Theres an arrow stamped on the crank sprocket, which points to a notch on the oil pump.

I think im correct in saying, that some have the timing mark on the sump, but check before the timing belt is off that the top is correct.Originally Posted by dan23
You need the bottom pulley for the alternator drive off in order to see the above marks.Originally Posted by Adam
theres a notch on the alternator pulley tho isnt there?? i never use timing marks anyway. imo the best way is to take out NO 1 plug and find true TDC. then i make my own mark on the pulley and case. then i fire it up and get it close to the marks and then fine tune with sound and feel as in my experience novas never run best set to the timing marks. they always need abit more advance
its the old style 1.4 engine doesnt have auto belt tensioner
cam cover is broken so cant use that
looked carefull at the crank spocket there is a tiny dot lined, this up with line on oil pump making sure no 1 piston was up, an rotor arm was in correct position
when cranked over you can hear the carbs sucking but it doesnt atempt to fire
got spark at plug
this is hard to explain
my mate looked at it but he has timed it up 180 degrees out
the carbs should suck when you put your hand over thembut instead air is blown out
without takeing the head off how can i wind it back 180 degree
also when the notch on oil pump is aligned it doesnt feel like its at tdc with your finger in plug no1 hole you can feel the air being pushed up but after about 6 teeth it pushes alot more air as though the piston has just reached the top
in the manual it says the notch on the crank pulley should be 10 degree btdc surely that wouldnt work also there is no timing poitner to line up the notch on the pulley
there is nothing on my that resembles that pointer
i have a 1.3 block at a mates house the pointer is on that but not the 1.4
different comments from everyone
i would help but ive got no clue, never dabbled with cam belts, scary business setting up the timing, get it wrong and the engines f00ked.
