Hi all, some people might remember seeing my nova on here but hey ho.

Took it off the road at the end of summer last year with plans to build a high spec small block xe. Had a change of mind as a couple of my mates were going bigger power in there cars so thought id join them. Have been tinkering with it since Christmas, mainly just stripped it all down so I could get cracking with it.

My plans now are an LET on phase 2, maybe 3 but will decide when the time comes.
Engine will be fully rebuilt, hopefully bored out, forged pistons etc etc.

Exterior wise, it will stay the same, wheels powder coated anthracite, cut out for the front mount and smooth my rear bumper to match the front. Ideas will change over the process though.
Rear of the interior will be stripped so the bare paint is on show with the front section still be slightly road going with carpets, my leather interior etc. other interior ideas will be getting the front section of the cage, battery in the boot and carbon fibre panels.

It will be a road car but a slight track look to it, nothing ott. Will be looking to use it on the track too if I get time to use it out there.

Money is a big factor at the mo, but ill get parts when I can afford to, not in a big rush as i've given my self till next summer at the least to have most of it done.

Here's a link to my old WIP. How it was looking when I finished it last year.
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90662 (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90662)

and here are pics of my progress.

I started off by removing the engine, easy enough task.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC01874Medium.jpg

I then stripped the interior out and anything else that needed to come off, pretty much everything. haha.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00032Medium.jpg

Bought myself a chassis plating kit so towed it over to a local body man I know so he could do the work. Was impressed with his welding but I think he over charged me a tadge, not one to argue so I paid.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02064Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02086Medium.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02089Medium.jpg

Once I got the car back I started on lowering the tie bars and strengthening the lower arms, bought some 25mm box section and some round bar. I cut a template of the lower arm and then outlined this onto some sheet metal, after I cut them out I welded them to the arms. after this I cut the round bar to the correct size and bolted everything together.

I will be having all my suspension parts powder coated but this wont need to be done until im further down the road and finished with most of the mock up.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02046Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02047Medium.jpg

Sourced my self an f28 box and the gear box spacer, drilled and tapped the holes to fit the gearbox mount. While I had nothing else to do I thought id make a rose jointed linkage whilst I had to modify the linkage for the f28. came out alright, but haven’t tested it on the car yet.

Wanted to get everything in place for so I know what has to be cut and moved so I don’t have to do it once it’s all painted.
Next was to fit the engine and box, for this I had to go out and buy an engine crane, the crane I brought is fairly old and doesn’t fold down. With this in mind to go and fetch it I had the previous owner cut the legs off and remove the jib. Once I got it back I made up some angle iron plates and fitted them to the crane. With laziness and it being too time consuming I only drilled one hole for a bolt on each leg…..this turned out to be a big mistake.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02138Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02139Medium.jpg
So once I knew it couldn’t take the weight I decided I had to drill more holes for bolts. I then did so, so I had a bolt coming in from sideways. “Result” im thinking, lifts engine up and moves it towards the car. A massive twang and the one bolt going in sideways had snapped. I was using m10 bolts….oops. So a new bolt was fitted and another bolt coming in from the top, this has held up for know. Even though it’s still a bit sketchy.
Too test to see if it could take the weight my mate jumped up to check.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02140Medium.jpg

The rubber mount needed to fit the new engine was still attached to the old metal mount, didn’t have a vice to undo the bolts so the next best thing---
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02141Medium.jpg

On with fitting the engine, seeing how my engine crane wasn’t too safe I decided it had to go in from the front. Cut the slam panel out and phoned my big grizzly mate Karl to come help with the fitting. Got it up and in so far then Karl man handled the thing into place.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02142Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02146Medium.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02148Medium.jpg
Took a while to get it lined up but was bolted up on the o/s/f mount and the rear box mount.

Karl’s motor below.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02149Medium.jpg

Acquired myself another garage to rent, so happens to be directly opposite to mine. Bargain.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02157Medium.jpg

Fitted up a turbo for the mock up purpose as I had nothing else to do.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02167Medium.jpg

Started to save some money as I the next step was to buy a welder and mount the f28mount. Found a 2nd hand one on eBay which I drove 2 and half hours to collect.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02183Medium.jpg
Was in good working condition. The exterior was grubby so I sorted that out.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02189Medium.jpg

Painted it Arden blue. Once I had my fun with making it look nice I got the engine level and welded the mount on.

Started to strip the rest of the interior, dash out and then the loom.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02166Medium.jpg

Didn’t realize how big a nova loom was!!

Like new original white paint behind the dash.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02170Medium.jpg

Bought some more goodies as they came up cheap on eBay.
Cam belt cover with holes cut out for vernier pulleys, a 3inch downpipe and a rear strut brace.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02168Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02211Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02171Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02216Medium.jpg
Needed to buy some more parts for the mock up, got hold of 2nd hand enlarged stainless AFM to turbo pipe. Went about trying to fit it, cut some of the front panel but there was no way it was ever going to fit properly.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02295Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02266Medium.jpg

Sold that one and bought a silicone one, much better fit.
Then I ordered a 3inch top hat, might be overkill but I like it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02296Medium.jpg

Onto the radiator position, moved it over and forward slightly, marked my holes then drilled. Still have to secure it at the top but will do that when I have a bit of time
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02300Medium.jpg

I phoned up forge motorsport to order my intercooler, was told they had a 3week waiting time for the coolers to be made, 2weeks went by and it arrived. (which was Thursday just gone) all excited I opened up my package to see that they had made the wrong one, I wanted a type 8 with 63mm outlets and they made me a type 4 with 63mm outlets. Mega pixxed off!!! Phoned them on Friday and explained that ill try make it work over the weekend if not they can have it back and I want the one I ordered to start with.

