Well back in 1922 that may have been true, the BBC, or the company they owned called IBA sold all of their transmitters off to a separate company back in 1997 who became National Grid PLC, they have now in turn sold it off to another private company called Arqiva, a worlwide company back in 2007 prior to the switch-over, all the channels pay into the broadcast system that they supply, so in part the bbc only pay 19% of the running costs as ppl like BT pay 29% and ITV pay 14% etc etc, or another way to put it is that just £12 of the licence fee is for the infastructure costs including running all the national BBC buildings in electric and gas

For anyone who tried to even access the petition page you would have seen an error page for the last few days, its now obvious why, 100k sigs in a few days against the rioters would crash it i suppose....

"The e-petitions site is having problems at the moment. We need to temporarily suspend the creation and signing of e-petitions to allow us to make sure everything is working properly for you

We aim to re-open the e-petitions site by Friday morning (12th August).

We're very sorry for the inconvenience this causes you.

The e-petition entitled “Convicted London rioters should loose all benefits” has now passed the threshold of 100,000 signatures and has been passed to the Backbench Business Committee to consider for debate. It will continue to be available for signature once the site is re-opened."

Im not being funny but isnt there more important things to complain about? As said before so what if 100,000 people sign up? Only means they have to look at it......like f*ck will they change anything? If you dont want to pay it dont......simple as. Its unfair but what isnt? No one cares if tv is that bigger deal £120 or whatever is a small price to pay? No different to paying bt for a line rental/ company paying it on behalf of you? Loads of more important things like giving police more power to worry about.........just imo of course

Exactly, now is when the police get a whole load of knee-jerk powers - sit back and wait til the next riots, the police go in heavy handed as per new regulations, someone gets killed/injured and the police are back on the chopping block getting hammered by the public and media for coming on too strong. Don't believe it'll happen? G20,

Problem with taking away the rioter's benefits is they then end up in a hole they can't get out of. They're rioting because of supposed poverty, yet take away what (apparently) little money they have and you end up with a worse situation. What really needs to be done is to replace benefit money with benefit vouchers that can only be spent on the essentials - living costs (by that I mean housing and utilities, not luxuries such as games consoles and pr0n), food (basic groceries, not pizza and beer), public transport vouchers, etc. Its clear they can't manage their own money to buy the things they need to get by, so Nanny Government will have to step in and manage it all for them. Think I might create a petition to that effect actually

[edit] Childcare is done by vouchers, no? So why not do other benefits in the same way... it'd stop 16 year old mummy spending her weekly child benefit on 5 packs of rizlas each time

Give them vouchers for stuff and you will be back in the 'poverty hole' you spoke of above....

Only in terms of not being able to afford life's luxuries though? The previous poverty hole I was on about was barely having enough money to eat, being out on your **** with no home etc - with benefits in vouchers then sure you can't afford that shiny new xstationbox3 but at least you have a roof over your head and food on the table
