How close is the loom to the pedal? I'm really liking that.

Also, how did you manage to move your radiator over to more centre? I need to do the same in order to allow for the FMIC pipe work.

See (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?98463-*HOW-TO*-Fit-an-F28-to-a-big-block-nova) a few posts down

Do you remember what size hole you drilled to get the loom grommet to fit properly? Having the loom come out from that point... does it reach round to all the sensors ok?

Also, how did you manage to move your radiator over to more centre? I need to do the same in order to allow for the FMIC pipe work.

im not using the grommet, i made the hole elongated so i knew i could get the ecu plug through, then the rest is a squeeze through there. cant remember what size the hole is but i know the standard grommet needs a 60mm hole to fit. the only sensor off the top of my head that needs adding wire to is th amal valve, the coolant sensor is a stretch too.

just drill new holes further across and voila. just be carfull you dont move it too far as the top hose wont fit correct otherwise.

Its nice to check in here from time to time to see this getting better & better! Engine bay looks lurvely...

comments like this i love! lol

Love this longtime!!!!

why thank you!

update

had a list of things i wanted to get done sunday just gone but everyting seemed to want to go wrong. sorting out the niggles this week before i go back this weekend.

but, things i managed to get round to....

stripped my old tailgate down so i could wire up my boot popper and fit the rear screen.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6522.jpg

only thing was the boot wasnt square so pulled down the rear of the headlining and messed about with that, once sorted i fitted my painted catch....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6523.jpg

it didnt want to lock correctly, so this week i had to modify it slightly and with a test on it tonight it works, hooray. so the popper will get wired up this weekend.

i couldnt fit the rear screen as the rubber was rather dirty and has overspray on it. as all my cleaning kit was at home (12miles away) i had to leave the screen and take the rubber home.

whilst fiddling with them bits i rigged up a system of filling up the gearbox, i didnt want to go buy a funnel. lol.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6524.jpg

bought some conduit to tidy up the engine loom, after getting it all on it looked so much neater and i started to like the bay again.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6533.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6535.jpg

double checked it still ran as may have disturbed something, it still does so result. it does idle a little high though. something else to sort out.

moved onto the wipers, fortunately i had a pair of the smaller length wiper arms compared to what was fitted originally. there the same as whats on my red gte and ive got 19inch blades which also clear the lower part of the screen nicer.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6527.jpg

still a work in progess, the nearside arm reacts slower than the offside.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/th_DSCN6526.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/?action=view&current=DSCN6526.mp4)

put the rear bumper up ready to bolt up, i can only find one side bracket so i had to wait untill i went home and get another.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6537.jpg

another problem, the exhaust. i new it was coming out at an angle which is what i dont want so ive got to go back and get that modded.

have also been fettling the front bumper for the intercooler, having to cut a bit at work then take it and try it is getting annoying but needs must.....here we have it up to sundays attempt.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6531.jpg

i have now cut some more off and its so close to fitting.

thanks for looking

How much room is there around the brake pedal with the loom in there? Any pics?

Where the loom comes out looks a tad tight but seems to work. Much better than running it next to/over the battery.

update

yet again a long period of no work on the car, but an update none the less.

started off by doing a few little touches, got the grill badge painted in the matching grey as the grill/skirts/window surrouns etc. no pic of this unfortunately. the door check straps got a coat of satin black along with some shiny cap head bolts.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6830.jpg

also painted the expansion bottle cap, unsure if i should do it grey (which might clash with the bottle) or i need to paint the oil cap black too. (see down for pic of that)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6832.jpg

the spare set of dash clocks i bought had all faded on the red sections, as it was the traces on the back of the old clocks that had failed i swapped the gauges from that one to this, alot more vivid in colour.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6831.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6840.jpg

got most of the dash back assembled, need to get some new bolts for the momo steering wheel as i only ever had 3 last time it was on the road. lol.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6841.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6842.jpg

removed the o/s/r wheel as this one never had a new uniroyal rainsport 2 on it, had a second hand tyre to tie me over untill i could afford another rainsport, will get that done tomorrow and put the proxie on the spare wheel. with the wheel off i could try it in the spare wheel well, need to make up so way of holding it in place. so i got some m8 threaded bar which i had around to try on the standard screw cap that holds the wheel down, its the same thread, result!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6843.jpg

all i need to do know is cut it down to the correct length and bolt it in.

after this i had a squint at the exhaust to try find an easy solution to making it fit. slackened off the clamp and rotated it so it came out where it should on the bumper, im still not a fan of how it comes out, too much of an angle. if i left it there then all id have to do is move the mounting bracket and caress the join line in on the silencer as it hits the tyre. either that or ill have to trailer it over to the exhaust shop to do it again, way too much hassle. hmmm

also need to lift the one corner of the bumper up as its slanted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6829.jpg

the front bumper has been cut some more to make it fit, is pretty good now so can go to paint soon, got the bonnet back on and lined up. i was going to stick the bonnet lifters back on but im not feeling them, i may stick with the stay for now.

update

more progress in the right direction with this update, i recently moved to a place that has a good sized garage that i could work on the nove in. will benefit me as i can work on the car when i feel and not have to drive 13miles to do so.

i wanted to make the novas new home nice to work in so i painted the floor, helps with dust and much nicer to lie on if need be.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6949.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6950.jpg

the garage started to get filled with junk, as per, but hopefully sorting it out soon. bought myself a new toolbox as mine was too small. a tool sales chap who comes round in his lorry had a top box for sale cheap as it was a cash deal slightly damaged box. the only damage was on the lid and it will be open most the time so didnt bother me.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7124.jpg

asked a friend to bring the nova over for me, so kind. we got it on the trailer, this one with a tilt bed on....(old picture)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3771.jpg

only to notice there was fuel leaking from somewhere, upon closer inspection it was coming from the top side of the tank. how? i couldnt tell you, the tank had been shot blasted and powdercoated so there was a chance it made pin holes in it. so this meant i would have to remove the tank.

but, got the car to my new place and tucked away.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7136.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7138.jpg

a few days later i thought i best had do some work to it, with the motor not running AGAIN i delved into it. i had it running when i had the loom placed on top of the engine and ever since i fitted it correctly it wouldnt start. no fuel was present at the rail, i checked for a feed at the pump and i had 12volts. i swapped the pump for another new one i had and the feed from the tank in a jerry can so i new it had petrol. cranked over and the it started. good start to the day.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/th_DSCN7139.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/?action=view&current=DSCN7139.mp4)

once i was happy i set about modifying the exhaust, im sure i said in a previous post about it coming out the bumper wrong. i rotated the exhaust joint to come out at the right point, then marked where the hanging bracket needed to be cut and welded back on. this is on hold at the moment as ive tacked it in place and havnt had chance to try it back on as the middle section isnt fitted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7158.jpg

after that it was time to remove the tank, the middle section of exhaust had to be taken off, easy you may think, far from it. the bloke who made the exhaust at powerflow made the downpipe to middle section sleeve joint too long, so trying to slide the middle section off would result in it hitting the beam and not going any further. drop the beam off the shock bolts? tried it, no more room. cut a small bit of the downpipe whilst on the car? tred it, got half way through. take the downpipe off? jesus wept. had to do that in the end, half hour removal of the tank turned into 2hrs of messing around.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7141.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7142.jpg

either way the tank was out moments after. the fuel is seeping out of the top half, wipe it clean and seconds later it comes back through.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7143.jpg

i asked a local radiator/tank repairer to give me a rough guess of a cost to repair it, was half the price of a new tank. i didnt think it was worth it as i couldnt guarentee it wouldnt happen again. ordered a new tank from imperial, the gte tank was on back order but got one ordered anyway. arrived today in bare metal, will sort out some paint and get it sprayed up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7156.jpg

also received a set of black mats shaped for the novas floor for a perfect fit.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7157.jpg

ordered up some new bolts for the steering wheel as last time i had the car out 4/5years ago i only ever had 4 bolts.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7140.jpg

hopefully buying a small trailer from my boss this week which will mean i can take the car to shows and not worry if it blows up. havnt got a towing car yet so my red gte will have to go unfortunately.

thats where im upto at the moment, the weekend may bring some more joy if the weather perks up.

thanks for looking.

update

not much of an update, things have slowed down with the project but progress is still occuring.

got it together enough the take it for a test drive up my road, bit of clanging and banging from the back end made me stop and go back. turned out the rear tyres were rubbing the coilover springs, i happened to have some 6mm spacers to hand so fitted them and took it for another test drive, doesnt rub the springs now but rubs the arches ever so slightly. ordered up some 3mm spacers which solved the problem all together, painted them red to blend in with the drum..

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7334.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7336.jpg

im running eds phase 2 chips, which happened to come with my ecu, so i had to sort out the fuelling. i had my standard yellow injectors cleaned and tested a while back meaning i didnt fancy swapping them to saab reds. especially if i wanted to up the power later on the only way to go was an adjustable fuel reg.

i looked about for a bit to find a reasonably priced adjustable FPR as im on a tight budget now, i kept looking back at the one TX autosport sell, ive got a few bits of theres on my engine and the quality is top notch. i gave them a call and asked a few questions to get some insight. they had only just got them back in stock but didnt have any fuel hose to go with the kit, they gave me a tenner off and free postage so wasnt too bad a deal.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7338.jpg

trying to find some where to fit it was puzzling, i didnt want to make up brackets or make it too complicated fo something so simple. i came up with the plan to mount it to the inlet manifold where there was small off casting.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7342.jpg

replaced the standard fuel reg with the blank and re-routed the fuel lines, ran the car up and adjusted the fuel pressure.(with the vacuum off and blocked)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7359.jpg

as i said in my previous post that i bought a trailer and i would have to sell my red gte, the gte should be being picked up this week by its new owner. hopefully he will look after it like it should be and preseved in its natural guise. that said, i went and bought a new car so i can tow this one to track days and so on.

its a vectra sri with the exterior pack 2, which contains a vxr front bumper(with different lower lip), vxr skirts, rear apron, spoiler, steering wheel and gear knob. plus the 18inch delta wheels.

as i cant help myself with modifying cars i have a few plans for it such as a re-map, coilovers, de-cat etc. for now i bought a towbar to fit so i can use my trailer, heres a small how to...

start off with one towbar kit, i bought a towsure detachable. i wanted a detachable so the looks of the car arnt affected too much.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7347.jpg

first off was to drill out the dimples in the boot floor to fit the spacers..

