i did think about just shielding the exhaust side but its goter pass through the charge cooler after the turbo so the air will be warm at that point of the carge system anyway
thinking about water/methenol injection to help with charge temps too
that is true but its always better to start with temps as low as you can get them, rather than trying to lower them afterwards.
run the car first and see if you really need water injection, perhaps you will get the desired ignition advance and be limited by other factors besides boost. see what the IATs are like under load, and then make judgement. perhaps a water spray on the charge cooler radiator would be more beneficial? with a carefully selected turbo, you may be able to keep the compressor efficiency good enough that it is not needed.
but beware of the chaffage on the oil line from the heat shield, it will soon cut through the braid.

your impellor blades have suffered the ravages of time. i hope you use a good quality filter in future Mr G8WCC ;)

oh i do like a good project
best of luck

advice well logged:thumb:
i was thinking of using some kind of gromit around the oil feed but it would probably melt lol ill just make the hole a bit larger
good eyes noticing the turbo blades thats because i used a pipercross viper but it got sucked inside out and split draging a load of crap through the turbo (doh) got a new turbo on order
cheers

Looking awesome, when you say you trial fitted the front bumper, lights etc, does the bumper not fit because looks a big gap, or is that just not bolted up properly?

The front end looks evil, going to be mental whens its finished - but are you going to be able to shut the bonnet!?

This thread highlights the possibilities when you have the comitment to do something - and not being scared to do something different!

Just makes those project threads with people updating theirs, by relocating the numberplate screws etc a little silly!lol

why dont you think itll last very long its braced so shouldnt be to much stress on welds

Something like that would work quite well for you i would guess? Would cut down on runner length quite a lot as well.

27-01-09, 10:17 PM
that's pretty cool did jay make it
i like to do as much as possable myself so ill try myn first if i have probs or it doesnt work to well ill look into having 1 made

no ian howell made it from area six, that said fiesta is a mates luke top motor, id see how your s works mate then modify if you dont get the desired results

The steel will imho crack on the XE manifold due to the high EGT temps its going to be subjected to that it was not designed to cope with. Tube thickness on the XE one is like 1.5mm or around that iirc, decent tubular is 3mm or around that i believe.

Jonlem
28-01-09, 01:42 AM
Coming along nicely now !

I'm with Rick on the manifold though, its far from ideal and will most probably eventually fail but I respect you reasons for atleast trying it for now considering the T4 flange was possibly the most expensive bit lmao

Off topic but I read your a Powerflow fitter, any chance of making me a centre box for the Audi if I gave you some dimensions ? I need to get it trackday quiet :)

It actually turns out that his supplier uses Passion Ford as he's mentioned he makes them for Ian several times on his JWRC kitted Fiesta thread , I cant say I'm a fan of that collector but as he said, it works well enough :D

I agree, that manifold but with made by Nortech would IMHO be far superior in collector.

28-01-09, 12:10 PM
anyone got a number for nortech

Sloth
28-01-09, 12:38 PM

28-01-09, 03:29 PM
well just got off the phone to jay at nortech.
if i send him my manifold he will copy it in 312 stainless tig welded for
£800 sounds like a plan :thumb:
im goner run myn for now see how it performs then get 1 off nortech
he also said the last 1 he did spooled up better with the drag manifold than with a front mount.

28-01-09, 05:08 PM
Good news !

No reason why yours won't work for the moment, its just one of those things I wouldn't want to keep fixing !

Out of interest how is that turbo braced or did I miss that picture ?

Sloth
28-01-09, 05:10 PM
i wondered that too, and was it the right number?

G8WCC
28-01-09, 05:45 PM
yea good news should work for now (hopefully)
its got 2 braces on it 1 coming off the flange to the gearbox taking the verticle weight of the turbo and 1 about 6 inches further forward just to help support it as it comes over the gear box
it never was a perminent design just a easy way of fitting it all in without having to downsize on the turbo and power, dont get me wrong i will keep it like this untill i have problems with cracking ect but like i said i like to have a go at most stuff myself on my builds best way to learn :thumb:

and sloth the number was right cheers

With the screamer pipe on you mite not be lucky enough to get it pass the statik (sc) test they do before they let you on.

Im worryed as it will be the first time with my car but always use to be fine with the old one.

Good luck and sure you could find some thing in merlins to make it a bit quieter.

You can use the settings from the Group A manual although you can dial in a lot more castor (if you choose to)

My feelings are that you need to experiment to see what does actually work on that chassis and that it suits your driving style.

