View Full Version : Dans 'widearch' project (2016 updates)
lol lol gay
Well i have just made a phone call that i really didnt want to do, and it is said that i may need a splash more thinners in the paint as the orange peel was possibly from the paint being abit to thick. So, when i do the inside tomorrow this method will be tried and if it works the outside will be alot better as tbh thats the only bit that i have to TRY and get looking somewhere handy.
One thing i do know for sure is once i have done the landy afterwards i will probably pay someone to do it next time lol lol

Keep the orange peel, it'll help with the aerodynamics - like a golf ball :cool:lollollol

Dont for get that when you flat the paint back for polishing it removes the orange peel.
Yep thats right folks, monkey with a gun part 2 :thumb:
I stayed at work last night and soldiered on through the night prepping and fannying around so i could have a weekend hit on the car. The aim? to finish the shell paint and start doors bonnet etc on monday
I took the advice that was given to me with regards the paint and it flowed alot nicer out of the gunand the finish is 100% better, with the bonus of incurring only one annoying run. I have taken a few pictures this time so the brown lovers can see brown, grey's can see grey and black lovers can see black lol (as far as no daylight and a decent pic goes we have NOOOO chance of a true colour :tard: ) The paint is all but hard now so a very glossy finish:eek:
(please be aware these were on my phone in false light so not great :wtf: )

I know its hard to tell from a pic but it looks nice and shiny so top job in my book! lol
Good work Dan.Does look brown tho to me.
I will have to pop down and see it next week as got no work at the mo also i have your grill for you from Ash.
It looks to me like it will go nicely with the header tank when the head goes porus lol lol lol
Very nice work dude, looks great and looks nice a nice shine. No turrets or welded in brace on the rear then..
Looking good dan! Looks a bit, dare i say it, beige? I like it though, old school colours ftw!
lol lol Well hopefully i will have the bonnet etc done on tuesday so i can carry them out into the daylight for a true colour indication, the boss man came down again yesterday to see how its going and loves the colour , considering i am doing his landy straight after thats the main thing lol
Came back in this morning with a fresh set of eyes and overall its gone on ok again, not as much orange peel and still as shiney as the pics above.
Only bit that has annoyed me is the central part the handbrake sits on, I'm thinking some bits must have fallen off my clothing whilst positioned there to spray the whole of the inside which means my comment about an elephant or crow or some form of wildlife sticking out the paint is true lmao. Not the worst place for it to happen once the car has some bits bolted in but all the same its a shame considering the main area's came up better than expected.
nevermind, this whole thing was to be a learning curve which in itself is living up to its purpose with many lessons learnt
I can see a little yellow in it. lol

Now i said i wouldnt put these up as last night i was devastated with the outside finish, proper upset me after evrything else going ok.
Basically the finish is awefull, very even with only 2 small runs, but very orange peely, it did this on the third coat so thinking maybe dry spray or to hot etc etc as i was being overcareful. After a good nights sleep and looking at it i think it will flatten, if not i will just have to sand it back a touch and do another coat which at the end of the day was truly expected as even experienced guys have bad days and i have only picked up a gun for 4 days in total.
So there we go, even when things seem to go ok, with total inexperience there will always be something to bite you in the **** and remind you of such :(

very good but i was hopeing it was brown lol.
Looks good mate and ive still got your grill on the back seat of my car.

12-01-09, 12:06 PM
Well Dan I cant tell 100% from the pics as to how bad (according to you) it is, as it still looks like as you say you could flat it, or try another coat on top, are/have you putting a coat of lacquer on?
But i am still loving it!:thumb:
You'll just have to take my word for it on the quality, bay and inside is ok so its a great shame, but there we are.
No need for laquer as its a gloss paint, as seen in the pics its plenty shiney enough even in untouched form without a flat and a polish.
I'm just pleased the colour is as good as i hoped, now come to a sunny day and it could look totally different again, but i doubt by much as its just a flat colour paint, no fancy pearl or metallic. What i can say is i checked out any shadows the arches i blended in picked up and ran my eye across the area's, and i do believe i got away with that quite nicely lol

