View Full Version : ** Lee's Barn ** Current status 'OPERATION PIKEY VAN'
Welcome to Lee's Barn. Where bodgery is an artform, and cheap is always best lol
We begin with the reshell of my beloved track car.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/Car%20Pictures/94146416-M.jpg
..so the mission starts here! Got the new car back with zero hassle and had a good poke around inside and out. Verdict? Bodywork is pretty amazing for a nova, and any problems with the chassis have been sorted properly, so all in all a good buy methinks. Heres the first of the pics...

Now for the shopping list which is getting scary!
Weld in 6 point FIA approved cage
Polycarb windows
Fiberglass Bonnet, tailgate, and if we can get them made.. Wings
LSD
Quaife box if money allows it
Cav linkage
Passenger footrest
Rear diffuser courtesy of Dar (thatll be the first buy to get it out of his garage :-)
Manifold and exhaust (again undecided)
New front brakes, possibly 4 pots (but again im not decided even whether to bother or what to go for, probably Wilwoods from N-TR if I do)
Everything else will be robbed from the poor blue one, eg Suspension, seats, harnesses, bumpers, skirts and spoiler, wheels and, of course, My XE
If the money allows it, i'd like to add some new cams and steel rods to it and get the bitch revving properly, but this might have to wait till next winter as that there shopping list aint cheap!
There might be a months gap before the next update as my unit isnt ready yet, but with a bit of luck, once it is, we'll push on with it and get it done!

Good little find that, looks solid enuff.
not a bad find that mate, can't wait to see the progress you'll make with it, what is exactly wrong with the old shell, is it just terminal rot?
yup, went round the blue one properly with a screwdriver yesterday, poked more holes in it than a chunk of leerdammer lol. Rear arches are only just holding on too!
Didnt drive it home, used the trailer!
I want it finished bt the fast show next year, that kind of marks the start of the season. It wont be a problem keeping my finger out of my bum, its more getting the money availiable to complete each stage lol
Yup, will be staying this colour, bumpers wheels skirts spoiler will be either anthrecite or black. Stickers are hanging off anyway so theyre definately being removed lol

Bugger! lol ive just got hold of a corsa merit badge for the back of my SR! Lmfao!

i did take it round the block once and thought the door handles were going to scrape on the floor lol
The Blue one is definately aweare something is up. Most of the sump bolts were either loose or half hanging out, the rads sprang a leak and the clocks have packed up!
Spit and glue for Combe methinks lol

I'm aiming for Trax next year for my rebuild - might see you there if you go!
know what you mean about the cash aswell - pain in the anus fecking car rebuilds - especially if you want something slightly different
Yep, I hear ya Ade!
Anyhoo, Today, I finally got started and made a lot of progress!! On Friday, i came to the end of my tether waiting for the previous owner of the barn to remove his stuff, so i moved all his ****e from the back to the front, leaving enough room for two cars
So this morning i loaded the blue one on the trailer and trundled off to the barn, but on the way, I picked up Dar, as the mention of a bit of spannering gets him moist to say the least! Blue one dropped off, it was back to Newbury for the meany greeny, still looking mint as ever!
Back to the Barn again (4 and a half hours driving for both cars!!!!), we got them parked up!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC05994_800x600.jpg
We got busy emptying the Green one of all the PVG show stuff where its lived for a while, and started fiolling the shelves with all the crap i cart around in the transit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC05995_800x600.jpg
Then we each grabbed a tool (oo err) and attacked the bitch!