+1mm Toe out on the front although grp A manual says 2mm
negative 2 degrees camber and as much castor as your wheels allow you (before they touch the bumper)

I believe the rear is suited to 1mm toe in and 1 degree negative camber, all the beams are different though so its just worth checking how straight yours is (which will posibly be very if its a modern Astra one) if its crap simply replace it

+2mm toe out will make it lively in a straight line but good in the corners, I never had a problem and others don't with those settings, I know personally Olz found his hard work for some reason with that much toe out.

Forgot to add I got a reply of that bloke and he just does it himself, try that Ninja company as I'm sure they can do it using those settings

The feeds are fitted the wrond way round. Well at least they would be going off all the master cylinders i have used. When you pull it as it is fitted now it would add pressure to the brake master cylinder direction.

Unless your using an AP cylinder like so -

http://www.prepfab.co.uk/images/jun05/911handbrake800.jpg

The type of cylinder your using should be Feed in the Back of the cylinder, and output from the front - like so

thats right bottom goes to fuel in on the rail (after pump and filter) top 1 is return if you look on the very top of the swirl you will see 1 going back to the tank which completes the return system.

Not been on here for a while, car is certainlyu coming along a fair bit now :)

Whats the flow rate on the Facet red top ? I've only ever seen the Red Tops used on one big power turbo engine and it ran 2 of them into the swirl pot then 2 044's feeding the engine.

The Holley pumps are man enough on their own, I forget their flow rates but its a lot, I can give you a number for someone if you choose to go down that route.

Dash looks cool though, have to say we've banged our heads against a wall with Gavs trying to think about how to do it, hopefully though our planned one will look as it did on paper

Dug out the info on the pumps :

Facet is 159 litres per hour unregulated

Holley blue top is 420 litres per hour unregulated

Quite glad I looked those facts up as Speedflow are £30 cheaper than Hauser quoted me ! cheeky bastar*s lol

funny you should mention this i ordered a holley blue top from speedflow last week, after speaking to merlin who orginally sold me the facet red top they said it may cope with just one but mentioned about 2, im airing on the side of caution and bought the blue top the flow rate is massive on the thing, better to have too much to regulate it back rather than not enough and cause problems when mapping it.

my brother can use the redtop for his nova on 45's:thumb:

There isn't really a issue with being overkill on the feed to the swirl pot IMO, it will only return to the fuel tank anyway.

The only problem with setups like this is warm fuel, how much of an issue that can be is anyones guess as I've never known it to be a problem or read any factual proof of anyone having such a issue (with anything we are likely to mess with that is)

hi john i have had issues with the pumps (and deciding which ones to run ) the number for the supplier of the holley pumps would be handy mate. which pumps would you recommend to run after the swirl to the fuel rail ?

glad you like the dash got any pics of gav's

By the looks of it Speedflow do the best prices on the Holleys, a fair bit cheaper than I was quoted by a usually good supplier !

What power are you expecting from the engine ? One 044 will do 550-600 at a push, Gavs using a Aeromotive pump from the states, apparently delivers a easy 800hp and although the engine can make that we both agree we'll be picking bits of it up well before it ever makes those sort of numbers lol

£-$ is crap at the mo so I can't advise anyone in the US to get parts off but if you want a 044 just look about on ebay, I believe a mate of mine paid £130 or maybe less delivered for one from someone on there, I'll get their detaisl if you like :thumb:

Back to Gavs car though, as you may of read and already worked out the car is going a bit off schedule, the spec has wandered into something silly and due to this its never going to make a useable road car so a decision (atleast for this year) has been made to keep it stictly for drag use only, 109 octane fuel being a major change due to high c/r, were moving a lot of stuff forwards in the car and the passenger when mapping will have all of about 6" x 6" to fit their feet in due to trying to balance the car out a bit lol We have use of a runway so all mapping will be done on there which is a fair bit safer than doing it on our local test strip, dash isn't made yet, just drawn up, I've got a new job which is crap and I've had a hell of a lot on at home as has Gav so we've only got as far as ripping is car back to the shell and basically re thinking the whole project so once again its not going to be done anytime soon.

As soon as there is a good update I'll get him to put a thread up on here about it :thumb:

i should see 450 - 500 bhp when its mapped so the 044 should do the job and £130ish sounds good ill have a look on ebay as for the red top ive got another 1 so maybe ill just run 2 of them if i was to replace them for 1 what kind of flow rate should i be looking for (didnt run a swirl pot when the engine was in the van new to this lol ) cheers for the advice john.
