Nice car mate, you have a fair bit of work to do on it but it can be done

You should take the sideskirts off and check the sills behind them too :)

Mind you if the sideskirts are still in a straight line it could be that your sills are OK :)

Is that sum SRi trim i see in it?

vaughanmc

any plans for engine upgrade?
Nop going to be my first car so ill keep it a 1.2i so the insurance is lower. Engine modifications im going to do is just a full stainless steel exhaust and a induction kit.

Body modifications are remove the stupid splitters paint the bumpers up and get a SR or GTE rear spoiler.

vaughanmc
23-11-08, 04:54 PM
I'd think about an MOT once you get it running personally, so you know where your at with the car

Or have a mechanic look over it

Cle

vaughanmc
23-11-08, 05:00 PM
Aye don't do what I done lol

Got the alloys, interior, suspension etc then put it through an MOT and found out it needed a whore of amount of work

Cle
23-11-08, 05:13 PM
Throttle body is now on all it needs to get running is the distributer put on :) then i have to get a the Cat for the exhaust.

Never seen it going about up there, how did you find it? Sorry about the 101 questions!

If your needing any bits or pieces ive got a heap of stuff lieing about that you can have for nothing, GSi rear seats, doorcards, a few wings lieing about too i think.

What are your plans for this Nova?

Well the Drums just look rusted to fcuk so ill either get new ones or attemt to paint them.

the archs are solid apart from the front passenger wings but ive got a set of front wings anyway.

Looks like you're going to be busy.

Why was it partially stripped?

For £100 delivered from Inverness, sounds like someone just wanted shot of it.

vaughanmc
24-11-08, 08:00 PM
What about under it as well; back beam, chassis legs etc ?

If the drums are solid and aren't seized give them a rub down and paint

You should strip them though and make sure the cylinders etc inside are spot on

The guy had borrowed the throttle body and distributer to put on his rally car bt ive got both parts.

Don't want to Piss on your fire but i would get a screwdriver out and start poking at the rot to find out how much work your facing, take off any underseal and have a proper look about the shell.

Steve
25-11-08, 01:04 AM
Sounds like you've got the enthusiasm for it mate, no offence but you would be better off selling it and getting a better one from the start. Just looking at all the work it needs, doors wings, engine bay, then it will need all thosee bits re-painted. Fair enough if it was a gsi/gte etc but imo its not worth the bother.

Best of luck with it

Cle
25-11-08, 10:21 AM
Well i''l never get bored of it.

I no the rust is bad but i no several people that weld so ill get them to do most of it and the smaller bits i'll learn to do.

But at the moment it seem's there's no point :(

But its a nova and thats all that counts :D

Shaun_O'Donnell
25-11-08, 10:24 AM
As mentioned earlier, I think your first point of call is to search out all the rot before spending money on it.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah if the weathers good this weekend then all the bumpers and stuff are coming off to check front and rear panel. Then ill take the interior out and check all the floors and hopefully i can get it up on a ramp and check the underneath.

its defonatley got potential, id brace yourself for when the bumpers and skirts come off as theirs probabley more holes then metal lol

keep it up dude, i was 13 when i got mine, im 15 now and just under £1500 later it looks like this:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC00559.jpg

just takes time, alot of effort, a fair bit of money and alot of swearing and bruising lol, if you havent allready got one, try and get a saturday job as itll turn into a money pit.. trust me lol lol :thumb:

Nice to see the young taking on the novas...

You have had alot of advice matey, And its all good.

Adding my 10pence worth in I would take as much off as you can, almost strip it down. If you can keep it in the garage then great.

Take everything off and get it structuly sound first, then rebuild it bit by bit. This way you will learn all about novas. Great fun.

Good luck, keep us posted

Cle

Are you keeping it as it is looks wise or are you planning on doing a few bits and pieces?

Future plans on exterior are to remove the splitters, maybe new wheels, maybe a SR or GTE spoiler and thats bout it

At least its a good base to get some mechanical and welding practice in, it will be very handy to know how to do it.

You will probably need a new rear panel (behind the back bumper) because patching that will look pretty bad.

Don't suppose you would have any way of picking up a rolling shell from Aberdeen this week at all, because im away to scrap one and its got a brand new front panel and mint inner wings. Back end and sills are shot but there are some good bits

Cle
25-11-08, 10:13 PM
well like i say i think it'll need most panel's changed.

Hate to even be thinking this but the thought of scrapping it has now crossed my mind.

It dose look pretty Fooked to be honest mate but if you stick with it you will be so pleased with yourself and you'll learn loads and loads along the way, i'd get stripping it all down before you do anything though to be honest mate, get in there with a hammer and chisel and have a proper knock at any rust at all, dont be scared to wack it and make things worse as if it dose bust it all up you know that that bid was shot and it will need replacing, the only way to do it is via cutting out the old and welding in new.

should be screws on inner arch and a couple on the rear panel ??

