Righty, spent today undoing all my previous work! Managed to get the engine out and stripped down to a point where I ws able to work out what went wrong, and also the cars ready to recieve the new lump (which is already lined up thanks to Mr Marshall).

I decided the first job should be to get all the ancillarys off the engine, and remove the rocker cover (which I can fit to the new engine to save arsing about doing another breather mod)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00150.jpg

Next job was to remove the head (which was a ballache, I really have NO room down the offside of the engine. I rekon it'll be an engine out job to do cambelt changes in the future, although the rate i go through engines may save me this problem anyway!) I was very relieved to find the head was untouched from the violence that went on below it!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00151.jpg

First look at the bottom end. That pistons a bit twisted LMAO

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00152.jpg

With the head off, i didnt need to jack the car up too high to drag it out, so i split the bottom end from the gearbox and started having a poke about.

Holy cow, thats a big ass hole!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00153.jpg

In fact, so big I could get my hand in and push the piston out of the bore! Here was the first clue, half a rod still atached to the gudgeon! Poor thing took a beating, no where near as bad as I was expecting, but seeing as the little end it pretty much locked solid onto the gudgeon pin (robably bent) its a write off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00154.jpg

This was the only debris I found. A testament to ARP methinks! The rest of the rod and shells / bearings etc must have fecked off through the fist sized hole LOL

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00155.jpg

This is a cool pic. Shows that the crank is pretty much undamaged so that eliminates the bearing disintegrating, also shows a big hole something punched into the sump baffles

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00156.jpg

Another pic of the baffle. Not too bad, ill reuse it on the new engine I rekon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/WIP/DSC00157.jpg

SO there we have it. Closer inspection of what I have left of the conrod, I can see evidence of a crack where the separation started, so basically, catastrophic rod failiure! Bless it, i did give the bastid a caning over the last few years!

Not how I was expecting to see the car so soon after finishing it! New engine will be chucked in in a few weeks when I can be ****d.

Itll probably do its job better now lol. Dont worry, im going to chop out the bad bits. Obviously it depends on wether the new engine I get has one or not, but Id rather run with a damaged one than none at all!

After RJ asked for a hand fitting his engine, i thought it would be extremely embarrasing not having mine re-fitted before his. lol

Many thanks Mr Dave for the new lump. Despite it looking like its been at the bottom of the sea for a few years, he assures me its a good runner, so i got busy fitting a new cambelt and rollers, swapping my oil cooler over, and the rocker cover (turned out the one on the car had the breather bod done anyway, but it was worth doing in case it didnt.)

Next job was mating it with the gearbox (uber tricky on your own lol)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00187.jpg

Then the labourious task of raising the car up using my almost useless engine hoist

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00186.jpg

Then the usual badgering about trying to line up mounting holes. Takes a while when you've not got a helper, but after stripping a load of skin of my hands, and a little bit of swearage, got it all bolted up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00188.jpg

Takes next to no time plumbing everything back in when everythings to hand lol. All thats left are the shafts and the bodies (need an inlet gasket). SHould have it running when i go back up t'barn friday or saturday.

Finally, Im back where I was before the engine went bang. OK, a bit down on power, but plenty to have fun with, and hopefully a bit more low end grunt.

Todays jobs were to fit my new strut brace, the rod bolts, and my 1.8 sump from the old engine, as well as fit the manifold and top up the fluids. One of the inlet tappets was loud as feck for 15 or so minutes. Got a bit worried, but eventually it shut up, so alls looking good.

Roll on Llandow!

whats the deal with the 1.8 sump ?

Lee
30-06-07, 10:51 PM
It doesnt have the big ass sensor (which isnt used) in the side of it, so no welding is required to plug the gap. its also lighter lol

Plus you can use the rubber gaskets which are ten times better than the cork ones.

Following on from the reshell of my track car last winter, Ive decided to use one thread for all my projects to keep it all neat, so i have merged my reshell thread with this one.

So anyway, story so far.

