Shells aren't selling well at the moment though as you know eh?

Can't even give them away lol

Rick Draper

Yours would sell ok. Well depends if it came with your luck attached to it!

I would buy it tbh if you did me a good deal on it, fitted a xe and dropped it off with me fpmsl.

Proper deja vu today, Andy and Rickardo round at half 8 again this morning to help refit the gearbox again.

Fitted this this time so hopefully might have a bit more luck with this one. Should do for the fecking money it cost

Nah, didn't bother. Never intend taking the engine out again so it's gone in as it came.

auzzy-b
07-11-09, 11:10 PM
Cool, will it not be affected? i was going to do the same but thought i would have to get it all balanced together..
O and could someone do something about the triple posts my internets being reeeeally wierd!!lol

Lee H
07-11-09, 11:16 PM
Not really. Flywheel is balanced after being machined as are clutches so they are balanced, just not altogether as one assembly.

Benn
07-11-09, 11:28 PM
Have you been able to drive it yet?

Lee H
07-11-09, 11:32 PM
No, tax has run out and it's been absolutely hammering it down all day. Need to bed the clutch in a bit as well before I just nail it unfortunately.

Benn
07-11-09, 11:34 PM
Ah ok, hope its sorted the prob. Bedding the clutch in? Never heard of that before...

what the supplier told me to do and don't fancy taking any risks and having the gearbox off again or buying another clutch for that matter.

Fitted mates xe back in his car as well today, god the F20 is light after lumping this thing round.

Benn

Oh right, best to do then.

The shed had assumed it's favourite position up on axle stands again today for a job I've been putting off for a while.

When I built it I fitted a pattern oil pump and am sure that is behind my continually reducing oil pressure. I found a genuine GM pump in my spares and have stripped and measured it and it's within tolerances so I decided to fit that. Also my sump is leaking so assume it has a crack in it so sourced another one of them for doing at the same time.

Stripped it all down today and needed a bit of persuasion with some pliers to get the cambelt backing plate past the chassis leg but the crappy autopumps pump is off now. Waiting for a crankshaft oil seal and cambelt to come in at Vauxhall to build it back up.

Took the big end caps off as well to see if the bearings were damaged and all are fine with the normal light surface scratching that cannot be felt. That has cheered me up somewhat.

Should see the chunk we took out of the paint on the chassis leg getting the cambelt backing plate off. Touch up required.

You won't get to see the full effect until i've bedded the clutch in a bit this time.

Cheers for your help again today even if you couldn't undo the E20 crank bolt :gay:

Feel i'm learning a lesson now. Buy cheap, buy twice. Seems that way with the clutches and oil pumps recently.

Very unlikely as really not my thing. I get very bored looking at cars at shows. I'd say there is far more chance of it being used on the drag strip at York tbh.

Have to say after seeing this for the first time a few months ago it really is mint and is up there with the best i've seen. Im not suprised you don't take it out much, mine never gets driven when its been raining. Especially now i've stuck everthing in Rich's old shell, the light blue shows every mark.

Small boring update.

Well, its been another full year and the Nova hasn't left the comfort of the garage even for an MOT in 2010.

I have decided I need to actually try and use the thing this year seen as its costing me in insurance for nothing. In order to do that I want to make sure I am happy with everything reliability wise.

I have just bought a Z20LET oil pump and modified pick up pipe that i'm hoping to get on with fitting at weekend with some assistance from Mr Dixon. I am not convinced with the pattern part fitted previously or the high mileage GM item fitted currently so this should ensure things are right on the oil pressure front. Should have done it right in the first place.

I fitted the Helix paddle clutch after the rolling road disaster so that should hopefully cure any lingering clutch issues (hopefully it will calm down a bit after bedding in as its juddery as hell) Another job I should have done right first time. I can see a pattern emerging.......

bazil
03-01-11, 10:38 PM
Bloody hell, I'd be itching to use this motor if I had it.

Hope you get it out and reliable, nothing worse than oil pump problems, killed my friends LET aswell, 9k to build the car and it's done less than 300 miles in 5 years.

Benn
03-01-11, 10:39 PM
You didn't use the car this year at all? Not good dude, you need the love again and getting it driving right and feeling happy driving it will do that.

I got a Zlet oil pump after reading some stuff you've written.

And it's a learning curve...

That isn't an incentive for you to sabotage it in order to get first dibs on stuff though lol

It came to the end of the drive for its agreed value photos for the insurance and thats as far as it gets. I have been distracted with the MR2 last year.

