/\Hence why i plan on keeping the boost/power levels sensible. Even standard let boost is hardly going to be slow....
And should be quicker than even a fully mapped 200hp XE on Jenveys etc.....

Todays "progress"
XE coilpack v Ecotec coilpack
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/79ed2563.jpg

Fitted temporarily
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/9ecbaa40.jpg

No go, so thats where the nova progress ended lol
The reason i think it wont run is because in the GoTech software you have to set the trigger tooth, which is basically the number of the tooth the crank sensor looks at when the engine is at TDC. I got Iain to count his because hes got a bare xe in his garage, and he came back with 20. So the crank sensor points to the 20th tooth away from the gap on the trigger wheel.
The GoTech i have can only use teeth 9-16 to trigger from... (a small block 1.6/1.8 is tooth13)
So thats left me a bit stuck.....

ANYWAY, cracked on with the astra
Front bumper took off, plenty of space there for a IC, no Adam dont even think about it lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/8727510b.jpg

Old headlamps are chrome, and were misty, compared to new GSi smoked items
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/643e7d30.jpg

Add one of these into the mix
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/6b4270c0.jpg

Handily the ballast boxes fit perfectly onto the lower headlamp bracket bolt lol Nicely hidden behind the bumper

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Mk4%20Astra/049df1d6.jpg

New headlamps in and bumper refitted

Easily mate, its not like ive got to weld/paint the bay...
Would just need move the rad a bit, and maybe cut the crossmember for a IC.....

Its just i really dont want just refit the standard ecu/inlet etc back on the xe now, i want to change something lol

Southie-No chance mate!! The standard xe was better than even the 130hp small block in everyway imaginable :thumb:

why not get the car to jamsport to get it up and running and map, have you seen how quick olly hewitt used to lap and dar they are n/a! i will struggle to match there times and i have 200bhp more

Get a LET in the nova....or the astra!

Adam
27-03-10, 07:50 PM
Im waiting for a email back off Broster.
This trigger tooth is an issue though, remember you saying how you knew quite a few people that couldnt get a xe/let running on gotech...? lol

Depends what kind of track you are on....?
On a track with a few straights you should be quicker than both!

Olly and Dar are/were both very quick round track, maybe just down to knowing the track and speed they could carry through the corners....?

Adam
27-03-10, 07:52 PM
Get a LET in the nova....or the astra!
I want reasons why i shouldnt fit a LET! lol lol

The astra really does need a ZLet in, 135hp is toss in a car the size of a mk4.

Rick Draper
27-03-10, 08:01 PM
I know where there is a Z20LET for sale that can be seen running in a astra coupe.

I want reasons why i shouldnt fit a LET! lol lol.

Easy to, good power, will prob work out cheaper than the tbs, chav valves sound cool lol good on fuel when driving easy/off boost..

What more do you need? Look about, offer cash and you can pick them up cheap.. I did.

Get a LET in the nova and the astra!

corrected it for you lol

The Simps
28-03-10, 12:31 AM
LETs are awesome but you really need management to get it to work right on track. You certainly dont need anymore than 250-300bhp.

I think Castle Combe is well suited to XE novas. Its quite a small twisty circuit. Something like donington where you carry a lot of top end speed would be quicker in a LET nova imo.

Can you not just bin the gotech and use megasquirt or spend the money on emerald or similar. Surely you can sell the Gotech?

Imo - n/a for the nova, turbo for the astra daily.

Rick Draper
28-03-10, 02:01 AM
TBH i would flog the gotech whatever. Everything i have seen about it on various vauxhall forums has been about it been temperamental.

Adam

scott.parker

Yeah but you can get a let and fit with the cooler done right, then just mod/improve as you go etc..

Adam
31-03-10, 07:03 PM
I know exactly what i want, spec wise, its just being me, i wait for the right bits to come for sale at the right price!!! lol Hardest bit for me will be cutting/modding the crossmember, might look for a suitable IC to minimise how much cutting i need, even if it means the IC sticking out from the bumper slightly......

It crossed my mind rip the xe to bits and turn that into a let, but i spose selling the xe is going to get me some cash back.....

scott.parker

Humm could/would turboing the XE be viable, cheaper? Well,i basically need LET pistons, turbo, inlet/top hat and an exhaust cam, drill/tap block for oil return.... Thats pretty much it i think lol

But pistons, the loom, amal valve, ecu, afm etc for a LET aint cheap to buy seperate....

John, sound mate, may well take you up on that offer!! I can chuck the xe back on std inlet etc to get it driveable.

Benn, spot on, cheers! How did you go about moving your rad forward?? Just redrill the holes that the "legs" sit in???

I sat cooler in the cut out, then pulled the rad for ward till it touched and marked the legs and drilled the holes. Made sure it was more centred too so the ic pipes can run down the sides.

My ic sits perfectly in the mouth of a GSI bumper too.

Loads of pics in my wip as always.

Internal shifter is working mint!!! Im just going to have a play with the linkage though because i want to make the stick sit further "forward" in neutral. Ive currently got more "throw" upwards, than down, if you get me.... Ive got all 5 gears though :)

Astra now has 6k hid's fitted

And nova is now sorted and spot on again, re-aligned the linkage and all gears now "feel" mint! So pleased with the internal linkage :)
Sadly i wont be able to test it out at Combe this Saturday, bit gutted about that because the weather forecast is looking spot on too!

As for LET, im going to get the bodies and go-tech on Ebay and see what they go for, and then go from there really....