My track car has suffered badly this year, two catastrophic engine failiures in as many visits to Combe, but I did get a good go in it at Llandow, so im not hugely upset. Engine goodies will follow this winter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/08092007071.jpg

My SR has also had an eventful winter. The amount of parts ive changed on this blighter is mind boggling. I finally got it roughly where I wanted it and it got drowned in the floods earlier in the year. It now needs a full set of wheel bearings, and the gearbox is definately on the way out, the fronts starting to rot and the MOT runs out next month.

Hayley and myself decided we were going to sell it and buy a nice minty mint 1.2, but I just couldnt let it go (look at it ffs, how often do breeze blue SR's in this condition come up?) SO Ive decided to put it next to the green one in the barn, and slowly do the last bits of work it needs (front panel mainly), slap a valver in it, and give it the handmedowns from the green one as I uprate it. The plan is to have a spare track car / road car for shows, but its going to be done slowly as to not suck any funds from the track car.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/PICT0218.jpg

So Hayley needed a car. This little gem popped up in the forsale section so I called Jon, who owned it straight away, had a chat about how lame the brakes are, was convinced that he was an honest bloke, and paypalled a deposit. One week later, we went up to meet him, confirmed he is very honest, and also a top bloke!

Dragged it back from Stafford, and we're well pleased with it, it just needs a tiny bit of cosmetic work and some other bits and bobs.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/IMG_1449.jpg

Any work I do on all 3 cars will now be posted in this thread :thumb:

Lee
09-09-07, 10:05 PM
So.. we shall kick off with the lil 1.2 as i want to get it on t'road ASAP.

No sooner that we had the thing parked in the barn, Hayles weilded a screwdriver and wanted to learn how to gut an interior lol. So the first job was to rip out all the innards!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00220.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00221.jpg

The only part of a GSI interior I had up there was a set of rear cards kindly donated by Mr Christian (aka the Stick). So i showed her how to fit them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00222.jpg

The rest of the innards are currently residing in the SR, so were dragging it up from Newbury tomorrow to join its siblings, and we'll swap the rest over. Ive a feeling the SR will become a shed for a little while lol

Then I was informed she wanted the rubber mouldings removed, and the pinstripe gone. Out came the 'wheel of fudge'

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00223.jpg

Yet more proof this is the ONLY way to get rid of sticky mess left by mouldings. we had one side cleaned up in about 15 mins! Then me batterys on me drill went flat, so we decided to call it a day.

Tomorrow will involve 35mm springs, a cheeky set of MO's, 256mm brakes and some interior refitting :)

Im after some GTE bumpers and skirts cheap, preferably in the south as well :)

Take my time over a strong engine build over the winter. If money allows it, a 230bhp target, and a SCCR with either a gripper or ATB diff. :)

If money doesnt allow it, another cheap XE to spread all over a circuit somewhere lol

Its alarmingly clean. The only rust it has is surface, small bit on the bottom of one of the quarters, and a few crusty bits in the bay. Nothing a bit o rust stopper and paint wont sort! Other than that, just the odd dent youd expect from a car this age not being sold for eleventy million pounds!

Loaded the SR up and dragged it to bristol, the first job was a repeat of yesterday.. Gut the interior. Hayleys a quick learner and started the refit with ease. Looks well at home in there too!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC002232.jpg

Next on the list was to get it up on axle stands, remove the immensly tiny wheels, and rip out the suspension and brakes. Hayley then brandished a paintbrush and a tin of underseal, and gave the inner arches a good coating ( I plan to completely underseal it at some point but there wasnt enough time today) Also dropped the rear beam and slipped in some cheeky -35mm springs I had knocking about.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC002242.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC002222.jpg

At this point we took a trip up to Dar's to borrow his spring compressors, and another cheeky pair of springs were fitted (cheers as always lover)

Next up was pop the SR up in the air and steal its brakes while it wasnt looking. Struts back on, brakes fitted and bled up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00226.jpg

I picked up some colour matched paint on the way over, so we rubbed down the boot slam panel which looked like it had a fair few concrete blocks dropped on it!