I have wasted over £500 on oil pumps and clutches that haven't worked right in the last 18 months alone

No, really don't enjoy static shows and would rather do drag racing or watch drag racing.

Did plan to take it to York raceway but judging by the further deterioration of the return road last year I might not bother.

I've taken your advise, gonna go up rated clutch but not paddle.

Lee H
03-01-11, 10:55 PM
Looking back I think I would have been alright with the Helix organic clutch, I think the problem was the billet flywheel being so shiny and perfectly machined was causing the clutch to slip against it. I dulled it up with some wet and dry this time before refitting the clutch.

This way everyone will get to see how well its been built/finished. which will possibly give you a much better chance of selling for a good price once words got round. To be honest I don't really. Civic is nicer to drive, handles better and will be faster than the Nova next month and I've got the MR2 as old fashioned basic turbo fun which I'm not as fussy about how I drive it or where I leave it.

Could be a very sad weekend. Meant to be receiving a deposit on the engine so then its game over for the old girl after nearly 11 years of ownership.

However, the car has covered approximately 1000 miles in all the time i've been with my missus (7 years) so it hardly seems worth keeping it anymore.

Considering selling the Civic as well and getting an Evo 8 or 9 but still undecided on that plan as I live in the carjacking capital of the North-West.

I imagine a mk1.5 MR2 will fill every void the Nova ever left, and then some. Plus a Type-R Civic, and whatever else he has.
Maybe Lee likes the look.of it enough to keep it hanging around a little longer though. lol

How far down the street have you moved, Lee? It's shocking that's its longest journey in almost a decade! lol

[EDIT] It is an awesome Nova though. I love the pic of it on the rollers.

Why not use it and enjoy it yourself?

I have another car that is quicker and puts the power down much better and my daily handles miles better than the Nova so no real need for it. Was good when I was early 20's but now I'm early 30's....

Yeah the mk1.5 is epic when its working properly. Rev 3 engine now which feels rapid but had some overheating issues when I took it to York a couple of weeks ago so just trying to fix that now. Just replaced radiator and thermostat but its being a pig to bleed, major airlock in the heater matrix.

Have only moved two doors down. Main reason I keep the car is its pretty nice to look at and I don't have to sell it. If it does sell I quite fancy a supercharged EP3 next for weekend fun.

Get it flogged or if all else fails may be time to break there's some money sat there.

And it's not like its the short term love loss like I have it's been 3 years look at the money mark beeson got out of his

Lee H
09-06-13, 07:55 PM
I tried breaking it and had loads of interest in everything except the engine. However the engine is worth most so really needed that to go first rather than being stuck with it.

I think Mark managed to sell his engine first as never saw it up for sale.

Lee H
11-06-13, 08:10 AM
Got someone interested at the moment at £5k but I will be reducing the spec slightly at that, would need £6k to leave it as it is.

Might sound a lot of money for an old Nova but been keeping an eye on recent selling prices for Gsi's and discussed it with a few mates on here and that is the conclusion we came to.

I have had the pleasure of going out in this car and I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat, I like everyone else am gutted it doesn't get out and about but understand where Lee is coming from when he says he has no desire to use it. I know it's his favourite car as his other two brave the elements all year round whilst this stays dry in the garage, and I also know how much thought and deliberation will go into the decision weather to part with it or not and I'd imagine that it's not about the first person to wave six grand under his nose that will get the pleasure of owning it, I think it's more about preserving the car and it receiving the money no object care that its had for the last ten years or so. This car has also enlightened me that despite us all being interested in modified cars that we do not all enjoy the same aspects of building and restoring them, I personally hate cleaning them and skinning my knuckles trying to complete a project, whilst I enjoy the driving and attention of nostalgic people who comment, Lee is the other end of the spectrum, as anyone who knows him will vouch, every weekend without fail he is lying in a pool of oil or getting snowed on with his socket set in hand. All that I know is who ever does make the grade is going to have one of the best Gsi's in the country to enjoy when ever they see fit

scott.parker
11-06-13, 09:57 AM
Lee, if it was me with that car, personally I wouldn't sell it, I was sorn it on axel stands in the garage under a cover and sit on it for a few more years... Then try it out again, see if you still love it, and go from there, I would hate to let go of such a good car, it's the only reason it was easy to let go of my track car, I didn't use it or want to keep it any longer, but it took almost 3 year's to get to the point of selling.