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7348.jpg

once done you can place the spreader plates on top and attach both side support braces underneigth..

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7349.jpg

fit the centre cross bracing and tighten it all up and you should be left with this..

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7350.jpg

and with out the ball..

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7351.jpg

just got the wring to sort out.

update

its been a long time again since an update, think ive done enough now to warrent one so here i go....

the engine had a slight tapping noise coming from the cambelt cover so presumed the belt was touching it somehow. i removed the cover and inspected it, i came to the conclusion that the cambelt cover spacers wertn doing there job as it had movement in it prior to me sorting it. i bought some new spacers with the rubbers from vauxhall and fitted them, i didnt get the rubber washer for the outside of the cover so had to make something up,

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8861_zpsa28bafeb.jpg

had a couple valves about so cut the bottom off.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8862_zps1997533b.jpg

one solved problem, the inner rubbers were expensive from vaux for what they were so glad i found an easy solution for the outers.

the 5mm spacers i fitted to the rear wheels to avoid the coilovers now made the tyre hit the arch. with strategic calculations i went for 3mm spacers, fortunately now i have space between the arch and the coilover. painted them red so they didnt miss match from the drum

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8863_zpsa702e5f8.jpg

another small detail, painted the bonnet latch and fitted a stainless cap head bolt

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8864_zpsdf7ad97b.jpg

with looking at doing track days ive opted to buy a few bits to make it more oriented to that, kind of having a trailer queen guise and a track look. i had been waiting for a cheap set of cesaros to turn up that i didnt have to travel miles for. a set came up 15miles from me which was a result.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8866_zps53ae7b56.jpg

all nice and straight and minimal face damage, with them being track wheels i wanted a vibrant colour to stand out a bit on track. with the decision made to paint them a similar colour to the cage and other minor red items i set about giving them a bit of a refurb.

i used TFR to remove all stuck on dirt, they came up well.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9253_zps72a46151.jpg

i wanted the insides black as brake dust makes wheels look horrible and was cheaper that painting them all red.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9254_zps6d7b607a.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9257_zpsf492544d.jpg

prepped the outsides and masked off the insides.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9258_zpsfb13d0b3.jpg

all finished.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9275_zpsb7ba62ce.jpg

next track derived part, was a different bonnet. i cut out some funky vents to the one side, there more for looks than function. having a second bonnet will help stop my blue bonnet getting damged on track. i may buy another one as this one is dented pretty much all over and would need shed loads of filler in it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0085_zps2e11ba02.jpg

the last item was to make an air scoop headlight. as i got a few spare headlights i thought i may aswell put them to good use. the way im doing it is going to be similar to mk2 cav was featured in total vauxhall some years ago, i liked how the trumpet was sat on the glass of the light.

im still in the process of buying somthing to cut the glass but i do have the ducting, should be straight forward once the holes in it.

i do plan to paint it, the peak black but unsure on the rest. unsure if blue would be over kill?

with wanting to film any track time i do i browsed the net for camera mounts, i stumbled across some american that made his own. as money is i tight i gave it ago, he used some sort of clamp (that i couldnt find) and a mini tripod. i used a 't' bolt clamp and a mini tripod, to make one it goes little like this...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9303_zpsb18b1900.jpg

drilled a hole in the clamp..

i unscrewed the small screw to remove the legs of tripod.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9305_zpse417f42d.jpg

the small section now has to mount onto the clamp, the screw that came out was too short. i found a longer one in my box of tricks and mated them together. i cut a length of tractor tube to use as the grippy bit between the clamp and the cage. once trial mounted it came out like this...

the view...

i did test run it today and it vibrates a bit, the camera is a bit too heavy for the mount so a compact wouldnt vibrate as much. i think ill see how i get on before i alter it.

the spare softstar i have in the boot was a bit damaged so i rubbed it down, filled any minor marks and painted it.

dug out my twin reverse cluster, i did used to run with the 2 reverse lights but to save me swapping it over for mot time i bought a led bulb that shines red.

when i had my red gte i had started to make a scuttle cover for it, it didnt ever come out correct so i gave up, i needed one for this one so had another go. this time using hardboard, i had to make it fit so it missed the wiper linkage i have fitted, only way to do this was cut a section out for the sweep of it.

as i was taking more pics of the car at a distance i realised it needed the mudflaps back on it. the ones i used before had the red vauxhall badge on which ive gone off, i will be getting identicle ones but completely blank. i couldnt remove the badge off these ones.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN8867_zps75ea75f9.jpg

reading through other members WIP threads they often throw up something that gets over looked in your own project, benn had broken his inner CV joint and came to the conclusion the angle the passenger shaft sat at was quite high. i checked mine out and noticed it was angled upwards and pointed to the back of the car. id rather not have my joint break when i least expect it and as my engine sat a little low on the passenger side i wanted to alter my mount.

i unbolted the mount and moved it up as much as i dared to have the engine sit more level, in jacking the motor up it moved backwards too. marked where new holes had to go and drilled it out, for a bit more strength i welded on some thick washes.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9310_zpsbab7f2cb.jpg

the holes have moved about 1.5cm up and 0.5cm back, any gain is good gain.

a mate of mine has done a few track days already so had some older r888s about, he had 2 spare so gave them to me which i got fitted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9319_zps45fd1ae4.jpg

with much anticipation of if they would ever go under my arches i got cracking to fit them. the rear one misses the arch but feels like its touching the coilover, after a test drive i couldnt here any noises off them rubbing, i may have to space them out a little but i wont be able to lower it much more.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9329_zps6e317b03.jpg

last thing, i bought a hybrid turbo as my one was smoking a bit from cold and as i was running phase 2 i wanted the turbo last a bit longer.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7367_zps3129a4e3.jpg

gave me the chance to finally fit the oil restrictor bolt to it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN7369_zpsda218f58.jpg

seems to be running ok at the mo, still need to sort out the exterior paint work and the front bumper.

with the arrival of a little one immenant, im unsure when ill update again but hopefully wont be long.

thanks for looking.

I fitted a clustered LED one to mine, think it was from Halfords, but it shone pink though and wasn't hugely bright for a foglight.

Good thinking on checking your shaft angles. That's been a nightmare.

I would reinforce the slam panel in the middle like standard or add bonnet pins

On my nova turbo after removing the centre brace and cutout for inlet pipe it was very weak and bonnet would creep up at high speeds

update

small update for this weeks work, bought an 80mm diamond tipper hole saw to make a large enough hole in a spare headlight.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9533_zpsa7b89bfe.jpg

lots of lube and low/medium speed cut me a hole in the glass...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9459_zps0a737353.jpg

bonded the ducting ring down and then cut a large hole on the other side to fit the ducting through, came out quite well and a nice little mod for the track.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9526_zps38f4b058.jpg

next on the list was to re-arrange my harnesses, after a couple of minor test drives i found the clips rattled about too much on the eye bolts. made the decision to wrap around the rear brace, done some research on how to fit them on correctly as i didnt want any bad accidents from neglect.

to save the paint on the brace i bought some clear protective film, might be a bit overkill though.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9653_zpsf70dfb6f.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9650_zps72fdcfd9.jpg

whilst messing about with the height of the rear it came to my attention that lowering it more gave me more clearance from the coilover spring, i ditched the 3mm spacers and slammed it to the floor to check for other clearance issues. with it almost on the bumpstops the next thing it rubbed on was the cage bolts that come through the arch. i had a bout 15mm excess thread which could potentially pierce the tyre if i hit a big bump. so i cut all 8 down so this would ever be a problem.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9695_zpsf855dc2a.jpg

i noticed while playing with the coilovers that the springs were hefty enough for what my needs for the car were, 10 inch 160lb. ive seen on here people like 300lb springs so wanted to get a pair of these, i rang gaz and they suggested to go for a 9inch spring in 300lb. they arrived yesterday and got them fitted today. Is it safe to have the harnesses around a bolted in strut brace? Assume it's a nice sturdy steel item like rollcage/CDS tube?

update

long overdue update, was looking to get one more in before PVS as this has been the date I was aiming for as I wont have the car out too much this year, only for shows.
after selling my old trailer I bought another one, I couldn’t afford to buy something really trick so I had to settle for this.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0091_zps1f38e121.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN0091_zps1f38e121.jpg.html)

its a bit rough around the edges but it will be ideal for the nova. I set about fixing/replacing/removing parts that just wont cut it. I took the trailer up to the local quarrie to see how much it weighed, came back at 580kg.
first things first was strip it down to remove some weight. removed all the scaffold boards from the middle and the rear girder which came in at a total of around 70kg.

as the trailer looks agricultural and manky I gave it a couple coats of hammerite

After refitting the above and painting the floor pan again the solution is to jack the front of the trailer up to avoid the scraping.

Onto my helmet, he he.

I didn’t like the white the helmet was in so always planned to paint it, as I had some steel grey from my first nova left over I was going to do It that colour but changed my mind after I rubber it down.

Progress with the car now, as I had my ‘track’ number plate to swap over when I use it I wanted a way to remove the plate easily but also not look tacky like screws. The problem solved with Velcro.

Something I’ve hated on the car has always been the tyres, I did have 195/45/16 Uniroyal rainsport 2’s fitted but the sidewall looked huge, managed to get a deal with the toyo rep for a set of 195/40/16, got 4 t1r’s for the price of 2. Worked out to be £120 so was ideal. They look a whole lot better.