Dar dispensed of the innards like a man possesed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC05997_800x600.jpg
While i stripped the front end and started prepping the engine for removal. Notice the front panel and inner wings, Solid as hell. Was very chuffed when it all came to bits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC06002_800x600.jpg
Note how far I have to bend down to reach the engine!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC05999_800x600.jpg
The only bolt on the car so far to give trouble was one of the fan coweling bolts. Out came the hacksaw!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC06000_800x600.jpg
Blue ones got a flatty due to my off at combe last month. oh well, like i care
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC06001_800x600.jpg
Big thankyou to Dar, thats a brill start since we were only up there for 4 hours, not including fag breaks and F1 qualifying.
Cups of tea = None (no lead for the kettle or water supply yet. Need to get some bottles of Evian
Cigs = 5
Eaten = 3 Tunes (im dying of a cold), sausage roll, think Dar had a sandwich.
Quote of the day = WHERE THE HELL IS ALL THIS LOOM COMING FROM???
Back up there monday, I intend to have the dash out, and the shafts out and the engine ready for removal.
start of a hectic winter then ?? wish i had somewhere like that to work on mine instead of my mates mum and dads drive lol
how long do you reckon it will take you then ??
hard to say. The strip down and prepping for welding wont take long at all. Then its getting it welded and getting the money for the cage etc...
Its going to be dictated by bank balance rather than time. I want it to be useable for next season!!
^^ i know that feeling - got a cage in mind ??
Possibly, i like Dave Marshall's Safety Devices cage, might get a weld in version of his.

looks like a good start on the new beast lee. I'm amazedat how much of the interior has paint on it, most shells just have a light bit of overspray, urs seems fully painted! bah just makes it heavier :p
I know, the boot floor rang alarm bells with me when i bought it, as it was so clean in there that it could only have had a shunt (plus a shiney new backbox) as well as brand new looking nuts holding the bumper on, but its like that inside everywhere! Its quite astonishing how mint it is!

I'm sure its misleading but, in the pics that lock up looks warm & cosy to work in?
Good progress.
Its very misleading lol. The end that i declined to take photos of doesnt have a door, and its lacking most of the wall, its just a gaping hole, and the wall behind that rear half of the lorry is completely missing lol
I have to wait for the bloke to get his finger out and remove all his crap, and then i can practise my brickying of which im very rusty!
ORR if its not to far, get a friend who works around various parts of the trade to give you a hand :thumb:
Your very kind my love, i will definately bear that in mind. Your expertise will come in very handy actually as i have to get rid of a bit of asbestos too!
We now have the shell completely stripped to nothing, bar the steering rack and column, rear beam, and front hubs
Next job is to remove the last bit of sound deadening and start prepping the seams for welding, as well as try to scrape enough money for the cage together!
Heres some more pics anyway..
Dash out revealing even more loom (cant believ how much wiring an SPi engine needs, there was less on the GTe loom i stripped out of the blue one!!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC06005_800x600.jpg
Engine oot no thanks to my useless engine crane which wouldnt lift it high enough, so the front panel chop happened earlier than expected! I would have dropped it on the floor but i decided, as I was on my own at that particular time, i reasoned it was easier and less risky of damaging anything to lift it out the top.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/DSC06003_800x600.jpg
Even more gone
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DVC00019.jpg
Dar did a blinder with the heat gun and disposed of all the sound deadening from inside

Pedals out

And a nice bare engine bay
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DVC00021.jpg
Im pleased to say that after a day mostly under the car removing the tank, brake and fuel lines, i discovered no horrors, and its as solid underneath as it is on top!
Cups of tea = 3
Eaten = 1 Bounty bar, sausage roll, Packet of Doritos

Looking nice and light there Lee  Thats the only time yours will be lighter than mine lol
Seriously tho, fair play for cracking on with it, make the rest of us look lazy :thumb:
lol, its unreal how light it is, i pushed it to the back of the workshop today with one finger lol
Anyway, after a days hard work, we finally got the new one fully built and ready to rumble!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova13.jpg
So naturally, we had to test drive it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova4.jpg
But on a serious note, it was a kind of 'commitment' day, as the original plan was to leave the stripping of the blue one till absolute last in case i was nowhere near ready for next season, but due to the lack of space because of before mentioned sh1te that hadnt been taken away, space was begining to run out, so i took the decision to rip it apart. Shame to see it in such a state, but hey!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova11.jpg
To coin a phrase..... 'Low-Ride-errrr'
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova12.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova6.jpg
Then I hit on a problem, seeing as i have such a useless engine hoist, how do i lift the car up high enough to drag the engine out from under the car? I pondered for a while, whilst smoking a ciggy sat on the forklift truck which is parked in the barn............. Then it hit me!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova16.jpg
Last job was to grind off a piece of the floor which holds the gearbox mount on, as it wasnt coming off the conventional way. Ill grind the mount off the piece of floor at a later date
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Nova1-1.jpg
Tomorrow, i just need to remove the fuel tank, and it can be taken away to be crushed lol
Badly need some money for a cage now!
Wouldn't it have been easier to just lift the block out the top with the forklift? I wondered why you hadn't used it on the new shell as it's clearly viable in the first photo of the unit.
Much easier to drop an XE out the bottom if its still got the box attached.
And theres a perfectly good reason why i didnt use the forklift earlier.......
.... Im an idiot!

