than years ago. Though back then there were a lot of ex-F1 based machines, the odd F3000 based cars too. I see a lot of "redundant" Special Saloons from the 70's and 80's still being used (they can come back to the roundy roundies if they like as the CSCC has a friendly series for them called - oddly enough - Classic Special Saloons & Modsports).

Money makes the world go around... the world go around... (everybody sing...)

Safety should always be first in motor sport.

yes but it has to be practical, affordable, reasonable and available to the people using it. the easiest way to make it safe is to remove the hazard. why don't we ban it all together if safety should come first? next we will have to have air bags, crumple zones, ABS, side impact the list goes on fitted to our nova's just to allow us to race in a legally organised event and without risk to others. you have to draw the line somewhere, health and safety will be the death of us all unless "as far as reasonably practicable" is understood and considered appropriately.

I haven't put them on the scales yet, but I would guess they're about 4 or 5kg each. I will check properly soon, but as they have full carbon inner skins there is scope to reduce the weight further ;).

I will have to sort out some sort of external handles for them, as the regulations require the doors to be able to be opened from outside in case of accident etc. They had TVR-style buttons under the mirrors on the car they were previously on.

Yes, it was that car off EBAY.

The shell is really nice and solid, and has one of Phil Baines's wide arch kits on it, so it's a proper job.

The cage is a full welded-in Custom Cages one, and I have a feeling it's a T45 one as well.

I will have to sell it in due course, I just haven't got the spare cash to keep it myself.

Also just arrived is a 3J Driveline plate LSD, photos to follow.

This replaces the Tran-X LSD's and Quaife ATB which I have had in various gearboxes over the years. I've heard good things about the 3J LSD, if anyone on here has any personal experience of them (especially in a FWD Vauxhall) then let me know.

If it was my situation I'd probably revert to a button & catch solution.

They were bespoke-moulded by a guy who makes professional kayaks, who was apparently asked to make them without door handles as the owner was going to use the TVR-style release buttons under the mirrors.

The truth is there's been nothing to report.

But fingers crossed there is light in the tunnel. Next week my Nova is going off to be finished at A1 Rallysport (owned by Steve Scott, well known for his circuit racing exploits in a huge array of cars, mostly Ford Cosworth).

Steve used to prepare my own Escort Cosworths, so the Nova will be in good hands.

brake pipes
coolant pipes to make in alloy tube

Funnily enough I've just been reading something on the 'Uphill Racers' website, and it appears that I will need a new set of safety belts now.

I've recently bought the newly required HANS device, and a newer set of fireproof overalls. As far as I know the helmet I have is all ok, it should be as it's still current issue in F1!

A mate of mine installed a 2 post lift in his standard height garage (around 8ft high), on which to lift his Porsche Boxter (don't ask)? He apparently had to dig out two holes to accomodate around a cubic meter of concrete for each post! So Colin has a similar amount of digging to do, depending on how deep he wants is to be, I just hope it doesn't turn into an indoor swimming pool :d

My house is at the top of a big hill so I shouldn't have any water table issues. The pit is about 4 foot deep, so it's one you sit or kneel in, it's not for standing up in.

More details of what I'm fitting;

http://www.mech-mate.co.uk/Motor-Pits.html

The eaves height of my garage is about 6' 6", with a very shallow pitch on the roof, so there's definitely no chance of getting a lift in there.

Thanks Harvey, it's been a lot of stress trying to get it sorted, and it will be 5 years since I crashed it come July! Don't know where the time has gone.

I'll aim to do an update later today as I now have the Nova back at home.

Come July it will be 5 years since I crashed it, so it's been a long time to resurrection.

There's a whole bunch of minor jobs to be done now, including a lot of cosmetic tidying after being stored in umpteen different barns, garages and workshops in the near-5 years which have passed since it last ran. Eventually I think it will get stripped to a bare shell once again and re-painted completely. But that can wait.

More importantly, it is essentially ready to go, the engine is sweet, all the electrics are functional, and the suspension is pointing in the right direction.

I am going to have to sort out the gear selection, I'm not happy with the existing arrangement. And I need to create some sort of functional wiper system.

As has always been the case, I have a long list of future developments I want to undertake, which is one of the most fun bits to owning a car like this. However, these really need to wait until I get the car out on track again and learn to drive it all over again.

I can't belive its been 5 years since it had that unfortunate crash. The car has come back better than ever though, it looks amazing already. I think it would be a shame to cover up all that carbon with paint (and adding weight!)
Keep up the good work, its inspiring to see, making me want to get on with mine again.

The carbon won't be getting painted!!!

If I do anything it will be the inside and roof/rear end that gets re-done. I've never been 100% happy with the finish on the inside, and the exterior might as well go black as there's so much carbon now :)

And a little experiment I'm doing to see if 10" Mini wheels might be a way forward for the back end (they're only 0.5" less on overall tyre diameter, and these KAD magnesium ones would save me another 3.5kg);

Really impressive, looking forward to seeing it at Gurston again so let us all know when it is planned.

Do you really need to adjust the roll bar in car? Just thinking there's a job and some weight to be saved if you adjust it manually and make a log of the results / setup.

