View Full Version : Nova Turbo progress
Thought it was about time I started a thread as the car should be back with me soon. Some of you may know my car, if not this is what it used to look like.

Took it off the road about 3 years ago and decided to strip it out and cage it and then things just snowballed as they do.

I'd had the car stitch welded and the welds smoothed in with filler and there were a couple of bubbles appearing so I decided to investigate and found that the car was rusting away under this. Nothing for it but to got the whole hog and bought new inner wings and turrets from Vauxhall and got the car trailered up to Chris Astley for fitting. At the same time I had the F28 mount fitted, seat rails fitted for the buckets and the rear of the car welded up to. Also had the front crossmember made flat to allow me to fit the intercooler behind the ctock GSi front bumper as I didn't like it on show. Some pics from the major urgery below.

Car came back and went to PMS in Birmingham for full repaint with new doors, wings and bonnet and all the underside cleaned and tidied up. It is still there at the moment but hoping to have it back next month to start on the building it back up with the new parts i've been collecting including WON nitrous kit. Will get more pics up on its return.

Had quite a few scabs of surface rust so it was sanded right back and then primed and re undersealed. Bodyshop did it as its an **** of a job with no ramp or spit to turn the car over.
Looks an very good job indeed, thats how i want my floor.

Looking good lee!
Small update, sorry no pics.
Car now has the doors back on and will be collected in a couple of weeks after polishing.
Meanwhile just got a box of black powdercoated engine bay parts back (Thanks Rick), these include the Bailey header tank and the Fearless strut brace so might not be to everyones taste but i've really gone off all the polished/chrome stuff.
Also got some Cav Cesaro wheels with new Toyo R888's on two of them for using for drag racing.
Just spoke to the bodyshop and finally its having its proper polish and all the new vinyl fitted to the door pillars this week and will be ready for collection at weekend.
Shame I decided to split the F28 to fit a quaife this week as thats going to need sorting before I can start on the car.

You will be very happy if the paint is as good as Andys :)
Unfortunately never managed to get it collected this weekend as the guy with the low loader is on holiday for a couple of weeks so it won't be back till the 25th.
Picture of the new wheels and tyres for the drag strip. Unsure what colour to get them done? Also not sure whether the Toyo R888's are going to foul the coilovers as they have really chunky sidewalls.

Well I got the car back last Saturday and forgot to take any pictures as I wanted to start putting it together.
In the four days I have spent working on it since I got it back the car is pretty much ready for the road except sorting out the wiring inside and going collecting the bumpers and spoiler. Didn't expect to build the car back up that quickly but never mind!!
So much for progress pics, will get some completed pics up asap.

Cracking on Lee. Nice one.
I wouldnt say the strut braces are ruined but, if you did want to get the powder coat off its a proper chore.
Will get some pics up of the brace fitted, looks far better IMO.
Target is to get it on the road and through an MOT ready for a days drag racing at York on 14th October.
Can't believe how easy it was to throw it all back together.

I guess you must have done lots of preparation to all the parts going back on.
Its the cleaning & renovating of miscellanious parts that takes the most time tbh
Coming along nicely Lee, with regards to the wheel colour Id have a look at the colour I did Andy bishops wheels in, really suits the black gsi's imo, may not be for you tho everyones different, I've just done a set of cesaros in that colour too heres what they look like in case you havent seen them, hope this helps your decision! nick.

Cheers Keith, wish i'd done it to the standard of your build but i've had it too long and already wasted too much money on it.
Running Gaz coilovers on the front and Avo rear shocks with some springs from Coilsprings.
Used to run Avo's but they bottomed out running it as low as it is now.

sorry for the highjack lol
Latest update on this is i've bought a Wizards of NOS nitrous kit with minimax controller (cheers Mr Tunicliffe), going to keep and use this kit after selling the one I bought last year. Feel the car is better equipped for putting the power down this time with the diff and equal length shaft setup on it now.
Engine may be having to come apart though if I decide to fit steel rods for piece of mind as the standard ones will probably be on borrowed time.
Also needing to get a wideband sensor at this stage I think to keep an eye on fuelling, can see this snowballing into another massive spend on the bloody thing.
Should go well on the 1/4 with the nitrous fitted. :)
Thats the plan, think thats what i'm mainly building the car for now so 12 seconds 1/4's is my aim and then maybe use a bit more nitrous if possible.
More up to date pics.

No, gear linkage won't work so need to try and sort it out when I can be bothered with it.
PV seems to have inspired me a bit.
Finally I have sorted the gear linkage after modifiying a rose jointed one Rick Draper put together for me. I can now get the 6 forward gears and reverse every time. MOT time after my holiday I reckon!!
Also fitted a billet flywheel and new clutch, F28 is a total **** to get back in without removing the engine.
Sweet.
Going Trax/Billing in it???
Don't do Billing and don't think i'll be doing the show thing with it to be honest, will be hammering it up the drag strip in York instead I think.
looks really really nice.are you going to york this sunday?