With my rad being moved back slightly to accommodate the intercooler, the turbo is going to radiate the heat onto the rad. I made up a little heat shield to help the situation out.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9914_zps6435a6da.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9914_zps6435a6da.jpg.html)

Over the past couple of weeks with running the engine up to temp and test runs, I noticed a loud whistling coming from the hose with the one way valve in. the one way valve I had in there was bought off eBay and is used for quite a few other jobs, I don’t know why it decided to start playing me a tune but I couldn’t have this. Benn happily sold me one he had so I didn’t waste time fitting it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9649_zps62fd0935.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9649_zps62fd0935.jpg.html)

And painted up…fitted and no more whistling.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9666_zpsfd8b3552.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9666_zpsfd8b3552.jpg.html)

Through the one test drive I managed to break a inner cv joint on the n/s, as benn has also encountered problems of this nature I followed a few of his to try diagnose it. I first of all done the test to check how much plunge the inner joint has, this came back quite conclusive that I didn’t have a lot, in need to gain extra plunge I had 2 grooves cut into the shaft to move the cv joints further, thus lengthening the shaft. I gained 9mm off the shaft and 3mm off the spacer I now have fitted between the outer joint and bearing.

As the cars so low the angle of the shaft is still quite a lot, I havnt yet tested the car again, but I am on the look out for a spare shaft incase I break it at PVS, can do an emergency swap over.

Last week the car was taken to a local body shop to be flat and polished, something that was never done by the person who painted it. The guy made the best he could out of a bad job, the paintwork still isn’t how I want it but it will do for now. Ideally all the paintwork wants doing again as theres lots of it I hate, eg; spoiler paint cracking, o/s ‘b’ pillar bubbling, roof has dents in.

So please every body who sees the car at shows, please explain to people I know the paint is shxt.

The bumper has also been treated to new filler and being painted to collect this week, will get it fitted asap.

And finally, the gte decals havnt been on for around 4years now so Im so pleased to say there back on!

Update

I eventually got the front bumper back after it being painted in the wrong colour blue, I wasted no time in getting it fitted so I could see an almost finished product.

With lots of preparation running up to the PVS weekend I was all ready to go on the Saturday at 5am, fortunately I had no issues on the way down with the vec or trailer so looked like a good weekend ahead

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0162_zps79302052.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0162_zps79302052.jpg.html)

I got to santa pod around half 8 and unloaded the car all set to try it down the strip, this was pretty much the first time it was used besides a couple of short test runs up my street, I was worried it may just fall apart after a run or two as it hadn’t been tested at full chat.

Through out the morning I managed to do 11 runs, best time of 13.4s at 109mph. As it was my first time on a drag strip and the cars first time outing I was pleased with the results. Traction is the biggest issue, followed by a heavy foot. Judging by my rubbish 60ft times Im hoping I can get into the 12s with how it is, I will be sorting out some yoko a048 tyres for my cesaros and couple other tweeks to get the most out of it.

I did have an issue with a slipping clutch and then 1st, 3rd and 5th gears not feeling right on my 8th run, I did adjust the clutch a little bit and didn’t experience any slip after that, the gear issue is adjustment. I still have my rose jointed linkage to fit at some point.

Heres some pics,

Sunday morning came around quickly, with being on the power and style awards stand I had to be there for 8, but a sausage and egg mcmuffin put me behind in the traffic getting into the show. Lol

I had to give it a wipe down after it being used Saturday and dirt being sprayed up onto it from the vec whilst on the trailer, also had to re-adjust the front ride height as I raised it to help out the angle of the passenger driveshaft. I was going to change the headlight back but I just couldn’t be bothered.

I loved the attention the car was getting, seeing people look around it and take pictures made me think its been worth while. I know its not perfect as the paint sucks and theres still bits and bobs to sort out, but I enjoyed it.

Sunday evening saw the car back in my garage awaiting some fettling,

More to come….

update

with PVS being my first test of the car it through up a few things I needed to fettle, I was struggling to get 5th/6th and 1st/3rd/5th had also moved along way forward. I managed to reset the linkage to a good neutral position with 3rd to 4th being a good throw.

after a lot of messing around to get 5th and 6th whilst also trying to keep reverse, the only way to sort this was to trim down some of the gearstick shaft as it was hitting against the top of the gaiter surround stopping it going over enough for the relevant gears. trimming it down has now allowed the selection of all gears which im happy with now.

something that I found annoying was the my boost and oil temp gauges weren't bright enough when in daylight, this lead me to take the feed from the 'lights on' off to a permanent feed that runs the gauges, nice and bright so ideal!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9885_zps6dd7b88a.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9885_zps6dd7b88a.jpg.html)

next on the agenda was some grippier tyres for better launches, I managed to source some half worn yokohama ao48's for the fronts. I would have bought new as we get quite a good deal at work but at half the price it was a bit better for me.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9878_zps92ef3e4f.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9878_zps92ef3e4f.jpg.html)

so having the cesaros fitted I needed to crack on with my centre caps.

I didn't like the recess in the middle of the caps so decided to smooth these off, first job was to heat up the centre and gently tap the dome inwards, this was followed by a very quick skim of filler, primer and paint.

now im really unsure what colour I used to paint the wheels, was either carmine red or flame red, I bought a can of carmine red as I had more empty cans of this laying about so a bit of presuming happened, in my opinion I opted for the wrong colour....

my trailers light board took a nasty fall a couple of weeks ago when delivering a car, I kept it so it was removable as the brackets helped hold the ramps down, I had enough of this so made them permanent on the ends of the trailer.

Update

Its been a mighty long time since ive updated, either havnt had time or just been too lazy. As my last post I was chasing a faster quarter mile time, which see me down to 13.3s at a 110mph, launching, tramping and clutch slip wernt helping me one bit. So plans have been set out to rectify any faults and go for more power than I had (phase 2 spec).

The list at the moment is:

Paddle clutch

Bigger turbo

Upgrade my fuel system

Forged rods

Uprated valve springs

Equal length shaft

Management??

I have started on the strip and rebuild with further things cropping up that I may aswell change now so Im happy, these include painting the bay again and tidying up loose ends, relocating the header tank to the scuttle, repaint engine parts that have started to age from a lot of messing about and have a lot of bolts/nuts and odd pieces zinc plated.

Over the past 6months ive been collecting parts ready for the upgrades, these include 2 new rear tyres for drag racing, these make the back end of the car sit up higher whilst also being thinner so I can adjust the rear coil overs up without touching the tyre. While attending the castle combe action day I got a taste for some ciruit work, with needing a pair of tyres on the rear for track daying and not wanting to swap my drag tyres and track tyres, I got hold of a pair of cesaros thanks to abolesta (alex) off here. Plan to paint them red to match the other 4 and eventually get 2 yoko ad08 tyres.

I managed to get hold of a cheap bosch 044 fuel pump as a start to changing my fuel system, I did try it on the car but it wasn’t working correctly as it wasn’t getting a good gravity feed. With wanting to keep the pump, I looked up on adding a swirl pot so it would get the supply in needed. The next purchases were a small swirl pot, braided hose in 8mm and 13mm along with a facet lift pump. (an interupter would be better but im sure this will do)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0599_zpsc7ca1aac.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0599_zpsc7ca1aac.jpg.html)

Waiting for parts to turn up cheap has paid off well as Ive managed to get hold of a sachs 4 paddle clutch with a ttv billet flywheel for a good price, along with a z20let management converted to fit a c20let. Both of these items for fitted to ben lomas’ nova, the latter coming off a chap that purchased it from ben originally.

Being interested with the actual weight differences of the clutch/fly setup, the scales came out to see if it would really be beneficial in changing the flywheel.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0587_zps6544b5ba.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0587_zps6544b5ba.jpg.html)

The original set up came out at 15kg where as the paddle and ttv flywheel were 10kg. Not a bad saving at all. Hopefully this will put a stop to my clutch slipping.

With a lot of enthusiasm for the build I wasted no time in stripping the car down and getting the gear box out.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0530_zps634db5cb.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0530_zps634db5cb.jpg.html)

Then onto the motor, which left me an empty bay. Got a few bits to tidy up first, got it booked into have the bay painted at the end of july by the same person that painted my front bumper as I was very pleased with his work.

The z20let management came with quite a few bits, including a vxr afm, (vxr injectors which im waiting on) and the necessary sensors etc. getting on with the first job of mounting the fly by wire throttle body to the c-let manifold. I bought a 8mm thick aluminium plate to make an adapter. Starting off with ideas and making measurements saw me with a good start.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0562_zpsb86d00bb.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0562_zpsb86d00bb.jpg.html)

Ending up with this.

Also not needing the idle control valve any more I fashioned up a blanking plug to block it off. also smoothed off the lugs on the back of the manifold for an extra few mm clearance to the bulkhead and matched the gasket to the ports.

Other parts arrived which included a evo turbo tdo5hra 10.5t, this one has a titanium alloy turbine wheel , a corsa c header tank. (as advised off benn) and a pair of XE dispack cams, I already have a xe inlet so only using the exhaust cam.

Nice update,

What was your reasoning behind selecting the z20let management route?

Wouldn't Omex have been an easier option? I.e no fly by wire / afm etc.

Keep up the good work.

as I already had a forge actuator for my old k16 (which I changed to a higher rated spring just after I stopped using it), I wanted to keep it and hopefully mod it to fit the evo turbo. I contacted forge about this and they sent me a host of parts.

some wernt needed and a slight modification to the rod meant it fitted quite nicely.

got the valves out of the head ready for my new valve springs to turn up, was expecting them to arrive this week but they havnt. gave the inlet port a slight taper to match the gasket/inlet manifold aswell.

a set of china special conrods came in the post aswell, I have been quite dubious about getting a set of these but after very close inspection by me and a few colleagues they seem pretty good quality. even comparing them to a set of cat cams and arrow rods, they look nigh on identical in finish. whether they can with stand the same sort of forces will be told in time

also to come in the post was a set of ARP head studs and a wide band lambda bung. more parts should be coming next week.

