Well what does he mean ?

Iain
16-01-11, 11:55 AM
Figured he was talking about the reduced space and bars around passengers heads that is going to end quite painfully when you smash it up trying to handbrake turn it through McDonalds drive-thru. Rich feel free to correct me :)

And personally from a 'show' perspective I think it would look daft having a nice chunky bar visible through the rear quarter window with people in there too.

And on a positive note, I like the purple and bumper mods lol

LEWI007

Well i understand, the way i see it theres 2 types of cars, stripped with cages for racing.

And show cars with nice interior etc for just driving, cruising etc..

Well i first planned for mine to be a rally car but then changed to just make it into a nice car with nice seats etc.. but since in the future i want it to go very fast i think having a rollcage in the back will suit the theme, i know its not for safety but for looks.

So it looks like a mixture between a racing car and a showcar, thats what im trying to do, i was going to buy a full safety rollcage but they dont look as good as the fearless one.

They dont't look crap lol. They're the proper size for the purpose. Oversized ones are second best to me. They remind my old motor:/ (Bought OTT cage blind on eBay)

lol

A full polished cage running above your eyeline and down the A pillars would p!ss you off big time - if you drive your car. lol

What people are meaning about cage OR backseat is, whether or not it's a show cage, it's still a metal tube. When's the last time you tw@tted your head against one of those and it never hurt?

I say bin the back seats and keep the diagonal, or keep the rear seats and swap the cage for one without a diagonal. I guess you could chop it about, but no need when there's versions without available.

Rear seat passengers and a cage of any description do not go together!

lol @ never ev0rrrr selling the car either. First cars (or first on road) tend to have quite a hold over you, but it doesn't last. You may think you will keep it for ever but trust me, you won't. :thumb: lol

Today made the brake lines and fitted those, first time ive made some.

Now engine is ready to be fitted

Does it make a difference which brake caliper i hook up to the brake servo, on the left or the right, or can i just plug them in either ?

No thats what i meant, having a passenger in the back and having an accident is more likely to kill/injure the rear passenger than help at all. Leave the rear seats in my all means, just wouldnt let anyone in.

But when someone says "go on, give me a lift down the road you've got room in the back" are you going to say no?

Engine bay colour looks really smart btw

I dont care and neither do they cos i asked them, were just scum lol

Jack
17-01-11, 08:18 PM
I say keep the rear seats and the cage. As said, just don't give anyone a lift. When you find one available without a rear diagonal, buy/swap it out.

I've technically got rear seats in mine (well, cushions, as they're not fixed in place) but never give anyone lifts in the back. Mainly as the cushions aren't fixed lol But then the rear of a Nova is never a comfy place to be (unless you're laid out balls-deep in some vag - in which case its still not comfy, but more acceptable) and I always found mine would scrape like heck with too much weight back there.

Yeah but for me, my ban ends in 4 months and ive got to book lessons and sit my test/theory and get insured, and finish the nova.

I havent got a penny saved up and the nova is no where near finished.

Itll get to the point where my ban is up and im still not on the road, gotta get my head down now and make some money, stop spending/wasting money on the nova for now.

Danb1987
17-01-11, 11:40 PM
That's probably the best thing to do matey try and get at least £500 in the bank then start spending again!

Luckily I didn't have to do a retest but they hammered me with convictions so insurance is a rite tw*t..
When I get my let finished it's gonna rape me but it will be worth it lol

No point, as the Fearless ones are only ment for show, in a crash it would be worse off. Do it right a get a proper cage if you want a cage. If you want a show one keep the fearless cage.

Calipars, it doesn't matter, but the bleed nipple needs to face up.

Leave the fearless one in there, build up some funds, get a new alloy big tubing one built. One way to have both. Wont be proper tho, just show still.

Well i bought a 1.2 8V Engine that has only done 36k from Hartley, and as you all know i will keep the car 1.2 and all legally insured from now on after what happened, UNTIL i can afford to insure the V6 That i wanted to fit.

So i finished cleaning the engine up and borrowed an engine hoist from the garage down the lane and got to work.

