minor update

went and picked up my powder coated parts. all uber shiney in a gloss black. the tank has come out exceptional considering the state it was in.

took all my bits to assemble the rear beam at work

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/09112010201.jpg

got started on it today, cleaned up the mating surfaces for the back plates and stub axles so it all fits together nicely. got them bolted on and the anti roll bar back in. havnt got pics of this at the mo. hopefully get the poly bushes in and move onto making the brake pipes.

updates to come soon.

What bushes you using?

brucer
10-11-10, 07:36 PM
same as you, the ones from rally design. there so much easier to fit than the last crap ones i had from ebay. these just tap in, then you tap the rod through. the ebay ones you got to cut, grind and re-shape them before you press them in. gay...

Update

Have had a real good day today, got all of what I wanted to do done and more. Some hicups did crop up, but when don’t they.

My attention today was on the back end still. Plans were to get the beam back up with the coilovers fitted and hopefully the fuel tank back in. my day goes as follows…

Wire wheeled the fuel tank straps and painted them black. While waiting for the paint to dry I put some new foam on the tank. This is replacing the bitumen strips that’s normally on there. I used the foam I had spare from making the rear door cards, this was placed on top of double sided foam tape.
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0063.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0072.jpg

Fitted the old thin breather hose and new 13mm I.D hose for the big breather. Bought a meter of the hose as its got to reach up to where the fuel cap is now relocated to.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0095.jpg

Also fitted the sender unit and painted that black.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0096.jpg

On to the beam now. I bought 2 new wheels cylinders to fit to the back plates and made up 2 new brake pipes to mount onto the beam
Managed to get the beam back into place, the one side kept coming away from the mounting point every time I tried to get the other side lined up. How annoying!! Arrgh! Slipped the bolts in but didn’t tighten the nuts.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0081.jpg

Offered the coilovers up to see if they fitted….guess what?? They didn’t. id like to say I had to massage the body work in, but that would be a lie. I beat the shxt out of it to make them fit. Only to realise that once the beam is in the correct sitting postion, the coilovers move outwards creating more of a gap between the body.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0085.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0092.jpg

Back to the fuel tank now, got it up on the jack so I could position it right, fed the brather hose though the chassis leg and into the arch. Swung the straps around the tank and bolted it up.

Ill start sorting out the filler neck this week coming
As I don’t want the brake pipes ive made to go a funny colour or the nuts to corrode onto the copper pipe, I decided to paint them. Thought red was most suitable as that’s the accent colour for the car. Think they look rather good tbh.

Mate gutted you beat the inner arches! i did this very same mistake on my old GSi to then reallies that they moved out wards when the cars back on the deck, they do touch when the inners when the beams fully dropped/car jacked off the floor etc..

BUT apart from that mate it's looking really nice and clean..

thanks scott, was a real bummer. have gave the arches another lick of paint so they look the same as they did...kind of.

update

had a couple days off last week so got a little bit more done.

got the shoes, drums and hand brake cables back on. all lubricated where necessary and adjusted correctly. i painted the yoke on the which join both h.brake cables together as that was rusty as a mo fo.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0119.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0118.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0121.jpg

i made a move on with the rest of the brake pipes, flared the ends and routed them in the original clips. still yet to paint them as i got sort out the one niggle where the one comes across. will get that done at some point. drilled the holes for the male joiners to go through into the car. gave each drilled hole a dab of paint so it dont rust.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0243.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0244.jpg

moving further into the car, made up 2 more pipes with female ends and routed them carfully on the floor pan and up on the exhaust tunnel. both come out into the engine bay just below the brake servo. i riveted the pipes down using 'p' clips and aluminium rivets.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0252.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN0245.jpg

was going to make a start on the fuel pipes coming through the car but i couldnt decide where i wanted them to come out into the engine bay.

that will be this weeks progress if i get time to myself.

update

been a while since i updated this last, mainly due to the weather not allowing me to do much work. also having a brake pipe rust out on my vectra which didnt help matters. any way, on to the show....

since owning my vectra, ive known my brake pipes were quite corroded. i knew this 2 years ago but couldnt ever be bother to replace them. after going around a round about my hand brake light came on, checked the hand brake was off and gave it a wiggle incase the swith for the light was playing up. but to no avail, it never went off. pulled over and checked my brake fluid level, this was the culprit. went into work the nect day (saturday) to inspect my leak and the brake pipe that runs up above the rear suspension had corroded through. so i cracked on and lowered the rear subframe and removed the offending pipe. made up a new one, fitted and pressure bled the system. hooray, no more leaks.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/08012011023.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/08012011022.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/08012011024.jpg

gave the car a bit of a look over only to find this...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/08012011025.jpg

a few cable ties have sorted it for now. lol

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/08012011026.jpg

onto the nova, the filler neck has been my main priority as i knew this would take all my brain power to route and make it. i bought some marine grade fuel hose, 51mm and 38mm thickness. tough isnt the word!! cut up some sections and the old filler neck and try to arrange a decent lay out.