Its chocolate milkshake brown.
Top work Dan.
I do like that colour! I know what you mean when you said it will go really well with the wheels now!!!
Thanks for all the positive replies chaps, starting to feel abit better now, spoke to my mate who owns a body shop, went through every detail of my operation and i think he summed up my fatal mistake, basically on the last coat i should of applied it thicker with this stuff as the last coat i put on didnt sink in properly. There are a thousand other reasons as rexy has said to me but this sounds to correct considering the other area's came out fine and i didnt adjust anything inbetween. Also the fact the second coat was awesome and i fatally decided on a third as i had the paint in the gun.
As regards the colour i am sure on a sunny day it will look different again lol if we get a decent day i will get some proper pics that show the blending etc. Today just before leaving for home i attacked the top of the front wing with some 1200 paper and by god this paint is hard, but it will stop me rubbing through to easy, and it does appear to be flatting ok going by my brief stint so i may salvage it without doing another coat :)
Looks good dude, I was gonna say just get in a start flatting it but you clearly have. Just be carefull using the 1200, stay away from all the edges and keep it nice and wet.
Good work.

I dont think you've gone too far wrong really in the scheme of things. A very creditable first effort:thumb: I think its going to work out well and look really nice when finished:)
Just shows that these jobs can be tackled successfully by beginners
I've got some 80's here if you need them to flat that paint down with dan lol ;)

looking good mate, put a bit of fairy liquid in with the water your using when flatting it with the 1200 grit mate, help's no end ! get the machine polisher on the go after and it should look sound, best of luck !
You not finished this yet!
lol
Looking good matey - just read the thread all the way through - cant wait to see it!
Nope since the last lot of pictures this has stood still tbh. I have been crashing on with the bossman's landy, basically did the same to that aswell but painted it without quite as many cock ups lol lol
Nova wise the parts are still rolling in steady and all major components are in place, just need putting togather and bolting on car. The last lot was courtesey of Lee who kindly brought it down to my work for me in his van. Which was unfortunate as someone has seen my paintwork standard first hand  lol lol lol lol lol
I have decided now after spraying the landy i am more than happy to Prep the nova outer again and just blast another 2 coats on, it will be quicker in the long run with alot less hassle :thumb:

Sounds good mate, cant hurt to give it some more paint eh! :thumb:
Scott
think of that extra weight the paint is going to add now dan.
might make the car unstable, think you will need wider wheels now.
Ok all you gay bears, so i have backed off the car to complete the landy, in the mean time i have been collecting parts ready so when i have resprayed the outside again i can slap the car together.
Amongst all my recent goodies i decided to purchase another engine. Its the one ernie used to run which for me personally has many advantages when it comes to being mated to other parts of my collection like gearbox and limiter etc etc. So i have been mixing and matching the 3 engines i have to make this one look abit prettier and sort my loose very good bits to build a good spare (very early 20xe owns most of this so will be the base spare lol)
Here is my dilemma, the following pictures, i like both styles. The first one is the aluminium plug cover that i have just painted matt black with the letters left shiny, and the second one is the good old redtop cover. Obviously the differences go beyond basic colour but i just cant make my mind up. Opinions welcome :thumb:

Ok so now the last roll of things to do is coming up i thought i better give this thread a small kickstart.
First off if we cast back through the thread we all know i screwed the paint up on the outside first time, so this time i had some help and although i did paint a few bits on the outside my paint man did the major stuff and watch over me. I also painted and bolted the cage in ready, and have started doing things like steering rack and wiring loom etc.
Colour wise there has been a small change due to issues but i am still happy with the outcome considering its a trackday car and the paint work has still cost me £0  which by any standards is cheap enough lol
Heres a couple of pics to to get things rolling again, i had just buffed the car with only a quick wax to be done later
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0450.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0451.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0453.jpg
Now i know a few will hate the colour as shown in the pics, but once the wheels are on and the graphics are done the idea will come to life. Its one of those things that i can see clearly but noone would get until its finished to see.
Cheers guys, i wasnt sure on the cage being silver, but as i look ahead to fitting the silver engine with the detailing in the bay and the obv the nice big silver wheels on the outside i think that in itself should theme in quite nicely
i take it its going to have perspex sliders so you can lean through and open the doors lol.
Looks great in the colour!