Before
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00227.jpg

After
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00228.jpg

Next up was a quick clean of the MO's and drop it on the floor. Then I wielded the fudge wheel again and got rid of the rest of the nasty goo left by the mouldings.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00230.jpg

I also debadged the back end and swapped the grab handle with the SR's as Stu (SR's previous owner) did a lovely job of spraying it up

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00231.jpg

I also painted up some of the crusty bits after treating them, and painted half the wing (no pics of this till ive flatted it back tomorrow)

All it needs now is some GTE bumpers and skirts, and hopefully Hayles will be happy! I think a cally steeringwheel may be on the cards soo as the current one is a lil bitdated, although very cool!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00232.jpg

Both bumpers are feckered, so it may as well have GTe items, especially as the bottom of the front panel is a little bit crusty. The height is perfect i rekon, and the standard shocks make for a lovely boaty ride so she's happy, as she hated how rough the SR was (although I loved it lol)

Coming along nicely Lee, will look smart with the GTE bumpers and as LLTN said, some clear indicators would look cool. Where'd you get the polycarbs from and can you tell me if they are a good fit as I'm after some? :thumb:

Lee
11-09-07, 06:55 PM
Good question Tom. Seeing as it gets asked a lot, and seeing as Dar has got so good at writing fitting guides for various track modifications, we decided to make a fitment guide for polycarbs lol

The set I bought came from Plastics4performance http://www.plastics4performance.co.uk

I cant recommend them enough, I mentioned my severe misting problem in wet conditions, and he suggested some coweled exhaust ports in the rear window. Ordered the full set which came to around 280 quid including front sliders, and they arrived in about 3 days!

Anyway, to the fitment.

As well as the windows, you will need some rubber to fit the front ones as they obviously wont fit the standard equipment.

We used http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/bbCMS/shopping.asp?intDepartmentId=4 ,

SWR149 - 5mtrs @ ?4.10 per mtr.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00234-2.jpg

We started by fitting the rear quarter and back windows, as the procedure is the same as fitting glass, and we wont insult your intelligence by describing how to do it. If you are at a loss, there will be various guides around the forum, just use the search!

The rear looks hardcore wit the exhaust ports lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00239.jpg

So, onto the fronts.

After stripping out all the glass, rubbers and window mechanisms, and removing the door mirrors, you need to grind off the two small metal tabs which the front quarter window sits on..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00232-1.jpg

Ensure you paint up the exposed metal, bearing in mind you will be able to see the inside edge once the windows are fitted, so either blow the whole length of the door the same colour, or use a colour matched paint. This is always assuming you give a sh1t, which I dont, so i just grabbed a random can of hammerite lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00233-1.jpg

The front panels are designed to be fitted in a different way to how we fit them, in which case, they need to be cut down. (if you are buying from another source, I suggest you take your time and test fit the panels beforehand). You will also need to remove the sliders to prevent damaging them, and also to remove the protective film once you've finished.

We cut 25mm from the bottom of the window, and 5mm from the front end.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00236.jpg

Next job is to cut the rubber to size. This picure is a bit misleading as we found you need to leave the shortest edge (front edge) without rubber otherwise you cannot refit the wing miirrors, and it makes fitment UBER fiddly.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00235.jpg

Now comes the fun bit, trying to fit them. The key here is patience, of which I have very little, so this job was given to Dar because a) he has teeny tiny fingers, b) he's done it before and c) he loves me.

We slid the panel up through the door as we have cut out all of mechanism hangers and stuff from the door itself. If you havent done this, you will have to ease it in through the top taking great care not to scratch the polycarb. Also, LEAVE THE PROTECTIVE FILM ON until you have finished as you will be manipulating it and nasty fingerprints will be smeared all over the place, and it also offers some protection from scratches.

Work your way around the panel as you would fitting a rear window, only this time back to front, pulling the rubber over the outside lip on the door. This is the part that needs the patience and small fingers!

And thats the job done. Remove the protective layers, refit the mirror and slider, and then marvel at how fecking light your door is, like I did!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00237.jpg

Once again, big thankyou to Dar. One step closer to whooping your ass :-)

Suppose I ought to sort some sort of engine out for it now!