i had to bore out a 38mm hole for the fuel hose to pass though from inside the rear arch into the inside where the rear door card sits.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20012011042.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20012011039.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/20012011043.jpg

i got this far as a real rough start. i then purchased a 38mm 45 deg alloy pipe to sort out the rest of the pipe work. welded back on the breather pipe to the highest point of the first joint. once i was happy with it all i gave all the pipes a lick of paint to tart them up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/26012011055.jpg

my filler cap i had already stripped down due to needing to get a new set of keys for the barrel. ive also been in a pickle with what grey i want to use on the skirts, window surrounds and the fuel filler cap. i bought rover tempest grey and car plan grey 01. i tried the the car plan grey and to my surprise the colour is a god damn good colour. exactly the type of grey i was looking for. i never tried the other colour as i can return that now. :d

prepped, primed and painted both parts of the cap. re-assembled the barrel section of the cap and bought new stainless bolts for the mounting points on the cap.

Good work dude but I'd be a bit sceptical of that hose between the filler neck, in the back of my mind I'd be wondering when it'll split and fill up the inner wing.

brucer
27-01-11, 07:56 PM
thanks guys.

im not worried about the hose splitting tek, its 3 layers with a spiral wire all the way through it. it dont flex or bend so i dont think it will split. pic of said layers...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN1402.jpg

a fair few months ago i got a set of calipers and carriers off a vectra to use on the nova. they've been sat in the box since i got them and were'nt in the best looking state. i didnt fancy spending 15pound to have them shot blasted as i thought with alot of work i could get them back to bare metal and paint them.

without wanting to put too much elbow grease in, i thought id try some hammerite rust remover. cost a couple quid so gave it a go.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN1398.jpg

diluted the correct amount, plus a tagde more. left one of the calipers in there to soak for 24hours. when i took the caliper out it looked exactly how it did when i put it in. hmmm...washed it off and wire brushed it. surprisingly the rust came off quite well. the thicker layers off rust i used a wire wheel on.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN1400.jpg

came out like this....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/27012011064.jpg

got the other caliper and the frames to clean up next. then ill assemble the calipers with new seals once ive painted them.

went down to the car tonight to sort out the fuel pipes. got them laid down ready to be 'p' clipped and riveted down. got to flare the ends aswell so the fuel hose wont come off as easy. will be saturdays job.

Coming along well, edit, read a page back. You really want as few joins as poss on the fuel pipe work. The smell gets right thru the joins and it can leak like a sieve.

brucer
27-01-11, 08:10 PM
tbh benn i think it will have the same amount of joins as the original pipework. im just running it through the car to hide it from underneigth.

o.....i wasnt on the same page. haha.

ill see how it goes, if it becomes unbearable ill think about making one solid pipe. i dont have power down my garage so i cant tack a weld here and there on various pipes until i get it right, id be there weeks if i was to test fit one piece, take it to work and weld, try it back in the car, weld another bit on etc.

thanks for the info though :thumb:

update

got a good start on the car today, started on with the fuel pipes again. 'p' clipped and riveted them down to the floor pan. cut them to length either side were they come out, gave them a minor flare and put rubber grommets in the holes i made for them.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/29012011067.jpg

after this i got one of my softstars out to see how they would sit with the coilovers in postion...to my disapointment they didnt fit.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN14052.jpg

the wheel itself misses the spring but the tyre fouls the spring. ive always ran 205/40/16 tyres on this car but im going to have to try a 195/45/16. i think that should be all that it needs. im hoping....

so i put back on the gte/sr wheels so i can still move it about and dropped it back on the floor.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN14072.jpg

wound this side all the way down the shock to see how low it would sit, as far as i know these are standard length bodied ones.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN14162.jpg

i then turned the car around and stripped all the suspenion components off so i can get them ready for powdercoat.

yeh i lowered it back onto the ground and pulled the car to see if it rolled free and you could here the tyre rubbing.

the cut outs on the front are there kind of for a purpose, my intercooler ends stick further back than IC middle section. i just didnt ever weld in plates into those cut outs further back.