Although ive took them out before this is the First time ive done this so happy to learn, thought it was very easy to put the engine BACK in lol

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/090820101428.jpg

Then i tightened all the mounts up properly and put my 4 branch manifold, im happy with it it looks smart, just a shame it isnt a V6 though :(

LEWI007
25-01-11, 12:10 AM
Well theres not that many wires, but today i started sorting all the wires out,

was fitting the inlet manifold tightening it up lolhttp://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/110820101436.jpg

Hooked up the throttle cable so accelerator pedal works
hooked up clutch, so clutch is back in action
and the choke is hooked up

Put the alternator on
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/110820101438.jpg

Now i think ill have to get the driveshafts in nd attempt to wire it up.

Havent got a clue which way round any of the wires go on the starter motor or alternator.

Theres 2 wires attach to the gearbox havent got a clue what they are

2 go on top of the brake servo, god knows which goes on which.

and alot more, and i couldnt find any info in the manual from what i could see, better get more homework done.

Theres 2 wires attach to the gearbox havent got a clue what they are. Reverse switch and maybe speed sensor(this isn't needed)

2 go on top of the brake servo, god knows which goes on which.
Brake fluid warning light maybe?

Good preogress mate. :thumb:

The steel stuff you have bare metaled and polished, are you lacquering it? If not it will tarnish/rust away in no time. Just saying, because the servo for example won't be fully accessible when the car is bilt back up.

LEWI007
15-02-11, 10:38 PM
Cheers, Nah liam i wont be lacquering, just keep polishing them a putting some wax on them to look after them.

Car isnt all painted yet, im waiting for the widearch kit then i need to do alot of bodywork on it before i spray, but ive been spraying some parts like the GTE spoiler, but no photos yet.

Ive been trying to get the engine running, after a long time i finally found the starter motor was the cause of the problem so i swapped that over, then there was a problem with the wires on the dizzy, so after loads of playing around i thought it was going to start this time so we decided we'd record it.

It didnt start it just keeps making alot of loud bangs, ive been told its propably the timing on the dizzy ?? not sure if that can be adjusted..

I just got stressed out today because it wouldnt start and if you listen on the video all my daft mates are looking at young girls on facebook lol

Lol epic advance/retard ignition or cam timing! Most likely ignition timing.

We had a play with a fiat UNO years ago, my mate was leaning over the car while another was starting it. The carb near on exploded. Burnt all of his hair and eyebrows. He was lucky it wasn't worse, he just had to have all the Velcro bits shaved off, leaving him bald!

LEWI007
16-02-11, 09:00 AM

So how would i get it to run ? ive checked the timing from the camshaft and crankshaft and they are both set perfect, wat else should i check ?

If the timings definatly right then it should be ignition related. I cant remember off by heart how to adjust ignition timing on a Nova, its been years since ive owned one. If the leads are correct, it should just be a case of moving the cap clockwise or anti-clockwise around the rotor arm housing. But dont qoute me on that, as ive never had to do it on a Nova. It may be slightly different, the rotor housing and cap assembly may move around the rotor itself.

Either way, it shouldnt be anything major, its just one of those annoying little things that take ages to get right. Id come give a hand if you were local, the car/project looks great!

Connor
16-02-11, 11:44 AM
Sounds to me like igntion timing, you need to borrow yourself a timing light from somebody, and connect it up to your battery and ht lead number 1 iirc (snap on one works like that),
then there will be a 13mm bolt under the dizzy which needs undoing (not all the way just enough so you can rotate the distributor) then either rotate the dizzy clockwise or ant clockwise the retard or advance the timing, the setting should be in the haynes manual. If the ignition timings correct, check your coil with the multimeter to see if its giving a good spark and that.
If thats okay, whip the dizzy cap off and see if the contact points are rust or corroded. then get the resistance in the ht leads to see if any of them are duff, then check your plugs lol Crack on :thumb:

Lmfao at f this and f that!

Time the ignition to 10 degrees before tdc on pot 1.

Then make sure leads are in the right order, and that you have a good purple spark.

LEWI007
18-02-11, 10:06 AM
Whats TDC ?

My timing according to haynes manual is set starting from the left side of the engine.

1-3-4-2

And starting from the top right of the dizzy spinning anti clockwise, thats right ?

db_1.2
18-02-11, 11:38 AM
TDC - Top dead cente.

When the piston is at the highest point of stroke

MattBrown
18-02-11, 01:36 PM
Yeah, turn the engine so both valves are shut, and piston 1 is at tdc.