I need to get on with the bay ready for paint but ill be waiting until I can move it up to a mates workshop after PVS

thanks for looking.

update

Since the last update ive been pottering on with various bits and bobs, the gearbox being an item of many. I wire wheeled all the old paint off and gave it a a new coat of silver, along with cleaning up the carbon fibre plate which makes it very sexy.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9823_zps26c55e5a.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9823_zps26c55e5a.jpg.html)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0008_zps501ea476.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0008_zps501ea476.jpg.html)

One thing I did notice was that the gearbox mount had broken off the top bolt hole on the box, now it would have made more sence to have it repaired if I had the bit that had come away or more time and money. With set on making something work for now I decided to make a new plate that would tie in with the other 2 bolt holes and then attach to the back of the block.

The plate was made and should hopefully work, trial fitment will have to wait until the engine and box go back together. I do have a steel tube to go between the plate and the block.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9834_zps30ea24b8.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9834_zps30ea24b8.jpg.html)

Whilst on the gearbox area, I retried my rose jointed gear linkage I made years ago. Im still not happy with how tight it is and with it being impossible to set it up correctly when I tried ages ago I gave up on the idea. The linkage I was using was a standard item but it had play in the bushing, with always trying to save money I devised the plan to cut it open and fit some rubber pieces I had about into it. This was done and then tacked back up, it took all the slack out and will be ok for now.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0099_zpsce2777e5.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0099_zpsce2777e5.jpg.html)

Onto the car, I took it into work so I could weld up some of the holes I didn’t want any more. Also tidied up various other engine bay discrepencies.

Some people may know I usually run the engine loom through the o/s cap that bolts onto the bulkhead. Space is very limited in the cock pit due to the pedal assembly. Using a small belt/finger sander I managed to take some of the material away leaving me much more room to play with. The Z20LET loom isn’t as big as C-LET so this should be ideal.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9819-2_zpsc7fe9304.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9819-2_zpsc7fe9304.jpg.html)

Another way I was trying to save money was to make my own top hat for the Z-LET throttle body, the flanges can be bought off eBay along with a 90degree stainless pipe.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9828_zps9d280c2a.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9828_zps9d280c2a.jpg.html)

I had to bore the flange out to get the angle I wanted with the pipe, was somewhat limited due to how the flange sits on the throttle body with the sealing ring. This will get welded up by Adam dewis along with my intercooler and my sump.

As my one rubber engine mount had torn slightly I didn’t want to re-use it, a quick call to euro car parts and I got a new one for £12. The previous ones had been filled with silicone but read somewhere that they fitted bits of rubber in-between to increase rigidity, tyre valves were the item of choice and done a good job in filling the small holes once cut up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0020_zps9adeb0aa.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0020_zps9adeb0aa.jpg.html)

David Dixon come up trumps with an equal length shaft which I then painted black, also Alex j sold me the dummy part to make a complete set up, this too painted in black and silver.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0055_zps6ec7e491.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0055_zps6ec7e491.jpg.html)

Tidying up the engine bay even more was to get some pipes added to my intercooler, I really didn’t plan on cutting the intercooler as it’s a forge item and for some reason I just didn’t want to do it, but I had no choice to as it gave the angles I needed.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9821_zps5ccd69dd.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9821_zps5ccd69dd.jpg.html)

I took the block into work and stripped it down ready for the new rods, these got fitted quite simply.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0063_zps8ffe8780.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0063_zps8ffe8780.jpg.html)

I gave the bore a quick deglaze and got the pistons back in, I then found out the ARP rod bolts that came out of standard rods didn’t fit in the new rods. Doh! I got the pistons fitted and cable tied the big end caps together temporarily.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0066_zpseadfbee9.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0066_zpseadfbee9.jpg.html)

Ill be sending the sump off to Adam dewis to be baffled along with the other bits that need welding, so this was only fitted with a couple of bolts.

ARP studs fitted along with a new Z20LET elring gasket.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0072_zps2445e352.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0072_zps2445e352.jpg.html)

Head torqued down, cam pulleys fitted and timed up, I had to return the inlet pulley back to standard timing marks as im now using both XE cams.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0077_zps4bfa9ff2.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0077_zps4bfa9ff2.jpg.html)

As im using the z20let coil pack I had to modify the cam cover slightly for it to fit, I was hoping it would be mounted low enough so the plug cover would still go on. I wanted to remove minimal material from the cam cover for the coil pack to fit, in doing this I had to modify the plug cover.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0064_zps8bb9e9c5.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0064_zps8bb9e9c5.jpg.html)

It sits up higher on the one side which I cant help as the coil packs plug is the highest point, I may use Velcro to stick it down which will level it out even though it will be higher than the cam cover. Will have to wait and see on that front.

Also fitted was the alternator with drilled out mounting bracket holes, this has given me more scope for aligning the belt as before it was on an angle and kept coming off. I lost one belt on the strip at shakey. lol

Next week will see the engine bay painted and hopefully the engine fitted back into the bay. Yippee!

Thanks for looking.

So it will be a Clet running Zlet management? Kinda cool, what the reason behind it?

Bay looks good. You've done just what i'm gonna where the loom enters the cabin.

Zlet management is mappable iirc. So no need for aftermarket management and safer when running big powers. ;)

as nick said, its mappable. granted it doesn't have as much scope like omex, dta etc but for what I want its more than ideal.

its also different to what everybody else has done, as far as im aware the only other c-let in a nova with it fitted is boost beast. it does have a different spec to mine but their making 470hp per motor with the z-let loom.

Update

Back again with an update, something I forgot to upload last time was the fly by wire throttle pedal which I got mounted to the bulkhead.

I didn’t want to butcher the bulkhead too much incase I wanted to revert back to a standard pedal, as I wouldn’t be using the cable for the throttle pedal this hole was more than adequate to use. Another hole was available next to this and a lower one had to be drilled. I made a small plate with 2 studs welded on to spread the load on the upper holes as I didn’t want the thin bulkhead tearing.

The pedal angle had to be modified to fit in line with the novas pedals, along with making sure the pedal bottomed out nearest the floor so no stress was put on the pedal internals or bulkhead.

The car got taken down to the paint shop to have the engine bay painted. 2 days later I got the car back ready to build back up.

As I had the week off I was able to crack on, getting a lot of jobs done with what parts I had.

First off was to install the spare rack I had painted previous, old one off, rack boots swapped over and then fitted along with the servo.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0111_zpsca175fc5.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0111_zpsca175fc5.jpg.html)

Getting on to the big part of the week, installing the engine without scratching the new paint! The billet flywheel and sachs clutch got fitted with the box being bolted up next.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0115_zpsfe5a3b2c.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0115_zpsfe5a3b2c.jpg.html)

Going back to my last updates I had modified the rear gearbox mount, I trial fitted this to make sure it would fit to the block with no issues.

All ok with this meant the engine could be dropped in from the top.

I bought these plastic bolt covers to try out, I did want all my bolts zinc plated but this would have cost a lot more and I always new id forget some that would need doing. wasn’t sure if they would look tacky but Im quite happy. There not going to be on show that much so wont be noticed by all, just tidys up niggly bits.

As you can see the top hat sits too high and looks stupid, more mods to this will follow.

z-let loom trial fitted to figure out the best routing.

Compared to a c-let loom, this is a thousand times easier to position/hide and lengthen.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0138_zpsc0465143.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0138_zpsc0465143.jpg.html)

These pictures show how hidden the loom is, the injectors across the top will now be run under the inlet. The AFM wiring needs to be over the gearbox, coil pack wires had to be lengthened, front BCS is under the inlet, the long section of wiring going over the top of the gearbox now goes under the inlet through into the cabin, the CTS needs lengthening to go under the engine upto the original position. MAP sensor will be rerouted once I know where im mounting it etc.

I finally got round to having ago at the fuel system when I ran out of things to do with the engine. I bought myself a rivnut tool so I could mount the swirl pot in the boot.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0136_zps171bb06d.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0136_zps171bb06d.jpg.html)

Fuel returns fitted along with the feed to the main bosch 044. Clips for the lines have arrived today and will get fitted at some point.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0139_zpse72c6901.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0139_zpse72c6901.jpg.html)

As I already have copper lines running through the car it made it easier to fit the swirl pot and new lines. The return from the rail now goes back to the swirl pot, where as the return from the swirl pot now goes to the return on the tank.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0140_zpsa950d620.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0140_zpsa950d620.jpg.html)
I just need fit the lift pump and line for this to the swirl pot, also the main pump in the original carrier which is too small.

Ill be collecting a load of bits again ready to have another big attack at it.

Thanks for looking

Thanks, i know but the price per fitting i cant justify atm. Im unsure how well the teflon hose will create a seal so i may have to revise it all again to proper fittings. Theres no real pressure any where in these lines.

update

To get the car useable for next year the only feesable way was to get a cheap manifold to use for now until I can get james middleton to sort me out one of the ones he gets made.

The manifold needed to be reflanged to suit the engine as it was originally off an Evo 6, cutting off the top bolt holes and redrilling the bottom holes to line up with the c20let flange. As this was ment to be a budget manifold I opted to weld the flange on myself using a standard mig welder. Using thick 'c' shaped beads meant it gave a good spread of weld to seal the two together. I also welded in a brace between the flange to the turbo flange to try help carry the weight of the turbo and stop the manifold cracking.

happy with the results I used some hammerite heat paint to cover the welds and make the manifold look nicer. Also, to try keep the heat down in the bay I bought some cheap heat wrap to cover it. The pics of the centre runners only have 1 covering, but I have now put a second layer around due to it going to be close to the radiator(if it fits).

The first trial fit in the engine bay was productive, the manifold fits on nicely, although quite large and will require the slam panel to be modified. I new this was going to be an issue but shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Offered the turbo up and got one bolt on, the lump on the back of the compressor housing fouls the dipstick(also new this would happen but was unsure on the extent) and the actuator wont fit in its original position due to how low it is with the front cross member.