painted all the front suspension bolts, nuts and washers. yes i know once i tighten them up the paint will come off. but, they'll only need touching up rather than painting them all and getting paint on the car.

the knuckles have heat proof tape on the inside of them, still have to peel that off. under neigth should be the original surface.

im sure there will be some loss in strength but numerous people have cut and rewelded a peice in the cross member for the IC.

keith, im hoping it will be ready for june. funds really are limited and getting the engine built to a fully rebuilt spec will be a task. i may have to consider buying a ready built standard spec engine just to use for this year. hopefully not.

once ive got the front suspension back together ill get the headlining in, cage powder coated and fitted, dash, carpets and all the interior in.

drove down to cinderford yesterday to pick up this sunroof....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2297.jpg

bought off a nice chap called lee that was breaking a vectra. sorts out the sunroof for the nova. happy days.

this morning i set out to get my head lining fitted that i bought ages ago. i will hopefully do an article for it when i get round to it.

so i dug out the headlining (mmmmmm alcantara), the pegs and adhesive i had.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2301.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2300.jpg

temporarily pegged it all up. i was scepticle if it was going to fit correctly.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2308.jpg

i thought 40 pegs would be enough, but i was wrong. had to do small sections at a time to get it to fit nicely.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2318.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2326.jpg

i still have the front windscreen section to do and the rear tailgate bit to do.

i had to get my tailgate fitted as it needed adjusting on the hinges, as you know there under the headlining, hence i had to get it fitted before i finish the h.lining.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2322.jpg

its still bent on the one corner, damn couriers.

It was Faux Suede mate, got it from a fabrics factory they said it was suitable for that sort of application but after about 4 years of seeing the sun (mainly the rear C pillar and around teh opening of the boot) it faded.

This time I'm going for a Alcantara done professionally.

brucer
27-02-11, 07:51 PM
how much it set you back to make? 4years worth wouldnt be too bad if it was cheap. next time get tinted windows. lol.

mines alcantara so it should be ok for many years to come. :)

Nova_Tek
27-02-11, 08:39 PM
The one I made (which faded) only cost me like £20 in fabric (trade prices thanks to my Cuz). I made it using the original headlining as a template.

The new one will be Alcantara most probably and it'll be done whilse the seats ge re-trimmed.

update

evening all, a bit more of an update for you. i have been and collected some vital engine parts ive needed to start sorting my engine out. excellent service from cemex up in oswestry, top man and has a good knowledge of the c20let.

right then, have been sorting out some small parts of the interior trim which needed dealing with.

first of all was the floor grommets, after speaking to vauxhall they wanted a stupid price for each one of the grommets, so opted to tidy up my ones i had. these ones will be under the carpet so wont be seeing them. i have ordered 5 grommets as they will be on show where the rear seats used to be.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/09032011103.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/10032011104.jpg

gave them a wire wheel which took up the paint/underseal/grime.

after numerous attempts to get a sunroof windbreaker for the car i had to give up. my old one has broke on the one mounting point, but as i couldnt get another i had to reclaim mine. it still fixes on the one side and doesnt wobble about. so kind of a result. gave it a spray of black to tidy it up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2342.jpg

when i bought my sunroof glass i managed to pinch the inner surround seal. it was a very light grey and wouldnt have matched the headling at all. gave it a couple of coats of black spray and it came out like so...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2343.jpg

the electric sunroof switch/surround is getting modified from its previous state. it doesnt quite sit flush with the headlining at the front so i modified it like so...

ground off on both sides the tallest lip so it doesnt dig into the headlining so much.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/10032011105.jpg

it then needed to be straightened. i tried putting it in the sink with boiling water to soften it and bend it flat.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/10032011106.jpg

didnt realy work that well, i then got out the hair dryer and evenly heated it up across the bend point, i molested it until it came out pretty much how id like.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2344.jpg

havnt tried it in there yet but is on my list, dont know yet how to secure the front or which light i will be using. scrap yard here i come.

today i had a text from my powdercoater saying my cage and brace were all ready, got him to deliver them to me. im really chuffed how they came out, dont know what i expected them to come back like but i think they look great. the front section will get done when i need it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2337.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2338.jpg

trial fitted the brace back in, needs twisting around slightly to line the holes back up but other than that it can be bolted down for the final time.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2341.jpg

update to hopefully come on saturday, rear glass and cage should be going in. also the engine should have its long awaited strip down for the rebuild.

update

today i had a great day working on the car, got pretty much all i wanted to done. its coming along great at the moment.