Then look at the rotor, whether that is pointing, should be cylinder 1. Roughly wothin 10 degrees.

Set the timing there, it should fire up.

If not, then there's a few other tricks to try.

Well.

Had an argument with my dad over something stupid 4 weeks ago and he said i am not allowed back in the garage, so the car is sat on axle stands.

I have the money saved up now to finish it aswell, but i havent tried asking him to let me back in to finish it since 3 weeks ago.

He said i need to get some wheels to put it on so he can push it to the back of the garage and if i dont he will drop the car onto the floor and push it to the back with his 4x4.

So i really dont know what to do anymore, as if it wasnt hard work and depressing enough being banned, my dad acts like a c0ck ontop of it all and i have very very very little motivation anymore.

Was even thinking to start selling parts off it but i dont think i can bare to.

I will ask him one last time this weekend to get back in and finish it, if the answers a no i guess ill have to pass my test and buy a different car and finish this off later :(

Connor
23-03-11, 07:40 PM

Even thinking to leave it and buy a motocross bike and insure that instead.

Just have your fingers crossed for me and hopefully ill be able to make it happen.

Well my dad was being a w4nker before i got a chance to even ask him last weekend, so i have saw my mate and i think im going to be putting the nova in his garage to work on it from now on, but before i can put it there i have to get rid of 3 cars in the way, theyve sat in the corner of the garage for 3 years and are covered in inches of dust.

So the other night i got round and stayed in there till 10 working my ass off fixing them (paint a set of wheels and some panels/polish)

one i painted the wing on but it was a very bad colour so i did it again today.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0112A.jpg

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0111A.jpg

And the other was a toyota corolla but that was parked outside done.

So before i can even work on my own car i have all this to do :(

Nah Liam this is a business garage around the corner, i remember you told me you were round there before and could hear us kicking that micra all over with no exhaust on lol

The steels i thought were too narro also BUT i have tyres that are very wide fitted on them, and ill use spacers aswell. these are temporary though until i get alloys, plus i wont have to declare steelies on the insurance so nice and legal.

Ill try n ask my dad if i can go in the garage again tomorow, i hate arguing with him but hes being very arkwerd for nothing, like hes trying to teach me some sort of lesson but doing a bad job at it :/ i cant work him out.

Iain
01-04-11, 09:36 PM
You'll need huge spacers to make SR steelies fill wide arches won't you?!

LEWI007
01-04-11, 10:12 PM
Well the tyres ive got on are 195's so about tthe same width as a cav slab ?

Then if i put spacers, i dont know yet we'll see what happens, if it looks gay ill have to fnd some wider steelies.

maddogdaz666
02-04-11, 10:10 AM
why buy wide arches and then buy standard wheels? Get the steels banded an inch or 3! :)

LEWI007
02-04-11, 07:33 PM
I didnt buy the steelies i go them for free.

Its not a case of money, im going to fit a deep set of alloys later on, but im on a tight deadline at the minute to finish the car in time for when my ban ends so i can drive it and get a job to work and make more money, and fitting a set of steelies is the most sensible option because

1. i wont have to pay for insurance on them

2. they are cheap and i wont have to buy alloys, i can save the money to pay for my license/insurance.

This is not a project that sits in the garage till its perfect, i will have to drive this every day and make changes over the years.

this is a complicated project and i have to thing about many things not just the looks of the car yet.

Just read the last few pages lewi. Sounds like a crappy situation but at least you are thinking things through :) Cant wait for the car to be complete but i suppose if you did do it all in one go then you'll get bored.

Hope things get sorted and bet you cant wait to get driving again! I've had long times away from driving and it's a pain in the ass.

I'll be brutally honest, don't bother with the nova for afew years.

If your being 100% streight with the truth, you have 0 chance of insuring a modified, caged, engine converted car at 18 with no no claims and a ban.

Your about as bad as it gets lol

I have a ban, but 1yrs ncb makes a huge difference!

Well i think if i phone some up i could get it for 3, my mate hasnt got any points or anything and his insurance was the same but his dad phoned tthem up and got it for 2.5 - 3k but his dad payed for it, i have to pay for this myself.

4000 odd pound works out i pay 360 a month thats almost 100 a week.