its girly blue lol
I was up the barn again on wednesday, just to finish off some little bits, when i decided to get my screwdriver out and have a little prod at some bubbly bits of rust on the front panel and inner wing. Im kind of wishing i didnt, because i opened up 3 enormous holes and one small one! Just goes to show what you can miss when your concentrating on making sure the structural metal isnt rotten! So I went off on one and luckily, these were the only bad bits I found on the whole car, so Today, I went back up there armed with a pot of P40, some filler, and a tin of Waxoyl
Heres the offending holes after I had opened them up to bare good metal!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00007.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00008.jpg
Out comes the fiberglass, and with the help of some wire mesh, plugged the gaps!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00009.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00010.jpg
A bit of the good ole filler, a bit of sanding, and I had a pretty good result.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00011.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00012.jpg
Slapped on some Waxoyl behind the repairs, and thats another job out the way. Ill finish the repair behind the headlight when the weldings finished and Im ready to paint the bay up.
An I did consider a a new front panel, but the rest of it looks like new on the back, which is odd, and also, its a track car, and you have to draw the line somewhere at how much effort goes into something that you could stack into the tyres at any given loss of talent
Cage should arrive at the end of the week, so the welding can begin!
Good stuff Mr Lee. Im sorry I couldn't make it up today for a chat. Not alot to do now other than wait for the cage to turn up and get it all welded uphttp://www.racecar.net/castlecombeforum/icon_smile_cool.gif

Depends on how much you put in bt!!!!!!
Gotta agree with geoff though, i'd would've welded some plates over too whilst you're doing the rest of it. But hey thats only my opinion!
(p.s; plus it'll all fall out when you bend it!!!!!!!!!)
(pp.s; you had best not have removed the stickers Lol!)

Sorry John, stickers are gone, took 5 minutes with a fudge wheel which everyone believes damages the paint lol
Im probably going to weld a plate into the headlight surround after giving it soe thought, but the bottoms are fine and if i do stuff it, the last thing ill be worried about is a few small bits of fiberglass falling out lol lol

The usual choppage craig, as well as fiberglass tailgate, bonnet, and hopefully wings. Spare wheel wells coming out, and we'll probably do an oli, and drill loads of holes in it lol
Some of it will wait till next year though, as I cant afford side mounted seats at the mo, and im not chopping out the centre strenghtener that runs accross the car until ife got them.

Cheers chris, hopefully finally get out on track with you mate!
I never do, its rude to speak with my mouth full!!
Today, as we've pretty much run out of things to do until the cage arrives, we decided to start getting the Dash into a shape that we wanted. I recently bought a little Dremel Multitool, and it rocks! Its already been great for grinding the seams in hard to get areas, and we also used it to chop up the dash. Some of the dash brackets that we dont need were removed too....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00016.jpg
And this is the amount of dash we decided to leave, The heater contol holes will probably recieve some guages, but i havent decided which ones yet, and Im going to make an Ally switch panel to sit where the vents were. Im also going to get hold of some Foamex to plug the gap left where we chopped the glovebox half off. Its ended up nice and light anyway, which was the most important factor!

To those who aren't aware that the Alternator fouls the drivers side chassis leg (do you people still exist? LMAO) there are two ways of solving this problem. You can either attack it with a big hammer, which is probably the most popular option... OR you can cut and box section it which means you dont weaken anything (even adds some strength). After discussions with Dar, I decided the second route was better.
Lee Pursey has done a pukka job with it as you can see....

Looking good mate!
Don't know if its too late but I'd make the alternator cut out a little longer. I did mine like below and it gives you just a little but more room to reach in and adjust it and to remove the belt easier!

p.s also note the cut off for the bottom pulley! Also done to allow just that little bit more access ;)

Cheers pal. We have actually looked at making it a tad longer at the top. Ive never had to make room for the bottom pulley though, but thats definately a consideration.
Some more weldage and choppage!