Yes two 13mm bolts on rear panel in the boot and sides should just be slotted on

Hi mate

I admire you for attempting to rescue this one because theres a lot of work to be done. Once you strip the bumpers off and remove the interior, carpets etc your gonna find a lot more rust!!

I hate being the pessimist but i would get another car. I know your saying theres nothing up your way but lets face it your gonna have to spend lots of cash. tbh i would get another nova and wouldnt waste my time on this one. BUT i hope you prove me wrong. Good luck my man!:thumb:

cheers

Sorrys muzzy but i dont have any more money but thanks for the offer:thumb:

I no that im going to find alot more rust under the carpets and once i take the bumpers off. All thought people are saying that there be happy if i proved them wrong but i really dont think its going to happen. I have a dead line as well. My dad has said to me if its not road worthie by the time im 17 (october 09) then he is going to get it scrapped. I really dont want to see another nova getting scrap so i am going to try my hardest to get this one back to its former glory. All help is appreciated. I will be hopefully be finding out if i can get this all welded up and kept in a garage on friday. First im going to see if the guy will weld if up for me then ill ask if i can keep it in his garage.

So all body panels that you dont need (bar the wings as i have some) an need gone cheap PM me and ill see if i have money for them.

Thanks for all comments

Agreed.... On a serious note, IMO i think you should scrap the shell, take all the good bits off it (if it has any) Find another shell and go from there.

Good Novas do come about on Ebay, Autotrader and on PNG ,Just gotta keep a look out :thumb:

Cle,

i would be giving you the shell for free but i understand it might be difficult to get down here with a trailer etc. i can see if theres anything on my shell that i can cut off that you could use and i can drop it off with you next time im up the road, i wont be wanting any money for it as the car would just be going to scrap.

Keep your head up if anything it might not make it on the road but it will give you a good chance at learning some good skills for any future Nova's you get!

26-11-08, 04:01 PM
Even if the shell becomes no use as a road car, try and get it running then use it for autotesting - That way you can still have fun with it :)

Don't think about scrapping it mate, autotest the life out it!

TBH mate that is alot of work you have there, im not trying to put a downer on things but when you add up the price of panels and the time it will take to weld it all up do you think it is worth it?

I know how hard it is to find a good Nova up here but IMO that one looks too far gone to be worth saving, but if you want to go for it.

Cle
26-11-08, 10:01 PM
I no theres no way im going to make money on it but when do you ever make money on a car.

I dont mind how much its going to cost or how long it'll take because at the end of the day ill feel good that i have achieved something. For all the panels and doors i think im going to be looking at around £200-£300 for them then te welding i can get done cheap (hopefully).

muzzy
26-11-08, 10:08 PM
Im not meaning value of the car i mean personally do you think it will be worth it? You need to bear in mind also the cost of paint once new panels and doors are fitted.

Does your dad still want you to get rid if its not done in October? If so do you think it will be done in a years time?

I think it'll be worth it but logically it wont be.

Yes my dad is sticking to scraping it if i dont have it roadworthie by the time im 17. If i can get a welder and a bit a space to store parts i thing i could have this going in a years time but ill just have to wait and see what happens.

As i've already said it technically is ready for scrap but i say stick with it, if people keep scrapping rusty shells theres not going to be many good ones left around to re-shell into, once it's all stripped get yourself a spotweld drill bit and an angle grinder and either yourself or get someone to help you to start taking off the front panel and back panel and the sills, you'll then need to cut out the back arches, i wouldnt order anything until you know the full extent of whats needed.

Im only 16 so ive got until next october to get her good. Only payed £100 for it.
Ouch! For a second I thought they'd payed you 100 notes to get her off their drive!

Good luck with this little project. Reminds me of Project Snap - was pretty much in the same state of decomposition - but we got there in the end. Cost £££ though.

have you chopped out the rust under the bonnet etc and made up metal plates so a welder has less prep and will end up cheaper to get done.

100% for enthusiasm mate, there seems to be loads of pics, but not much action though! You really need to get it fully inspected/checked if you're going to get it up to mot standard (i presume it has no mot?) Don't bother wasting money on shiney bits though, if the shells not even worth it, imo.

No mot on SORN. as said before i bought the rocker cover well before i thad the car.

No mot on SORN. as said before i bought the rocker cover well before i thad the car.

Selling it is a very good idea. Probably won't make the cost of the mot though.
Inspect the car properly cheif, get those skirts off, and have a good poke around with a small screwdriver along the sills, inner sills, inner arches, front panel inner and outer, rear arches, battery tray and boot floor.
If it rotten, and you can't weld, or don't have access to a welder, than you're gonna need deep pockets, perhaps to the tune of £3-400, and thats without buying any panels, or having any spray work undertaken.
You could probably pick up a base model nova, with test for £350. Just something to consider imo.:thumb:
