Fantastic job, a really usefull mod.
Great work as normal Benn
Love how your always looking to improve
Cracked on with the need repairs. Gutted as i didnt realise how bad it was in the corner behind the headlight.. Must of been bad and the covered over, which as just made it so much worse. So my rule is if it rustey remove as my can you can and replace.
Worst bit, looks like it was patched and filled, but water has got in badly.

Cut off, area all cleaned up, bit of CAD to geg the shape and fit right.

Good penertration,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps40f732a6.jpg
In, just needs some shaping. You can see the bit behind had to be cut out and replaced. Think i must be low on gas too...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psea53ba0d.jpg
Ground back, shapdd a bit more.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf8ece45d.jpg
Bit of filler to get the join Right and smooth.
I also started to cut another bit of tube (metal bit) so give me abit more angle so the filter points forward a bit more.
Nice job , I do like this thread
Good job benn.
Its great to see the cars forever evolving.
Looks amazing mate. You're taking smooth bays to a whole new level here. :thumb:
I've finally more or less read most of this thread and it's been epic. Will it be at any shows mate?
Cheers dude, im not really in the grand sceme of things.. But im doing quite well....
Lol you should read my mig one, lot more in it and a few extra years... Thank you very much, ill be at Castle Combe, PVS, VBOA @Billing, Retro rides
Now on the drivers side behind the mount, theres a kinda dip. With my air pipe on your couldn't see it, but it was untidy and would pool up with water. We all know that isn't good... So i wanted to fix that as there will be no air pipe over the top...
Out with the CAD.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6cc71f7f.jpg
Lots of trimming and messing about later...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps4a421b27.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps9bf64028.jpg
Now before someone says it, yes there is a small gap right by the mount. But this will be fixed when the engine is out as i need space to get in there more.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps234b697b.jpg
Under this plate, i've also tagged the back on the mont to the chassis leg. Just for added strength.
Then i use this, i use it on the under side of my metal work, then over the top too. Helps with rust/bare metal and that.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps4f6dfd48.jpg
Next on to my hole... hehe
I've welded the seam above and below, for added strength.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psb64f333e.jpg
Tube to be welded in, was a lil small, so had to add a bit of width.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pscbe166fb.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps83e6ea5b.jpg
While welding in...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd4df385f.jpg
Got a bit more angle on the pipe too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd00b9d89.jpg
I've tidied the front panel up too.
Great work bud, looking forward to seeing the finished article!
lol Me too.
I've picked up some flexi tube so my wing vent finally does something, then will feed the box the filter will be housed in. Then the extra air from the front will be good. Well i hope.
Cheers Si.
I'd feel bad chopping up nice paint, but I know it doesn't phase you! New changes are going to make it even better, have I missed how you are waterproofing the AFM if it needs it?
Needs a must...lol afm and filter will be boxed in to be kept dry, with two air feeds.
I got a lot of time for metal work. Benn might I recommend Vactan for steel ;)
Great work Benn, a lot off effort and dedication goes into this car!
Good progress Benn, more neat touches ;)
Didn't the early courtney turbo conversion stick the afm under there somewhere and they wrapped the afm in a inner tube??
It will be interesting to see how the afm turns out. Good work so far.
Me too, using this to get my welding skills better too, so two jobs in one. Im still using my old door skins at the mo...
Thank you :)
Cheers, im still trying to get it right lol
Ive seen Kinda far away shots of them but no in depth pics, is it Jon that ones the vhb sport did try and ring me to talk but we never managed too so i dont know how they did it...
Good i hope. And thank you.
Yea, think it would of run the same way... Just i dont want the filter on show...
Small update.
Been in the garage.. Grind, weld, grind, fill, sand... Repete. :( Sick of it.
Started by welding the other side of the leg tube, then filling the small cut away at the top. (and the small hole) My welding isn't the tidiest tho)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pse672bdbf.jpg
The started to lay down a coat of black fiberglass.
I wanted the mount fully smoothed in as it will be much more on show.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7f620371.jpg
Didn't like the loom going thru here, as it was on show. So it got welded over and smoothed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps096e3822.jpg
Sand all that down, then use a finer nicer filler/stopper.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pse1bb7909.jpg
As you can see i made a few repairs and maybe smoothed a few bits off again..lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pse2668ab1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps47621797.jpg
Main bit behind the mount.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd8e9bb0b.jpg
Next up is primer and then paint, soon hopefully.
Benn you need gas for your welder that weld has no strength
When the bay stay stay ready he looks sweet.
No? I was getting alot of brown dust when welding, i think my reg is a bit dodgy. As some times its ok and i get a much better weld.
It all holds strong, think it's work going over the top? Or a flat plate over the top for extra strength?
Cheers dude.
Keep at it dude, gonna look mint!
Getting there now Ben, there's more grinding than Milly Cirus in here at the minute lol
It will definitely worth it though ;)
Looking good mate, if your not using gas for welding then honestly get your self some, it is amazing the difference it makes.
Are you going ahead with the servo/master cylinder move?
looking good mate love all the smoothing ;)
Very impressive work mate, especially considering you have to work with a sore wrist. Thumbs up and all that. :thumb:
Cheers Si.
lol there has been alot. Hope it's worth it. Had enough atthe mo.
I am using gas, i think i've just run out/wasn't turned up enough. At the mo no, no time to do the servo swap..
Cheers.
Marks sanding a nightmare. Having to wrap it up ad crack on...
I always wondering how precise you are!
The small modifications are mostly going to a big and perfect rebuild.
Nice job!
I try to be very, but doesnt always work. Thank you too.
Not been enjoying this. To short on time, to much to do.
So This happened.

Thanks for your help Dan
One main reason for this was my leaking sump. It leaks alot.
Got a spare sump, checked it and had it machine flater. As i dont wanna have to do this again, it was then dropped off for chroming.
They had a few probs when chroming it sadly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd4393a97.jpg
Like not taking the lettering off as i'd asked.. :(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps21ab5096.jpg
Other was corrosion in the fins.
Here..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd7e7de77.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psc3b8f23a.jpg
Needed to be sorted as it would look utter ****e.
Mask to the edge of the fins and lightly sand.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps208fe1f9.jpg
First coat of Arden blue, then using a finger and a cloth wipe the top of the fin to show the chrome off again...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps25b1efec.jpg
2nd coat and so on..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psdc9280c4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pse24bea36.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfe1829a8.jpg
Lacquer and let dry then un mask... Leaving me with a tidier job.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps3e1d403d.jpg
With the engine out it was time to get the old sump off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0363f207.jpg
Nowhere really looked like it was leaking tbh.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd3319661.jpg
Looks ok in there..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps70ca250c.jpg
Gave everything a clean.... Remember to clean the bolt holes...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf13c7da4.jpg
That's a lump of hard RTV. Must of been 3mm long.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps14d5403d.jpg
Refit new chromed sump.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps9be5326f.jpg
Nut and bolted on the pump end, as i'm using a Zlet pump and they have M8 holes. Last time i tryed drilling the holes in the gasket and sump to be M8, this didn't work on the gasket and could of made a leak from there...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psda79a037.jpg
Finished.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps00a916b5.jpg
And i re painted my starter too. Just cause it looked a bit tatty.
Car goes in for paint tomoz. Rebuild at the weekend for PVS.
Awesome Benn! One of the cars i always love to look around at PVS, love the hard work and small details. Its a credit to you ;)
Love the work ethic Benn - Good luck with the deadline!