Not to everyones taste I know, but seeing as they were hanging on the wall in the barn, I decided to fit the bumpers that were OE on the track car to the 1.2.

I know MK2 bumpers on a MK1 front end is a bit taboo (lol) but sod it, it looks better than the damaged bumpers that were on there and they can always be replaced at a later date.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC002312.jpg

I may even consider another taboo for this car.. and exhaust trim lol. Not a stoopid huge one, just a nice chrome cover to make it look a tad neater at the back.

Coing back to the meany greeny, ive been mulling over lots of engine options.

Buying a ready built monster XE was considered to save hassle (im soo bored of engine work now lol), but the problem with that is you never really know where its been, and i really don't want a hatrick of gut spillage next year.

I spent a day investigating the possibility of doing something different, aka a 2.2, but again, still lots to be developed on this engine, and id have to change my induction system which would run into ???'s

So, ive ended up deciding to do the only other alternative. Build another XE.

Dar called me today to inform me that my gasflowed cosscast head that was smacked by the errant piston on my first engine is easily repairable by one of his mates who happens to be a wizard with things like this, so thats the head sorted out in the next few weeks.

He also has a block and crank 'lying around' which ive bagsied. I plan to strip it down, have it dipped, re-honed and painted up, and then purchasing ONE piston to replace the mashed one from engine 1 (engines now being referred to in numbers as im losing track of the cast iron carnage that has been 2007 season lol)

New rings on the pistons and mated to some steel rods (no brainer LOL)

Do something to the crank, but not sure what yet as I need to speak to various people on the best option here

I have my set of Q420 cams sat in the barn doing nothing. I may reuse, but im probably going to sell them on or PX them for a set of Q450's for a bit more punch.

A lightened flywheel is definately a must, mated to a paddle clutch of sme description.

My target is 230bhp. Any more is a waste on a FWD track nova IMO.

I think done intelligently, I can do this build for under a grand, hopefully leaving enough winter budget to stretch to a nice SCCR cluster and the ever elusive LSD that ive been promising myself for 2 years!

EDIT: ps, a small block was not considered even for a nanosecond. Just wanted to make that clear lol

The bloke i spoke to at P4P said they were only slightly weaker than polycarb and yet were alot more scratch resistent ! As my will be a road/race these will prob be better for me but ploy is prob best for a track beast such as yours ! :thumb:

Looks good lee, the 1.2 looks pretty sorted, although as already mentioned I don't think the mk2 front bumper suits it, (I learnt that from my yellow one!) otherwise spot on for a first car!

And glad to hear your getting the engine sorted, get back on track and annoying the 'faster' cars!

Had a lot of questions recently on what exactly my plans are for the track car this winter. well after various discussions with people (mainly Chris Tunnicliffe, whome no matter how hard I tried, wont sell me his engine lol lol lol), i discussed a budget with my business partner after all the work weve been doing this summer, so basically, I have a plan.

Parts order from QED..

One piece hi flow valves
uprated valve springs
Q450 cams
1 pocketed piston (to add to the 3 i still have from my old lump)
A set of solid lifters
A set of steel Rods.

Block I have aquired from Dar will be sent off for a refurb, as well as the crank I got from him as well.

My gasflowed cosscast head which got nailed by the flailing piston can be repaired by a specialist. Basically he can weld the dent up, and then grind and polish it back to new, so ill be using that head.

Coupled to my yellow injectors, Im hoping that setup will give me scope for up to 250bhp, but im aiming for around 230ish with a better torque figure.

Im also hoping to couple that to an SCCR if I can stretch the budget that far. If something comes up second hand on egay ill probably nab it, the only problem with that is you cant choose your ratios.

So basically, thats it, and if I can make it last a season (lol) ill probably dry sump it next winter as well.

Spent today ripping the engine out of the car. My phones playing up though so couldnt get any pics of hole number 2 .