As I want the cooler mounted in the front bumper I thought it was best to make it fit in there first then cut the lower panel so it fits perfect.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02416Medium.jpg

Had to cut the lower panel to recess the cooler back, marked where I had to cut.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02422Medium.jpg

Cut it out and tested the cooler in place, had to fettle it in a few places but got it to fit the best that it ever was.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02423Medium.jpg

Offered the bumper up and it fouled a few places, trimmed the bumper a bit and still couldn’t get it to fit correctly. Main problem is that the outlets are too close to the bumper, the type 8 which I had ordered have the outlets higher so they’ll fit better with the bumper.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02425Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02429Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02428Medium.jpg

As you can see in the pics there’s lots more room higher up the bumper so ill get them to pick the cooler up on Monday and hopefully get the correct one back.

That’s it for now, more will be updated when I pull my finger out and I have more money.

Thanks for looking.

Good work, will be keeping an eye on this! Always liked the look of your car and you are going to seriously love LET power.

Make sure you get a Diff in that gearbox and an equal length driveshaft setup for extra driveability!

thanks for all the comments, means alot.

keith i will be definately getting a diff and the equal length set up. ideally want to do it once and once only so try and get it all right first time. haha.

brainsnova- yeh your rite, aparently he has a bad back. lol

once i get the correct cooler and mount it all i should be ready to take the engine/box back out and start on bodywork.

bit of an update, i sent the wrong intercooler back on tuesday and got my correct one made and delivered to me on thursday. top work by the forge boys.

new cooler.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02434Medium.jpg

as you can see in the pic, the outlets are much higher now. only problem i got is that i cut my scrap bumper up to fit around the other cooler, no big deal but would have been nice to see it how i want it to be like.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02436Medium.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02438Medium.jpg

so onto mounting it correctly and back far enough to get the bumper to fit, i cut so much off the back of the bumper it was unreal, it still wouldnt fit over the cooler correctly so i had to recess the recess.:tard: . doing this has made my radiator go back further but im hoping all will be well.:) .

cut my piece of metal i had made to the shape of the recess, wasnt perfect as ive never been one for straight lines. it did the job so i welded it on.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02437Medium.jpg

felt like putting all the front end on so i could see it all together but couldnt be bothered. got the grille out though.lol
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02440Medium.jpg

then onto making my boost pipes. cut down the 2 90degree bends from the cooler so they would fit, after that i taped up my stainless pipe so it didnt get scratched. measured how far up i needed to cut it then cut it.:d
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02441Medium.jpg

did the same for the remaining section
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02443Medium.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02444Medium.jpg

still got the turbo to cooler hoses to cut and make up but is looking tricky, have got a 63mm to 51mm reducing elbow and a 51mm 90 deg elbow. just a case of cutting them down and hoping for the best.

might go do that tommorow to get it out the way. i should be able to start taking it apart to get the engine back out, dont think ive missed anything that needs mocking up with the engine in have i??

thanks for looking

small update, made a mounting bracket to hold the intercooler in place. Used part of the middle section i cut from the metal bumper support of the front bumper.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02450Medium.jpg

cut some bits off it and filed it smooth, then i cut 2 tabs to weld onto the strip of metal. I did this and ended up with this.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02451Medium.jpg

it will be painted, but does it look too gash? bolts will be cut down when i get round to it.

Onto the boost hoses from the turbo to cooler, think ive figured it out except the hoses are a bit tight up against the chassis leg/engine bay. Got dark so couldnt finish up.

more to come.

Might be better with a alloy straight bar mate, i would make sure the 90 bends don't rub on the front panel

AlexW
05-10-09, 11:05 PM
I would check the metal tabs and stuff arent touching the boost pipes or anything.

And as scott said maybe a bit of alloy bar with some neat holes in would look good imo (Maybe go down a industral estate and beg lol)

brucer
06-10-09, 09:01 AM
I know about th tabs and hoses cheers guys. :-).

How would I weld to the alloy bar though? If the mounting holes were turned 90degrees I could perhaps do that method and bolt it to it.

AlexW
06-10-09, 10:57 AM
With the bits that go up onto what would be the alloy bar you could just have a go at doing a neat twist in the metal or somthing.

I see what you mean, so I could still bolt the down pieces to the alloy bar.

Think I may pop down to a metal stockholders and see what I can get.

nice one, will have to keep an eye out for your WIP.

do you guys think 2x 7inch cooling fans will be enough to cool it down?
8inch will be too big and will foul the intercooler. would like to buy one and find out if 7inch will fit on, dont want to buy them and they wont be keeping it all cool.

EDIT: just looked through benns WIP and he's got 7inches...fans i mean.

