    You sir are SOOOOO WRONG!

I've played in far too many GTi's and R32's to let you say that!
(The joys of working for VW)

Straight line speed, We know the R32 wipes the floor with the GTi so no point even conversing about that.

The 4wd system with the epic haldex rear diff makes the R32 so so much more fun in the twisties, the mid range grunt from the V6 makes them a much more driver orientated option over the GTi... Admitedly the GTi is a phenomenal car but who wants to keep an engine revving so hard?

Chuck a GTi into a corner in third carrying too much speed and your dead! Keep the speed down but keeping it in third and the turbo lag is shocking so it's not even worth bothering, The low compression 1.8/2.0 engine off boost couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding let alone put a smile on your face!

You have to enter a corner in second and can only enjoy third when your well out of the bend otherwise the front end plays silly buggers if you shift mid corner even with the DSG box, The engine will only rev so hard and if your driving it like you stole it your out of puff and red lining in 2nd before you've exited the corner..

    Compare that to the R32...

You can enter the corner in fourth carrying shed loads more speed than the GTi, Use the weight of the engine to keep the nose planted click the paddle and shift to third on the entrance to the corner revs shoot up but not stupidly high kicking the computers into "make it stick mode" so no silly twitching 4wd system takes care of the grip needed mid corner, plant it and the torque and delivery of the power makes it take off mid way round and fly round the corner not hitting the limiter in third till you're well out of the corner and have the biggest daftest grin on your face...

Anybody that rates the MK4/5 GTi over the R32 either hasn't driven one at all, Or hasn't driven one in true hot hatch style (like you stole it) or needs a crash course in how to drive a car on the limit to show what it really can do!

I'm all for opinions but how can you rate a 2.0 with a hairdryer over a 4wd 3.2 V6 with a gear ratio that is pure perfection for any type of driving and handling to die for??

I agree 100%, But i think the line should read

tbh both the GTi and R32 are dire as they are "modern" VAG cars...

Remember if there was no MK1 GTi there would be no nova SR's or GSi's or etc etc..

If the VW hadn't released the Mk1 GTi what would we have instead of the hot hatch??

Near enough everybody's list includes a "hot hatch" of some description...

June 1976 - First Golf Gti... Not the best drive but started something!

    Don't work for them anymore.

Love "some" older VW's would rather have Asa-James's 5dr 1.2 Merit over a Mk1 GTi so not entirely biased.

List is formed from experience of what i know.