Cutting down and grinding the lump from the back of the turbo as much as I dared gave me a few more mm of clearance, the dipstick tube will get heated up and bent back for more. Hopefully will give me enough room but we will see. Another hole for the actuator bracket was drilled and spaced out using washers to give the desired effect, the actuator arm has to be altered which I will assess next week.

update

had a day off last week so was able to get more progress done with the nova, excuse the bad pictures.

a few items were plain sailing but some have thrown up a few issues that need to be revised.

first off the easy parts, top hat fitted and checked for clearance.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9826_zpsdc94a414.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9826_zpsdc94a414.jpg.html)

fuel rail fitted with the siemens 630cc injectors then fitted to the inlet with the wiring connected. I do plan on getting some new conduit to cover up the loom, even though the loom isn't that old compared to a c-let item. Need to clean the connectors too.

fuel pressure regulator repositioned slightly compared to how it was before, using a cap head bolt into a hole tapped out.

Arp rod bolts torqued up and sump, the sump had a lick of paint whilst removed.

A new temp sensor plug was sourced to replace the original which had the wire pulled out of the connecter, the wires also got lengthened to accommodate the route its taking under and across the sump.

Trying out the turbo set up once again for clearance, the actuator now clears the lower panel. I think im going to alter the angle of it again so the actuator sits more inline with the travel of the waste gate arm.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9823_zpsa43eca42.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9823_zpsa43eca42.jpg.html)

trying the radiator in place gave me the realisation of why off the shelf manifolds don't work in places they arnt designed for.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9820_zpsc1fe4dea.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9820_zpsc1fe4dea.jpg.html)

With the intercooler in the usual position, the space is very limited for a radiator. Only options are to move the intercooler forward/change the manifold/get the head flange machined down 4-5mm and alter the waste gate arm pin.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9859_zps40c5f0ff.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9859_zps40c5f0ff.jpg.html)

I don't want the intercooler moved forward as it means modding the bumper, changing the manifold to a custom job is going to be £650, so I think ill try the 3rd option and see how much room that creates.

Heres some more pics with the rad fitted and tipped out at the top, this is only possible with the rad over slightly to miss the end tanks of the intercooler. More mods to that will follow too. The rad fans will have to go on the back side for this also.

looking on ebay there about 10-13cm taller than a nova one, I did search for some others but nothings shouting out at me.

that is one of my options benn, have been messing with the turbo today to alter the wastegate arm. I need to cut the slam panel about before I can try the grille, didn't want to do that until I had a final position for the turbo/manifold.

There's a place in Hereford called Hereford metal finishers. There down by CMC tuning if you've ever been there, their small industrial estate is opposite taylor lane timber frame on the rotherwas bypass.

I had this little lot done for a tenner. one or two parts havnt come out the best but I think its was because thy were quite rusted and pitted.

I know what you mean, would be nice to keep it straight out the turbo to hide it behind the rad, but there wont be no room. I think above the gearbox like jonlem corsa is the next option.

After getting my manifold and flange back from the engineer, I set about welding them together again. The manifold flange was taken down to 7mm and the head flange to 5mm. Gaining around 9mm in total

Both clamped together and welded together, all the ports had to be opened out to match head flange to give a smoother flow.

I offered the manifold up onto the engine again and although it gave me more room I wasn't happy with it. The compressor housing was now closer to the dipstick tube mount which would require alteration now. This along with having to cut more of the slam panel off than id like has now resulted in me binning this idea. Manifold is for sale if any body is interested. I have thought about changing turbo set up to something with a t3 mount.

Speaking to james middleton (jonlem) about the evo manifold his company makes had led to me to stick with the evo turbo. He was kind enough to send me out a template jig of the aforementioned manifold to check for space.

Measuring the difference in depth shows roughly half an inch of improvement, along with it being in an inch or two over to the offside.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN9936_zpsqcy8grtd.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSCN9936_zpsqcy8grtd.jpg.html)

All bolted together with the radiator and intercooler fitted. The half inch difference in depth of the manifold has created the same amount of space between the rad and turbo wastegate arm. Im hoping the engine wont rock too much damaging the rad, I now have a solid rear mount fitted which should help. There is also 40mm of room behind the turbo compressor cover and block, which is ideal for when I go to a bigger turbo. Which im thinking of a td06sl2 20g or 25g.

bought some silicone hoses for making up a new boost pipe from the turbo to intercooler, have also bought some 19mm hoses and aluminium pipe to fabricate the coolant hose that will run inside the cockpit up to the bottom of the corsa c expansion bottle.

Brilliant progress Bruce and an enjoyable read, fingers crossed the new manifold solves all the issues you've come up against. I love the colour of it too, has made me think twice about painting mine Arden blue, I think the darker blues suit them a lot better.

update

Soooo....ive managed to take the car off the trailer to start on the nitty gritty and try to make it to pvs '15.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0072_zpsukntoyka.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0072_zpsukntoyka.jpg.html)

one little job was to modify my intercooler brace to gain some more clearance if I can possilbly keep my rad fans on the front of the rad.

I cut the centre part off and re-welded it at the front which has gained an inch of room, also managed to try out the and blaster I made at work. Its now got a coat of black on it instead of the grey.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0064_zpswqh4uaif.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0064_zpswqh4uaif.jpg.html)

Also, bought some new parts. A 0.5L oil catch tank, a new swirl pot with AN fittings and various fittings for the fuel lines. Why I bought these will become apparent in a mo.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0066_zpszeltxtal.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0066_zpszeltxtal.jpg.html)

The swirl pot I had fitted was to be used with push on fuel hose, this would be fine If I didn't have Teflon fuel hose. I did try to clamp it with the hose clips, but it wouldn't go tight enough.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0071_zpsjbgawoaf.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0071_zpsjbgawoaf.jpg.html)

Debating whether to change to rubber hose would just fall short of buying all the correct fittings for the Teflon hose and selling the swirl pot almost paid for the new one. not a bad result.

All hose end fittings attached to the hose after I managed to master the technique.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0084_zps55pyy5e6.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0084_zps55pyy5e6.jpg.html)

Hoses fitted and routed, need to figure out away to secure the twin hose holders down to the floorpan. Plans are to drill them out to accept an m4 bolt and then use a rivnut mounted in the floor to screw it to.

fuel pumps fitted and wired in, used a new 30amp relay with some 30amp wire.

This pic doesn’t show the lift pump as I had issues with a broken union when I tried to swap it for the correct one.

next item on the agenda was the cooling system, a few pages ago I said I was going to use a corsa C expansion bottle up the scuttle. Before I had the bay painted I drilled the relevant holes to route the piping, now was the time to see if the holes were in a rough place to make a pipe.

Starting off with the 45degree hose cut down and fitted with a short piece of aluminium pipe to feed into the cabin.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0097_zpspsimvcw0.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0097_zpspsimvcw0.jpg.html)

Inside the cabin a 90degree hose was cut down and fitted to the previous pipe along with another alu pipe poking out into the engine bay. All that's left is to connect a hose from the rear of the water bar upto the bulkhead.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0100_zpszin0okk4.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0100_zpszin0okk4.jpg.html)

The catch tank has been fitted to the o/s inner wing with a rivnut fitting on the front panel. Access to the bumper bolts will be fiddly but manageable. Just need to order up some hose and fit/route it.

Was that giving it grief or general driving?

Only solution would be to use a 90deg steel bend, but i couldnt find one available in the correct size

Update

So PVS has passed and the car never made it, a lot of progress has been made though and it shouldn’t be long until I can try fire it up.

Here’s an update of what’s been going on since the last update…

The oil catch tank got plumbed in coming off the large breather from the cam cover.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0130_zpsjcdksikx.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0130_zpsjcdksikx.jpg.html)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0131_zpsyrwrotaj.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0131_zpsyrwrotaj.jpg.html)

A new battery was fitted which gave me a reason to get my gauges all lit up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0153_zpsgz3vp0ws.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0153_zpsgz3vp0ws.jpg.html)

The whole interior z-let loom needed to be wired in and hidden under the dash, there’s a whole lot of wiring here!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0151_zps23kziqnx.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0151_zps23kziqnx.jpg.html)

Have bought some new tyres for the rear which will do a better job for potential track days, these are yoko ad08’s in a 185/55/15. Slightly narrower than the ao48 I have on the front which seem too wide for a reasonable stance on the rear.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0661_zpsq10a1fxq.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0661_zpsq10a1fxq.jpg.html)

I sent my intercooler off to James Middleton (jonlem) to have a couple of pipes welded to it and a map sensor port. Done a top job getting this sorted, will make things much neater in the bay as before I had to use a 90degree hose off the intercooler which was always a concern due to them rubbing the chassis legs.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0226_zpsk41whoun.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0226_zpsk41whoun.jpg.html)

James also sorted me out a new manifold, its an absolute piece of art. Made out of t304 schedule 10 pipes and 304 water jet cut flanges. Being a tart I thought id take some proper pictures of it before it gets used. Lol

I had to replace the standard studs on the head to some shorter ones as they were too long and would foul the manifold. Got the manifold fitted along with the turbo.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0228_zpsnt4jhfac.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0228_zpsnt4jhfac.jpg.html)http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0235_zps2griuczv.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0235_zps2griuczv.jpg.html)

Trial fitted the intercooler and radiator for clearance and seems good, roughly 15/20mm of room.

Having some spare stainless exhaust pieces kicking about I decided to use this for my down pipe, in reality I should use a 3inch down pipe along with a 3inch exhaust, but beggars cant be choosers as funds are rather tight at the minute. Added to these parts were a new flexi, flange and 90degree.

As my radiator sat forward roughly an inch and a half the standard nova top hose wasn’t long enough, I didn’t want to cut and extend it as its another join as a potential week link. I ordered a corsa b xe/let conversion top hose which is slightly longer. Done the job perfect!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0278_zpslzpzzyk5.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0278_zpslzpzzyk5.jpg.html)

A polished dipstick tube was fitted also as I stupidly cut my original up trying to fit that other manifold.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0276_zps4vzgdmei.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0276_zps4vzgdmei.jpg.html)

10inch radiator fan fitted to replace my 2 7inch fans I used to run on the front, having moved the radiator forward was the cause of this but it was an easy fix.