Looks good, if its anywhere as good as your old shell it'll be a cracking build.
the standard of the build in terms of purpose will be better than the last one, although the actual attention to detail from a 'look pretty' perspective will be know where near as i have done alot of the work myself blindly. This for me isnt an issue this time as the last one was pretty to look at, this one is just going to get used and abused

Looking good - i second the above!
That colour looks really good, i like the idea of making the car competitive without adding power to the engine, more folk should go along those lines.
cheers muzzy, that was really the whole idea behind my old 8v, that was competitive in a fairly big way even though it was down on power compared to alot of things. This will have a small power/torque gain higher up the rev range but overall the package should be alot better.
I took lee down to my work this afternoon so we could draw up a game plan of what we needed, i think even he was pleased with how its coming as he saw abit more than the pictures show and in the flesh.
Springs posted you big ghey

i have looked thought just see the wheels and size et49 8x15 225/45/15 and i have looked on compomotive site and they don't do that size. I'm only asking as i have just got a wide arch nova and everyone has said to look on this thead to see how he has avoided using widetrack sorry.

09-04-09, 05:29 PM
Knowing Dan he probably just found some freak of nature wheels that were one offs (a bit like him self!)
Search the net for them mate, I'm sure they made more then one set.
Scott
they probably arent ET49 to get an 8" rim in without mullering the inner arch clearences.
You know you can actually ask compomotive if they can make stuff rather than relying on a website that is probably not every often updated
Thats looking pretty sexy for paint the colour of the bottom of a puddle:plol
Seriously tho, I think the silver detailing of the cage etc is inspired - it'll set off the colour and help frame it.
NICE!:D

the shells looking ace mate really nice!!
cheers chaps, the ball is rolling nicely now so i thought i better add some updates.
First off though, in response to the wheels, alas as per in my thread previously, the details of what i have done with the wheels i would prefer to keep private until i have them fitted and rolling, purely as i wont give out wrong information until its proven to work. There are many variables in what i am doing that we are unsure of, what work may/may not be created and also in the long run there are cheaper ways depending on your imagination and purpose for the vehicle.
Now back to the progress
First off fitted my trusty old brake lines
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/BRAKE1.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/BRAKE2.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/BRAKE3.jpg
Then we fitted the box to the engine and fitted it in and tidied it up
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/ENG1.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/ENGINE2.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/ENGINE3.jpg
Obviously once it was all fitted we slapped a few extra parts on and fitted the bumper and lights for the 'almost' finished look with the bonnet just rested not secured. NOTE there are no indicators, this isnt an issue as we sourced a very random set for the bumper from the scrap yard, they have the same contour as the bumper so will sink in lovely but alasd we do not know what they are off, but should be fitting them early next week
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/CARFR.jpg
By midweek apart from a few bolt on parts it should be ready for a final spanner check and start thinking about an mot. The big panic now is getting the graphic designs for 4 vehicles and getting the nova done first and asap as that truly will be the icing on the cake
im al excited for ya. looking great mate
Looks awesome from the front Dan. Cant wait to see the Th's fitted!