I found out the exact same thing when changing my clutch! lol
On the linkage, I had to "tap" my gear surround to get all 6 gears smoothly with a rose jointed linkage.

Its PPC £999 challenge on Saturday and i'm in that in the red shed so don't think i'll be doing Sunday too.

lol Box off, about 45 mins :) box back on, about 5 hours  and lots of swearing/not enough hands!!
Mine seems ok now but i'm using part of a quickshift kit so it doesn't have as much movement side to side. Couldn't get reverse at all with modified standard linkage.
The Simps
12-06-08, 11:29 PM
i either had to sacrifice 5th or 2nd on mine. I could get them but had to push the lever down to clear the gate, so i just tapped out the gate! lol
did you make a scuttle cover in the end?
Scuttle cover is on my to do list when I have got the car MOT'd and on the road.
andybishop
13-06-08, 10:25 AM
I had to sacrifice Reverse or 5th on mine.. thought it would be better having reverse, however as Simps says if you dip the lever down 5th works fine. Will be having a look into that.

Extend the length of the rod that attatch's clesest to the pinch bolt.
Sure you lot are setting up the rose joints to the correct angles? i spent about 45mins on myne, and its spot on! all gears with no problems and i have not had to chop any thing!
Goow work Lee, when I was talking to you at PV you seemed pretty stumped regarding the linkage situation!
The Simps
13-06-08, 08:11 PM
Chop a bit off the side of the stick or remove the rubber sliders fitted to either side of the stick tunnel
We pulled out the rubber strip on the drivers side, tapped it out a litte then refitted the rubber strip. Has been great since! We spent ages adjusting the threaded rod but ended up putting back to the length of a standard one and tapping out as said.
I suppose the differences also come with the fact everyone welds the f28 mount in slightly different places.
Had this problem last week. You need to extend your top bar of the linkage, if poss. Or as said it maybe grinding out on the box casing.
The Simps
13-06-08, 08:42 PM
Or as said it maybe grinding out on the box casing.
:wtf:
although think mine might be catching on the gearbox.
Assuming Andy is running a similer R/J'd linkage to me, the nut under the rose-joint on the right (with your knees to the bumper) needs to be ground down so it doesn't foul on the gearbox casing. This grinding out cause me not to be able to select reverse or 5th, and then eventually broke my linkage lol

I've not tried mine yet, but will be in a few weeks, i'll let you know how I get on!
The way i did myne was; Jam the box into reverse, then connect the linkage up along with the selector fork, and put the gear stick into the reverse position and nip the gnurled part of the linkage up so everything is tight. Adjust the two rose joints at the bottom so they are at max throw in that direction thus leaving max swivel on the rose joints to select 5th and 6th in the opposite direction.
Then i moved every thing into neutral, undone the linkage, then did it back up again!. (gear stick will not need to move as far back and forth as it is short shifted).
The top two rose joints that adjust the throw, should not need to be adjusted as they are set to standard length!
Finally got my finger out and insured the thing. Got MOT booked on Tuesday now so going to have to check everything over this weekend as brakes still feel spongy.
Also on a quick spin up my street noticed i'm getting blue smoke under boost, hope it clears up and is just oil sat in the manifold from when the turbo failed originally.
Its due back in the bodyshop for finishing on the 18th October so its first proper trip is going to be about 100 miles, should have timed things a bit better really. Can see an epic breakdown looming already.

Good work Lee, take some snaps when your going down :)
Yeah back down to John in Birmingham for a few weeks. Got to clean the inch of dust off it first. Just hope this smoke clears up a bit when i've driven it properly.
Is it the original turbo?
Turbo is off Phil Sutton's old Corsa but I swapped the manifolds over as it had a cracked wastegate and the one that blew up didn't. Pretty sure all the oil in the manifold would have burnt off straight away though?
GT30?? or the std kkk?
Would of expected it to have burned off yeah :(
Standard KKK unfortunately. Planning to upgrade over winter maybe.

Maybe, but that would give nothing under boost as the pos pressure entering the ports would stop oil leaking from the stem seal :thumb:
Hence why stem seals leak when the engines under high vacuum

Trust me its to low. I flared the lower seam out on the chassis rail and ran the box higher up so i could run it low. Lee has no issues and he is on tie bar mounts off my old nova that are 20mm lower than standard, his box is nice and high as well.
I really do hope its not the rings as will have to fit steel rods then. Hope its not the turbo as will need a bigger one with a tubular manifold. Must be one of the two though so going to cost me again.
Tie bars are as Rick says, no issues as yet with the car running really low.
I actually think its both the turbo and the rings(hint hint) lol

lol Let me get it on the road before I take it off again to do more stuff.
My mate nailed it up the road a few times yesterday and it seems to be clearing a little. Lifters have shut up a bit too now and brakes are actually doing something. I was too much of a girl to drive it myself lol

PMSL andy said ste gave it a good caining lol , and you said you had never drivin it that hard before lol ,
I haven't since I rebuilt it. Only drove it up and down the road a couple of times.
Cage is coming back out tomorrow after the MOT and going to be powdercoated while the car is back in the bodyshop. Not looking forward to removing it though!!