to start off i got the rear glass and surrounds in. as usual i used the strip method and some small angled prickers to peel up what the string didnt.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2351.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2353.jpg

after that i coupled up the brake pressure bleeder i borrowed from work.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2345.jpg

had 2 leaking brake nuts, just needed another nip up and they held pressure. bled all four corners and left the pressure bleeder connected for 2 hours. fortunately the compressor inside it never came on once which indicated i had no leaks. result. have got quite a decent pedal now.

held pressure\/\/
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2354.jpg

once i was happy with the brakes i slipped the cage in, fastened it down with stainless cap head bolts.

one XE.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2366.jpg

whipped the head off and inspected it quickly. will take it to work and strip it down for the clean up and rebuild.

removed the sump, pick up pipe and baffle.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2374.jpg

the bolts on the crank pulley are mega rusty, didnt attempt to undo them as i will take it to work and try get them undone with any means necessary.

the only plastic primer they had in halfords was red, owell had to use it.

i then gave it a couple coats of satin black (as advised by nova_tek) and left it to dry. came back in the morning to find some parts had a reaction, havnt a clue why. so i rubbed down those areas and primed them again.

update

his week i got on with the engine, gave the block a wash inside and out, then air lined it dry.

cleaned up the crank and fitted the new mains bearings with plenty of oil. followed the procedure in the haynes manual using sealer on the rear bearing cap. torqued it down and hey presto.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/24032011123.jpg

removed the old rings off the pistons, cleaned out the grooves then fitted the new rings and shells

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/25032011124.jpg

got all 4 pistons fitted and temporarily attached to the crank as my ARP's hadnt turned up yet.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/25032011125.jpg

to which the ARP rod bolts turned up yesterday. have got to make a small chamfer on the conrod caps as per instructions.

today i got the block back on the stand awaiting the further rebuild

update

as mentioned from my saturday post i took the head to work for the strip down.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011129.jpg

rather grubby you may think, well its what i thought aswell.

removed the valves and set them up in some sort of order, gave them a wire wheeling ready to be lapped in.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011133.jpg

eventually found a 5.5mm allen key (7/32nd tbh) and undone the grub screws so i can eventually attempt the porous head mod. the head hasnt gone porous yet but id rather it didnt. passed a rod through it all it make sure it was clear.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011132.jpg

placed it in the washing off tank and scrubbed it clean

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011135.jpg

washed it off with the hose and air lined it dry. came out rather well.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011136.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/28032011137.jpg

i have started to clean up all the mating surfaces for the gaskets but havnt got pics of that.

cleaned up the xe cam and the let cam also.

update

continued on with the head, got all valves lapped in and assembled.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30032011139.jpg

got the XE inlet cam and LET exhaust cam bolted down and torqued correctly

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/30032011138.jpg

on with the porous head mod, went to b and q to buy the 8mm diameter aluminium tube.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/31032011140.jpg

cut a section down to near to 87mm as i could and tidied the end up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/31032011143.jpg

went to trial fit the tube in the head to see how much tapping it will need to go in, only to hear myself go DOH!!!!

the head has already been repaired before. i had noticed when i removed the head there was a warranty void sticker which i could barely make out. presumabley it was a re-con head.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/31032011144.jpg

not to worry, i returned the tube to b and q for a refund, even with a minor bit missing. lol also gave the head a paint of silver to spruce it up.

down my garages today to bolt the head on to the block, first i had to fit the arp rod bolts. had the conrod caps countersunk by a machine shop to accomodate the bolts. torqued them down using the supplied lube.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2483.jpg

after that i drilled out the relavent rivets off the Z20LET head gasket and fitted it to the block.

update

this week ive been receiving numerous parcels and sourcing parts from motor factors.

my friend down at LUK rang me to say my clutch and cambelt kit had arrived, so i trotted off down there to pick them up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2990.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2991.jpg

once getting home i opened up the cambelt kit to realise it was the later type, not the early like i asked for. knowing it would be way too much hassle to try get it changed (as i had to wait 2 weeks for this one to arrive) and it being friday i got one ordered from autovaux which should be here monday.

my order from jbi motorsport eventually turned up, thank god. got 2 vernier pulleys, bottom pulley and a heat shield. all very nice and shiney. also got the throttle body and top hat gaskets from vauxhall

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2995.jpg

the roose hoses i ordered also came, i ordered the turbo coolant, breather and ancillary kit.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN2992.jpg

spoke to a local motor factors and got my self a set of ht leads, plugs and a magic marley mahle oil filter. my injectors arrived also that i won on ebay. need to get them cleaned and checked for operation.

