Hi dan, hope that bit of graphic is ok and has stayed stuck lol. Seriously though, it's win as car of the day was fully deserved. Your enthusiasm, keen eye, and willingness to do what you think is right has made this a supeb car imo. Can't wait to see it blasting round a track!

Thanks guys, its nice to know a vision i had in my head at the start of the winter has been accepted so well :D

Yeh john the sticker is fine now, alas i wont be at PV which is a bummer due to a wedding on the saturday but will be at billing with it going by the feedback and general comments on the car :thumb:

Ok chaps the first drive/outing is now over and done with, the car was awesome and stood upto almost everything it had thrown at it, i have a few more details in the club section with some pics, here's a couple just to update the thread :thumb:

Looks stunning!! Graphics look great coming down the rear arch.

How did you find XE power compared to your old small cock?

Steve
26-06-09, 05:43 PM
I'm guessing it all about the power delivery, iirc his small block was 140 ish bhp so not that far off a std redtop.

Benn

Looks so planted dude. Sticking like glue.

Dan
26-06-09, 09:16 PM
The only comparison i can make to my old car would be the balance and feel of the car. When taken into consideration i havent driven anything sporty nova wise for 18mths plus it was just "ok" speed wise, not ballistic down the straights but the c20xe mated to the quaife sccr box and a 3.9 f/d made it nippy enough for some fun. (mind you i am hard to please with speed, first lap was fun finding what the ratio's were like, but then by the second lap it was as fast as it was and that was it, needed to find more speed in the bends to have fun)

Its key area was the corners, more than enough grip with the tyre wheel choice and the plate diff, with a few tweaks and possibly some new tie bars/arb etc i should make the front end more planted to maximise its potential. It drove fine and was balanced fantastically just like my old grey car, which was good as i thought/hoped i had dialled out most of the big block weight and equaled it to my old build.

love it mate , as said loads of times , another car the will prove that big blocks can handle lol :thumb:

OKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

So here we go again, breif recap, built car finally did trackday and chassis needed more from engine as standard xe was pants.

Yup i managed to source an SBD 208 tb setup for not alot with some new leads chucked in and a set of cleaned and tested injectors (saves me the hassle :) )

That should up my spirit when on track and enable to maybe find some of the current hidden limits of the chassis :d

oooooh pritty bits! I'd love some TB's but couldn't justify the money :( Hence some bike carbs!

14-05-10, 09:15 PM
Now these must of been dam cheep then! as last time we spoke i said TB it and you were like, umm maybe, but i dont want to spend... oh look (as Dans on the Internet looking for 2nd hand TB's while im on the line) lol

Glad to see you did the right thing, it will now do what you build it for!

Wouldn't mind letting you loss in mine to see how far it's capable of being pushed..

Dan
14-05-10, 09:23 PM

Right then, the boat is now out at sea, so i can finally get the nova back out. It has been sat since billing last year collecting dust so i dragged the old girl out and gave her a wash, then proceeded to put it back where it belongs ready for the tb's to be fitted along with some other bits i have had stored away since last year.

Here's just a few gay pics of a shiney car and a shiney car ready to be worked on lol

Next weekend? :)

Possibly yes, i'll see if i can get a few bits modded first as that will dictate the work load

And thanks for the comments guys, I am going to try and use it abit more this year if i am lucky, as last year it just got dragged to 2 shows and 1 trackday. Would be nice to get it out on the public scene abit more as the shows/trackdays are the only chances it gets due to being a trailor queen/toy

GL with fitting the bodies & GZ with the build overall.

You might find yourself running a narrower rear tyre in the future with the LSD.

Can I ask whom did the [vinyl I presume] graphics printout for you?

Ernie
24-05-10, 07:55 PM
looking god Dan.
If it's any help i think me and Dar fitted arp rod bolts not long before you picked up the engine mate.

Dan
24-05-10, 08:02 PM
lol lol lol @ rick, i dare say your on the fatter side than me now :p

will do lee, i take it i'm not allowed to use silicone on this one lol lol lol

The graphics were done by a chap local to me, i had a favour or two owed so he did a job lot of the nova and landy all in for 300 quid. Which was great but now the favours are equal so hopefully i dont need any more vinyl lol

I am very interested on your insight to the rear tyres though. My only umm and arrr at the moment is the wet tyres situation. I'm going for cut slicks obv but it will be interesting to see how they pan out as the current tyres sizes are 225/45. On track the car handled fantastic, whatever Chris T had the diff set to works great on track. The heat in all four tyres was very creditable proving they were all working well. I pushed the car very hard through the bends and it seemed very capable (had to, to have some fun). I am still pondering an antiroll bar of some sort to help flatten the front a touch but it doesnt need to be excessive, a similar result can be had in other ways depending on how lazy i am lol.

