when I turn the control I can here something slipping, but if I push the cable up towards the control the heater works fine when I turn the knob from hot to cold.

sounds like the clips have snapped on your cable, same happened on mine,
Try adjusting the heater control manually by moving the lever with your hand.
(follow the cable to see which arm i am on about) you will also see if your cable clips snapped or not. If that makes any sence
Unless its a possible thermostat problem maybe

Tire adjusting the heater with the lever and it works fine that way, whereabouts are the clips you are talking about mate?