I do agree there's no need for adjustment, it's one of the things that may get ditched to save weight in the longer term.

I've not had much time to work on the car, but I did start on a few things today. I'm fitting the polycarbonate windows into the carbon fibre doors, and sorting the rear screen as well.

For ages I've wanted to replace this monstrosity;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1901_zpsp2lcnidz.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1901_zpsp2lcnidz.jpg.html)

With this which I've had sitting on the shelf for years;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1903_zps5afhrara.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1903_zps5afhrara.jpg.html)

Turned out to be a far bigger job than it should have been as the bolt going through the bush had seized solid. It's not easy cutting through a titanium bolt which I'd used to secure it!

But job now done and it looks a whole lot better, as well as saving more weight;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1904_zpsbrujpak8.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1904_zpsbrujpak8.jpg.html)

I've got a few other unexpected things to tackle, I found that the pipe from the sump which circulates oil through the breather system was going into fresh air. Unfortunately there aren't enough outlets on the breather tank so I'm going to have to find a way to add another one. The tank is carbon fibre so it isn't as straightforward as it would be if it was metal.

The other rather fundamental problem is the exhaust is way too loud. For some reason the guy who crafted a lovely new exhaust for it decided to only put one silencer box in, and it really is offensively loud. I'm going to have to add another silencer and the only place I can fit one is behind the rear axle. It looks like there will be enough room but it's a delay I could do without.

I've also discovered that because my engine is lowered (and of course the suspension sits low), the BTB exhaust manifold is perilously close to the ground;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1905_zpsrymvoay1.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1905_zpsrymvoay1.jpg.html)

There's no obvious solution to that one I can think of (bigger wheels and higher suspension are not options).

It's a KAD engine brace for a Mini (proper Mini). Very nicely made, like all the KAD stuff.

Short of finding a manifold that sits tighter to the sump i don't know what to do about that.

I've just taken my car down from static noise test 97dB to 82dB just by repacking the back box with Acoustafil. Might be worth investigating if yours needs repacking.

New engine brace looks very light, I think it would look better with the misalignment spacers the proper way round even if you don't need any misalignment. Or better still, the allen head on the RJ side on the gearbox and do away with the spacer.

As mike says, bond an alloy outlet into the carbon, will be the easiest way.

As for the zooster, can you not run a 4x1 layout instead of the 2x2 stack? that will gain you some room, i know its a BTB one so would be the best around but if your having to pack another silencer in, it might be worthwhile getting the manifold copied into a more height friendly design. In regards to the 2nd box, can you not fit it in at the front of the tunnel where a normal nova cat would be located?

I did think about that but it's a lot of extra work, and I'm not even sure if the regulations allow the exhaust to be routed inside the car (even if it's then boxed in).

Fair points Ben, but I think if I was going to the trouble of having a whole new manifold and system done (maybe even in titanium one day) then I might be better off doing it with a dry sump system installed, which would let everything work better.

Hi. Yes, I plan to be out this year, but the issues with the exhaust and the gear change are holding me up. Pretty much everything else is done.

My aim was to give it a shakedown at Santa Pod and then do a Hillclimb at Gurston Down at the end of the season.

A Vectra C in the local breakers yard kindly donated its cable gearchange set-up, which I attached to a spare F10 'box to try out;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1949_zpseifacvmu.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1949_zpseifacvmu.jpg.html)

It seems to work rather nicely, so I shall now start trial fitting it in my Nova. There's a lot of stuff around my gearbox turret which may need relocating, water pipes, header tank, oil recirculation tank are all contesting the limited space in that area.

This is the old gear linkage I removed;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/IMG_1950_zpsvmadzjof.jpg (http://s285.photobucket.com/user/hillclimbescort/media/IMG_1950_zpsvmadzjof.jpg.html)

When I look at that I can't help thinking it's no surprise that the change quality is poor, the route it has to follow with straight rods is so convoluted and indirect. Plus it has to go through a bulkhead tube with a nylon bush at each end. The potential for wear and misalignment must be huge.

I'm hoping that cables are the way to go.

Ultimately the weak point is the 4 mount points on the lever housing itself; you wanna fill that with as much tigerseal / solid bush it as possible. IMO you want it further back than I have it here, but the handbrake then must be relocated. The vauxhall cables are long & the route will determine how good / if at all it works; I went bottom right under the rack next to the clutch pedal to allow them to come up over a greater distance.

https://s22.postimg.org/4n42rym1d/09.04.15_B_.JPG.jpg

If you want f off & die precision (not that it really needs it) you can go RJ if you do the work, this then however puts a greater strain on the shifter mount points (weak link becomes weaker...)

https://s24.postimg.org/6uxbb2ead/P1080417.jpg

I'd recommend a mod of the gate to ease 3rd into 2nd & just getting into 1st generally else you'll fuss with how precise you have to be ~ you can do it to 5th also with no ill effects.

Thank-you Broadghost, very useful photos and information.

No handbrake at at all in my car, so nothing to worry me there.

Is is that a Vectra gear lever housing you're using? I've been told that the Astra H one has a shorter throw. Maybe other models are the same.