Main thing is to get the bits on the engine to let it drive like it was built to and not choking it anymore :thumb:

Yes you did ernie, which is partially why i didnt mind buying the tb's for this lump :d

not much of an update as such, just thought i would record the fact that i have spoken to compomotive regarding a second set of wheels just for wet weather tyres. Obviously the current ones i have are rarer than rare, but they offered to make me a set of MO's in silver, which if fine as they are only to serve a purpose

They are pouring them into the moulds this week and i have been promised delivery before my trackday at the end of the month, although it may be tight and i might have to get the wets fitted the day before :thumb: (sure it wont come to that)

Just a thought, but if you want/need them ricky tick, I live minutes from Compomotive, collect & give to Lee at PV for you if its any help?

Dan
31-05-10, 12:22 PM
that would be cool, apart from the fact they are being made full stop, if they were blanks off of a shelf then the time frame would be less. I dont know the time scale to pour a set from fresh but the window was 3weeks delivered which i presume allows for other orders being done/fitting mine in and a grace period to allow for cock ups ??

Dan
31-05-10, 01:57 PM
lol lol posh, i wish

Just sods law they have no blanks on the shelf, which is a pain tbh as i hate waiting to long with a deadline looming. I suppose thats part and parcel of having such an awkward spec wheel lol

Dan
31-05-10, 02:12 PM
225/45/15 or 220/580/15. A dunlop full wet cut slick rolls in at 125 notes new which is on my list at the moment as obviously i have a large surface area for such a light car in wet conditions. unsure on the 888's work rate in comparison.

And me, awkward, never lol lol

Benn
31-05-10, 02:22 PM
220/580/15.

That's huge!

Dan
31-05-10, 02:27 PM
yeh exactly the same as 225/45/15 lol lol lol The dunlop cr311 comes with either stamped on it as one is competition only and the other has an E marking (same tyre with different sidewall stamp lol )

Benn
31-05-10, 02:33 PM
I ment that you say 580..lol

Glad your still cracking on with it.

another small update..

in prep for Dar to come and set up my tb's i have ordered the last few bits i wanted and had the manifold machined for the brake servo pipe. Once arrived i stripped off all the old crap and made the tb's up and sat them on the engine.

Another that come to pass is choice of strut brace, as i have no time to faff about i may either remove my current one and refit when filter is on or i have tidied up my old one to use. Both options are not ideal but will get be fine to get the trackday out of the way

12-06-10, 09:18 AM
Nice one dude, you may as well have put the back plate in for the filter though, fiddly job on the car by your self.. don't drop any bolts for the trumpets lol

And if the second brace is like the sparco one me and Dar have it will work fine with the filter on.

The second brace will work fine, but having said that, once the filter is on the red one will be fine anyway as i'm not one to be ripping the filter off every 2 seconds lol see how i feel :)

The backplate has been left off on Dar's say so, as he will be fine setting them for me, once that is done it will go on (prob get him to do it as he has the hands of a ten yr old lol lol )

Dan
13-06-10, 09:53 PM
It will be graeme, i have a load of stuff to sort through and sell if its any good, and will deliver at billing as i can chuck any bits in the landy pandy tow vehicle, if the time scale is no issue then dibs on that are yours once i am sorted

looks excellent mate, will they be running for the 28th

Dan
15-06-10, 08:29 PM
got to be as its paid for lol, its all bolted on properly now. So need Dar to pay me a visit and set the tb's up. and lee is paying me a visit one night so we can fire the loom on, slap in my group a hubs and sort the brake master cylinder as i screwed the original one lol.

My new wheels should be made by now and will be with me for next week, the chosen wet tyres are the new toyo r1r's that have had great press from other places, been available here the last couple of months. they are also in the 225/45/15 flavour. I think they are also becoming quite common within the time attack circles by all accounts due to the dry/wet weather windows of usage

The tyres are sat waiting for me at my normal motorsport tyre depot and look like this....

Yes its true, Dave at mech motorsport was a star, we had issues with the sbd base maps and basically the car didnt run at all, 5 days before my trackday :tard:, that man got the car in and a quick map put on it which was absolutley fantastic given the time frame. top bloke and very good. defo use him again and fully recommend him :thumb:

just for the sake of it this post is purely to add the footage from combe to the thread to keep it all in line and together

yeah a mates kadette did the same after i had gave one spare i had lying about! mine needed a bit of persuation with the ol' nylon mallet but guess they're all different unless the engine heat softens up the o ring?

cool, i'm the same but as above, fell out a mates engine. i don't know if you covered it earlier but if you've converted to coil pack and still run dizzy cams you'll need to blank the end of the camshaft. you've probably got this covered though mate but just incase as oil with seep out the blank and down the block, it'll also build up behind the blank plate.

forgot to say in the first post, car is awesome! looks great and aggressive and also goes very well especially round those fast bends in the video, top work! :thumb:

Though I agree on TH's for looks, I can't wait to see it on MO's. Should look hardcore.