made a second trip down to the powder coaters to pick up cam cover, belt cover, rear gearbox mount and fuel pump mount.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3019.jpg

during the week i went down to fastening suppliers and picked up all the bolts for cam cover and belt cover. the bolts are A4 stainless but only charged me A2 stainless price. also got over sized washers for the belt cover but are too big. whats the correct size for them? these are 25mm wide.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3020.jpg

got the majority of everything bolted on and it turned out like this..

update

received a few things today, the correct cambelt kit, exhaust stud kit and ARP flywheel bolts.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/19042011179.jpg

armed with these i went down to my garages. found a problem with the TX autosport vernier pulleys though, they dont have the correct timing marks on them. one didnt have anything and the other had a mark in the wrong tooth.

i made my own marks going by the standard pulleys and set the timing like that. fitted the belt, tensioner and guide pulley.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3047.jpg

have got the XE inlet cam on standard markings for now, when i have it dyno'd i can get them to play around for max power. still getting a gain from it being on standard timing.

after that i fitted the exhaust stud kit. rather tasty.

fortunatley the door misses the filler cap.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3059.jpg

filled both the front engine mounts with lots of the black stuff

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/21042011186.jpg

now, some of you might remember what happened with my engine crane when i used it last. if not, check page one.

put a little thought into the strengthening of the legs, quite a cheap fix and hope it holds up. i got 2 3mm thick plates and bent the one edge up 90degrees to provide some strength to it if it decided to bend again. got some wide washers to spread the load even more from any stress of having the engine on the crane.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3065.jpg

with the weather changing rapidly and clouds starting to collide creating thunder i decided to call it a day. when trying to get the engine back in the garage i almost had a horrendous accident. the back corner of the crane lifted up off the ground due to having the engine lifted up about a metre. i managed to hold it from tipping but i need some sort of ballast holding it down. managed to get the crane back in the garage ready to fit straight in on monday hopefully.

this morning i went down my garage armed with some ballast to stop the crane tipping.

all full with water

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3073.jpg

got the engine in the air and tilted sideways ready for entry, brought the car closer to roll the engine into it. the crane was still bending.

update

it has been a few weeks since i last updated, due to me getting annoyed and couldnt be bothered to do much to it.

but, progress has been made.

purchased a 3month old forge actuator for the turbo

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3578.jpg

painted the turbo in heat paint (like mr tek has) and fitted the actuator.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3579.jpg

picked up my powder coated header tank which i had done in the same colour as the cam cover

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3628.jpg

pipercross air filter turned up also

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3629.jpg

after reading some reveiws on which tyres i wanted it was between toyo t1r's and uniroyal rainsport 2's. i opted for the rainsport 2's as they apparently have the same grip capability as the t1r's but last longer. plus there meant to be awesome in the rain.

so i got 3 ordered up at work as they had none in stock. the t1r's were in stock but as mentioned i didnt want those.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/09052011201.jpg

and fitted...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/10052011203.jpg

my forth alloy already has a t1r on so that takes care of the tyres and wheels.

my coilovers turned up from gaz, top blokes to deal with. had the fronts machined ready for the eccentric top mounts.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3630.jpg

removed the rears i already had and measured them up against the new shorter bodied ones. there's about an inch between them.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3588.jpg

got those on along with my wheels which i gave a clean and polish.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3636.jpg

dug out my top mounts which i had bought ages ago

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3631.jpg

fitted the top mounts on like so, from right to left.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3634.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3632.jpg

for future referance i measured the body for any body that wants to know it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3641.jpg

and the total length

after that i decided to move onto getting the seats back in the car, they need a damn good clean still but they were in the way in the garage.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3666.jpg

harnesses washed and attached in the eye hooks

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3668.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3679.jpg

moved on to 'p' clipping the wiring harness down to the inner wing. used aluminium rivits to hold them down.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3672.jpg

got rather bored after being down the garage so long so messed about with a few things, the main thing was this....

