I believe it has something to do with the bore size for each cylinder. in case of the seven's, piston size is 78.95 + 0.02 = 78.97mm

Deffo not overbore as they measured standard size.
iv heard somebody say they're "vaux recon replacement" but that must be bollocks, the last 4 bottom ends iv bought all had 7777 on them, well one was backheeled due to a problem but that was 2 c16se and 2 e16se.No way could you chance upon that many vaux replacements imo.6666 and 0000 is interesting.Iv also read the numbers can tell you where they were made,i.e. the actual serial number that's after se.
So I have found where they were made from some numbers after se.
still no closer to finding out what the 7's (or even 6 and 0 now after the above posts) refer to.
Any more info out there?
btw 0.02 is less than a rizla paper so that's not a good oversize
they were made at the Bochum Opel factory in Germany if anyone cares

0.02 isn't an oversize i know. I am trying to explain this in my best english (i am dutch).
most of the 1.6 vauxhall/opel engines have a piston size of 78.95mm, the bore size of the cylinders is always a few hundreds of a mm bigger than the piston size.
for this engines 0.02mm, so this gives you 78.97mm.
the 7's are from the 78.97 bore size
I have an engine with 6's stamped in them and the piston size is 78.94mm and a friend of me has an engine with 0's and this have a piston size of 78.98mm
Andy it's sector 7 your car is a transformer
Tonny I appreciate your input, the English is fine.I have a man i need to call back on Monday at Vauxhall heritage after ringing my local Vauxhall who were very helpful. The vaux reconditioned engines he tells me we're painted gun metal grey,so apparently nothing to do with that.
regarding the oversize you mention tonny,I'm not sure how that system works because surely you wouldn't want an engine that is already into its tolerances further than the next or one that is too tight being under????