I wasn’t sure where I was going to get the AFM and the filter to sit, I new I didn’t want it on show that much or pointing upwards across the boost pipe, using the bends I had left from making my down pipe I was able to use 2 90degrees to point it across the top of the gearbox. This is now painted black.

Dump valve fitting welded onto the boost pipe, kinda hides the DV out of the way for a more subtle look.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0281_zpsgdccocrg.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0281_zpsgdccocrg.jpg.html)

MAP sensor wiring extended and MAP sensor fitted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0282_zpsbec7zttj.jpg[/UR

I’ve also replaced the fuel sender gasket as it was leaking, doing this made me accidentally break a wire on the sender. This got soldered back on and then tested by filling up with some shell v-power nitro. It will get mapped on this for a slight gain in performance.

Attempting to fit the slam panel back on showed a very snug fit with the manifold, its very unfortunate
that I had to cut it but needs must. Finished the edges off with some rubber trim.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/BCD_9491_zpscv6dthvy.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/BCD_9491_zpscv6dthvy.jpg.html)

Postie came round again to drop off some more pipes/hoses for the boost pipes.

The turbo to intercooler pipe was fun to figure out as the original intention was to run it next to the down pipe but there wasn’t any room. Using the 2 90degree stainless bends gave me a useable setup.

Finishing up like this for the week end just past. Having put fuel in has a given me a couple of leeks on the fuel system. One being the second hand 044 pump and another on one of the braided lines. A new pump has been ordered and the braided line had a the union taken off and refitted.

Some good news in that it now starts but doesn't like to stay running, have got a few fault codes to sort out which will hopefully solve this. Although it has a map currently in the ecu it may be a cause from this as some of my engine differs from what the map was specified to before I got the management.

Be nice to get it running correctly for retro rides.

Sorry for the late reply, aiming for a reasonable 350hp, the turbo starts to max out at 380ish so it'l be a nice figure for now. :)

An update is due, havnt got round to doing it just yet.

update

I'm finally getting round to giving this an update, although its not in depth and I have done loads of other bits in between, I've either forgot what I've done or its not that important.

first off, the car now runs. The map that was in the z-let ecu wouldn't let the engine run correctly due to it having different injectors and throttle body. I bought a set of 20 maps off ebay to let me run the car up to temp and check everything was ok. A standard map was no good, so I flashed in the last one which is spec'd for 360-380bhp apparently. The car now idles perfect, gets to temp, fan kicks and off etc. Getting it mapped will fine tune all of it hopefully.

I was never happy with my rose jointed gear linkage I made as it was too stiff on the joints, even lubing them up didn't help. I'm putting this down to buying expensive rose joints from a bearing supplier and wer'nt meant for the job I intended. I sold my old linkage and wanted to improve upon at least some of the sideways slop on my standard one, so I bought a pair of cheap rose joints off ebay. I made up only the sideways bar using the joints and threaded bar and fitted it to the linkage. I'm now very impressed with the slop that's been taken out, I'm tempted to do the rest of the linkage now I know where I went wrong with the first linkage.

With the manifold being so close to bonnet, I was unsure if over time it may melt the external paint. I bought some heat reflective material and stuck it on, hopefully it will have some effect on bonnet temps

Also purchased a new air filter for my 80mm vxr maf.

After looking at the bay I was swaying towards tidying it up even more than it was, my z-let loom I fitted was bugging me slightly as I new I could shorten it some more and take away the length of loom that runs in front of the injectors. That way I could have the injector wiring come from under the manifold. With plenty of time to do it I stripped the loom back off and spent a few evenings shortening it.

I removed around 18inches from the hole centre of the loom, extended and shorted some sensor wiring. I also shortened the interior dash loom for the z-let management, there's minimal items that need to be run inside so it was easier to take more from this.

I started to browse the articles section on here and had a good read through the rack removal while I situ. When the engine was out last time I replaced my original rack with another nova rack, this one didn't have any up an down movement in the bushes inside the rack, so I was happy. But, I couldn't help but want to find and fit a corsa epas 2.7 turn rack. I spoke to my local motor factor that I have an account with, giving them a reg from a corsa that had epas fitted. I explained I wanted a 2.7 turn rack and they sent me one out, only it was a corsa C rack, a phone call back to them and they then sent me out a 4 turn corsa B rack. Another phone call and they said they couldn't help me, nobody listed a 2.7 turn rack for a corsa b. It was proving hard to find one from online breakers as they all offered me a column as soon as I mentioned corsa and epas, disregarding me saying rack. I had a bit of luck and found one via a facebook friend.

Stripped, painted and modified the column connector, both nova track rods/rack ends fitted too.

The next thing on the list was my brake pipes in the engine bay, I didn't like how they were routed and could benefit from positioning them differently.

My front BCS (boost control solenoid, which is fitted at the rear) didn't have the one vacuum hose connected to anything, I thought it would be ok to vent to atmo, but I've since has some advice and been told to return it to the intake side of the turbo. I bought one of these silicone hose take offs for this as it was an easy fix rather than finding a suitable tube and weld it to the intake pipe I made.

The red cesaros I have fitted are my only set of wheels since my softstars got stolen a few years ago, I've always wanted grey wheels but didn't want to commit to paint the red ones as I still quite like the colour.
I bought some plastidip in gunmetal grey, painted two wheels with one can(minus centre caps).

The last pic does look quite dark and how I hoped it would come out, but it isn't. Its too light for my taste and doesn't match the trim.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/BCD_7052_zpsymtox3f3.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/BCD_7052_zpsymtox3f3.jpg.html)

Plans are to bite the bullet and paint them with the grey the trim is in or BMW sparkling graphite. If you look at the pic right at the bottom of this post, the n/s wheel got covered in exhaust soot after I done an emissions test on a defender at work, the soot didn't really want to come off, although its made it darker and better than before. lol That's more the colour I would like.

Things left to do:

Buy and fit a oil pressure gauge and rev counter. (the z-let tacho wire doesn't like a nova tacho)
Mapping which I hope I can get done in a couple months.
I was planning water meth but moneys tight at the moment after having a beautiful little girl.
Tidy up and paint any trim
paint my wheels grey
Remount my lift pump as its hella noisy with vibration.
plus anything else that rocks up.

In the mean time I have taken a couple proper photos of the car, so enjoy. :d

I do like a smoothed GTE rear bumper; lots of work exhaust side, but biggest gain is from ditching the 90 degree abomination standard inlet. F28 should be loving all the torque!

...Those rods should come with arps?

Yeh you had mentioned before, it will get addressed at some point.

I had the option to add arp's, but as i had some i thought that would be ok, i didnt know they were differant thread.

update

So, i spoke to a friend who works in a body shop and he kindly accepted to take on my wheels to change the colour of them. As it was a foreigner he could prep them at his then just take them into work and spray them.

He got right to it, sanding back the red and improving upon my the centre caps i had previously smoothed.

I got him to show me some grey colour chips but my previous choice of the BMW sparkling graphite still shouted out to me.

As i havnt changed the oil since the engine rebuild i bought 25litres of cheap 10/40 and a couple of filters. I've changed the oil now and will do again after mapping and so forth up until i use it for some track/drag event.

When I bought and painted the wheels myself a couple years ago, I painted the inside black and the face red. Didn't see the point in painting the inside grey as its a dark colour already and wont really be seen.

I was tempted years ago to paint my softstars dark grey but as they were in such good condition I couldn't justify it. I loved the red wheels and would more than likely do another set red, but the calipers clashed with them, the grey does look awesome though.

I was tempted once upon a time, mainly due to other comments about it, but I do like the look with out it grey. I've never set out to keep it completely original, just going with what I like the look of.

update (excuse the bad phone pics)

I managed to get a few days off a couple of weeks ago to do some more work to the nova, hopefully getting it somewhere near to bring to PVS.

I trailered it over to work so I could take advantage of the ramps and work shop facilities.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/BCD_7594_zpst16ngbz5.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/BCD_7594_zpst16ngbz5.jpg.html)

First of all I wanted to tackle the rear gearbox mount, as my gearbox already has one heli-coiled hole and one hole broken off (please see a few pages back for that fix), I wanted to strengthen it up some more as ive seen some f28's rip them selves apart from the torque.

I made a plate to bolt to the rear of the gearbox, then I tacked it onto the nova mount. I also tacked all the conversion spacers to the mount as this will save time on assembly any time I take it off.
I then removed the mount completely and welded it all together.

Realistically I wanted to triangulate the red shaded portion, unfortunately I couldn't do this as my one mount bolt goes all the way through the casing and has a nut on the back side. I wouldn't be able to get a spanner on it If i was to cover it up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_7603_zpskmpu65yr.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_7603_zpskmpu65yr.jpg.html)

After that was finished I started to make a new scuttle cover, my original from a few years ago was made from hard board and covered in faux leather. My boss had some plastic sheet left over as he makes his autograss arches out of this stuff.

Cut out the rough shape with tin snips and then covered it again with faux leather.

Next on the list was tracking, as I didn't want to scratch my cesaros I popped on some old wheels. Reppin the GTE steels. lol

The car is silly low at the moment and I wouldn't intend use it on track as it is, I adjusted the track to where it had to be. The other figures I'm taking with a pinch of salt and Ill try adjust those at a later date when I plan to use the car. The rears another story as I was hoping they would be some where near the same but the nearside has a degree of more camber. Yet again the rear is fairly low too, so the angles will change when its adjusted up.

A lot more items have been fettled with but I never took any photos, I gave the car a hell of clean ready for PVS. Clayed, polished, waxed, vacuumed etc etc.