All on and sorted, fits amazingly well. Credit to John Ashley exhausts tbh! Ive never had a bad fitting Ashley exhaust.

Bit of an update on the nova. Mot ran out on the 31st May, really couldnt be arsed put it through one lol lol

Then realising how close PV etc is, and this sunday im doing RetroMania with a local club, i decided just ring up my local place and put it in for one.

Dropped it down there at 4pm today, and it passed first time, FLOL lol lol
Awesome stuff!!

MOT tester was a sound guy tbh, but he gave me advisories for "No rear seats/belts", "Non standard race suspension", and "Exhaust system non standard & noisy"

WTF lol lol

But he passed it, so im sound with that. He even did me a little printout off the brake balance machine, with the cars weight etc on. It weighs 883kg, with 1/3 tank of fuel, and the mot tester sitting in it... So must be around the 800 mark with nobody in it, not bad i thought!!!!!
He was amazed how light it was, even with the 2.0 16v in!

So yeah, its on the road for another 12month

Yeah thats what he said. Everything he put on was to cover himself for if/when i get pulled lol
BEcause he also put "at time of test" at the end of each advisory.

He was a newly qualified tester too, i swear he like double checked everything!!!!! lol
I had to laugh at him "testing the suspension", two bounces and settle. Oh no, you cant press it down..... lol lol lol

So its just staying as it is for now, will be deciding where to go with things after PV/Billing/TV Live etc.

Dont be gay! LET's are cheap as they come. My current corsa LET is all good, i once paid only a couple of hundred quid more for a LET engine than i did for my current corsa and it had half the bits missing!

When they go wrong its no more than a LET costs unless the turbo has a 100 a day habbit.

Well, what have i been up to,Lol.
Nothing much car related tbh, hence lack of posts.

Astras done another head gasket so thats currently in pieces, and the other day i actually started the nova, and cleaned it!!!
Sat for 4 months and it starts first turn of the key

Definently off the road for the next few months now, but will be back where it belongs, on track, next year!
Bit of a task ive given myself is sort out the gear linkage, basically remake a new internal shifter so i can actually get 4th gear properly. Thinking corsa shifter. :)

Cav/Astra shifter has the wrong end on for a nova linkage,so needs further modding.

Any shifter can be made to fit tbh!

Paul-Nah mate, maybe a bit of a task for over winter as ive had these Mo's about 2 years now lol

Just stick with your cav setup and change the clamp bit on the linkage for a corsa item, your lose the **** nova bush and be able to replace both bushs on the linkage (the little plastic cups) cheaply.

Adam
16-10-10, 09:38 PM
My current setup is to55, it needs starting again and re-welding in a straighter position.

Corsa linkage? How does it differ to a nova one?

Its just the bit that has the internal bit for the clamp thing you need off a corsa linkage, It has a cup bush that is replaceable via vaux for about £5, does fit the standard nova linkage once you have popped off the rubbish nova bush.

Well well well, i forgot i had this thread lol

Novas been sat since, well erm, whenever it was, last summer. About August 2010 time i think.
Ive not done anything on it.

I still want to sort the linkage before its on the road again, but its not looking good tbh. Its going cost the best part of £700-£800 get it back on the road (tax, insurance, two new front tyres). The front brakes are fcuked from it standing. Its not been run for approx 3-4months.

And its all down to money :(
Ive pretty much got £50 left out my wages each month, if im lucky. Where i live, bills, my missus, holidays and the astra pretty much eat all my money. And theres no way in the near future im going be able save enough spare cash to put the nova on the road.

So thats pretty much that atm. :(
Going to have a drive down to Combe Spring day in April to see what im missing, and hope money picks up over the next few months.

Possibly coming soon to a breaking thread near you...

I would miss hooning around in it on warm, sunny days. Definently would.

But as you said, its just money sitting in my parents drive. Last year i paid £500 insurance and £230 tax, and drove it about 5 times, total of about 600mile.
That cost i do not miss.

Anyways, im off work this week, planning on a trip to the scrappy as im after some astra bits, also might rip the shifter out of a cav/astra too. So I can sort the shifter out sometime.

Going charge the batt up, stick some fuel in, get some air in the tyres, and see if it'll start too.
Shame i cant drive it, because it really needs it!

MK999

being stuck for cash after working out you can afford something like running a track car truly fcuking sucks.
The cash I'd saved up for a roll cage in change/pound coins in a tin and my christmas money from various people (I asked them not to buy stuff in order to get my cage) went on rent on the 1st of january and hasn't been seen since, and my funding for uni has been cut by about 2.2k for this year, so I'm down what it would have cost me to finish the nova and about another £6-800 too :(

Hope you manage to get some cash into it and back out for summer, as your car, all the way from the white smallblock, has been a bit of an inspiration for doing a decent track car on a budget tbh :)

Edd
14-02-11, 04:25 PM
If you can keep it and not break it i would tbh

cause you'll only cost your self more when you have to buy all the parts again when building another lol

Jesus christ, cant believe the last post in this thread was nearly a year ago! :(
Well, where am i at. After a to** 2011, moving into another house with a decent garage, set to get the nova into there, and then having to move again within 4months of living there
Now living somewhere with a decent drive but no garage, so the novas going nowhere atm :(

Anyhow, i actually found the nova today and opened it (for the first time in about 13months...lol)
Expected under the bonnet to be in a worse state, dont get me wrong, it aint great, but everything is still where it should be. Some rust/mould/crap in places, but nothing that aint cleanable.
Checked oil etc, all seems well.