Progress made last weekend on a very nasty rainy sunday in the ghetto otherwise known as Walsall lol

Dan and I met up stupid early for a sunday and headed up to chris' where we were greeted with a nice cup of char and some unbelievably dreamy toast! Then the job in hand was attacked in earnest. Operation rip chris' nova to shreads, and then fight like schoolchildren over the resultant massive parts list which ended up all over the drive! The relentless peeing rain spured myself and Chris to put together the most complicated gazeebo in the known universe, only for it to stop raining once it was erected! Typical.

Anyway, here are some nice pics, or sad pics depending on how you look at it. For me its a bit of both, and its a shame the car didnt get a good innings, but needs must and all that!

About to commence the murder..

Bits bits.... must steal more bits.. steal steal plunder steal etc..

To show its discust, the nova sat on Chris while it still had a bit of life in its veins..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00280.jpg

Talking of life in its veins, its final act before complete flatline was to haemorrhage its life blood out the back all over the drive. Probably at least 6 or so litres of it while we were busy at the front lol

Anyhoo, Dan came away with an SCCR box, a FG bonnet and tailgate, and some big boxes of random stuff, and I came away with a quick rack and the piece de resistance...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/DSC00284.jpg

Quick question... anyone seen a pully wheel like this on an XE? its smaller than normal, so a normal cam cover wont fit (or at least its a tad sloppy), and I have to get a smaller fan belt as well. Finished the engine install today with a bit of mincing involvng the Manifold (had to grind a small amount from one side of the flange to clear the thermostat housing)

Also slapped some stickers on the bonnet as im pretty certain ill never be assed to paint it lol

Went to crank it but the battery's flatter than flat thing from flat land.

Just need to wait for Dar to pull his finger out of his ass and sort these hubs out now lol

Next week, its time to get down and dirty with the Wide Arch :)

Nice, nearly ready-ish.
How similar is the new engine compared to your old one?
Going be running it on the same map?

Adam, nope, Chris will be emailing me his map when he can be assed :) He paid a lot to have it done so I may as well use it lol Not overly similar TBH, my old engine was a revver, and this is more of a torque monster. Last one revved to 7750 and made 190 - 200bhp, this one only goes to 6900 would you believe it, and it makes 220 ish bhp! Christ knows what it'll do when i stick the yellow injectors on and take it to jamsport for a tweek! Estimates are around 235 ish :) W00t! Ive driven chris' car with this engine and i instantly fell in love, thats why i made sure I was always at the top of the list if he came to sell up :)

Peester.. Cable ties are the future ;)

Olly, yup i had the stubbys from new and never realy felt the need to change them. I know they make a small difference to the torque/ power split, but no plans to change em at the moment.

Adam
20-12-07, 11:31 PM
Cool, its making a lot of power at pretty low revs then (compared to most tuned NA engines)
Should go very well.

wow i missed this lee, bet you can't wait to get it out on track (with 4 fully functioning rods)

Lee
10-04-08, 07:43 PM
Well its been a while since Ive had a tinker, so seeing as i have a few days off from the grind, i thought id best prep the car for Combe in a week and a half :)

First job was to work out why me wipers stopped working. I unbolted the wiper mechanism from the SR and plugged it into the track car, and the moror worked fine, so plan two was switch on the wipers, and tw@t the motor with a spanner lol Low and behold, it worked, so out came the WD40 and i left them running for a while. Work fine now, but it may need a new motor if it happens again.

Second job was to fix the fuel leak that occured just as i put it away from the RR day. Turned out the jubilee clip holding the return pipe onto the line had broken. Nice easy fix :)

Then some new goodies. Me new steering wheel and 4 point harnesses on the drivers seat :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/10042008021.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/10042008024.jpg

Then i bogged off down the tyre shop to fit my part worn Dunlops i got through the other day.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/10042008023.jpg

They were cheap as chips, have plenty of life left in them BUT.. theyre 195/55/15's, so i was risking it for a biscuit.

As per my luck recently, they just touch the springs on the inside on all 4 wheels, so im going to need some 1mm spacers. Hopefully that wont give me issues on the outside, as im fecking close to the arch as it is!