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3670.jpg

oooooooh it has power. :d thanks to my new battery i got from work.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3671.jpg

needed to check my boost hoses and intercooler still fitted. dont see why it wouldnt. :tard:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/05052011200-1.jpg

thats it really. its booked in the bodyshop on the 28th to have the rest painted, the exhaust needs sorting aswell which ill get done after the bodyshop. im still awaiting some small bits and pieces to get it running but hopefully shouldnt be too long now.

more updates to come soon.

update

saturday

during the week i had received some more goodies from the postman, unfortunately not a large cheque.

roosemotorsport sent me out a nice new top hose.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3683.jpg

mr silicone sent me some 8mm fuel hose, 13mm fuel hose and a selection of 't' bolt clamps, again, 'p' clips, fuel hose clips and polished stainless pipe for my bottom hose.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3682.jpg

fish tank one valves and 't' pieces for the vacuum tubing.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3684.jpg

also taken delivery of a gear linkage and tailgate pins. my rose jointed linkage is rather stiff to use so have given up on that one untill i get the car up and running. dont want to be messing around with it for it not to work. it doesnt self centre either as its too stiff. apparently thats what there like until they loosen up.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3681.jpg

modyfied the linkage to suit the f28, gave it a paint and fitted it. have all gears selectable but will need a test drive to confirm.

intercooler hoses on the inlet side fitted and clamped up. there not the neatest but i need the car on the road asap so untill i have more time and money to deal with it it will do.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3685.jpg

i gave up with taking pictures as i wanted to crack on, ill hopefully remember to describe what ive done.

fitted the radiator, top hose and IC support bracket

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3691.jpg

piped up all the vacuum hoses from the dump valve, hot start valve, turbo and amal valve. tried to hide as much of it as i could under the inlet

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3692.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3693.jpg

made up the bottom hose with 2 45 deg hoses and stainless pipe.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3704.jpg

to make things easy on myself and so i dont damage all the filler in the firewall im going to route the loom across the front of the turret and into the battery area. once there ill take it into the cabin.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3703.jpg

at this point i got it so it was cranking over. i still hadnt got my fuel lines in or pump on, didnt have a fuel pump relay or the top nut for the oil feed. so i left it and went home

after contacting will foy i made a very late run down to his at 10pm to arrive at 11pm. picked up the aforementioned so i could make a move with trying to fire it up on sunday.

et voila

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3705.jpg

brucer
24-05-11, 09:25 PM
sunday

dug out my fuel pump and gave it a clean. the fuel reg thing was way past its best and all i had was my battery drill to try clean it. it wasnt going to happen. so for now it will do.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3707.jpg

made up all my fuel lines and mounted the pump into the powder coated bracket. had also bought 4 litres of fuel for 6pound. all i could afford. lol

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3711.jpg

so after some cranking to try get oil pressure it wasnt happening. the light on the dash wasnt going out and none was coming out of the turbo return. so decided to strip some parts down to check why i couldnt get pressure. the relief valve on the oil pump was free and moving. there was oil at the start of the oil feed for the turbo so was at a loose end. i cracked off the oil feed nit on the turbo and cranked to make sure oil was getting through. it was so tightened it back down. cranked again and i got oil pressure!!! it was air locked at the turbo, i was so pleased i had sorted it. didnt fancy stripping the engine back down.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3716.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3715.jpg

after that i went to fire it up. it cranked and cranked, eventually heard a pop, to my delight its what i wanted to hear. after some more cranking it attempted to start. after some more it ran a bit better and so on and so on. it doesnt stay running for long, longest i had was around 20secs. my exhaust isnt on so no lambda. my amal valve is wired up, the EML light isnt wired up yet so im hoping once i get those sorted it may run better. but time will tell.

the cars off to the bodyshop on the weekend so tonight ive been sorting the panels out.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3719.jpg

some messing around later it looked like this

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3720.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3726.jpg

that isnt the bumper ill be using, was my test bumper. im yet to cut up the one ill be using.

one thing im concerned about it the red mesh in my bonnet. is it too halfords? if so, what do i replace it with? i like the red as it helps compliment the other red on the car.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3728.jpg

at the moment ive ran out of thoughts in my head, yet again ive most likely missed something so please ask any questions if need be.

Great work, I bet you'll be well happy when it's all done and should look perfect when back from the painters and all the panels matching.

What an earth will you be using the 13mm hose for? I'm still waiting for my bracket for the fuel pump. Good ol' eBay, knows exactly when to funk up and mess ones plans.

Is your rocker powder coated black? or is it grey? Looks grey in the pic but either way looks great. I'd do the mesh in black or body tbh, looks a bit... you know.. in red... sorry!

it should look great once done, having problems getting holder of my painter though. keep trying him but it seems like he's disapeared off the face of the earth.

the 13mm fuel hose comes from the tank to the pump. the pumpe then changes the outlet to 8mm hose.

the cam cover is indeed powder coated grey, the light does play tricks with the look of it.

Coolio, does look good in grey. Hope that 13mm hose bends well without kinking as IIRC there is a bit of a bend round from the tank into the pump (that's how I remember anyway.

