Benn, your updates are never boring mate. I love how you took the steering rack out just because you can. To me, that would be a challenge of epic proportions but to you it's just another 5 minute job. Hero. :d

haha it was tho.
I have a rack i'm slowly rebuilding so might as well done it while there is the extra space. It wasnt a 5min job tho. Due to the car being right over to the drivers side in the garage (so i can work on the Gbox side) Getting to the track rob end was a nightmare. Had to lay over the engine, with my arm just tucked backwards in to the arch behind the wheel. I might of sworn a few times. Cheers too Niek.
Next bit of update,
One dirty box...

Hhhmm think it's been opened before.

Things learnt from today.
Holding a F28 in your arms above nipple height down the side of your nova in your single garage isn't easy!
More gearbox fun today... Well kinda.
Take ome old box, strip.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pseg3viryn.jpg
Oh that is very minging in there. Thick dirty oil..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pszgdsean3.jpg
Here is why you dont use rtv on the mating surfaces...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psxvuadt68.jpg
Cause all it does it squeese out the sides...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psrkeuizks.jpg
Do the same to the new box... Standard diff removed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps5ry0vpj1.jpg
Ooo show me what you got...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psee4zrm91.jpg
Swap the diffs over in to the nice clean box..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psvw2iipax.jpg
Time to seal the boxes back together with 0.0 glue/sealant.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psoowesdw4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psm7uqr8bv.jpg
Put the two parts of box back together bolt back up... Luckly Pete stopped the check all the gears where lining up...
oh good they dont. Que taking the box apart 4times... then end up all of us staring in to the box not understanding why there is no 3/4 gears...
After much head scraching pete noticed a odd bit of casing in the bottom.. turn the box over to look at the end plate. Hhhmm why is one bolt different?! Looks like some one has wound a bolt in the too long breaking a bit of casring away that is now stopping me getting 3/4! F**king great.
So Pete has offered to swap all the gears over in to my old box, to make one good for two... Delaying things more so.
Big thanks to Pete for stripping my boxes over and over.
Weld, drill and helicoil the casing?
Any pics of the broken part?
Casing is the issues really.. It's the bit stuck in the gears... The bolt would prob make a ok seal with something on the threads. But gotta find the broken kit, which means gears out...
Where it's broken from? Or the bit? I'll get a pic of the bit when we find it...
I was just curious to see if it was repairable or not.
As said, the bolt will make it water tight, chemical metal i'd think would repair it... I'll get you a pic.
While the gearbox is away I've tried to get a few bits done. Well after a lil holiday.. :)
I wanted to renew everything on the rack before refitting it. Finding steering arms in a good make was looking tricky. ( i like these Moog ones are they are a good make, well made, the ends are thicker than most with a more enclosed ball joint cover) Then i found one... Few months late a 2nd. Had a plan of getting them chromed... Took them to the chromed, open the boxes and find i've got two different. Looks like some greasy mech has had two boxes open and then put the wrong arm back in the wrong box... Queue the search for another.
Finally find one. Not i dont really have time to get them chromed :( as my chromer is very busy and i wanna get cracking.
They come in black, but the finish isnt great so...
Flatted back..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pshoohrmdo.jpg
This is where i find one arm has been lost... Either here or while at work.. GGrr so start searching again. No one has anything.
Painted the arm i did have. Much better finish.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psifhe8l5u.jpg
In the mean time i stripped a arm from my old rack.. Sanded and painted that too.
But i wasn't happy with fitting all new and one old arm... OCD/just wanted all new. Luckly the one i've ordered about 6 times has finally come in! Yay!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psayudfhl8.jpg
Got them home, sanded and painted...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psqktqvfsc.jpg
Rod ends where the same, in a lose light coat of paint.. Couldn't have that.
Sanded back..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psvnask5ym.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psu9iu8ixo.jpg
Painted. Look better i think.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7msrt6x0.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psxd2pcsqn.jpg
So now i can build my rack up and get that fitted all in.
Also got the chassis leg and bit of bulk head (i wasn't happy with the finish there so..) Painted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps59lfzpy3.jpg
Bit of good news is my F28 isnt as damaged as we thought. Bit of it was dry and not lining up. So My differ is now going in to better geared box. Which i could be collecting over the weekend and dropping to be painted next week.
Nice work mate
I've always enjoyed your build thread Benn, I like all the unique personal touches you've made....
Benn, you even sprayed the rod ends... You make me want to do my Michalak all over again :thumb:
Yea, the finish wasnt great and time have time to chrome them.. I know only a bit of them is seen, but want right..
One thing i was never happy about with my seats, is the fact that who ever re trimmed them had cut holes on the insides of them for the pulls (to flip the seat forward)