But have possible plans for A/C so need the extra room for a second radiator plus its a snowplough so need the room.

small update, couldnt find any alloy strip to make as my intercooler bracketry, so i had an inch x 850mm 2mm thick metal cut for me. To save time with cutting the smaller tabs to weld to it, i cut the old ones off and welded them in postion. looks much more neater than the other one. also cut some racey looking holes.lmao.

The FMIC you have there mate, is it the same size as a Frontera intercooler or is it larger?

Would say its alot thicker than the frontera one... And i think you'll struggle for room..

Nova_Tek

Thought it looks a bit bigger. I know its not going to be easy Benn but never say never.

Will have to think around it. For starters what is the minimum size/spec for a LET intercooler?

brucer
09-10-09, 11:14 PM
Hope so benn

Tek-the coolers 80mm thick, would have thought the frontera ones thinner. Whats the standard LET cooler like? Sure its smallish as I saw a nova down at the fast show that had one mountd above the gearbox, was very crammed an didnt look the best.

Would give you room for your condenser then.

They are tiny. So any things good. The std one could be fitted over one side of the rad, like most peeps do with the oil cooler.

thanks gunny, i am too.

this condenser is from an agila/wagon r. found it over on ebay, its only 37cm wide so pretty small. I presume you will be having the pipes made up for it?

back to my project.

didnt do much today, test fitted my 7inch fan. does touch the IC bracket i made but isnt causing any harm. tried the bumper on again and it all still fits. phew. have got a 2nd to go on aswell.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02455.jpg

onto the hoses from the turbo then, not 100percent happy with it but cant see how it can get any better. if im not happy when i put it back on when the engines built up again then ill consider sorting it out.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02456.jpg

Now that all my mocking up is done i stripped it all down and put all my bits away tidy.:)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02459.jpg

also took other small things off, such as the heater blower, wipers and linkage etc.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02463.jpg

re-fitted my rose jointed linkage. is a tad stiff as its been stood for a few months. only thing im worried about is that when you put it in gear from inside the car and take it back out, it wont centralise again. is it only the gearbox that makes it come back central?? will have to lube up my rose joints again.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02465.jpg

my one heater matrix outlet seems to come out right behind the inlet, is it ment to be like this? cant see how a hose would fit on with it like this.

That heater matrix pipe needs to be cut down mate ;) dont go too short though and try not to let it lose its shape.

Looking good keep it up :thumb:

This is correct, also see that lug on the inlet in the pic, well get the grinder on it mate, also worth fitting solid monts (maybe just rear one, if you want less vibration) as well.

Straight bar looks loads better mate, getting there:thumb:

thanks guys, solid mounts would be good, just that with the set of three i wouldnt be able to use the gearbox one as thats the same as the o/s engine mount...

i havnt bent the clutch cable hole yet, can i do it once the engines out or is it best when the engines in so i can see how far to bend it??

thanks for the info, helps if i miss anything.:thumb:

I bent the matrix pipe on mine, down and to the right, on my prevoious xe I cut it back and it chewed through the pipe every couple of months to the point there I ended up keeping a spare hose and the tools to fix under the spare wheel in the boot

Should of filed it down mate ;)

this condenser is from an agila/wagon r. found it over on ebay, its only 37cm wide so pretty small. I presume you will be having the pipes made up for it?

Nice find Bruce, I had a look at a Corsa B condenser and its mahoosive 60cm wide. That Aglia condenser looks like a perfect size for the Nova and would allow for more room to play with :thumb: gonna +rep you for that mate

As for the heater matrix AFAIK most peple cut it by a couple cm's.

bit of an update, which isnt really an update more of a rant. here goes...

my engine load leveller hasnt arrived yet so have posponed getting the engine out. Will phone up the company and bollock them as its been over a week.

Fitted my rose jointed gear linkage to test out again, got it working so it goes into all gears. Even though it was trial and error for lining it up, does the F28 have a rubber grommet like on the small block gear boxes to lock it in first or which ever gear?? can only see a yellow plunger with a spring under it.

heres a small vid. still a work in progress.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/th_MOV00510.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/?action=view&current=MOV00510.flv)

In the mean time i thought id deal with the corsa b wiper linkage i bought. Taking into account what benn had done to his, i followed a similar route in extending it so the mechanism would line up with the holes on the scuttle. Cut the mech in half and with a all mighty "PING" my jigaw spat its blade. Presumed it had only broken the blade, but no!! it broke the housing that the blade sits in, so now my jigsaw is broken.:( . placing the mechanism up into the scuttle i tacked a bit of metal to re-join it in the correct position. got this done then my generator cut out, goes to re-start and it starts and runs for like 5-10secs then cuts out. All four rubber mountings are broken aswell so thats something else i got to look at. im not too sure if the running issue is due to only running back on petrol, i was using a petrol/diesel mix from work, which it may have got addicted too. couldnt finish the welding on the mechanism so gave up and went home. one of those weekends.

further more will come....

That yellow thing with spring on it, if standing in front of the car move the linkage over to the right, push on the yellow thing and move the linkage to the left slightly. That yellow plunger will slot in and hold the linkage. then just get somone to hold the gearstick over to the left and do the pinchbolt up

Looks like you're going about the conversion the right way mate.

I would check that when you close the bonnet down the catch doesn't go into the rad.

You don't have to bend the clutch cable hole you can just chop the end to make it point different. That way you'll reduce the risk of bending the bulkhead.

Chop the matrix pipe down as people have said.

F28 linkage setup is a barsteward! definately a 2 man job and plenty of patience. Best done tho once you're running. I found I could get all gears when on the driveway but once on the road it was different.

Don't forget your oil cooler. Worth fitting on the let.

Great work so far mate, it's been a good read.

I would highly recommend fitting a new complete locking/slam panel though, you have no need at all to have a removeable slam panel with the standard turbo. It's better to keep as much strength at the front end as possible as it can flex alot with the torque.

Have a look at my thread at how to modify your turbo inlet so you don't have to cut anything from the slam. It looks more factory fit then!

When I said check the catch I meant the hook part then when you pull the cable still keep the bonnet connected to the slam until you pull the hook out. It can sometimes catch the fins on top of the rad.

The Simps

As keith said. If you're planning on running the std catch and cable you will need more strength on the slam panel. If you're running bonnet pins its not so important.

thanks guys, the main reason i cut the front panel out was due to my engine crane being total poop and didnt want to chance the engine falling from such a height.

bonnet wise i did want to get a carbon fibre one which i would have the flush fit aero catches. Saying that i do like this bonnet as i cut the 3 holes in to it for something different. problem is i wont be able to fit the aero catches to this one as it will look mucho stupid with the holes. theres always a fibreglass bonnet...

more strength would be needed to keep the original catch as i wouldnt like the bonnet flying up at top end speeds. Going to go sit in the corner and have a think.:thumb:

I kept mine on my red one. You will need to trim it tho for the afm to turbo hose if you don't chop and re-angle the inlet.

If you're going to leave the slam panel whole you will need to have the middle bar that goes to the lower panel removed or detachable or you'll struggle to get the rad in.

have started to strip the car of all underseal now, have so far only done the o/s arch. this has taken me a fair time for stripping off the old underseal, my genny is having problems again but think im on the right lines of fixing it.

i took it all down to bare metal

then gave it a dust coating of etch primer as i heard this is vital for it to etch properly into the metal. then another coat on top of that.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02561.jpg

once this had dried i seam sealered all the seams

after this had dried i gave it a two coats of comma underseal, once its dried it goes a cool matt black colour:)

then proceeded with two coats of blue hammerite.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02552.jpg

atleast thats one down, got my old bumper down from the rafters to inspect it. like many old gte bumpers it dips in on the right hand side if you can see it, ive heard that if you heat it up/put it in a hot bath it will go back to the original shape. anyone know if this is true? can imagine it wont do it with the filler on it so will have to dig it out.

Etch primer promotes the paint to strip better to bare metal, if your under sealing its not really needed.

Etch primer promotes the paint to strip better to bare metal, if your under sealing its not really needed. WHAT etch is always a good idea on a nova its used on bare metal as it ETCH'S in to it and sticks better than say high build primer. The acid forces the zinc down into the top couple of molecules of the steel and helps stop rust from getting any worse.

Etch primer promotes adhesion. Making primer and or paint grip and stick better.
If your undersealing straight over the top it really wont matter.

great work mate keep it up.I took off all my underseal last year.It took me ages and i was layed under it on axle stands so really can appreciate how much graft your putting into it.I found a hot air gun and an inch wide chisel were the best to remove it.Good luck.

Nice sounds like what I'm looking for, I want it to be dry rather then sticky/tacky. I've used Waxoyl Schultz in a rattle can (black can) that's also good and gives a slight lumpy finish bit like stone chip protection. Gonna keep the underside black anyway. Don't think I'm gonna striip off the original stuff, just gonna clean it up well and inspect the underside and inside of the car for rot with a screwdriver and hammer. Any areas that need buliding up will be done so and then a full coat over with protection and waxoyl in all holes.

back again, the car now has been moved over to a friends farm due to complaints from neighbours about my genny. the progress has been alot better as i have more space and power on tap, unlike genny.

just like the previous arch i stripped it all down to bare metal, etch primed, seam sealed, undersealed and hammerited.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02561Small.jpg

with the urge to get it done and back to my garage, this arch only took me 2 days compared to 2weeks like the other one.lol.

have near enough completed the n/s/r arch. have only got to hammerite it and it will be done. i gave up on the o/s/r arch today as my bulb blew in my light i was using and the temperature was 1.5degrees!! will go out there tomorrow and hopefully get it done.

hey all, update for this week.

without wanting to ruin the new underseal and paint underneigth the car i thought i best buy a new cage so i can weld in the spreader plates. a brand new 2nd hand 6 point omp cage came up for sale on here from novasam20. we came to a deal so i went and collected it. eventually got the cage in the car, the front section had to be cut in half as it wouldnt fit in my vec.

picture of test assemble in my garage. its obligatory.lol
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02590.jpg

on with removal of the old cage, which is now for sale.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02605-1.jpg

put the rear half of the new cage in, didnt surprise me that it didnt fit. the cage is made for a nova that hasnt got a sunroof or a headlining. no biggie.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02608-1.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02606-1.jpg

cut the front feet off with plenty spare to adjust correctly, welded in the spreader plate that makes a small box section behind the front seats. positioned the cage to how it would sit in the car, cut the legs to length and welded them back on. The rear feet wouldnt sit correctly either, cut these off and used the inch and a half i cut from the front legs to over lap and join the rear feet back on. welded the spreader plates onto the back arches too.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02614.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02620.jpg

the cage didnt come with bolts for the rear cage feet so i went and bought some nice allen headed bolts, bolted it all down then.

once i got this done i fitted the front section, i placed the dash in position to make sure it misses.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02610.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02613.jpg

welded in the spreader plates for the front section and bolted it down.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02623.jpg

all i have to address now is where the front section was cut in half, im thinkining about joining it just how the front and rear section connect as it will be so much easier to fit when i come to fit it all again. the cut is where the drivers sunvisor is.what do you all think?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02611.jpg

also the door bars...i presume there too long so they can be cut to length when you've decided where you want them. where do i want them? like so?

these ones are to be welded onto the rear section of the cage for the door bars, the front section has a smaller diameter tubing. might consider fabricating them but knowing me theyll come out poo.

thanks for reading

how come you didnt cut the spreader plates from the bottom of the legs and then cut the vertical legs to length then weld the plates or new plates back on so you dont have a join line round the leg and it looks like its meant to be that length?

also what is this car being used for with having this cage in?

Also lol you can get what they call slip joints which is a piece of tube that is a perfect slide over the tube and then bolt through to secure it and that would probably work for the front where the sun visor is, il try find a pic for you to what i mean

Edit:- here is the link for the joint you want, its only £12 http://www.customcages.co.uk/roll-cages/accessories/bolt-in-sleeve-kit

umm...im not too sure why i didnt do that.haha. its going to be mainly for the road but i will use it out on the track too. yeh thats how the front and rear section join together so think ill order one up.

onto more progress, had been laying on my back all day stripping the underseal off from the rear of the car. must have been 4/5hrs in total. it had paid off tho as i managed to get it in primer and put seam sealer on.

positioned the door bars in place, cut them to length and welded them all on.

had today off work so did a bit more on the car, was at the autosport show yesterday and ordered some bushes and braided brake lines from rally design. should arrive by wednesday.:)

gave the underside another coat of hammerite, should be enough i reckon.

then proceeded with stripping off the soundeadening from inside the car. came up easy with a heat gun.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02657.jpg

then went about fitting the rear beam. got it all in place without the springs to start with, then fitted one of my irmscher softstars that are normally fitted. when i went over a bump, the o/s/r wheel would catch the arch. so i heated up the paint on the arch then hammered and dolleyed the arch lip flat.

all was ok with the wheel now, but ive encounted another future problem. ill be running coilovers and i imagine these will hit the wheel. i run 205/40/16 tyres so will have to get some 195/45/16's for that little bit more clearance.

can someone measure up the diameter of a rear coilover, pretty please.:d

with not much else that i could be bothered with, i welded up the indicator hole on the o/s wing. gave it a little filler.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02659.jpg

will have a little update for tomorrow id imagine.

todays update, isnt much but every little helps.

done some more work on the wing, kind of happy with the finish, but im sure it could be better. will let the bodyshop sort it if they arnt happy. ran out of masking tape so couldnt do a decent square to prime it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02669.jpg

started back on the engine bay. got as much as i could done. have run out of sanding discs so couldnt do any more. have got the main lines of the filler sorted on the inner wings. will have to get some finishing filler to sort the imperfections. gave it a bit of primer to give it a more uniform look, even though it will be coming off again to finish it all.

havnt updated this in a couple of weeks due to being busy and the weather cold, so heres a small update.

got on with removing the doors, did the common trick with the bonnet stay and in 10mins they were off.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02710.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02711.jpg

have now put the doors into storage until i need to work on them.

then set about removing the headlining, came off pretty easy, except for the roof handles being a pain to come off.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02721.jpg

had a bit of a play with my intercooler recess, was real untidy so got the grinder out and smoothed it off with that. gave it a bit of filler to help it.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02713.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02726.jpg

ive decided that ill strip all the paint off the inside of the car to save rubbing it down as that could take hours to get it smooth with it having many layers of paint on it. i started using nitromors as i presumed this would be the best stuff, it just takes so long to work and doesnt always strip all the paint off. only other stuff i could find in halfords was cellulose thinners and doesnt say it would strip paint off. so will have to hunt around for some stripper/thinner that will aid me in a quicker strip.

Good work dude, wherr are you running the battrey cabling and bits? As theres no holes in the bulk head at all...

