    Default Removing Chrome Plating

I've got a chromed rocker cover which was plated. However the plating is extreamly poor quality and is litterally peeling off. The Condition of the cover underneath is excellent, and polishes up using autosol to a really good finish.

So, how do i remove the rest of the plating ? Can i use chemicals ? or do i have to take it to a plating company ? If i just sandblast it, will it mark/pit the aluminium underneath ?

sand blasting wil pitter the alloy, try warming them cover up to see if it makes it peel better.if not take it back and tell them to sort it!

I was going to say shotblasting, but that will cause you a headache for repolishing. If the chrome is as bad as you say, try oven cleaner on it.

Well i can't really take it back

CG, that's an idea.. i'l try it. It's pretty odd, the plating kinda feels like it's been applied with some kind of adhesive, it's slightly sticky underneath. So i don't know wether this is some kind of Cromating process, but i thought that was a chemical process. It's totally confused me.

I was told some Sulphuric Acid with a current through it would strip it