Since then ive taken the engine and dash looms back out, a) to tidy/shorten them and b) to try solve my management problems.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_7634-2_zpsuktyxxwu.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_7634-2_zpsuktyxxwu.jpg.html)

When I bought the management, its always had 2 fault codes stored for the front lambda heater circuit and the rear boost control solenoid.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_7624-2_zpsmz0iwxnw.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_7624-2_zpsmz0iwxnw.jpg.html)

I stripped some of the loom back and done a lot of continuity checks and I'm quite satisfied that no wires are broken, I had found that the one heater wire for the front lambda was actually on the rear lambda.(not running a rear lambda) A cut and resolder of both wires has hopefully solved that one.

Going back and forth to the wiring diagram shows the rear boost control solenoid wire goes into plug A (dash loom) pin 50. The dash loom plug doesn't even have a pin in no.50. I couldn't find any more wiring diagrams and the only info I could find about the rear bcs was on a corsa c forum. The Rear bcs isn't part of the engine loom on the z-let, for some strange reason its part of the start/charge loom. Although I had the one wire found on the engine loom (thanks to the corsa c page), I didn't know where it went, I continuity checked all pins on the ECU connector and it turns out its pin no.50 on this plug, plug B. Autodata sucks balls!!!!!

As per the corsa page, you take your rear bcs plug and 2 wires, wire the one to pin no.50 and the other to a black live wire from the ecu. As some may know, a mod on the z-let is to bypass the rear bcs but leave it plugged into avoid a fault code. Instead of buying the wiring and the solenoid I went to maplin and bought the correct resistor to solder inline to trick the ecu.

A common item on the z-let's are the AFM, MAP and coolant sensors earth playing up. 4 small earths connect together through a crimp and has been known to play up, as I had the loom out I couldn't just leave this due to it being a potential failure in the future.

Update.

The novas back up and running, the fault codes are now gone after my wiring mods. Only downside is that the engine sounds like it has piston slap. I think this is due to the fueling being mega rich, washing the bores and wearing them out. Looks like the motors got to come back out. :-(

update

It's been quite a period with out an update, not much to ramble on about except for attending a couple of shows which some of you had experienced your selves.

Pvs was the first show in 3 years that I've taken the nova too, with it being in pieces most of the time it was a great delight to show it off again. The weather wasn't the greatest and it did put a downer on the day as there wasn't any strip action, but enjoying people walking past and admiring the car felt awesome.

The plans were to attend billing but the clutch in my Vectra had started to slip which put me out of the game towing the nova around, with retro rides lurking I had to fix it, so a LUK flywheel and clutch were ordered and fitted them the weekend before the show.

I hadn't touched the nova since PVS, a quick jump start and popped it on the trailer to take to work so I could clean it again.

Update

Here’s an update on some of the parts I’ve been collecting for the winter rebuild.

A box full from AutoVaux including a VXR/Z20LEH oil pump and gasket, a new 8v sump gasket/baffle, z20let head gasket and various oil seals.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9931_zpsny8fnczc.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9931_zpsny8fnczc.jpg.html)

Have also bought some Omega 87mm pistons, a 13 row oil cooler, 875cc Deka injectors to replace my 630cc’s and a 90mm MAF housing.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/Screenshot_20160909-073951_zpsirkfwf1q.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/Screenshot_20160909-073951_zpsirkfwf1q.jpg.html)

Only parts left to get before I can build it back up is the modified pick up pipe for the vxr oil pump, some new big and mains bearing shells and then a bigger turbo to the td05 I currently have.

I’m still awaiting to take my block and crank up to phillip for the rebore and crank regrind, I’ve had another non car related project on the go that’s taken funds away from this unfortunately.

I’ve been tinkering with an inlet manifold that I’ve been making over the past couple of months which will replace my standard item, hoping it should free up a few more HP along the way.

I started out with buying a steel flange and making various calculations and lists with items I needed to build my own inlet, I would love an aluminium item but with the cost of them being 3-4 times more than this tallied up, it was a no brainer. Plus if I want to add anything I can break out the mig and crack on, with out paying somebody else for the pleasure. OK, weight is an issue but meh.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9553_zpsvolqlzly.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9553_zpsvolqlzly.jpg.html)

The flange came with a pre drilled hole for the return from the head but it didn’t have the water way from the inlet to the head, after reading a few threads with custom inlets it was recommended to add the 2nd water way to the flange.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9603_zpsvplxdxot.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9603_zpsvplxdxot.jpg.html)

I sourced some 45mm stainless tube for the runners, which I then squeezed the one end to make it oval so it sat nicely on the flange.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9601_zps90ul9kcx.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9601_zps90ul9kcx.jpg.html)

A small length of 18mm outer diameter with a 12mm inner was bought so I could make my own injector bungs. I couldn’t find any pre-made bungs in steel in this country and they weren’t exactly hard to make. The injectors are 14mm, ‘o’ rings were around 14.4mm, I found that roughly 13.75mm hole was needed to drill them out and for the injectors to sit in snugly.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9550_zpssng1tc6w.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9550_zpssng1tc6w.jpg.html)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9554_zps7nqn8dqo.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9554_zps7nqn8dqo.jpg.html)

Evo billet fuel rail, these accept 11mm injectors, so again this had to be drilled out for the 14mm injectors.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9626_zpshvhxlgr6.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9626_zpshvhxlgr6.jpg.html)

The bungs and runners were tacked down onto the flange with a trial fit of the plenum.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9611_zpsd9cpylcg.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9611_zpsd9cpylcg.jpg.html)

Clamping the flange down to some good thick flat steel, I welded all the way around the runners. It may not be pretty, but I’m hoping it seals.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_9628_zpsxr5v21yw.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_9628_zpsxr5v21yw.jpg.html)

what spacing are the injectors ports on the same as standard?

The evo rail uses the same injector spacing as the c-let.

Inlet manifold looks awesome. I'm planning on making a steel inlet myself so it's a nice bit of inspiration.

Top work mate.

Cheers, it may be heavier than alu but at least my wallets not been ripped apart.

Some of you have already seen on facebook, but for those who havn't I have had the car featured in this months Performance Vauxhall. Whats also great is that they are my own photos as I do a bit of photography as a hobby, a couple of discrepancies in the story about it, but other wise I m thrilled. :d:d:d

The engines still apart at the moment, so I should have an update with that in the new year. But, yeh, use it for some track days and actually have some fun driving it and not just showing it off at the shows.

Well done! The photos look really good. I never knew it has 380bhp. What's your quarter mile time?

That is a discrepancy in the story as I mentioned, it was discussed the potential power once mapped and the turbo I currently have maxes out at 380hp. But I guess it wouldn't be an interesting read if he had to explain all of that in the feature. I am going to a bigger td05 maybe td06 unit for 2017.

My best and last time I run in 2013 was 13.3s at 110mph, the story in mag does convey that I have used it recently, he just happened to use the 2013 drag racing as part of the story etc.

update

The rest of the engine got removed and stripped down, a trip to visit Philip so he could sort out the overbore to 87mm, crank check(which then got polished) and the block had a light skim.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_0260_zpswkeuptjr.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_0260_zpswkeuptjr.jpg.html)

He did give me some bad news in regards to the omega pistons I had bought second hand, which was that white metal was once present across the gudgeon pin, putting wear marks into the piston. New gudgeon pins may have been fitted but a light tapping in the engine may occur, I wasn't too happy with this so I then bought a set of new 87mm wossner pistons.

Following the instructions provided with the pistons, I gapped the rings and then got the pistons fitted to the rods.

Before I made my inlet I read a couple of WIP threads with how they managed to still use the 3rd outlet of the 3 way hose. I'm unsure if it would cause an airlock or higher engine temps, but if it was there from factory then i thought it would be best to have it.

An inch to 10mm adapter was sourced and fitted.

update

I trailered the nova over to work (with out the blue tarp Stuart) so I could set about slipping a certain motor into a certain hole.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2709_zpsxlht9uju.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2709_zpsxlht9uju.jpg.html)

Flywheel and clutch fitted.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2717_zps7wldejpz.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2717_zps7wldejpz.jpg.html)

Gearbox man handled on.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2721_zps20jglshy.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2721_zps20jglshy.jpg.html)

And eventually it went in, it took a bit longer than normal due to my new inlet hitting the brake reservoir. Which meant I had to remove some fitted items to get it down and in.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2722_zpsv0bueb5m.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2722_zpsv0bueb5m.jpg.html)

A new 90mm inletted air filter fitted to the 90mm MAF, makes it more of squeeze to sit above the gearbox. I will at some point get a different inlet pipe made up and maybe a intercooler to top hat pipe. See below for the temporary IC pipe.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2725_zpsujics2oi.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2725_zpsujics2oi.jpg.html)

Oil cooler filled up with oil and sat on top of the intercooler atm. I need to move it over to the middle more as the grill doesn't really fit now, it just needs a longer line which I will add to the 'to do' list.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2736_zpsggslwvqm.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2736_zpsggslwvqm.jpg.html)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2735_zpsen8c5tm9.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2735_zpsen8c5tm9.jpg.html)

Temporary pipe fitted, as my one original pipe wasn't long enough I extended it. As above, I would like to get possibly a one piece top hat down to the intercooler.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2738_zpsr7rrysoi.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2738_zpsr7rrysoi.jpg.html)

So time came to try fire it up, I had to change the map in the ecu to a standard z-let one and leave the MAF disconnected. I turned on the fuel pumps and checked for leaks, which I did have. The injectors are leaking on the O rings. Balls!!! :tard:

As I had my old fuel rail about, I fitted it backwards (due to the feed pipe fouling the inlet) and added some spare hose to it so I can then try to start it again. Which it did.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2740_zpsuxxfyd90.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2740_zpsuxxfyd90.jpg.html)

Once running I let it run a for a couple of minutes then drained out the 10/40 I put in and filled it up with some running in oil and a new filter. I did the first fill with normal oil so any small particles that may be there would have a chance to be flushed out, instead of running the motor in with them still in there.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2742_zpsosbzjyt2.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2742_zpsosbzjyt2.jpg.html)

Once running a again, I checked it all over to notice I had a coolant leak from the inlet gasket. The nuts were nipped up and it seems to have stopped, this will be checked upon again.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2744_zpsuocwcfwr.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2744_zpsuocwcfwr.jpg.html)

And a small test drive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpL0xlgN36c

Things to do before mapping:

Geometry
Swap out my boost nipples to longer ones
Move the oil cooler, make a bracket for it and tie it into the slam panel.
Sort my fuel leak on the purple rail

Plenty to do with only 2/3 months before the first event (excluding the spring action day that is)

Thanks for looking.