Yesterday morning, some early birthday presents from the Mrs arrived  Just what the doctor ordered, FB tailgate and bonnet!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00034.jpg
While waiting for the welding to be finished off, i decided to wield my degreaser and paintbrush, and start to freshen up some bits and bobs. First to get attacked was the engine and box, and I even managed to polish up my rocker cover after about 2 years of neglect!

Then, while i had the brush covered in green, i freshened up the Servo as well. The Hammerite green makes a cool effect, it looks better than my camera can manage to show.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00038.jpg
Then i did the brakes (which i had been putting off due to one of them being completely covered in CV grease from a ruptured boot which id ignored for the last 2 events!)

Cheers Keith. Yeah, mucho welding, unfortunately im usually over influenced by Dan lol
The welding is as good as complete! Which means hopefully ill be over the Flu in time to do the spraying this sunday
Some more pics...
Rear strut brace and plate welded in nicely

The cage offered up a bit of an oddity, whereas one of the rear drops to the arch wouldn't quite reach! Instead of having to send the whole thing back and waiting god knows how long for a replacememnt, we decided to box section out to meet it.

Call me a dunce but whats special about red oxide paint - seen a few people use it, any particular reason over something like hammerite for example?
Normal primer is actually porus which lets moisture in, whereas red oxide primer has anti corrosion properties and isnt porus. As for Hammerite, its not an ideal basecoat lol
Makes you wonder why i didnt use it on the floorpan after i removed the sound deadening doesnt it?
Its because i didnt have any at the time lol
stuartp
30-11-06, 02:52 PM
red-oxide isint as good as it use to be so im told (dad) it has less oxide in (cheaper to produce) like you said bottlethroddy its still a good base coat!!!
Red oxide is always a good idea on fresh welds as it proctects them from oxygen reation with impurities (sp?). Also the quality depends on the source of the paint.
Matt2107
30-11-06, 03:45 PM
Red Oxide better than Grey Stripe?
I normally use Acid Etch primer if I go back to bare metal on panels etc.

Acid Etch is fine, it shouldn't cause any problems with fresh welds done on a gassed mig, but I believe there may be a reaction with any slag left from a fluxed core weld.

Havent checked this thread for a while. Youve certainly been getting on with it.
Good welding in the boot & in the engine bay. Are you going to stitch the chassis legs to the floor too?
Cheers craig. Yeah, that was one of the last jobs he did.
The progress made this weekend has been awesome, im extereeemly pleased to say the least! Got the shell back from Lee (who has made an awesome job of the welding, despite being thwacked on the swede by a large piece of plant machinery). Anyway, we dragged the car back to Dars garage, and proceeded to get on with sealing the bottom with Shultz front to back! we then began to prep the shell for paint. In proper track car style, we were ready in about an hour including the masking lol!
Dar brandished the spray gun, and proceeded to rape the poor shell with primer, working front to back.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00047.jpg
At this point, it has to be said that, while walking back from outside grabbing a gulpfull of fresh air, my back popped in style, and i was instantly crippled! Why, i have no idea, but suffice to say i had to call it a day and drove home in a lot of discomfort, expecting the whole weekend to be written off! Back home, i ladled on half a tube of deep heat, and slept on a hot water bottle, and luckily, i woke up with just a dull pain which was more than bearable. So back to bristol I went and we proceeded to finish off the priming, and then start to lay on some colour. This is the only part of this particular job I can get credit for TBH as I LOVE the colour, it is exactly what i was going for, which is what the bumpers and skirts will end up painted in too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00051.jpg
After 2 nights work, a bit of N64 Mario Karting and a lot of effort on Dars part, this was the result..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00058.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00057.jpg
And this is the guy I have to thank, King Dar with a spray gun!! Thank you buddy, i owe you a big sloppy one!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00045.jpg
Anyway, we dropped the car back to the unit and i was back on my own, so thought id better put my back into some graft before the day was up, so first i decided to fit the tailgate and bonnet ready to get the pins fitted properly before theyre painted. Firtst job was to remove the hinges from the old tailgate and screw them to the new one..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00060.jpg
Got the lights in so i could line it up properly..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00062.jpg
Next on the list was fit a nice ally bar where the front panel used to be..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00063.jpg
Then i got the wings back on after bashing the lips back (didnt take too much care as i still intednd to get FG units made up), re fittted the headlights and slapped the bonnet on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00067.jpg
Last on the list before i called it a day was to rebuild my freshly painted pedals and re-fit them, as well as the brake servo...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00065.jpg
Bear in mind the graphite paint is a pearl so the flash bounces off it at odd angles, making it look patchy.
Next on the job list is to chop the loom down and re-fit, remove the rear beam to freshen it up, as well as the lower arms which need boxing, and pick a new fuel tank up from Stupot. Got no money left until after chrimbo now so the engine wont be going back in for a while :-(
Once again, a huge thanks to Dar.
looking spot-on lee !! its coming together now, altho i always struggle rebuilding stuff after ive stripped it lol
hopefuly ill be seeing it in the flesh next year at some (hopefuly all) PVG track days :thumb:
lee, how easy was it too remove the tailgate hinges from the old tailgate?
lee, how easy was it too remove the tailgate hinges from the old tailgate?
it was pretty easy, just drilled out the spot welds and smacked it with a screwdriver and hammer! I then made the holes oversize to give some adjustment when re-fitting.

