Just make an 'air feed' from around the exhaust manifold area up to the filter.
The origional airbox had a similar set up.

put the proper air box on and use a k and n element instead?

my old sr used to suffer from the carb freezing, all i did was fit the standard air box for the winter untill i got a set of twin carbs

Best plan is to fit a std airbox and filter, as others have suggested, also maybe she's running lean, I used to suffer from the same problem, but only after @ 40 minutes constant running on my 1.3SR