I think I may upgrade my front mounts, only my rear is uprated at the moment. I'd say the weight/sag in the rubber is causing it to run low.
Still drives well though lol.

IMHO thats about 10mm lower than where you want it to be.
Lee was saying with his car on the floor he can easily get his hand between the gearbox and the tie bar and his is urba low!

Although keiths might sit a little lower surely its better just to run larger lower blocks on the tie bars so that his driveshafts stay at a better angle?

IMHO no as then you can and probably will encounter issues with the cross member flexing.

This car now has a MOT and is starting to be liked by the owner!
Good stuff
Bring it down the m6 Lee lol
Will try and get some pictures of how mine sits Keith to compare.
As Rick says MOT was passed yesterday. Car has also been tracked as the new tie bars had made it toe in loads, guys didn't know how i'd even managed to drive it there.
Car was a pain in the **** at both places as it was too low for the ramps and involved blocks of wood etc to get it on.
Smoke seems to have cleared up too now. Hard to tell how it feels to drive really as it was raining yesterday and it just spins the wheels up like mad. All in all fairly happy with it though.
Ad - It will be going down the M6 to Birmingham on Saturday morning (if it gets that far)

Very very nice.

I'm not one for showing cars off though, it is going to get hammered up York dragway a lot next year hopefully instead. Can't face sitting in all the traffic at PV with those seats and no tunes lol

Awsome car mate.
Luv the colour:)
What I ment Craig was people have said on here that people should try and find alternative wheels for novas and be more original. Also people have commented saying a gsi spec nova on alessios is not everyones taste. Personally I think its a winning combination, maybe it was the way I worded the original statement. I hope this makes it clearer

No, still having loads of electrical problems so got someone looking at it next weekend.
Its the Midilite 280mm kit, no spacers needed :thumb:
:( Shame its/your not going to Billing.
Where did you get the brake kit from?
Love the brakes and light, make the rear end work well together..
Swapped the brake kit and some wheels for my spare LET but you can get them from Rally Design, about £670 though!!
I'm not decided on the lights yet, going to leave them a bit and see if they grow on me.
£670???????????????/ Christ!
Yeah best way if to leave them and take pics or get a friend to drive it so you can see the over all affect the lights back.
Nice, those lights look better than clears.
Liking how the car sits in that side on shot.
Red lenses would look even better though IMO!
Or even just standard euro lenses (Ok they are now over done to fook, but they look well)

Have you checked the earthpoints between the seats, which I believe are for the central locking and electric windows?
Have you checked the earthpoints between the seats, which I believe are for the central locking and electric windows?
Even unplugged the electic window/central locking loom from the fuse box to rule that out completely. However the alarm is still wired into the window loom I suppose so may be causing a problem. I have relocated that earth to the bolt for the bottom of the dash as my electric window loom doesn't go under the seats anymore.
might start getting into detailing now :gay:

lot of patients i think is the key here lee but am sure you will sort it dude
have you heard anything from tv regarding a feature on your gsi yet?
and have fun holding that f28 dude i dont envy you at all lol
Massive thanks goes to Rickardo and Andy017 for their help today, so lucky to have mates like that.
Clutch is now swapped for the Helix one, pedal seems much better, firmer and bites right near the floor. Couldn't really test drive it as the roads are wet and it would just spin rather than slip the clutch. F28 is a big, heavy, awkward *******!!
Doubt TV would feature it now they have featured Andy Bishops, too similar. Not really interested in a feature anyway to be fair.
Aye F28 is certainly not light lol
Love this car its just perfect

When I had to change the clutch on my nova we tried to get the f28 out with engine in place and it just kept fouling at the back near the lower arm mounting point. Was most frustrating! With a little twisting and swearing got there in the end and got very lucky lining it all back up again.
Any recent pics Lee? Not seen you in ages...

Was there any sign of a fluid leak?
No fluid leaks at all. Friction plate has crossed my mind but thought once it was clamped tight by the cover plate that was it?
Hmm have you got any pics of it at all prior to refitting?
No, just got on with it to be honest. Everything was thoroughly cleaned and dried though. Cover plate was brand new still in sealed bag etc.

slips when it first comes on boost for a second or so. Still running Amal valve so get the initial boost spike/overboost.

Coz they look crap, sound crap, and are driven by men on a midlife crisis!
Also Research shows, that your nova will eat them for breakfast!
And, bed the fooking clutch in? They aint designed for 300bhp, so bed it in gentley!
Clutches should never need bedding in lol
I used to work at a Clutch and Gearbox specialist centre and fitted hundreds of clutches to everything from daily cars to high spec RS Turbos/Subaru's etc.We test drove them and NEVER did our boss say "Just go and bed that clutch in" FLOL
The flywheels got sanded up every fit or skimmed if they were full of heatspots.
A few things it could be,the clutch sent is wrong or your friction plate is worn down to the limit, the clutch fork is sticking maybe?