Cant be ****d, its only a track car lol
Cheers Kris, i intend to be out at the April Action day at combe, it may not be up to spec by then but it'll be there!
Popped up to Stuarts on Wednesday which aquired me a new fuel tank, some ally chequer plate and some bonnet pins! Thankls bud :dankk2:
Well, back in the garage after a week or so of lazyness, and i can feel it too, im aching like a biatch today! I had the fun task of removing the last of the stubborn nuts and bolts holding all the front suspension on, but after a lot of huffing and puffing, got it all off. That enabled me to get some paint on the tie bars, and get the TCA's ready to be welded into corsda style box sections.
I also decided to get the bonnet pins fitted, which means i can now remove the bloody bonnet and tailgate which were starting to get on my tits when trying to do other jobs! Also fitted pins to the front bumper, but decided against the rear as I cant see any reason for them due to it being fiberglass. I appear to have got all the panel gaps pretty much spot on so im quite chuffed!

Looking good, however I will annoy you by saying that your car will now fold in on itself because you cut the slam panel out. Im bored of hearing it myself about mine lmfao

yeah well thats what all the "top" people on my local krooze site think, they reckon that because their dads uncles brother 3000bhp skyline has got a 5 inch think solid titanium slam panel which is part of the cradle for the engine. And therefore my corsa must obey the same rules, all it does is hold the bonnet down an it doesnt even do a good job of that lmfao. Also removing the plastic inner arches means that when i boot it the turrets fold in together.

Thats all good then! I was getting the impression it was going to be the std colour of the shell or something mundane.
I dont have any suggestions off the top of my head but I am fond of robbing stripe schemes & sponsors from existing rally cars or F1 teams & then spinning it totally by using totally wrong colours.
Not my place to decide though. I love the interior & eng bay though, I wanted to do exactly that to mine.

BTs is a track only car so doesnt have a reg, think you just change the chassis number on the V5, in your case the V5 of K48 HWR

After seeing Mr Hear5ey bang his engine in, i decided it was about time i did the same, so I armed myself with a block and tackle, and a Dar (which are quite useful when petted correctly)!
First job was to bodge the rear beam on so the car would pivot (using TCA bushes as Im still waiting for my stiff buggers to arrive from Mr Astley). Lots of other goodies had arrived from him though (some pics will follow tomorrow), so I had a fitting kit! Then it was just a case of hoping and praying the dodgy old roof beams would support a car, and then an engine lol
Anyway, boring engine fitment pics follow, as well as half my fuel system which i fitted this morning.
About to be slid under...