Wide arched Mk1 looks sweet matey :thumb:
Indicators sunk into the front bumber will look different aswell.
Dude thats looking good! Front end looks great.
Please please dont sink anything in to the bumper tho!
Use a side light style holder and cut it in to the headlight casing in the bottom of the lights, so they light the headlight up. Looks so much neater and nicer.
you'll just have to trust me on this one for ease of mot purposes etc, but the indicators just settle the front abit more and look great ;)
The indicators are truely random, we found them on top of a car at the scrappers. Someone must have removed them and then decided not to take them or forgot to pick them up. They are near as dammit the same width as the headlights and slightly higher than a MK2 golf variant (that Jack used). We've done a test fit with just the lenses and they just look right for some reason. Running the indicators in the sidelights did cross my mind, but you run into all sorts of issues, namely you end up with no sidelights, and secondly the indicators need to be visible even whilst on main beam, so integral indicators only work with projector lights. Nova lights would wash the orange out completely.
Also to add to Dans jammienes, he's running Chris T's old system (which was on a MK2) so I assumed the tailpipe was going to stick out at the wrong angle for a GTE rear bumper. Turns out it pokes through the hole perfectly. I dont know where he gets his luck from!
Should be running Tuesday, we would have got it running yesterday but we had to go shopping for a new loom and then chop out all the useless stuff.
i dont call it jamminess i prefer to call it perfect execution of plans lol lol
Hats off to you Dan - that looks sweet as!
Loving the home made shell dolly!
No, you dont fit them insted of side lights! You fit them in the same way ie: same holder, but on the other side.
So you still have all the normal lights, and the indi flashes from the bottom corner.
Kicking myself really
However, more time and space than i had til about now as it happens.
Glad it went to a good home.
Really cant wait to see it finished.
Bagsy a ride pal! :)

lol
lol lol lol benders lol lol lol
The truth behind the engine, well the rev limit will be set to about 7400 roughly which when coupled to the quaife setup and tweeked should make it plenty fast enough for some fun. I could annoy people with far more power with the 140bhp smallblock, so with a minor power gain/lighter car and a whole new ball game handling wise this will be alot faster than the previous creation.
Also on a serious note i am a strong believer in setup not so much power hence my old smallblock stopped at a respectable power level. Setup is where the speed initially comes from. Power is all good, but anyone who owns the tb'd monsters of our scene will/should agree that taming/dialling in the more powerful setups can be alot more work, where as 150-160bhp can be fairly easily contained and setup to make it an ABC lesson in track driving. Like my old car, stu turned into Matt Neal for those 15 laps yet even he admits he couldnt drive for toffee back then in a strange car.
Options wise i have 4 tyre choices, depending on ease of use/ trailer queen only/ optional trailor queen with limited miles blah blah blah. Obviously tyre size has turned out to be alot easier than i expected but the choices are expensive, so making the right decision is paramount as trying to get hold of another spare set of wheels the same is nigh on impossible at this time and would only cost another small fortune with tyres on top again.
Once that is sorted i can decide do i need a trailer, or will i just insure/tax it for the first year and then invest later. Insurance and tax is the cheaper option but can carry hassles as my luck WILL run out at some point and a traier would be handy lol lol
Its looking good, proper 'ard with the wide-ness
It needs insurance for test drive goodness lol
Good news on the battery.
Insure it and get some test driving done.

Although I haven't been practising what I preach, I think that you are far more likely to arrive at a more satisfying car to drive overall if you do what Dans doing and start off by concentrating on handling rather than power. In my experience a car that is slightly underpowered is far more confidence inspiring when matched to a good chassis than the other way round and therefore ultimately more enjoyable
Come on Charlie, we all know to have proper fun on a trackday you need enough power to turn the diff into puree, and make big holes in the block :)
On a serious note, i have to congratulate you on yet another stunning welding job. At least when these gargantuan tyres break the hubs off on the first bend, the shell will stay perfectly straight :)

One thing I didn't realise until talking to Gaz about spring setups was the tyre choice also determines what rate springs to go for. For semi-slicks like 888s/a048s you need a much higher poundage than you would for a road (wet) tyres. So do you then have 2 sets of springs at hand at every trackday too??
This is one of the main issues with adapting a road car for track use. It all ends up being a a series of compromises which lead me to stop driving my car to track days. Its easier and eventually cheaper to set the car up for optimum track use which means stiff springs and prolly just 1 type of tyre. At least you know that if it is reasonably dry, you will have a car thats able to close its (and hopefully yours) abilities.
spring setup was determined along with most of my setup idea's and has all been taken into account so the car is based on a package of parts to work together, not just a few bits chucked here and there.
The only things i have to fine tune and work out correctly is the front geometry which will be done on its initial shake down :thumb:
time for another small update, myself and lee have spent a few days gathering parts and working through the crappy jobs. The loom has been stripped and fitted along with the clocks and lights etc, and the engine now runs after a quick trial burst this morning.
Also as it was abit damp this morning i tackled the random indicators that we found. I think they are the finishing touch on the front before the graphics go on, i know many people will say clears would be better, but then i always prefered the orange ones on my old car and this is no different, they just help to break the front up abit :D