Did you still need the hazard switch?

brucer

i do still need it, i will definately have it off you some time soon. lol

i have the 13mm hose coming straight out the sender over the rear beam, held on by a 'p' clip to the spare wheel well and into the pump. the 8mm hose that comes out of the pump has got to do a 180degree turn on itself.

update

this is going from a couple weeks back now, the deadline to get it to the bodyshop was lurking so i started it clean up some of the panels. the tailgate needed to be welded up and to clean off all the sticky stuff where the old spoiler was attached to it.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3730.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3731.jpg

cleaned up the back of the spoiler ready to be stuck down to the tailgate.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3729.jpg

also wire wheeled and jet washed the sealer and dirt from the inside of the wing. the insides being painted so needed to be clean.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3732.jpg

havning both fans i fitted them onto the radiator. the intercooler mounting bracket had to be modified slightlyas it was a bit taught on the fans. both wired up to blow air through the rad.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3733.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3747.jpg
boost pipes finally fitted securely

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3734.jpg

extended the wiper motor wires and shortened the horn wiring as it now just runs in the battery area and not all around the engine bay.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3759.jpg

i decided how i wanted to run the engine loom, after seeing how edd had done his i gave it a go. the loom plug is the worst part to get into any hole. using a hole saw i cut 2 holes then elongated it to suit.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3745-1.jpg

its a very tight fit getting all the loom through the hole and to the right of the brake pedal, but after half hour and a broken back later it was in place.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3748.jpg

trying to sort out my engine problems i ordered a new pump, coolant and air temp sensor.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3761.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3760.jpg

i tested the pump on a battery before i fitted it, the pump didnt work. but i thought id get it on just incase it needed some fuel to help get it going. it was worse than the other pump i had so thats got to go back.

i now have a sytec pump which works off a battery (havnt tested on car yet) and a new fuel rail reg as i mine is still the XE one.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/09062011221-1.jpg

whilst inbetween all that ive painted the door catches in the same grey as the fuel cap, window surrounds and skirts.

Good progress Bruce, bet you're glad it's at the shop now it'll feel more like it's complete when it's out. That's a very good idea on running the loom. It did occur to me to route it that way (didn't see Edd'd thread) but I was thinking if it'd be worth doing it the normal way (i.e. by the battery) It would stay dryer in that position and it'll mean less clutter. Something I'll need to consider really.

Is that pump in internal pump that you're gonna run external? Looks slimmer than a normal pump.

that doesnt sound promising to be fair, if i was you i'd just turn up and remove the car asap with no warning, you should get it painted elsewhere as he'll just rush it and its got to be the most important part of the build, in my eyes if your paying them for a job in its a half arsed effort, especially if hes avoiding the fone then they aint worth spitting on let alone giving them your money,no matter how good they are:d

update

has been a hell of along time since an update. as my previous posts the painter had the car alot longer than what he first said. i now have the car back with some interesting updates for you all. here we go.

i picked up the car from the bodyshop to take it have the exhaust made. the car still needs polishing and colour sanding as the reflection isnt the best, will get done at a later date. didnt take the panels that day as i had no where to put them and didnt want them getting damaged.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN4430.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN4431.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN4426.jpg

on to the exhaust centre. some may remember i bought a powerflow system off a member on here but it didnt fit due to the middle section hitting the gear linkage. i took along what i had and my 3inch down pipe so they could couple something together for me. left with them for the day and came back to find a nice new exhaust system.

one burley man making the exhaust.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN4440.jpg

they cut off the end from my down pipe and made a nice little joinable section onto the middle section. they didnt have any 2.5inch silencers in so they left it out and told me to see how it sounds once i get the car running. they also remade the part from the rear silencer i had to the middle.

got them to weld in another lamda bung, all to be revealed.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN4489.jpg

rubber gaiters covering the door wires and allen key bolts holding the check strap on, they still need painting.

dont know if i updated these but i painted the skirts in the matching grey of the surrounds etc. fitted the fins on...

the engine is still playing up. sometimes it runs, sometims it dont. it has started to run on with the ignition being switched off, found out my dash clocks are messed up on the traces so need a new set. at one point today i had it working as it should. stopping and starting on the key. but now it does what it does before and wont start. ill sort it soon.

thanks nick. i hope so to. its something electrical either in the car loom or engine loom. i think its the car loom as when the dash clocks were shorting and making the engine continue to run, some earth or live is dodgy. were to start!!

it is quite nice. when i paid for it the bloke said it should easily be 300plus vat as its been mandrel bent and the amount of time spent on it. but i paid £228 with vat. not too shabby!!