Which these seats dont have... I've tried a few things but never been happy with them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8z3tasmf.jpg
So this time, i got one of these...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pszej3dc3b.jpg
Cut a bit of plastic and did this...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pss1wwhcbk.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps1rizjfyk.jpg
Then weld it in..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pskpzdsz2k.jpg
Sand it off..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psshtshsvc.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psaecpc50y.jpg
Gave them a very quick skim of stoppper then sanded that off then popped to see a man that does Flocking...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psqxtg14ur.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psshguhg8y.jpg
Colour looks a little diff, but it's just the flash...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pskiwtijnq.jpg
Gaps filled and look better.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psv86dmxun.jpg
Will get better pics when the cars out of the garage.
Cracking idea you had there Ben !
Cheers Kev, good thing is cause the way the seats are made. The have the holes both sides, so the trim still clips in proper.
Nice little touch benn. :thumb:
Thanks Bruce.
A while back i stripped a spare rack i had, i've polished my rack before but it dulls very quick as it's very hard to clean. So this time i had it chromed.
With it all apart i wanted to get all new bits, new rack arms and ball joints and bearing. Plus new boots.
Today was finally time to rebuild it, but sadly with no new bearing.
This is the shaft the bearing sits on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psh3miygep.jpg
I took it the bearing would press over over the gear bits. But no.
As you can see here there is a big lip that side, i found this after breaking the bearing with the press then cutting the last bit of race off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pspimro8j1.jpg
So it must press off from the other side, That bit must press off.. If it does i couldn't get it to move. Ended up just damaging it. Alot. So i've had to leave the bearing on and just re-grease it. :( (was no play in it so should be ok)
Dirty job, but my own fault as i used to much grease.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psv0yfrk0e.jpg
Built up. The chroming isnt perfect due to all the shapes to get blow from. but it will do.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psntk9utde.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psekg6uxyl.jpg
Use these nice polished stainless jubliee clips on the bigger side of the boots.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pswa4ekd1o.jpg
Didn't have the same for the small one tho :( so used polished GM ones.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pszikqecgy.jpg
Boot wise i wanted the hard style plastic ones. Which i couldn't find anywhere, only the soft floppy rubber ones.. Don't like them.
So i set out to use the ones from the rack before...
Before.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pspaaxatzm.jpg
After.... A trip through the dishwasher.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psp56w3omt.jpg
And a wipe over with some cleaner.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps89gxbmsi.jpg
Then i gell'ed them up.. haha
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6ro3gtdz.jpg
All ready to fit at the weekend.
Can't wait to see this in the flesh , oh yeah with you cleaning every nut and bolt lol
jokes aside I might have some small s/s clips you can have
You will, will be at all the shows plus you're what half an hour away from me..lol
Benn, I totally understand your ocd fuelled attention to detail. Love it. lol
Good, glad you do.
Box in ??
It was being painted when i left work on sat. So i should be bring it home tomoz. But due to the weight i will need help fitting it, so will be a weekend job.
I will always lend a hand if needed pal.
Cheers dude.
Was struggling like funk yesterday to get my rack to line up with the steering colum. Getting in and out of the car then back under the front of the car in my single garage isnt easy and was a real pain in the ****. Luckley my mate tuned up and i got him in the car jammed down in the footwell while i laid under the front/side of the car moving the rack around to line it all up...
So 1 re built chromed rack fitted.
Gearbox turned out great benn
Your build is inspiring dude :thumb:
Fitted yet?
Looks good
Will look good with a few add ons.. ;)
Thank you very much, that really nice to hear.
Fitting monday, need a hand to to weigh and space and the mrs is at work and im not...
Aaron the painter has done a great job, got in all the small bits and put an extra coats of lacquer on for a deeper shine.
you keep telling me to crack on !!! now get that bloody box in!!!!
Sadly busy weekend with shi*e. Tomoz is cracking on day.
Well if you fancy a hand you know we're I am lol
Will do, cheers.
So as promised after my request for roof change info, I've read through this whole thread.
Words cannot describe how inadequate I feel reading through it, the standards I have accepted in my own project now seem woefully low and I definitely need to step up my game!!
Unreal attention to detail mate, it can only be applauded and something for the rest of us mere mortals to aim towards!!!
Now, some info and opinion if you don't mind, this goes for anyone else reading with an F28 in a Nova.
Having fitted the F28 what is your honest opinion on it? I'm tempted to look at fitting one but your troubles eating CV joints scares me, is this rectified now?
As you know, I'm running a 20XE with Throttle bodies mapped at 187hp and 149 ft/lb of torque.
What engine and specification do you run House1983? My help Benn with his response.
