Saloon and Van

finaly got round to starting my engine conversions on my two babies today, got a weekend to my self so the plan is to get both blocks in and then i can do bits and bobs to them as and when i have time (carnt remeber the last time i had a free weekend).

anyway managed to get the valver out of the saloon today and bolted into the gte, plan for tomorrow is to change the fly wheel on the turbo and get that bolted into the saloon.

yep i use the saloon everyday normaly but its getting replaced by the gte soon live at moorends and work near the outlet so it mainly goes up and down the m18 the saloon was in total vauxhall this month

well mythy the engine has been in the garage since i was talking about it i had every intention of putting it in the gte but think the saloon will suit the turbo better plus i was having a bad day when i made the decision as the carbs had gone out of ballance and peed me off lol


any way finaly got all the bolts from the dealer of fingures crossed the turbo may start this weekend

right then been busy today, tidying up a bit of wiring and making the slam panel removable as my rad has seen better days and was pissing water every were, since ive put it back together ive decided to change the fan to give a bit more room than the standard one, want a front mounted one.

The saloon looks as good as ever, I think that and shaun's yellow saloon are by far the best around atm.

The GTE looks a bit tatty but still going to be a good track car, why is it a gsi now though!?

enthusiasm regained it wasnt the box phew!! checked everything today and turns out one of the otter cvs was no good changed now and the car drives so just a few finishing touches to get done and sort out why the engine is missing, any ideas as to what it could be would be apperciated, im thinking plugs and leeds as the ones on it are just old ones out of the garage which i put in to get it running

hi steve ye but its all tucked up in the garage for winter now

the engine is running fine now the missing was just plugs and leads new ones sorted the problems and can i just say jesus it is quick, ive built up my disc rear beam only bought the beam and hubs off bert in may 05, so that will be getting fitted over the winter, ive sorted the cooling pronlems with a cool running stat and a new front mounted fan wired on a switch so i can switch it on to give a bit better cooling, im also planning on poly bushing it, and getting a few bits re-sprayed including the clio vented bonnett, have just had a new slam panel delivered so i make a new centre for the removable slam panel, i want a 3in down pipe and i might get an uprated clutch but other than that its ready to go, will be off road over winter and will definatly be at a few shows next season oh i also need to send the boost switch to regal to be repaired.

i have striped the gte and sold off the parts now, didnt see the need for 2 novas that i would only use on weekends and i wanted to get the saloon out of the eliments and into the garage plus the neighbours were moaning that my garden was starting to look like a scrap yard as i had an accident damaged mazda 323 on my front lawn until the insurance company finaly admited the accident wasnt my fault and payed me out so i dint fancy replacing it with the gte, got over 2k for the parts though so thats freed up some cast to spend on the saloon lol

well havent updated this for almost a year but that is because im lazy lol

well rear beam still isnt fitted and in truth wont be on this year lol

but at long last the engine is running spot on again

ive been having problems with it missing underload for a bit now and turns out it wa the plugs and gap, put new plugs in it when i bought the lump but they were crap and badly gaped re gapped em today and the missing is gone, so gonna get some decent plugs and gap em up tomorrow.

big thanks to joff for pointing me to this at pv and to phil for coming over from york for a mince today.

so the loon is ready to hit billing, first show in four years for it and will more than likely be its first proper run. just like when it got xe'd 7 years ago

well chuffed its runnin and cant wait for the next four weeks to pass, i have a couple of little things to sort but nothing major.

well a little update today decided to fit my rear discs well did by the beam in may 05 so 5 years to fit is taking lazyness to another level even for me mind the rear braided lines were bought in april 03 when the fronts needed replacin for the mot lol

got the rear beam out had to slightly mod it with the grinder to fit the hubs as i bought abs ones when should have bought none abs ah well lol

had to bodge the short cable as a make do tho as was let down by a local motorfactors so tied 3 nots in it to shorten it all works fine but will get replace soon

the duratec is a stonking engine pritty much the xe of its generation it will fit but would be a nightmare custom mounts and shafts plus similar power can be got from an xe or the later ecotec and all the fitings eg mounts and shafts are readily availabe

fecking cars, been away at my dads giving him a hand with some building work got about 5 miles from clifton moor turn off on the a64 and suddenly lost power and started missing so limped home at 40 mph

got home checked the obvious plugs timing etc the went **** must be head gasket or worse so cracked the compresion tester out no compresion on 1 and 2.

so set to stripping it down bricking myself incase it was something more serious than the head gasket

also noticed the engine mount was about fecked so got a new one out the garage and filled it with tiger seal ready for when i rebuild the engine

so just need to order new head bolts and an inlet gasket and i can rebuild it have all the other gaskets and belts as spares in the garage

also decided on the wheels for my new shell, wanted something similar to these for years but finding something in a useable offset in this style is a nightmare these will be 7x17 with a 45mm ofset so will be fine as there the same as my old multi spokes and they were fine

bit of both mate the loon needs alot of work to get it back to were i would be happy with it and i dont have time at present so the engine box brakes and wheels from the loon will be swaped to the van so i have something to use the when i have a little more time i intend to re carb the loon and get it all tidied up with new rear quarters scutle pannel rear panel front panel and wings oh and a drivers door but thats because i want the body work back to perfect like when you drove into the back of it lol, the pannels will tale some tracking down and i dont want to rush the loon so the van is just a toy, will get a quick freshen up and then get put on the road hopefully intime for billing but no guarentees.

i have already started colecting parts for the loon but 1 gen gm new front wing a good bonnet and boot lid means theres alot still to go lol

Bay will definately be painted at weekend so the main assemble can start, we can get the engine in and whatever else and while you fester on the engine bay next week i can prep the outer but im not rushing it to get it in colour we will put some effort in as its not a quick tidyup job but to be fair it doesnt need much work on the shell

Seems the shell was a little worse than first thought but it's about sorted now needed half nearside sill replacing and front section of rear arch

Massive thanks to Dave for his welding today felt like a spare part while he worked but I can't weld and I did a good job of ordering tea lol

Dave I've also told Heather to cook the bacon for longer next time lol

you changed your mind every 2 mins on what engine you were gonna fit lol


well no photos from today but the engine is out of the loon the inner cvs are fecked so need 2 new ones for the van also the gearbox oil looked a bit dogey (brown and had metal bits in it but was still running fine) so rather than put a box in that could be on its last legs im gonna fit my spare, so cleaned it and gave it a spray, also gonna give the block a coat of hamerite before it goes in the van. After removing the let and having 2 empty bays i noticed the mount on the van is lower than the loon so looks like they have used a standard nova front mount so now need one of those before i can bolt the let into its new home but think there is one in the back of the garage

cheers to dave again he fitted the rack and colum today and took the piss out of me lol

and thanks to tony who got me 2 bags full of new bolts to help build it up also put a set of standard springs on the van to make it easier to move and stop it looking tooo much like a scraper lol

tomorrow will be going to have a mince round daves series 2

Well not much done today bolted up the turbo changed the rocker cover for painting and made sure the strut brace still fits with the dodgy front engine mount just need a bettery Leed from a BMW to run to the boot and to fit the tank and pump and it should run good times

well a little progress today went to graemes on sunday and took a load of interior parts off the hatch hes scrapping so having a bit of time spare after finishing the gardening today i set about converting the gte loom to mk2 and fitting my new dash just need a light switch and cowling grey centre consol and grey under dash shelves and i have everything i need for the interior

Not done much still collecting parts got an exhaust centre section to pick up off Damo and my rear bench off spud so just need a back box rear dampers and a couple of bits of interior plastic (dash shelf supports dash shelves and centre console) and I'll have all the bits to get it built and finished.