I cant remember off the top of my head what it measures at, but apparently it isn't uncommon to see 0.4-0.6mm above the deck. It depends on what head gasket you use too, a z-let one compresses to 1.2mm.

The Z20LET Lovers Race Wars event that I'm doing in may requires the car to have a valid MOT just to say its road worthy.

Emissions all good for an MOT, as it hasn't been mapped yet there is quite a bit of unburnt fuel.

Update

I kept it quiet that I was taking the nova for mapping as I was uncertain if it would come back in one piece. Lol

It was a 4 hour drive down to see Rabbid Remaps, he set about working his magic on the car so he could put a ‘tune’ (American voice ‘toon’) in the ecu.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2840_zpsb76rbaqq.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2840_zpsb76rbaqq.jpg.html)

As I fitted the 875cc injectors the night before, it rendered the car immobile as the map currently installed wouldn’t let it start. He added a file to the ecu to accommodate the larger injectors and the 90mm MAF, this allowed him to start it and get it onto the rollers.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_2849_zpstj4he5sl.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_2849_zpstj4he5sl.jpg.html)

A test run to see how well the engine was working along with all the sensors, at 10psi which was gate pressure gave me 259bhp at the flywheel. Not too shabby.

A bit more fettling

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/BCD_3331_zpsb5anxrkq.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/BCD_3331_zpsb5anxrkq.jpg.html)

And the final figure for the day was 308bhp and 300lbft @ 1 bar of boost. I was a little disappointed as it appears that either my actuator is faulty or the penny valve isn’t sealing correctly not allowing the turbine to make any more boost. Nether the less it’s a good starting figure and there will be plenty more to come later on in the year.

Although I wasn’t grinning like a Cheshire cat, once I parked it back in the garage and gave it a rev it soon made me go ‘oh my dayzzz’. The poppin’ and bangin’ on lift off is a great noise, this made my day. Lol

Here’s a couple videos of the last session on the rollers.

https://youtu.be/ZaKM_yV3A-E

I had noticed that I was getting blue smoke on overrun, I think the stem seals may have gone hard sucking in oil under vacuum. This will get addressed at some point, as for the lack of power I think I may just use it for this year and try and fix the fault later on. If I alter anything now then theres a good chance id have to take it to be mapped again.
Thanks for looking

Just read through start to finish, what a machine, remember reading this back in about 2012 when I was actually working on mine, toyed with the idea of the same blue for my loon but I never got any further, great to see how far it's come since then

It's for ever evolving in some way, the bodywork stays the same though. lol

update

Few things have changed since the last update, I bought a standard actuator rod to fit and to double check all the internals of the actuator.

I found the internal piston had actually come loose from the rod, in turn undoing any preload on it. I have now loctited it in place. :d
I also forgot that I had the strongest actuator spring forge make inside it, the red spring is rated 17.5 - 20psi of gate pressure.

Actuator fitted with half a hole of preload.

After inspecting my actuator fault I found that the plastic sheathing that I used on the lambda and crank sensor wiring had melted due to its close proximity to the turbo/manifold, I bought some heat resistant sheath that should be upto the job.

I used lock wire to hold it in place.

I also did the headlight wiring across the top of the radiator and a few other bits of wiring close to the manifold.

Since I have the roll cage and the electric sunroof, ive never had a rear view mirror. I was unsure what model of car to get one from, but a corsa b one looked like it would do the job.

I got some sticky pads from a windscreen company (which turned out to suck balls) to fit the mirror in place. (no pics of it fitted yet)

When the car was on the dyno I noticed it had a small oil leak, which I thought was from the dipstick tube, but it turned out to be the dizzy blank. I had previously put sealer on the seal as it was past its best, but this obviously didn't work. Que a new seal, this was listed for an e16se dizzy.

Head checked for tightness, this was just the final stage torque of 70lbft IIRC, all were fine and none moved at all.

As the hawk eye four wheel alignment threw up dodgy readings last time I checked (out of calibration which has now been fixed), I wanted a way to check my camber/caster in my garage instead of having to take it to work. Ok, it may be crude but atleast its a reference point.

So I bought one of these.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3091_zpsm1xzt3mo.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3091_zpsm1xzt3mo.jpg.html)

And then I learnt a friend had this.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3092_zpsgyrukggk.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3092_zpsgyrukggk.jpg.html)

I tried the sealey one first as it had the caster already on there without having to turn the wheel and mess with nobs, but it wouldn't fit between the wheel bolts so this was made redundant.

I then calibrated my one to be level.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3093_zpstrhaepqe.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3093_zpstrhaepqe.jpg.html)

And then mounted on the disc to check for camber, which gave about 1 and 1/4 degrees.

Next onto the caster, I made a very very very rough calculation of 20degrees with some card. Turned the wheel 20degrees one way, mounted the gauge and set it t 0. Then back the other way with the steering 20degrees to get my caster reading. As I imagined from a previous go on the hawk eye, I have little caster on both sides. Not good. :( I think i'll have to invest in a rose jointed setup to get some extra adjustment.

I'll be taking the car to work on Thursday to give it the once over again and give it a clean as its filthy!

I have another mapping session on Friday and Race wars on Saturday (mile long drag/top speed run). All being well it should be a productive week.

Thursday

Prep for Z20let Lovers Race Wars.

At work Thursday bright and early.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3278_zpstnxvrkgj.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3278_zpstnxvrkgj.jpg.html)

I began by getting my 6th cesaro painted to match the other 5.

I bought another pair of yoko ad08's for any wet occasion that may arise, as the weather looked a bit bleak it wasn't a bad idea to have a back up pair of tyres instead of the a048's. These 2 went on my spare wheel and now this 6th one.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3263_zpsvbkwoi2y.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3263_zpsvbkwoi2y.jpg.html)

Also, my a048's were second hand when I got them, still having 3.8ish mm of tread, I spun them up on the balancer at work to notice they wernt quite true. As I planned to do 140+mph with the nova, I didn't want to take any chances.

So a new pair got fitted to the front wheels.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3279_zpsarwgnyml.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3279_zpsarwgnyml.jpg.html)

When I weighed the car at the quarry last year, I always wondered if that was the true weight. (940kg no spare wheel) My boss had bought a set of scales for his own race cars, so a perfect opportunity for me to get a correct figure for the nova.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3281_zpsmr2hehoh.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3281_zpsmr2hehoh.jpg.html)

Car on all corner scales.

no spare wheel and 25-30L of fuel. 930kg

With me in it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3286_zpslnpqt80y.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3286_zpslnpqt80y.jpg.html)

Pretty happy with the outcome as it was a little lighter than I first thought.

After all prep was done (fluid levels, visual check of components and most bolts checked for torque), I then spent the afternoon washing, polishing, waxing etc.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSC_3312_zpsvb9xtn4p.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/user/bachilds1988/media/DSC_3312_zpsvb9xtn4p.jpg.html)

And then it rained, the tarp had to come out as the spray that comes off the Vectra ruins the front end of the nova.

friday

Drove the 4hours to Rabbid Remaps again for him to work his magic and get me all the power I can have, I was feeling confident after fixing the actuator fault that I could see well into the 300+bhp.

On the rollers the car looked much more alive, when it came on boost (around 3500rpm) it sounded powerful and started to lift out of the rollers. :)

We went and had a ponder out side to which he followed shortly and said it looks like the actuators playing up again. After some visual inspection, I couldn't see anything wrong. He got a pump and put it on the actuators nipple, bad news was that it wasn't holding pressure. The diaphragm must have popped causing boost issues.

A little peeved, nothing could be done without changing the diaphragm. He mentioned that I could still use the car at Race Wars, with roughly the same power as the original map he done. This one had a little less boost and more ignition.

We left there and made our way up to Leicestershire to stay in a Travelodge the night ready for the next day.

Saturday Race Wars

Arriving at endrew Barracks all nervous and excited to use the car, its first use in four years
Being greeted with astra upon astra. All the folk were friendly and it was a cracking day.

The morning sessions were timed runs, which we got 3 goes each. The cars got fitted with a camera and a GPS box to measure top speed, 0-60, 0-100 and quarter mile times.

Each car had to do a sighting lap with a marshal to make sure we were safe, this was a good exercise as it got me used to the car and how it felt. I planned to make my first run a slow one, but this sighting lap got it out the way so I could concentrate on going flat out on all 3 runs.

First run- Launched off, car felt good. Pulled super hard from 3rd onwards, my speedo wasn't working so was unsure what speed I was doing (although it only goes to 120mph). I got into 6th at 6200rpm and then backed off 2-300meters before the line. The usb stick was taken into the building to watch back and see what top speed I got, what I didn't know was that the figure that counts is the one across the finish line, not the top speed anywhere within the mile. Boo!

I did 151mph, but 101mph across the line. But I did get a 5.39s 0-60.

Second run- Now I know the score, ill just got flat out! So I did just that, except 100meters before the line I heard a pop and the engine cut out. Rolled to a stop and the car wouldn't start up, looked under the bonnet and all was ok, looked under the car and a boost pipe had come off. Slipped it back on to get back to the pits to fix it.

I did do 155mph, but 146mph across the line

Third run- All or nothing now, launched off, again 3r gear and onwards it pulled hard all the way across the line. 6th gear at 6500rpm.

This netted me 157mph across the line!

The next half hour was nerve racking, is it enough for a trophy in my class? (250-400bhp)

The answer to that is yes! YES IT WAS!

1st place too! :d:d:d