More to follow tomorrow, i was allowed a full weekend this week lol
Today, Mr Ernie popped over with a wad of cash after selling his GTe and bought my half cage from the blue one for the STICK. Then we trundled off to purchace a trailor for him in Bath.
On the way he happened to mention he had a brand new inlet gasket hanging on his garage wall! So after we dropped off his trailor and cage, we bogged off back to the barn and carried on plumbing the engine in.
Pretty much all done now, all thats missing is the Rad, a manifold, one fuel pipe and the harness!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00066.jpg
Id forgotten how tight it was getting the Alternator on, and because Im a fool, i put the bodies on first lol Nothing like grazed knuckles to show you put some graft in, thats what I always say! Anyway, the cutout did its job, and it fits nice and snug.

I quite enjoyed putting that engine in with you. Now that the ciggies arn't in full flow im enjoying winding you up and watching you go lol
Did a bit of mincing today, got my seats bolted in properly, drilled holes for the harness points and also put all the engine harness in.
I also bolted in the battery box, and made a strap using the now defunct middle lap belt. That should stop it clouting me in the bonce if i 'Do A Hear5ey' LOL. It should also keep the scrutineers happy if i take it sprinting this year!

Sri looms are a pain in the derrierre too, have the fire extinguisher ready before you connect the battery, no-one wants to see that shell burnt.
Good to see you have fun removing the spi engine loom, Lol.
Well, i got it all in, and it didnt work, due to some stupidness by me (namely chopping out the hazard plug because i was rushing. So Dar gave me his MK1 loom, and im currently having fun and games with this one too, namely splicing the dials plug onto the fecker! There be some dodgy colour differences, and theyre scary!
Well i nearly broke down in tears this weekend, basically Im a fool and wasnt concentrating when chopping the loom down, and basically I chopped the hazard block off. As we all know, the whole Nova electrical system runs through the hazard switch thanks to those spanish feckers, and after attempting to splice it back in again, it wouldnt work so loom number 1 was binned! Dar then donated a MK1 loom which I attempted to splice MK2 clocks onto... again, mammoth failiure.
So I ripped the wiring loom out of the blue shell, and it works like a charm (of course). Basically a day and a halfs work wasted! But hey, you live and learn. Next time i chop a loom down ill be concentrating
ANyway, after all the faffing around, i have the car fully wired and working. First job was to chop a bit more off the dash to get it to fit around the cage, and then make a template for the switch panel..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00078-1.jpg
Then me and Dar went to see one of his mates who has a metalwork shop, and he cut me a piece of ally out and bent it for me, then it was back to the barn to fit the switches..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00079.jpg
Then I had to do my own bit of cutting to make the ignition/battery cut switch..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00081.jpg

Today was 'Get some Flange for the Fannymould' day. Me and Dar are having the same exhaust systems made up at the same time to save a bit of cash, and we've had the manifolds for a week or so, but they come with no flanges, so today we had to bog off to Longlife to get some welded on.
Was an enjoyable trip apart from having to be seen in the GTi6 again. Dar rekons the Pug was designed to embarrass me in the sense that its fast etc.. I think its in the sense that i need to wear dark glasses so no one sees me! Not to worry though, as a forign lorry driver kicked his **** on the back roads. LOL. (basically the lorry turned off, then we caned it to the next junction, turned off and there he was again, he must've been tankin!!!!!)
Anyhoo, heres the fresh Ashley manifold, with its nice new flange...

Today I are mostly been chopping holes in the floorpan :-) Got my cav shifter back from Lee's, had 3 inches taken off it and all the bends straightened. I was quite surprised how quickly i set it up too, basically just slipped the collar, tightened it, and found it was pretty much in exactly the right place! Things like that dont happen often lol In fact, i spent more time bashing the crap out of the quaife gearknob I had from Stu, to get the thread out of it. Fits like a glove with a bit of insulation tape :-)

Other mincing around included fitting the last of the harness points and fitting my harnesses, and also making a blanking plate for the matrix hole, this time I had to cut a corner out allow the engine harness through (christ knows where QED thinks it should be, but it aint anywhere convenient, ill tell you that, ive had to suspend the ECU just the other side of the hole!)
Bit of bathroom sealant (something i use a lot of in my work, covers up gaps in conduit a treat lol)

Yup, nearly done now, you complete and total cheeky bastid lol
Should have drilled and used a grommet, that stuf is a pig to remove. You just know deep down you'll need to get the loom out or add something in to it.
It's looking good mate. Job well done.

