Browney ffs, that corsa had self adjusting geometry so not really fait to slate those tires that much ! although no road tire lasts long on a track.

Gareth is it ? may as well use your name lol It might be worth looking into the Kumho tires, they do some semi slicks that everyone in Germany was harping on about.

I went out in this BMW that was running them doing 7 min laps of the ring so I would say their capable IF they do a 40 profile, you may find they don't have the bulgy (sp) sidewalls that 888's suffer from so its worth investigating

26-04-09, 05:34 PM
cheers jon full of advice as usualllol :thumb:
ill ring a few suppliers and see what's available in a 40 profile i could probably get away with a 45 ill have to check and see. might go down the slicks route but havnt got a clue what size to look for

Jonlem
26-04-09, 05:39 PM
LOL @ advice, here to help and all that :)

I don't know anyone who has used the Kumhos yet so I don't know about fitment and side walls, I spoke to a Kumho agent at Goodwood last year who sent me some info but christ knows where I put that ! I guess you need to see one to know what the sidewalls are like too as that IS the main problem with 888's on novas :(

Can't give you any advice on slicks, possibly best to PM Olly Hewitt as he had a set that fitted but only 15's, I've never been able to work out the sizes on slicks and strangely anyone who I have spoken to that sells them can't either LOL

I'll text a a mate now that runs a Fiesta ST race car as iirc they run 16" slicks so he might have more of an idea than I would, I do remember him saying they weren't cheap though :(

G8WCC
26-04-09, 05:45 PM

forgot to mention i brought a 1975 mk2 escort on friday cheap as funk £400 with a cage being delivered monday evening will send you a few pics when it shows up

Jonlem
26-04-09, 05:49 PM
No problem, just awaiting his reply although I think its race day so he might not reply today.

Good move on the Mk2, is it a keeper or a seller ? what sort of thing have you got in mind for it ?

I need a job ASAP so I can get back on with mine, running the S2 costs a fortune which I'll admit doesn't help towards getting the project car done grrr

G8WCC
26-04-09, 05:54 PM
not sure on the condition havnt looked at it yet it was owned by a fella who brought it 8 years ago he used it for 2 years and it failed mot on rotton inner arches hes a welder so replaced them but never mot'd it since its been garaged since but split up with his wife a few months ago and she wants it gone ill let you know what its like . not sure wot to do with it just brought it because it was cheap for what it is

Jonlem
26-04-09, 06:05 PM
It is VERY cheap, sold my last rotten pear for a grand on ebay and that looked very rotten !

I'm swinging towards sticking with a xe for mine now, slightly undecided but generally a well setup and correctly geared NA car will paste a turbo one as I've recently experienced I don't really know what to do... not a lot without any money LOL

Just had a text, ST's run 15" wheels, he has some 16" slicks so just asked him how much they are and what sizes

The Simps
26-04-09, 06:46 PM
The Yoko A048r's have a slightly more upright and less bulgy sidewall but again only come in 195/50 16s.

In reference to the Kumho semi-slicks the sizes are here:- http://www.kumhotyre.co.uk/Motorsports/ecstav70a.html and their site:- http://www.kumhotyre.co.uk/Motorsports/KH_brochure01.html

They do a 205/45 16 which you would think is too wide but the overall width is 201 and tread width 190. Whereas the 195/50 16 888s are 203 overall width (http://www.toyo.co.uk/productdetail.php?identity=products&product_id=18)

But being 45 you might get a better side wall.

I was having a chat with the guys at Gaz ref spring rates and when running semi slicks they recommended a much higher spring rate as with the added grip and heat build up you need it. Also, in one of your pics above I noticed the back end was squatting under power which obviously wouldn't help your inner arch problem.

corsakid
27-04-09, 08:00 AM
it wasnt squatting that much just how the ride height was set up or wasnt lol ha ha, it doesnt help having the 888's on speedlines as it has caused all sorts of clearance problems! he can go any smaller with the wheels as the fronts brakes just fit under 16's so smaller profiles are on the cards!

Hi Gareth,

I've not forgot about your measurements that you're after. Glad to hear you made Combe, and don't worry about the teething issues, they're what make a good car lol

Just for reference, I ran 350lb front spring poundage, and 450lb rear spring poundage, and in my opinion that made my car handle the way it did :thumb:

doh!!!! i thought so

trackdaynova
27-04-09, 10:20 PM
Yeah for the cost of the rear springs, I paid something like £13 each from Faulkners, for 4" ones... but I wasn't on rear coilovers.

I would advise you to go for 450s yes, simply because your car is primarily a track car (one would assume?) and wouldn't be driven a great deal on the road... daily...

That said - even on the f350s and r450s, road driving wasn't that bad at all! :D

The Simps
27-04-09, 10:27 PM
I think 450s might be too much on semi-slicks.

I think Gaz actually worked out cheaper for springs than Faulkner too.

trackdaynova
27-04-09, 10:30 PM
Depends on length, and how custom you want them Si, I suppose...

I mean, Gaz wouldn't entertain the conversation when I said I wanted them 4" open length, 2.5" ID.

What you mean regarding too much on semi slicks? I ran them on 888s and my full Michelin slicks?

The Simps
27-04-09, 10:33 PM
I suppose it also comes down to how you want the car to behave aswell.

G8WCC

i was running 250 rears with the 888's on 28 psi but found it a bit light on the back

should be quieter aswell as its a track day on a monday.

Dar
27-04-09, 11:02 PM
Olly ran his springs inbound which means that the spring rate he ran would work out different at the wheels than the same rate spring on a coilover (over the wheel). The inbound spring has to cope with the extra leverage and therefore needs to be of a higher poundage.