Other than that, it appears im ready earlier than I have ever been for combe! W00t :)

scott.parker
10-04-08, 08:05 PM
LOL good going, tyres look interesting mate, so if your all done on yours do you Fancie popping over to Dar's and finishing mine for me and then getting through the mot? lol lol

Lee
10-04-08, 08:42 PM
lol, wish i could but ive got no spare time again now till friday when we go up to the circuit!

Where the feck can you get 1mm spacers from? I might be tempted just to let the fecking springs wear a groove in the tyre walls lol

Adam

Good to see the car ready and sorted :)

trackdaynova

wouldn't bother running spacers for the sake of a millimetre - just run them as they are lol

you can get 3mm's from halfords, universal alloy jobbies, which is what i run - but by the sounds of it, 3mm might be too much?

looking good, i like the look of the tyres, looking forward to coombe too pal

Well bugger me, i was wondering when you were going to show yourself :) Nice to see you on the forum mate! I have been watching your thread on MIG, im surprised you havent gone looking for that bloke yet lol

No, totally agree, im not running it with the tyres rubbing like that, despite it only being a slight touch. Although i deliberately put 23 psi in each tyre to test them out, ill be dropping the rears to 18 and the fronts to 22 before i go on track. At the same time, 1mm spacers are looking like a mare to source, and theres no way im using washers lol.

Chris, yeah, still got em :) I might have to do some serious tyre swapping again on Friday, ive been looking at some pics of mine on track and in hard corners the back wheel;s going a fair bit into the arch, so I dont think spacers are going to cut it.

Righty, its been ages since I had a proper mince up t'barn, so seeing as the track car actually stayed in one pice on Saturday, I thought it was time the poor little 1.2 had some attention, as ive been driving it into the ground since the Van got KO'ed.

First job was to sort the exhaust. The backbox fell off it a few weeks back, so I bodged an old GTe item onto it, which blew like a MOFO. Then a hole opened up in the downpipe, which i've been under the car 3 times with a bandage trying to quieten down. Enough was enough!

There happens to be a nice full stainless 2" GSi system on the SR. So i got it all off, and first job was to spruce up the fannymould.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23042008040.jpg

Ahhh, stainless. Now the car will rot before the exhaust ever does lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23042008039.jpg

Of course, both the manifold gaskets disintegrated on removal, so i was about to get a lift into town, when i remembered THIS had been sitting in me cupboard for years!

W0000t
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23042008041.jpg

It sounds bloody lovely now, and I can get an extra 10mph on the motorway lol

I also did an oil change. Seriously, youve never seen oil as fooked as this before! You know how bad the old oil is when the engine quietens down after you put the new stuff in lol

Next phase will come on Friday, where ive decided the ludicrously low suspension kit on the SR needs to be installed, as its pretty much brand new, and also the MO's are coming off in favour of some 14 inch Cav steelies on 185/60 rubber :) Feel like something a bit different, and the MO's scrub like feck with this suspension on! Its going to look evil LOL

Cant decide what colour to paint the steels though. Im half considering white, ive got about 3 tonnnes of white hammerite in the garage!

Ive also decided it needs some GTe bumpers, the MK 2 stuff just doesnt look right on it, and I CBA to do a MK2 conversion on it just yet. So anyone got any lying around in good nick? :)

Really wasnt happy with how the Nova handled on the low suspension. Plus there were serious arch clearence issues lol. I decided to do a spring swap so the 40mm kit was on the decent gas shockers (what I should have done from the start anyway). Put the MO's back on, and also fitted the GTe bumpers I aquired from Vauxal (long standing MSN mate) for a song! Cheers matey!

Looks lovely now imo. Perfect for a first car for Hayles, and finally she's started lessons again lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/08052008059.jpg

Backbox still sits funny, but that cant be fixed without a heat up and some pipe bending lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/08052008060.jpg

Just this minute I looked at the 1.2 tuning guide in Articles. Serems the best bet is GSi exhaust (done), 1.4 SR cam with dizzy setup, 1.3 inlet and a twin choke carb. The old Blue SR has a 1.4SR cam, 1.3 inlet and a Weber 32/34. Hell, I might as well, it'll make it easier to drive on hilly motorways lol

I will also hopefully be picking up a new tow vehicle / workhorse / mobile tent in the next day or two :)

18-05-08, 07:02 PM
Huge mincing today :) Sun was out, so I thought id tidy the Fronty up a bit.