One set each side for Billing??

Dan
06-07-10, 10:49 PM
doh! thats the same gay thing stu said lol lol lol

Tbh because the th's as said 'look' right, the mo's look more like 13's in comparison and look lost in the arches. Obv they aren't as 15" is exactly that, but the visual impact is massive.

Or maybe is just a fact i've never really been to bothered with mo's and now i have a set of my own i'm still the same lol

I Agree, or as said two sided car! lol

And there was you saying NO chance every time i said you'll have to find some more wheels for wet tyres, what happened to that then???

Ah the same as going for TB's lol lol

Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens at the weekend.

i didnt pay for the wheels, they were a gift/bonus ;) lol lol

As regards the mo's they are staying at home, every dog and his dick fits "mo's" as soon as they build a remotely motorsport orientated nova. Seen more than a few last year at billing. However, how many nova's were wearing th's and more to the point ones where the inner area was recessed and not raised ;).

I rest my case your honour lol

Bullocks!

How many MO's do you see that wide?? Plus its an ideal oppertunity to get a load of pics of the car with different wheels on it, instead of just having a load more pics of the car looking the same as it did last year!

lol lol they dont look wide from the side though, just like 13's, just like all the other cars wearing them on the day. erm i have seen many many many sets of mo's that wide in my time, so for me personally its no biggy lol lol

I know people will be sceptical of my view, but then i also said the cars colour was a muddy grey and some might like it, then i said the stickers should work and not spoil it, just about got away with that aswell lol. so you will have to trust me yet again :tard: lol lol

ok so i was having a browse through random pics on my desktop and found a couple from the trackday i did, alas they arent very good for me, as described back in the thread my suspension isnt as hoped (350lb front 250lb rear).

But......on a plus note visual evidence is always good to make an assumption from for the new (already chosen) direction

love this car, massively impressed when i got to have a good nosey at it at billing, looks like it cocking it leg in the 2nd picture lol

it does look a bit floppy lol in the pictures and could do with stiffer spring but then i know feck all about what works and what doesn't when it comes to suspension(or anything else) lol

Dan
06-08-10, 09:44 PM
An example of spring poundage, the standard coilover springs that are supplied when you buy a set are approx 225lb front and 175lb rear, so to go to 350/250 should be fairly big jump on something that is already firm, esp in a lighter weight car like mine, or not as the pictures prove.

But obviously and i presume i am correct in saying, that the cornering forces i can carry running the 225 inter tyres and general setup means that what should be more than fine in general, is actually nowhere near what i need for my particular build as we have already stepped certain area's up above the norm.

Lee

To be honest I can see that thing needing stiffer rears than that. I rekon we'll eventually end up bunging 400's on it in the future

are you running ARB's?

Thats a last resort, it is in the back of my mind, but the whole arb thing is just a sugar coated pile of pap designed by vauxhall on a bad day. Myself and stu have a few idea's but its an area that can be sorted easily by going other routes we believe and with no major costs.

Stuart

Arbs might have a place, but NOT the oem setup.... and not until weve had a play with other routes that do work very very well

nope none at the moment, the 18ft wooden racing/sailing boat I restored last year is sat back in the main part of the barn at work. I have to give it a once over for the new race season comprising of respray and a few tweeks and additions to make it abit faster. So that has priority and the nova is tucked away awaiting freshening up for the new season still :( .

The perks of it solely being a toy i suppose :)

Ok so here we are, a chance to get back to the car and actually put a spanner to it for the first time in almost 4 years.....

I was quite pleased to be honest, I haven't been near a spanner or a nova in all that time. From driving the car out of the barn/ driving it in the right way round to having the engine on an engine stand and the car rolling again took me 2 hours, working on my own and taking care not to damage anything. Now its just a case of sorting the sump gasket once and for all, changing the tappets and getting the gearbox refreshed. Biggest hurdle is going to be finding someone to do the box as I probably need the synchros doing, the diff serviced and the 5th gear changed to a better one

Here we go again

lol lol lol alas mine wont be as impressive, these guys have done everything properly, most of my build is using parts I have been running on my cars for the last 16 years and just moved from car to car as they have all been budget builds. (this one included which is why the work was done by myself and other members who have helped along the way)

I now have a list of parts I need to sort the car but I still have some unsures...

oil pump change, to be or not to be bothered
ARB on front, again an issue myself and Stu need to assess based on the cars first 2 outings (and then find one if I need one lol)

I know one thing, this month is going to be expensive, just bought a new fridge freezer due to the other failing, as mentioned elsewhere the oil burner is in for a 290bhp/460lbft tune up (read as something else needs sorting so the tune up removes that and its cost, and future proofs it against other potential costs so hand is forced slightly) and the nova work starting next Tuesday, if we achieve an mot then at least the nova can be used in one sense and the track days may have to wait until spring :wtf:.......