It all really depends on how you want your car to handle and that is a very personal thing. I suggest you read up on how spring rates and tyre pressures effect your cars handling (remembering cold and hot pressures are different). Then play with it on the day to get it handling how YOU want.

I always like to see pictures of the car under hard cornering. It gives you a good idea of how much the car is leaning and if your lifting wheels etc.

It's always easier to drive a car that understeers, so it's a good idea to start off with an understeering car and dial it out to the point where your happy that your getting around the corner as fast as possible with as much confidence as possible.

A car that oversteers all the time is NOT a fast car. It may look good but it's not fast. Being able to induce a bit of oversteer at will to help you though the corner is good but takes time to get right and also get used to.

I hope this helps:thumb:

Gareth, running 28psi from cold, is very high (imo) due to after a lap or two it could easily have raised 6-10psi ish...

I always ran 14psi at the rear of my car due to having no weight in the back, but just enough to get plenty of heat into the tread to keep the rear end planted.

That said, on sprints I'd alter them slightly, due to the fact you run them from cold and you only get one shot :thumb:

Toyo had a nice tyre setup page, but it's dissapeared.
This is a good page if you want to understand toe, camber & caster settings (http://www.ozebiz.com.au/racetech/theory/align.html)

This may be intresting, but I have not read it yet (http://www.smithees-racetech.com.au/theory/summary.html)

Jonlem

I think Dar has hit the nail on the head really, you have to just try various setups and see what you feel is right, working from under steer into a nicely balanced car is a good way of doing it (good advice Dar)

I personally (and don't take it the wrong way Olly) think that rear setup was far from ideal, sideways isn't fast or lets say as fast as it could be as I can't deny it was a fast trackcar but its takes professionals a long time to know whats right and whats not, our usual conclusion with our cars setup is "yeh seems ok, lets have it" when actually a bit more thought and more importantly knowledge would help us all a lot.

Pro race drivers aren't just good drivers they also know exactly what needs changing to get the most out of a car yet it even takes them a fair while to get right and lets be honest they have slightly better backup and services than we do lol

Just out of curiousity I've emailed another guy who races those St Fiestas as I'm sure like myself you would be interested in knowing what poundage springs they run even if they are on Proflex or similar, I once read an article on a Mk3 Escort German Touring car and that ran 450 fronts and 650 rears ! Sadly there wasn't anymore info on the suspension so I couldn't clarify if it was a typo or if not what their reasons were for running such stiff springs.

Not had a price back on those slicks yet Graham but got to go up there this week anyway for some engine goodies so I'll bother him about it then if he hasn't spoken to me

the most supprising thing is there is no lag! well supprisingly little for a turbo of this size! and compareD to the van it was in previously! but is only runing 0.4 bar or 6psi so it is massively detuned from the potential 1.8-2 bar it will eventually be running!

start up and a little run up the road before the throttle cable snapped lol and thats why we costed through the vid at the end!

Not that I was running even half the power you are, but I was on standard 1.2 Nova shafts which were fine... OK, so the CV joints were the weak link in my drivetrain, and used to pop quite regulary due to how low I was running, and the amount of castor.

I'd opt for solid shafts personally :thumb: Pug 106's come standard with hollow shafts, for some odd reason...

Weight saving FTW, don't let The Count hear about them! lol

Just found the Toyo Motorsport tyre setup information

Cold inflation temps
For cars 800kg or below
4 laps or more
17 - 22 psi

Hot inflation temps (Check them as soon as you get in from a run)
<800kg 22 - 29 psi

Fine tuning (balance)
Reduce oversteer = reduce rear axle hot inflation pressure
Increase oversteer = increase rear axle hot inflation pressure
Reduce understeer = reduce front axle hot inflation pressure
Increase understeer = increase front axle hot inflation pressure

Please note that this is for fine tuning handing bias. If you want to improve overall grip levels you should be looking at your suspension setup.

What was the warm temperature ? personally I'd say the way the rear of your car slid about that they weren't optimum to everyones standards, it just suited your driving style with getting the tail out and being able to control it so well with that diff.

Humm... I'm sure some one told me that the hollow shafts were better as they twist/flex under pressure/power, where as the solids are more likely to just SNAP as they can't twist etc, but yeah i would go with the equal solids my self, although I'm running big solid conversion one's in my xe for now.

yeah think its was 141-142mph going up avon rise i was the passenger, this car is SERIOUSLY fast round a track it handles awesome as well! brakes are phenomenal, but as the sessions went on gareth got faster and faster as he got used to the car and the speed etc, it was a shame it started to rain because he was putting together some proper fast laps consecatively!

awesome day awesome car!

took the nova for mapping today went fairly well it was very hot and the fan he was using wasnt quite up to the job (in my opinion). the ambient air temp in the dyno room peaked at 1 oclock to 34.5 degreeshttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif not good for mapping at that point the charge temps hit 56 degrees ( not ideal ) . it went well untill we tried running over 1.25 bar of boost. no matter wot we did it would not boost over 1.25, we did at 1 point swap the vac pipes on the wastegate and it boosted to 2 bar and climbing over but it wasnt being controlled.
in the end we left it at 1.25 has anyone got any ideas as to what could make this happen? well happy with it, it did 125 very hard miles on the rollers and came away without a problem http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif and it goes like f**k. didnt get a power figure as the rollers dont register after 350 bhp at the fly but we hit that at 4800 rpm it revs to 7200 and climbs very fast so should be over 400 now (hopefully). tried to get it into powerstation for a power run but didnt leave mech motorsport till gone 6 so was to late, any advice on the boost problem appreciated.
