Default Getting a specific car reg plate

So if I was after a very specific number plate to put on a car, which as far as I can tell doesn't appear to currently be in use... is it just a case of contacting the DVLA to see if I can get it on retention?

It's a number that would have originally been from 1964, so I'm not sure if it would ever have even existed in the first place.

A friend told me pretty much all you do is request a number and they then put it up for public auction. It can start at low money.

Not sure what the original plate for the car would have been - don't think the original paperwork mentions it - but doubt it would fit the UK format anyway.

I've got a couple reg plates in mind, both are very specific to the car so there's only a few people I can imagine would would potentially be interested. Although sod's law says someone with too much money to burn would buy it and stick it on a random car

The one I'd like ideally has 69 in it so I can imagine that would start at a higher price