06-09-16, 06:12 PM
Well todays update is we now have a brake pedal with my 22mm master cylinder finally put to the test. Never had anything special before as the pedal was crap so thats a win. Front wheel bearings are ordered for tomorrow, engine run up nicely with the old skanky plugs. New ones are also on order as me and stu found noone stocks what i wanted anymore :wtf:. But atleast that drive around with me in the passenger seat let stu know what a real diesel felt like (although to be fair he was tame with the beemer )

Stu also sorted out my beautiful wiring to his own standards..... never heard a man swear so much lol lol lol.

Obviously the bonus was shopping for food which was probably equal to what we supplied at billing lol . Needless to say turkey burger burgers are on the menu tonight.

Tomorrows challenge is order the correct temp sender for my new clocks set up (read as 3 years old but never done properly) and calibrate the fuel sender etc. Might even mount the speedo setup and calibrate that in also.

Our gut feeling is this will still be an example of a budget basher by todays standards and show that cost and speed is only relative once everything is 100% and has been exhausted.

House

I've got an ARB should you require it?!?

What wheel bearings did you decide on in the end?!?

Dan
06-09-16, 07:07 PM
Cheers House. We have a 22mm arb here that i have hoarded for many years. Bearings wise for now standard just to get it rolling. May look into upgrading in the future. My only question would be why do the bearings need doing??? A bigger bearing will do the same job at the end of the day and its not like its a full time rally car built to the old grp a bible doing silly stages and getting beaten to death. Its just a car for smooth tarmac......

No drama on the ARB mate it's sat outside looking sad at the minute!!

The issue isn't the bearing itself, the issue is the machined hubs, the sustained stresses put through them when cornering hard are too big, a road car would be ok but a track car really needs uprated bearings allowing for the use of non-machined hubs, mine hub snapped on track at Mallory, rather lucky not to end up upside down!!!

Dan

We run standard hubs and uprated shafts with cav outer cv's so we dont suffer machining issues

Love the clock. Motorbike?

What have you joined the front lines? Wont you just have to separate them 12inches away?

Dan
08-09-16, 01:50 PM
Clock set is a bike/kitcar setup. Same size as my old blackberry phone but with everything needed a stock dash would have. The fuel and temp is all working and once we have the front end complete its just a simple case of setting up and calibrating the speedo and setting the shift light.

Still not overly fussed on the mo's to be honest. But i bought them so just aswell use them and keep the th's for dry trackdays

I think tomorrow fingers crossed she will be finished with just some no. plates and an mot next week if i can be arsed. Oh and a rear no. plate light we keep forgetting about

Got a link to that dash/clock, exactly what i want to run in mine but rev counters have been like 10-12k rpm and i didnt like the thought of wasted rotation.

I assume the car is on stock track width just with the wider/different offset wheels?

I have a wide track kit for mine, but i have found a set of TH's with a low offset in 8j so torn on what to do now.

Stuart
08-09-16, 02:41 PM
Ace well dash.

You will need their temp sender as the gm one doesnt work.
For ref, we have the fuel sender setup at 320 low and 20or 30 full

Dan
08-09-16, 03:31 PM
As i have said to many others regarding track on my nova.... if i did it again i would probably just wide track it.i was in a position where i could do what i wanted so went the tyre width route but the wide track has the potential for more adjustability and you have more options for various wheel and tyre combo's for slicks wets and road tyres at the fraction of the cost compared to doing that with the wide wheel route.

Dan
10-09-16, 09:30 AM
well we finally got the car 90% sorted and ready for a potential MOT next week. Firstly I would like to say a MASSIVE thanks to Stuart for spending the last week helping me get it back up and running and being my second set of eyes when checking everything else. Also a huge shout out to House who saved the day at the last minute with a temporary fix until I can sort my own hubs etc out as when it comes to pain they were ours. I might still change the tyres over to my th's and use the mo's for track tyres but that can be a thing for the future. I just look at the mo's and because they are slightly dished they look like 13's

I spent the last few hours after Stu left yesterday giving the car a quick wash and a test drive around the land where the car is based, she drives spot on, the gearbox is direct and silky smooth which is nice to know considering me and Stu last worked on that a few years ago lol lol.

Heres just a few pics I took before locking the car away until next week. (its the same as before but cleaner with different wheels lol )