What are you doing with the head lining?

brucer
14-02-10, 02:04 PM
as the battery is being mounted in the boot i was planning on having the cable/s come out lower down the bulkhead. ive seen on yours that your rocker cover breather goes into the bulkhead and down the inner wing to hide it, im most likely going to have to make a hole back in it or figure out a different routing to hide it. i got a bit eager with the welder.lol

with the headlining i am buying the one wilson_sri had for sale recently, which will hopefully go with my leather seats and flocked dash when i have that done.

update 14/03/10.

progress has been slow, had to repair my vec as the steering rack had burst. hasnt set me too far back though.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02731.jpg

im still on bodywork and paint stripping atm with the nova.

decided to have a go at fitting my new rear panel, was getting fed up with it lying around and the fact it would cost me to get it fitted. reason im fitting a new one is because it doesnt look good how it is so want it to look tidyer.

this is how it started off, somebody had previously replaced the rear panel with a piece of sheet metal. whoever did the job didnt want it to come off, ever!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02667.jpg

went and got my mates 9inch grinder and cut the majority of the old panel out, i then tidyd it up using my 4inch cutter. some of the metal was a bit worse for ware so i cut it out.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02732.jpg

this is the new panel, its a pattern part but fit doesnt look too bad.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02734.jpg

placed it up there to get the idea of how it fitted and to see what id have to modify to fit it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02744-1.jpg

after a while i got it somewhere near, fitted the tailgate back on to make sure its in line with the catch.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02756.jpg

offered up the rear bumper to ensure that lined up nicely aswell.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02749.jpg

once all was ok i welded on the panel, i then ground down the welds and started smoothing out the panel. still got to sand the filler down.

i had made one error though, i only ever checked that the tailgate closed on the first click of the catch and not the second. when i came to close the boot it would butt out on the c pillars. to get around this i got a block of wood on the inside of the panel and used my trusty hammer to massage it outwards. the boot now closes perfect.

following on from the previous page i was still trying to find an easy solution for removing all the paint from inside the car. i went and bought a 80grit sanding disc for my angle grinder. it does a decent job, much quicker than a knotted wheel for the grinder. got the boot area and the rear arches down to bare metal.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02733.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02780-1.jpg

put a bit of zinc primer on it to stop it rusting until i make it a bit smoother and ready for paint.

around the tailgate where the seal and headlining had been holding moisture, it had got a bit crusty. wire wheeled it down and used kurust on these areas to sort it.

ahh ok. i think thats fairly cheap tbh. my motor factors wanted 45quid!! cheapest ive found on ebay is 2.15 a metre iirc. i only need like 6metres max for my fuel lines so will be around 12/13 pound plus postage. search for copper gas/water pipe. should come up.

Well i only need MAX. of 3 metres (even that will be a bit much) as I will be using the feed pipe as the return and will just replace the feed line. So from a motorfactors it should be around 6-8 quid (much better)

whats wrong with priming all of the inside? i can see more pros than cons for doing so, especially the state it was in.

also its an epoxy primer, i new i wouldnt be painting it straight away and didnt want it to start rusting before i got round to paint.

todays progress----

today i set about spraying the paint and laquer to the inside of the car.
mixed the paint to the correct ratios then gave the inside 3 coats of subaru sonic blue (world rally blue or 555 blue).

let this flash off then i applied my laquer. gave it around 5 coats. im quite impressed with the finish i got considering the sprayer i was using and im no professional painter. the conditions didnt help either but it will do.

sorry for the bad pics.

i found my old filler cap from my first wide arched nova, thought i could use this somehow in this one. only problem is i cant find the key, its in my house somewhere.:tard: im sure mocal could supply me with a new barrel and key.

wasnt sure where i wanted to move the filler cap to, but had 3 options.

1.weld up the original cap hole and smooth it off, then drill the hole to have this in the place it is originally.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00017.jpg

2. have it mounted below the door catch.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00016.jpg

3. have it mounted where the plastic vent is.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00015.jpg

no matter which i chose i would have to weld up the old filler cap recess.

cleaned up the area ready for welding.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00022.jpg

i then made a plate to weld to the inner part of the recess. then a larger plate to smooth the bodywork over. welded these in and ground down the welds. just got to fill it out now with fibreglass and filler.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC00024.jpg

decided on option 3.
so i fabricated a plate to fill out where the vent would go, will weld this in tomorrow and drill out the hole for the cap.

Filler cap works looks good. In sides look very good.

then i drilled the hole for the cap to fit into, think i mis-judged it as its a bit low. thinking about re-doing it, will have to weld a circular bit back in and drill another hole higher up. the striker is at the highest point it goes in this pic, it does sit lower when the door is on and closed.

what do you lot reckon?

havnt updated this in a while, havnt really done much worth of an update. have just been filling/sanding/smoothing the engine bay. all my hard work paid off today as i managed to get it in primer.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/01052010066.jpg

has come out fairly well, undecided if i want to paint the bay myself or just wait untill it goes in to the bodyshop to have the rest of the body done. dont really want to spray it where the car is at the moment because tons of shxt gets blown about.

other small things to update are...

ive got hold of a new set of keys for my fuel cap, so thats sorted now.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/10042010022.jpg

bought my fuel pipe ready to fit on the car once its been painted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/21042010048.jpg

also bought a new rear bumper today from nutty nova(nathan). i needed to get a new rear bumper as mine had twisted from being stored wrong, i was also planning on smoothing it to match the front so buying this one will save me time and money in the long run. the splitter will get changed over from my old bumper.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/01052010067.jpg

its a coloured primer, the top coat still has to be applied to it.

im 100percent sure the skirts and rear splitter will be grey how i originally had them, the front im unsure on. ive done a couple of photoshops and dont really like it tbh. whats got to be remembered is that the bumpers got to be cut up to house my intercooler. the lower part of the bumper is as low as i cut to on my test bumper. the front bumper will be the last item to be fitted anywho, ive got to get the engine in with the IC and then cut the bumper to suit. that wont be happening for a long time....

Bay looks good dude.

cheers benn, means alot.

went and fetched this on wednesday...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/for%20sale/07052010079.jpg

was a nice cheap buy, highly unlikely ill be using it on this car but was too cheap to miss out on.

i connected up to our jump pack at work to see if all the lamps worked, only 3 did. the wiring was a bit jumbled and after trying a new bulb in that lamp (and still not working) i decided to re-wire it all.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/06052010074.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/06052010075.jpg

stripped all the old wiring down and planned my route of attack. scotch locks seemed a decent idea to connect all the lamps into one piece of wire. made up 2 mini looms for live and earth then attached them to the lamps. ended up looking like this...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/for%20sale/07052010077.jpg

alot tidyer, it also made all 4 lamps work.:)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/for%20sale/07052010076.jpg

im sure ill find another car to fit it to for a bit of fun. may buy another bonnet to fit it to so i can swap it over anytime i feel like.

have also got a quote for sand blasting and powder coating my suspension and roll cage/rear brace. they are as follows..

153pound for rear beam, both lower arms, both knuckles, both tie bars, calipers, drums and drum back plates.

100-150pound for the 6point cage inc. door bars and rear brace.

once ive had the car painted ill be having all that done.

update on the car hopefully tomorrow.

Best to get the body done the first time mate. I'm glad I chose the pro route and not tried to do it myself at home.

The build may be dragging out but it'll be well worth it in the end so no need for the rush imo. I felt the same at one point but the bodywork is excellent now so It was well worth waiting a while for that to be sorted. So I don't mind waiting a few months to get other stuff in order before it's done ;)

OMG an update!!!

the car never got round to being painted on the 10th, the bodyshop had too many cars in as a customer couldnt take one away for two weeks. here we are again and the car is being painted over the next few days.

hooked up my 'a' frame and wrapped the car up in a tarpaulin so it doensnt look like a bare shell being towed to the bodyshop.lol. fortunately the 8miles to the bodyshop were out in the country and away from towns so less chance of being pulled over. have still got to get it back to my lockup which is in a town....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC02830.jpg

had a good chat with ted(the bodyshop man) about whats being done, he kows exactly how i want it standards wise. the primer i got for him needs to be flatted down which is costing more but atleast the car will be perfectly straight and smooth. hes only got both doors to paint with the shell at the moment but he's got to repair a ripple in both of them and a small dent. needs some filler work where the fuel cap used to be and on the back arches so the reflection in the paint will be crisp!

he's also going to stone chip the back panel, scuttle/battery area and spray some for sound proofing in the back quarters inside the car.

thanks for all the comments guys.

moffat its subaru world rally blue or by lechler colour scheme rallye blue 74f.

i now realise i should have had the tailgate done at the same time, due to me needing to allign it up using the hinges on the inside of the roof and i do want to fit the headlining back in. hoping i can leave the back end of the headlining dangling down untill the tailgates painted.

armed with 2 5litre bottles of hot water and a sponge, i went down to my garage to wash the insides of the nova. it had gathered quite a good coating of dust and dirt from when it was out on the farm, plus it had some residue from the polish etc from being painted.

the insides started off like this....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/05082010003.jpg

a tadge grubby and not nice on the eyes. gave the insides and engine bay a scrubbing and ended up like so...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/05082010006.jpg

mucho better. ted, my painter, gave me some 1500grit wet and dry and some good polish to get the paint i had sprayed super shiney and flat.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/05082010005.jpg

i started on a couple small areas to start with to see the out come, i wasnt to pleased as the paint just went dull and had no shine to it. i gave it a polish and it came back up to a shine. is that ment to happen when colour sanding? i left that for now as i dont want to ruin my paint. lol

heres a few more pics so i can pic whore, i know its nothing to look at right now but to me its a beaut. :d

update

with needing to start building the car back up, i began with the essetial parts of the car that normally get left grubby and unseen.

first on the agenda was the steering column. a full strip down, paint and rebuild was in order to get it back to its former glory.

next up was the pedal assembly, factory finish just wont do....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/17082010032.jpg

stripped it all down remembering to take pics of which clips and brackets go were. cleaned all the parts up on the wire wheel at work, to which is now annoying all my work mates as thats all they hear at break time now. primed it all then painted it black.

update

this week i cracked on with the blower motor and heater matrix assembly.
as you can see, there in need of a much wanted make over.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/25082010070.jpg
couldnt be bothered rotating the image round. ^^^ lol

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/25082010071.jpg

stripped down both of them and cleaned them off ready for paint.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/25082010073.jpg

took a few attempts to get them painted as the weather has been awful and the paint kept blooming. the foam sealing strips inside on the flap and on the outside of the matrix box were all manky and horrid. i went down to b and q to buy patio door sealing strip, its adhesive on the one side which made it ideal. just hoping it works alright with heat.

then fitted back on(with me forgetting the rubber seal first time round, doh!). i also used moly grease to lubricate the internals.

with wanting to produce a mint car, my sunroof just wont do. has got internal damage somehow and looks nasty. going to have to source a new one from where.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30082010081.jpg

removed the glass, while doing this i noticed theres a slight amount of adjustment available. the back of my sunroof has always been higher than the roof line so hopefully will be able to sort it when i get a new glass.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30082010082.jpg

also removed the sunroof screen as i got my alcantara headlining and cover to go on.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30082010083.jpg

my new headling came with an electric motor to convert it from manual, be a waste not to use it. followed some of benns guide over on migweb, eventually got the motor in place and timed up with the cables. took me a while to sort out as the motor and cable position had never been in the right place.

i used m5 bolts to hold the motor in, they go in the next hole along on the sunroof casette.(as you can see in the pic)

update

havnt updated this in a while, mainly due to me not doing much to the car. but here's what i have done.

finished off making the templates for the rear interior panels out of card.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20092010101.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20092010102.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20092010104.jpg

i opted to use the 3mm hard board i had to try make the panels. was 2pound odd a sheet so wouldnt matter if it didnt work.

i traced the templates onto the hard board and jigsawed them out. i scored down the backside several times where i wanted the board to curve. i teased the scores slightly to bend a curve into it untill i was happy.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/29092010115.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28092010114.jpg

ill be buying the material and foam to trim them next week hopefully, still got to cut them down to meet in the middle and drill the holes to mount them.

i removed my brake servo to re-paint as i didnt like the finish. wasnt smooth and could see wire wheel marks in it. rubbed it back down and gave it a few coats of black and laquer. came out much better this time.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/27092010111.jpg

Update

More progress has been carried out with the nove, seems like im making some good head way with it recently. Which is always great stuff.
Got all my bits and pieces for my loom

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010146.jpg
Got the loom back in place to find the best way of tidying it up
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010147.jpg

Instead of using the normal clips to hold the loom down ( which I don’t know what ive done with them), I got these self adhesive squares that can have a cable tie attached to them. Do a top job and were cheap enough. Lined them all across the dash part of the loom, down the sill and across the back panel. Recovered the loom in new black conduit and tied it into place.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010150.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010149.jpg

As I want to hide the engine bay loom as much as possible, I bored out a hole that goes into the inside of the wing. Had to make the hole quite big to get the plugs through. L Ill deal with the engine bay part of the loom another time. I will be removing the blue conduit so nobody worry.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010148.jpg

Once I got all that done I moved onto getting the rear beam off, using my lovely new blue point jack, I got the nova up onto axle stands.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010151.jpg
SEXY!!^^

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010153.jpg

Got the beam off in minutes, awaiting to strip it down for powder coat and rebuild.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/23102010156.jpg

I got the beam to work and stripped it down, gave the drums a wire wheel along with the stub axles and bolts/clips etc.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/27102010170.jpg
To remove the bushes I firstly cut the ends off both sides, then got a large socket to sit on the outer part of beam and a smaller socket on the inside of the bush all attached to a threaded bar.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/26102010166.jpg

After lots of tightening and cringing about the bar bending and breaking I got the bushes out.
Bushless(always the best way :p )

I gave the bolts, stub axles and brake hose clips a coating of hammerite black to freshen them up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30102010171.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30102010172.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30102010173.jpg

I also made up 4 small plates to weld onto the rear beam to strengthen it for the coilovers. didn’t take any pics of this but self explanatory. Just like so….

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/231020101582.jpg

The beam, back plates, anti roll bar and my fuel tank are now at the powder coaters. I should see these back on Saturday, but as im working im unsure if I can collect them. No biggie.

The interior panels I made got some more attention too, fitted them back up and made the holes for the fir tree fixings to go into them.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30102010176.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30102010179.jpg

I bought some ¼ inch foam and some faux leather ( yes I know I should have rear stuff but its expensive!) to cover them which arrived last week, yay.

Cut the shape of the panel into the foam, them used spray adhesive to stick it to the panel.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/02112010180.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/02112010182.jpg

After that I cut the leather to panel shape and used the spray adhesive again to stick that down, unfortunately I cant use staples in the back to hold it down as the wood is too thin. So far using the glue and numerous blocks of wood to fix the leather in place is working ok.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/02112010183.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/02112010184.jpg

Only managed to get the one done today, should get another done tomorrow. Pic of this one fitted in place.

Hopefully the foam puffs back out a bit to remove finger marks.

tek, cheers buddy.

unfortunately scott ive just finished making the rest of the panels. :tard: im quite happy to leave it how they are for now, the faux leather was only 7quid so if i change my mind it wont cost the earth to do so. thanks for advice though.:thumb: one thing i am concerned about is that the hardboard is only 3mm thick, prising the fir trees out does bend the wood. doing this with the trees attached to the board over time, i imagine, would ruin the hole and the board.

i got the jack through my local snap on dealer, 105pound on offer. which isnt bad considering its low entry and lifts it as high as any normal jack (50cm) plus, if it goes wrong its repaired free.