the tip doesnt sit straight and as the bumper wasnt on the car it dont fit right. ill just take it back to them and ask for them to cut the tip off at an angle and reweld it.

update

i finally have an update! havnt touched the car in months due to lack of inspiration and money. the car still hadnt fired up correctly and got me down quite a bit. saved up a few pennys to buy myself another ECU, which i thought was causing the problem.

asked a few regular sellers of LET parts to see what ECU's they had around. one come up trumps with one for £80. knowing they dont come this cheap normally i snapped it up, with the person being well known id have thought when you ask for something they wouldnt be stupid to send an item that people dont want, in this instance a HD ecu.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6181.jpg

most people now this is the one out of three LET ecus that is immobilised. knowing that if the chips were changed it would no longer be immobilised and seeing it had corsa written on the back i was hoping to god they had been changed.

opened it up and found this......

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6179.jpg

more fool the seller i say. :d

that night i went and tryed it on the car, to may dismay it didnt start.

next thing on my list was to change the loom, it had once upon a time had a melt down session. i had checked continuity on the wires and couldnt find a fault, but it only takes on wire for it not to start. contacted cemex off migweb about a loom, have bought parts off him before and he isnt a million miles from me.

picked up an uncut loom from him yesterday £90

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/07122011300.jpg

today i set about removing the old loom, why did i run it into the cabin through the pedal box. took me ages to get it back out. only differance with this loom is that the normal 5pin plug that connects to the mini loom isnt there. there is 2 2 pin plugs which i imagin are for the knock sensor and ICV. anyone confirm this?

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/07122011299.jpg

fitted the new one (without putting it in the correct place), messed about a bit and got it to fire up! RESULT!!!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/07122011301.jpg

put it back in the garage untill i got more time to get it all back together.

more to come.

free shipping too. i was worried that i would have to pay tax but they listed the item at $10 so i didnt have to.

i was going to settle for some other gauges on ebay but they looked a bit tacky and i really wanted these. they look well made tbf.

update

first things first i had to sort out the engine wiring, had to route it and modify it to run out the way. as this was a late type loom the ICV and knock sensor wiring was slightly different, i had the old mini loom so cut that in half to fit onto this loom. once that was all done the bay was looking good, just need to get some conduit to cover up some wires.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6494.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6493.jpg
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6495.jpg

the car still didnt have any drive from the gearbox and having the shafts to hand i set about fitting them. ive lost the big nuts that go on the end so i couldnt get it all tight.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6482.jpg

with more wiring lurking i set about fitting the gauges, to make things simpler i connected the 2 gauges together so i only had to find one wire per wire instead of 2.

i had to buy an adapter to run the oil temp sensor as it was 1/8npt fitting, bought an m14 x 1.5 't' piece.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6478.jpg

got it fitted with minimal oil loss, i havnt got the oil pressure sensor fitted, only the oil low pressure sensor. have got one about somewhere so thats added to the list.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6479.jpg

here they are all working

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN6485.jpg

got a few bits to sort this weekend which ill get round to, but its looking promising to being finished soon.....hopefully.

thanks for looking

its ran in the most awkward way!!! ive got it runnign through this capping on the firewall

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/bachilds1988/DSCN3745-1.jpg

right behind that capping is the brake pedal gubbings, it is the worst place imaginable to get it to fit (especially when you got to squeeze inside between the cage and the seat to get in the footwell) but its effective.

those gauages are similar.

ebay, type in m14 x 1.5 to 1/8 and it will bring them up. only problem is, is that the 1/8th sensor has a long protruding end (like a coolant sensor) so it cant be screwed in that far to seal. ive used ptfe tape and hope it doesnt leak. the other option is to have one that screws directly into the end but then you cant have additional items like the pressure sensor, unless you use the other oil gallery above the pressure senders standard place.

its from a corsa b, you have to cut down the main length of it all as it wont fit in the nova holes, you have then got to cut down one of the bars that rotate off the motor. its still in progress but 90% complete.

benn has done it to his and has said it doesnt clear the screen correctly due to the angle the stub bits come out the scuttle. im yet to deal with this though, they also stick out further than the nova ones also.

one thing to consider is if it will miss the battery, fortunately my battery has a cut out in a very good place to miss the rotating arms.

hope this helps, can get pics if you'd like.

Do you remember what size hole you drilled to get the loom grommet to fit properly? Having the loom come out from that point... does it reach round to all the sensors ok?

Also, how did you manage to move your radiator over to more centre? I need to do the same in order to allow for the FMIC pipe work.