first trackday i am unsure of tbh, thats something to sort out once it is fully mobile and had a brief shakedown. Benn the clocks are mounted on an alloy shelf that we designed for them back when i built the grey car, just a case of fitting them the same. Ermm here's a pic of them in the old car......
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/Image00002.jpg
same place as his last car.
looking good Dan even tho i see it earlyer lol.
Ah cool, basicly the same place i was thinking. Couldnt remember if you had the chicken bar or not.
Looks great.
First off on this update i must apologise for the quality of the pictures, my phone appears to be getting worse :(
BUT as its a worthy update we will just have to suffer them lol
This afternoon i went off to get these fitted.......
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0490.jpg
Some nice 225/45/15 boots for the shiney bits :D
Then obviously with me being a big child i decided to fit the rears on and see how they looked, bit of a fail moment as the rear bumper is still missing, and the front is still 2ft in the air on axle stands so the rear wont sit down onto the rim as it will be, but i think we get an idea

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0495-1.jpg
i am hoping to have this mobile again beginning of the week and if so we can roll the old girl out for some decent pics in the sun. On other area's i popped up to swindon to see my little friend ernie, and in the process acquired a strutbrace to fit around the ecotec pipe and the lambda sensor to make the car run like a happy bunny. As mentioned in his own thread he did try and get me to do a vin diesel style pose in his japcrap but luckily i had dirty cloths on so had to decline lol lol lol . If everything runs perfectly ( its been said my luck is going to run out by some) Then the car could be in full motorsport livery and on the road by next weekend, personally i feel this is a hell of a mission but we will see how it goes :wtf:

very nice mate + rep
I would say she's about 90% there. Got all the windows in, rear bumper, rest of the rear brake lines connected, handbrake cable, lower arms, tie bars, hubs and shafts.
Just needs the wiring tidied up in teh cabin, a set of seats and some front struts! :)
Looks very well done Dan... especially for a track car! However your last effort was all so very well done I had a good luck at trax a few years back before it got broke. I'll look forward to having a look round this one too. :)
Nick.
again thanks for the nice comments, it is coming out better than hoped but it is still a track car and is far from concourse.
Here are a few pics from todays work, pretty much same as yesterday with subtle differences as lee explained.......
First off got a normal windscreen in until i get the heated one, fitted the wiper and got the bonnet fixed properly with the pins etc and finished
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0516.jpg
Then fitted the rear bumper which sits nicely
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0527.jpg
another shot of the wheel sat in the arch nicely, shame i didnt go bigger on the tyre but a 225 shod in this type of rubber is more than enough
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0524.jpg
and one side on shot of the car sat on its stands awaiting the return of the front struts but looking alot more like it is nearly there
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff163/Dan_R_album/widearch/Photo0529.jpg
Me really likes. Good to see you cracking on with it.
Good work :D
updates have been abit slack lately but the work is still plodding on. Major update pics due in the next week or so as i am aiming to have the car put on its first public display at the national day.
The inside is 99% done now and the externals are of a similar level. The last big part of the puzzle is the stickering which leads me to this........

my new toy, i spent weeks and weeks scouring all known places to find one and it was looking like i would have to mot the car or drive to the ends of the earth to view and buy a trailor. Then i found this brian james trailer within 5 miles of my house at a very good price :D
So early next week i will hitch it up to the landy i built for my boss and get then both home to be stickered up, as the landy will double up as my tow vehicle (bossman thinks its hilarious having my own matching service vehicle :wtf: )
Dude it looks awesome! Huge rear tyre/wheel.
Trailors tasty.
nice trailer you've bought there :thumb:
and what can i say about the car it looks like a top job done very well matey,
Cant wait to see it out on the track
here's a better pic of the landy, as you can see it has a few similar style features as the nova :D