I think i could get cheaper though, or i could buy a banger car to drive until my insurance comes down.

So many options i can take...

Food delivery? No one will insure you for that! You need business use on the policy, and if you don't, mr plod will nick you streight away, couple of local lads have been done for invalid insurance for delivering for a pizza place (not dominoes)

LEWI007

Spud - I think id rather pay to NOT drive a ford KA lol, isnt there anything very old i could get ? i was thinking about an old rover metro.

As matt said, really not worth the risk as police now are very strict on it and will do you. I used to delivery chinese when i was 17 and using a modified car was really not a good idea, especially trying to explain to a chinese boss that i cant go to certain farmhouses/etc lol

If i was you i would definetly get a cheap runabout until your insurance comes down and hopefully be able to store the nova and spend years making it perfect. Afterall building a nova is just, or if not more fun, than driving one.

With my money i have im stuck between the choice to buy a set of 17 inch Speedline Mistrals.

Or keep the money for when my bans up and get straight in for my drivers license.

One option is very tempting, the other is the more sensible approach, just means the nova will be on steelies on its first outing on the road :( after 2 years of hard work

L33 LEG
10-04-11, 09:09 AM

I should really just put steelies on it and keep my money, but im unsure, these speedlines are really calling my name,

L33 LEG
10-04-11, 09:13 AM
Iv no pictures, they're the 5 spoke ones (exactly the same as masitalys) and have no tyres but only want around £60 for them. I'd keep looking as alot of 17" wheels go cheap as people dont want them as much. How much are the speedlines?

LEWI007
10-04-11, 09:21 AM
I dont like them lol

He wants 375 posted for the Mistrals, with no tyres though so id have to get tyres.

Ive got 600 quid to my name, that should get me through my test.

But ive got to buy some more paint for the nova

Buy a gear linkage
Some rear springs
MOMO Boss
GTE Skirts
MOT
TAX
few other bits and pieces, bulbs, indicators interior pieces etc..

So blowing that on wheels isnt a sensible option, i just really want them.

Might have to try and make some more money fast.

L33 LEG
10-04-11, 09:27 AM
Id get everything else done and then shop around for some wheels, i wouldnt pay that much without tyres. Get some money saved up and get it perfect for when it's ready to be out.

Have you rotated your bumper bar L-brackets? As when I fitted the L200 lights to my first bumper, they were about an inch or two further out than yours but were right up against ther bumper bar, which I'd cut right to the edge of the L-bracket

I think its the same colour NickJ has used n his yellow SR, im not keen on it but i like it for the plastic trim, it looks good because it stands out being very simple colour next to the bright funky metalic purple  If id of did them anthracite i think it wouldof looked too far fetched.

Jack - I didnt rotate anything i just cut the ends of the bumper bar off, im not sure what you mean.

I've got a gen Irmscher twin grill and mine fits spot on.

Jack / Lewi, are your twin grills Irmscher? Or replicas?I noticed they don't have the i in the middle. Not sure if some were made without.

new rims, SPEEDLINE Mistral 16 inch

Done an insurance quote and its going to cost me around 6 grand on my dads with no mods declared to insure it so im thinking about selling the rollcage and strut braces and all my spare parts and putting a motorbike on the road instead, but i think even still thats going to cost me about 3 grand or somet, if i dont get any legit form of transport its very hard to get a job, so im really confused what to do in life at the minute alot of people suggest to me 'sell the car' but i wont.

anyway heres a photo

im also undecided on the dealersport mudflaps, i might use the old 80s Griffin ones like on a GTE

Mate sell your body before you sell this car, i mean how long you had it, worked on it?? you would never do it again...

I say get rid of loads of stuff you don't need and get a 50cc scooter/bike to use for commuting for work/jobs as you WONT ever build another one.

Scott

LEWI007
31-05-11, 05:30 PM
I know i couldnt sell it, any belongings i could sell to raise money ive already sold to put the money into the car, just about all ive got left is car parts on the car.

Im thinking to sell some unneccesary bits like the fearless braces and cage and find a low life job somewhere for a while till i raise enough money.

I recently sold a 1989 kawasaki KX125 to fund paying for the speedlines and my new provisional license, and now i might be buying it back and attempt to road register it and insure it, if i dont succeed i cant ride a ped or a slow 50cc banger i think ill just have to give up and no idea what ill do for a job.