Thought about it, but left the plate till i was absolutely sure that was it for the wiring lol. Got plenty of other holes in the bulkhead to go through if need be anyway.
Got my shaft back from Lee's, had 3 inches taken off it and all the bends straightened. I was quite surprised how quickly i set it up too, basically just slipped the collar, tightened my grip, and found it was pretty much in exactly the right place! Things like that dont happen often lol In fact, i spent more time bashing the crap out of the knob I had from Stu, Fits like a glove with a bit of insulation tape :-)
   Wrong section I think!!
Lol how very rude BT!! Looks cool though :thumb:
:p
^^ now that was sleazy !!
That quote hardly looks edited lol lol

/\/\/\ hahah Good one lynz
Wohoo! Tie bar bushes turned up yesterday, so i got up the barn to get the front suspension rebuilt and the car back on the floor!
First job was to fit aforementioned tiebars and bolt up to the TCA's using some nice new bottom balljoints :-)
(forgive the finger, that was Christian being helpful lol He brought me up a headlight switch though bless him, cheers pal)
Nothings being tightened too much as i still have to buy some new CV's to build my shafts up *d'oh*

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00107.jpg
Next to be thrown on was the hubs and coilovers Sorry for all the pics, but this will be the only time everything is so clean, i would imagine the massive amounts of infield and gravel will scrub it all up nicely bu next year LOL
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00108.jpg
Next up were the brakes, probably wont be on too long as the first 'after build' mod I have planned is a nice big set of Billet jobbies :-)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00110.jpg
And there she be, back on the floor at last! That was pretty much all I could do till some more money appears in my account in a week or so, but its starting to look like a track car!

About time:roll:
Looking alot more complete now:thumb:
Get that paint sorted and lets get the rest of the panels on:cool:

Ill pop up t'shop when i become slightly more flusher and get some, and we can have another bout of lung coatage lol
Not sure I want my lungs coated in that gay blue colour though :p
What gay blue colour? everythings going the same colour as the insidey bits?
Cool, I don't mind that. Going to look a tad odd with the bonnet & tailgate a different colour to the rest of the body.
EDIT: Your mouth looks painted on in that last piccy lol
I forgot about them, and its fecking green. Just because some tw@t at vauxhall called it blue, doesnt mean that it is! lol
Wont matter though, the graphite will dull the 'gay blue' in your lungs anyway.
Nah its deffo blue. I looked it up. Its Vauxhall Gay Blue, just ask for that when ordering the paint and they will mix up the right colour:thumb:
Despite the colour it really is all looking sweet now.

Should be some money arriving next week, but im on holiday then so wont be cracking on till I get back. Home straight now though, i intend to be done way before combe.
stuff your holiday, get nova finished lol
lol yay , more progress lol
stuff your holiday, get nova finished lol
Id love to, but i value my testicles lol IIRC i refused to go away last year due to work, I cant refuse this year due to the car!
i'll let you off them, just this one lol
just read through the whole thread. very good progress, cant beleive how quickly its come together, well not exactly fast but faster than most rebuilds and much quicker than miner, mine still hasnt got an engine in it! got too many cars and engines ying about in the way at the moment.
theres a co.on ebay selling the fiberglass bonnet and boot...thought that may help
Bit of a boring update here, as im still going through a bit of a lean patcxh in regards to the ole fundage. Hopefully it'll be all finished on schedule, but i am no longer holding my breath lol. The frustrating thing is, if i had the funds, i could finish the bastid in a weekend!
Anyhow, went round Dars today as he has a nice space heater, and a vice. Both essentials in the job at hand!
Before..

After..