I do hope you do what's right for you mate.

Sad day today, deposit received on the car.

Looks like I'm going to be without a Nova for the first time since I passed my test. Have had this car 12 years now so its going to be strange opening the garage and it not being there.

Hopefully it will get out and about for more people to see with its new owner though!!

Booked for its first MOT in almost 5 years at 7 am tomorrow morning. Be the longest journey for almost 4 years with a 4 mile round trip to the station.

Had it out of the garage and ran it up to temp, found a small fuel leak from the new pump so sorted that. Checked all lights and all seems good to go. Can't believe the running was such a simple problem.

Gave the inside a quick clean.

Sorry but that's up to the new owner to reveal. Sure everyone will know soon enough.

Impossible to refit interior now without major work. Car has seat rails welded in front and old mounts cut out. Also all the rear seat mounts are gone as well. Was much comfier with interior tbh.

The way to look at it is you've done what you wanted, you've owned a well respected nova, and hopefully you had fun doing it and driving it when you did.
Your obviously past the nova thing now so its time it goes.

This is going to sound harsh but I think there is either something wrong with you or the car if you think a CTR is more fun than a Nova turbo.

I was on track last sunday and I was lashing them all day long in my XE!

23-08-13, 09:05 PM

rob89
05-09-13, 08:29 PM
Yeah it really is a good example.... Don't really have much plans for it. Just a general tidy up (new jubilee clips, bolts etc),black hoses may fit the Gsi boot vinyl. Looking into an alloy radiator and possibly a hybrid turbo (think the oil seals are going a little bit) but apart from that it's great I really have an OCD with it...before I even collected it I bought a carcoon, paint for the garage and way to much on polish waxes etc but the car will get what it needs and more to keep it tip top! Yeah baz was looking forward to meeting you and scorge etc but this time home has been mad (probably spent the majority cleaning the nova). Roll on next year and I will get it out and about :)

shaunyboy84,
yeah im over the moon with it cheers

Lee,
its taking over my life!!! lol will give you a call soon....the savings account will be put on hold for a bit :) This OCD is mad now. Think I will need to hire an accountant to deal with the Nova!!

Phil,
I'm still unsure I think because the body is so clean it suits any tail lights.

Kev,
Yeah I am glad I paid that extra bit for a very good example. The spec etc I could not build it anywhere near the money I paid for it plus there is not many shells like this left! (im back in Dubai now so will get in touch soon....just busy just now with a rig down)

Cheers!

Iv got full red rears forsale mate ;)

An excellent purchase fella, I should have bought it a while ago before committing to building my own. Personally I'd stick with the stock rear lights as they suit it perfectly. It needs no other changes whatsoever. ;)

Edit.... If you get the time please bring it to billing next year so we can all have a look round it!

Nick.

Scorge,

sent you a pm.... can never have too many options ;)

Nick,

Yeah its brilliant so glad I went ahead with it nearly bought it a few years back. Then spoke to Lee again and it was a case of if I don't buy it I will probably kick myself for not buying it. It really is a good example and I love the way the paint is nice and fresh and swirl free :) I don't plan on changing much....just little bits here and there nothing major as it doesn't need it. I think its more the case that I just want to buy things for it lol . I do plan on making a few shows next year, more just to get to know people and faces etc. I have been on here since 2006 and as you can see my post count isn't much :) . I know of most peoples cars on here so would be good to go down and actually see them. Would like to see your old cars....the finish to them looks brilliant and always wanted to see Keith's.

Cheers!

Need more updates Rob :)

Hey Kev....updates will come soon enough not that it really needs much doing. Also need to have a look at it when I'm home. Just before I tucked it away I took it out for one last run, gave it some but when it was getting up the revs the engine management light was coming on and it was lumpy for say 2 seconds then fine....the air/fuel shows that it was running abit lean so unsure if this is a common thing or not?

shopping list so far is :
- carbon interior trim
- black hoses for engine bay
- smaller back box

the next thing is....ideally I would like to buy a hybrid turbo but I'm kind of lost in this area as there seems to be to much variety so just trying to find out what manifolds + turbos others are using first. I am not looking for a powergain/ chasing figures etc. so far I am swinging towards the gt28rs but will do abit of research first. Tried phoning some places but as I am out of the country at the moment they don't seem to be picking up the phone ( must be showing up as international caller and thinking I am calling to help claim back their PPI lol )

cheers!