The bike and the car before i sold it, together

scott.parker
31-05-11, 05:41 PM
You can always walk/use public transposed to commute fro work, or if you really want the car to stay you would use a 50cc, just looking at it on a must do basis..

NOV4_SPORT
31-05-11, 05:57 PM
The nova looks spot on mate, dont whatever you do sell the nova, you have spent so much time money and effort getting it to the stage it is, you will regret selling it.

If it was me, i would sell anything i dont need either parts or whatever and take whatever jobs you can for the money ( Legal Jobs ! ), get the bike back for your transport, its only for getting to your work and back at the end of the day mate.

Dont Sell That Nova !

iain

Balley

Think im going down the motorbike and job route for a year or 2 until the endorsement is gone off my license and my insurance is cheaper and ive got money saved up.

ALL my Fearless stuff is up for sale in the for sale section to fund it.

Shame to take bits off the car, but i need to get some cash and get my life together and leave the nova for a while, its for the best.

Well a very backdated update here, i recently broke my ankle just before my 20th birthday last week so im borrowing a pc to use while i sit in the house resting my leg, i was making very fast progress on the nova, inside wiring is all complete and dashboard and hifi and speakers are all in and working headlights, brake lights everything works thats as far as i got until i broke the ankle.

So heres the photos from the respray and once my ankle is better i will be able to go back into the garage and resume work and get more photos.

These were all taken by different peoples camera phones over a long period of time while i worked on it

The thread left off with me painting the front bumper splitter hurricane grey, next i painted the front bumper
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0248A.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0247A.jpg

Mock up on the car
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0254A.jpg

Then spent a full day non stop repairing and spraying a proper GTE rear bumper until late hours of the night
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0260A.jpg

Next was the old school non grab handle tailgate
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0257A.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0259A.jpg

Unfortunately there was only 1 photo taken of me spraying the car as we were all too busy having a good time but it was a terrible photo so i wont upload it

this was the car taken round to be sprayed

http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0261A.jpg

After it was sprayed and paint dried for around 3 days because of the amount of lacquer on it i built it up and flatten and polished it

Then because it was covered in G3 And dirty water etc.. i gave it its first was in 3 years !!!! making sure it was done properly with a full bottle of turtle wax soap ive been saving for that moment for 2 years
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0299A.jpg
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0298A.jpg

Then after it was dried i started waxing the full car

Then on the nighttime around 10 o clock 2 hours before midnight when my 1 year BAN FINALLY ENDS !! i washed and waxed the car again then took this photo

Id worked hard as hell to finish it for the day the ban ended, its not finished but im proud by how hard i worked and how far it came, its all purple !!

It was a happy night and that night my friends send me txt messages congulating me that im not banned anymore

we all sat round the car and talked
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/IMG0297A.jpg

Then a while later it finally came back to my dads garage and i had acquired an izuzu trooper bonnet vent, a classic 90s touch in my opinion

This is the last photo i have of it but it is now fitted to the car and a massive hole cut out of the bonnet underneath for maximum air intake for when my V6 Is in place
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/LEWI007/Nova/160120101461.jpg

Since then ive resprayed the Speedlines in a very hard to find colour and fitted new lower profile tyres

Ive done alot more also but thats till the next update, stay tuned guys.

Thanks guys

The NSF Wheel is just some random alloy wheels my mate has bought and im using them to push the car around on but they are way too wide and catch off the wings, maybe 7.5J or something lol

No way is it staying smallblock, unless it was an original mint GSi or GTE id keep it factory, but since this is just built up out of my imagination, i think a C20XE with weber carbs would be nice but about %90 of novas these days have XE's and LET's and its just boring now imo.

Plus i want the 6cylinder sound

Anyone see David Dixons old 3.2 Turbo ?

I want my engine bay like that but with intercoolers and everything all tucked away and made really clean looking so the outside looks normal also, like a VR6 Golf.

My idea is to find a 3.0 V6, get it turbo'd like Dixon's so i can have a BOV and then i can imagine the 2 cam covers polished with the plastic cover ontop took off and make some spark plug covers and paint them red so it looks like a v6 Redtop lol

But i think i wont start playing around with engines for a while yet.