I am so peed off that i cant crack on with the car, i couldnt be assed to get the tools out to put them on, so that little job can wait.
Thanks Stu, you leather clad tail gunner!

getting closer mate i have nearly finished my cars little freshen up as well
Get those shafts in, put all the fluids in and start it up:D
Thanks Stu, you leather clad tail gunner!
Im not a tail gunner, im a door gunner!!
Im not a tail gunner, im a door gunner!!
Not as far as im concerned, you definately shoot from the rear!
Times up Winters over!!
get it finished!
Due to a setback, the car wont be finished to spec for this season, but it WILL be track worthy for combe on the 21st. In which case..
Polycarbs are on hold, glass is going back in
New exhaust is on hold, so old manifold and system goes back on
Ill have to run on last seasons shonky tyres
I need to get a std windscreen rather than a heated jobbie.
Nothing will be painted (no major loss there)
No Diff :-(
Other than that, the brake lines still need to be done, but this can be completed relatively cheaply.
So today, I was up t'barn fixing the rear brakes on the SR, and Dar turned up to get cracking on it.
We fitted the 'zorst, fitted all the rear glass, bonnet, bumpers and tailgate, and all the remaining cage bars. All thats left is to sort the brake lines and get the engine started :-)

glad to hear its nearly done :thumb:
Great progress mate, like has been said who cares about a bit of paint, at worst how much is it gonna cost to have it blatted over in miami blue lol
Very productive day today!
First job was to finish fitting the driveshafts. Stubby one went in like a dream. Long one was a pain in the backside. When the hub nut was tightened up, it was locking the thing up solid! Dar had exactly the same problem with his, and he used Gary the Grinder to sort it out, so i took it back out and ground the sh1t out of it. Lovely and free now!
Once that was done, I could tighten up the struts and track rods tot he hub carrier, and track it up after setting the ride height properly. I used my state of the art tracking equipment which happens to be two long bits of wood, four bricks and my good eye. Set it to about 1 to 2 degrees toe in. PMSL
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00127-1.jpg
Once the car was tracked, i could fit me steering wheel properly. Dash looks much better now, and pretty much finished. The far left hand side wants neatening up, which ill do when i can get hold of some fomex from a client.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00130-1.jpg
Dar turned up in the afternoon and proceeded to fit the front windows and rubbers, and then bodged them to stay up using cable ties. If you crab hold of the glass and yank it down, it cracks open about an inch. Bloody perfect!!!!! He also had a bit of a polish here and there to see how well the paints going to come up. By all accounts, looks like its going to be nice and shiney
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00128-2.jpg
Next on the agenda was to fit my camera mount. If its going to blow up / fall to bits / roll over on its maiden voyage, i want to record it lol :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00135.jpg
Next up was a few grill brackets
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00133-2.jpg
Lastly was the job ive been dreading most. Starting it! Spent about 6 weeks trying to remove the old oil filter which i really should have done with the engine out,a nd also should have remembered my filter wrench which was at home. Much stabbage with a screwdriver and it was off. New one on, new oil in, Coolant topped up, fan fitted to the rad, and then held my breath...
Not a single drop of a fuel leak! No coolant to be seen! Lots of smoke from WD40 on the manifold, but didnt even fluff a plug! Uber chuffed!! I think she might need a shim adjusting as theres a wee clacketty noise on come down, as you can hear, but nothing eb=ven slightly serious :)
As it seems to be the norm at the moment, i have a little video. I didnt film the first start though, as i was on my own and had to rush about checking for leakage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/th_Running.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/?action=view¤t=Running.flv)
Anyhoo, all thats left to do is fit a windscreen, and fit the rear brake lines when they turn up, and rebuild the rear brakes! I also have to get one of my tyres repaired this week at some point.
2 weeks to combe!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00138.jpg
half dash is cool...
need some gauges in the old heater control holes now
Good stuff.
Pmsl at setting the tracking.
looks good lee, sorry about the screen mate, have you sorted one out yet?
Yeah, picking one up from Stu next week. CHeers Mike, no probs!
Nearly there now.
Spent all saturday rebuilding the rear brakes, fitting the windscreen, and making up the rear brake lines, as well as topping up the gearbox oil. Then i went over it with a rag and some polish to spruce it up a bit, and spent for fecking ever cleaning the wheels!! Its basically finished! All it needs is a small fitment to attach the rear line to the MS, and a bit of superglue to hold the rubber onto the inside of the door to cover up the sharp edges!
Again a big thanks to Dar who popped up for a while to help. Youve been invaluable on this project pal!
More pics will follow on monday, as i intend to get it out in the sunshine, and maybe give it a wee blat up the road!