Have you done done anything to modify the throw on yours? I have an Astra H road car and the throw between each gear shift seems a long way.

Your gearbox turret is different to mine, what car did that come from?

BRoadGhost
17-06-17, 10:52 PM
I'd focus mainly then on optimising shifter location in the car meaning the cables have a good route.

Yes; I have also shortened the gear lever above the pivot point (maybe 25MM) and below (about 8MM); makes it short as you'd expect. ~ Below pivot shortening only effects up down motion not side to side.

You are right in spotting the other design of turret, but I have removed counterweights & reworked it so cables bolt up. I have had the plastic end pop off shifting hard (didn't ever want this again!) It's from a 2002 Vectra as I'm aware. TBH most important thing is all moving parts are oiled to F. Turret is internally sprung to return as is the shifter, I've just taken the spring off my shifter as it felt too strong returning & hindered 3rd into 2nd.

Does anyone have a tubular exhaust manifold for the 16v small block which isn't made by BTB or Tony Law?

if they do I'd be interested in borrowing/seeing photos of it installed in terms of sump clearance.

Thanks.

I'm still working on the cable gear change conversion, that is also being complicated by the fact that my engine has been lowered in the bay.

I will take a picture of mine when I get a chance but don't think it will be any good as it's not that tight to the sump

Cable gearchange conversion now (mostly) complete, and working very nicely right away (I haven't tinkered with it at all, and it's selecting all the gears very nicely).

I'm sure I will play about with things to shorten the throw, to stiffen up the gear shifter itself, and to prevent the cables detaching when shifting in anger, but it's immediately better than what I had in there;

Thanks - that's an interesting solution. I think space might be too tight to achieve that routing on mine. I've spoken to Matt at Simpson exhausts and he's confident he can design and make something which sits much closer to my sump and will solve the problem.

I borrowed a Tony Law exhaust manifold this week and it's nearly identical to the BTB one I have now, so that won't help me at all.

If they do make you a manifold maybe talk first about the coupling. Mine is a slip joint so the whole system has to come off to remove the manifold. It doesn't take long, but a V-band would make life easier at times.

Good thought, thanks Craig.

As my system is is too loud anyway, I may end up getting them to make a whole new manifold and system, I've got a V band on mine already and it does make life easier.

Thanks for the PM regarding Ebay, I was not aware of the problems you mentioned.

Bracing up the gear shift lever as there's a reasonable amount of flex. I think it will need a bit more stiffening as well;

You can shave off that white mid bit from the lever too if you like.

There's another design of cables, with a bright yellow end rather than the white-ish end. I remember looking at them both side by side and thinking the yellow looked better and less slop although I can't remember why.

Thanks.

Ever since the subframe for the front clamshell was made it's annoyed me, it's not very easy to line things up, and the 2 pins it clipped onto were thoroughly dangerous. I decided it would make far more sense, as well as being lighter, if I relocated the towing eye and utilised that as the main means of support;

Who can spot the recycled Nova component I've used in the last photo above?

I'll neaten it all up and weld everything properly soon.

Yes, I cut off the counterweights. I haven't used it on the road yet, but I spoke to a lot of people and consensus seems to be that there's no need for them on a track-type car.

The battery is lithium, here's a link to the specs;

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/batteries/super-b-b10p-lithium-ion-battery

I did not pay that sort of money for it!!

It's been machined out of billet aluminium and titanium, so it's definitely not heavy! The switch panel (like many of the bits on this Saxo) has been machined out of engineering plastic of some kind.

It really had to be bought. Price was sensible I think, it's so bespoke that a lot of people were put off. The level of engineering and amount of time spent on modifying it is mind blowing.

It was the cable shifter which really made me pursue it, but at some point I'm hoping the alloy front hubs might find their way onto my Nova.

They are 100mm PCD hubs - from what I could gather he had a load of suitable wheels, so he just made the hubs to suit.

Yeah I don't think any part of the shifter's too heavy looking at it; the base should be strongest & it's a fair height. The plastic is probably nylon; whole thing looks really good with the bearings etc should last forever.

Bespoke billet knuckles would be a great thing to run; I've modified mine so much that starting again from scratch would be the next stage.

That rose jointed ARB droplink onto the lower arm allowing driveshaft to float through says it all. Absolutely 1st rate design & execution; bet those knuckles are half the weight & twice the strength of the o.e.

I have no idea on the billet rears other than it's a hogged out solid piece that size & design to make it strong enough?

I've just removed one of the alloy front hubs and they don't disappoint. Superb engineering.

Sadly they don't quite weigh in at half the weight of standard, but they are a little bit lighter, roughly 500g per side. Unsprung weight, so it will be worthwhile.

As for the rear ones, I haven't yet taken them off the car, but I have no plans to use them on my car anyway, Hillclimb/sprint regulations require me to retain the beam arrangement, I can't have independent operation.

8valve-craig
11-08-17, 09:41 PM
Not sure how your regs read, but mine state the same design of rear suspension. Doesn't say you can't fabricate a new beam, adjustable and out of a lighter material. Agree though that bespoke independent is out of the question for any class a Nova can be competitive in.