Firstly I wanted to have the wheels off and inspect teh brakes. Good job I decided to do this as the nuts were UUUBBEEERRR tight. After bending my wheel wrench using a 3 meter pole, I took it up to my mechanic who nearly broke his 1 inch breaker bar on them!! Got back home, and as I suspected, the discs are fubarred and the pads are nearly completely gone, so new stuff is on the shopping list for next month. Rear shoes are in quite good nick though so thats good!

WHile the wheels were off, I decided to give them a brush of Hammerite. I knew it wasnt going to look special at all, but they look awful at the mo, so anything would be an improvement. I plan to get some new rims for it in the future anyway.

Before (this one was in ther best condition lol)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/18052008082.jpg

After
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/18052008084.jpg

Despite the poor finish, they are a 100% improvement!

Then while the brush was wet I painted up the kickboards as they were rusty as feck! Then gave it a polish :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/18052008085.jpg

After a thorough check over, all it needs is front brakes and it looks like the oil pressure sensor is leaking. Not bad at all!! I also plan to remove the viscous fan and put an elecy one with a thermostat on to unleash a couple of ponies :)

Its been a while, so I thought I ought to dust off this thread and do a little updating.

Over the last few days I decided some serious Barn Pimping was in order. I had no room in there due to rubbish and scrap, Dans car being in the middle of the floor, and myself generally not putting things away because ive had no motivation recently because of money troubles.

So firstly the barn pimpage was going to have to cost the grand sum of nothing, using only stuff we had lying around.

Firstly we had to plug the massive hole that was above the gates which was currently plugged by a big piece of Tarp! We had just enough clear corregated shizzle to do the job, so we completed the job a few weeks back.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008186.jpg

So, to this weekends pimpage.

Firstly I had to clear the place up because it was utterly shockingly untidy lol. Dan arrived on Friday afternoon to clear his side of it up, bless him. He got his shell onto 4 wheels, and we shunted it into the corner with most of his stuff inside it. The amount of space this created was amazing!

Meanwhile I had filled 6 black bags of rubbish up! I then took it to the dump before coming back and loading the volvo up with my two holey engine blocks and a load of tailgates and bonnets no one wanted, and took em to the scrappers (bar chris who texted me THAT evening after an old block he could use for experimenting with new engine mounts. The law of the sod at its best!)

So I had a tidy barn, next thing to do was to plug some gaps. My gates sit proud of the main structure as we originally just bolted the new wodden doors to the old metal ones. This left a massive draughty gap..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008189.jpg

Some old rubber car mats, a knife and a stapler later...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008188.jpg

I need some draught excluders for the bottom of the gates and it should stay reasonably bearable during the winter!

Next up was Electrics. Since ive been using the barn, I only had an extension lead running from the next partition lol. So I ran a new cable from the consumer unit into a JB, and wired up some new socketry. I also added a board to hang some tools on

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/22092008177.jpg

Whilst rooting around in the back of the Transit I found a brand new NUVO amplifier, (which is the size of a single gang socket) and some speakers. Had to put that lot up as well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/22092008179.jpg

Whilst raiding the transit i found some standard light pendants and a load of flex, so i wired up 4 lights on 2 seperate circuits. Added some low energy 15w bulbs (surprisingly bright).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008185.jpg

I then built a new bench out of 2x2 (we have shed loads of the stuff and some board I found on the neighbours scrap pile (result).

Added a strip light above it to give plenty of illumination, and bolted down my Vice which I found in a skip last year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008183.jpg

Really pleased how it turned out, it feels like a proper workspace now!

I even found time to have a mince with the Nova. I thought Id better do something about Dars favorite part of my car lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008180.jpg

Took it off and sprayed it up white

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008182.jpg

I also gave the pit bike a clean LOL

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Bottlethroddy/23092008187.jpg

Loads of room in there now :)