When's the nova getting a matching bull bar? Could come in handy for ''persuading'' people out of the way on trackdays ;)
tbh that did cross my mind but for pushing lee, would save him being towed off every time he ventures out when he gets a new nova sorted :thumb:
That comment is going to backfire like feck, purely because I have had such an input on this car :)
Huge rod related engine disasters are almost guaranteed :)

looking very nice although i think the indicators in bumper has spoiled it..
looking forward to seeing it complete though.
well thats it folks, i have just this afternoon got the car sat back on its wheels, it starts and moves forwards and backwards with ease.
Now just the final niggly jobs to do before tuesday when it goes off to be stickered up.
I have a few good pics to put up of it in all its glory and apart from it being damn dusty and in dire need of a wash, OMFG, to say i am happy is an understatement after all the hours of exploration in bodywork and horrible jobs like that which i know nothing of i think its beyond what i was expecting :thumb: :thumb:
Now after that little spat i have to admit i am still here at work tidying things away so i can wheel it in lol lol lol so the pictures will have to wait until i get home later unless limpy lee or jack gets their pictures uploaded first :D
Sounds good. Whats left to sort?

cheers guys, i was like a dog with 2 dicks once i had it sat properly lol lol lol Thats almost 3 decent builds in my time i can truly say i am happy about :D
The only marmite bit will be the graphics as some will like them due to what the car stands for/will be used for, and some will hate them after seeing those pics.
End of the day they are going on for a reason, as the car will eventually get used for more than just trackdays and the graphics are for part of that reason :thumb:

What can i say
Im in absolute awe of what you and the guys have done to it!
So so proud and impressed of how its turned out!
Really happy i sold it to you and not some other mug!
Its pretty much how i wanted it to be, bar the fact its a MK1, but the wing/indicator situation decided that.

My old man will also be equally impressed.

A lot of love and graft has gone into this. Have to say when I turned up today and saw it on the floor, I got a tiny bit emotional.
If it goes as well as it looks then we are definately onto a winner. Just got a lot of tweeking and setting up to do now.
That looks absolutely amazing....... And it looks like the graft you put in getting things to fit has truly paid off as the few I have seen dont fit very well with them type kits. Top marks Dan and team.

pure nova porn filth!
that looks like it means business
again thanks for all your comments, the bodywork side of things nearly killed me as i didnt think it was going to be as hard as it turned out to be (ignorance is bliss and all that) i'm really pleased its appeal is shared and it will be a shame to put the livery on but needs must, i just hope it completes the car.
At least it will make a few shows before it gets track battered to bad lol lol

Looks awesome Dan, any clue to what the decals will be?
Yeh i have an idea as i originally did the rough draft and then left it to the guy to sort out, there is stickerage on every panel but not ott imo, and the roof is just a huge PNG advert lol. End of the day it will be what it is as some help towards this result and future usage of the car is financially covered.
A few guys have seen the rough draft and like it so we will see, the big unveiling will be the national day then the pics will obv make their way onto here

No Gen to tell really Nath. Its the same setup that was on the grey car, the only difference is he's now running eccentric topmounts.
Wheel offset is the key :) We are slightly concerned at what the high grip levels are going to do to the bearings and the (IMO) weak 2.0 hubs, but at the end of the day, we're not going to solve a problem that isnt there, and if it does raise its ugly head, we have plans to rectify it anyway :)
Wow! The transformation from when I saw it to now is something else!
I can honestly say that although in the past I've not been much of a fan of wide arched novas from the looks point of view, this car has truly changed my point of view. It really does look the business from all angles. You've managed to make the aggressive stance look absolutely spot on with nice subtle touches. The indicators look like they were manufacturer designed to go there and I really like the rear window vents. The paint choice has ended up being an inspiration. It sits really well on those rims and tyres
Well done you lot! Top notch work:thumb:
