Ian Vaux part number 90144360 (a few £ only) will allow you to screw a filter into the pump without the sandwich plate.

Ian, I have a few fittings that are suitable for your oil pump.

Nice one guys, thats much appreciated. Tom I'll speak to you about that when you come for the gearbox :thumb:

At least this way I can at least get the engine running without having to wait till I have the funds to sort the cooler out.

Thanks again

Cheers Olly!

Well got back from VBOA saturday night, had really good time and nice to meet loads of new people, Dan, Scott Parker, Simps, Ade, Benn, Craig Green, Vaughn, Paul & his mate with the saab mk2 astra, Novashed, John H to name a few! was great to meet you guys :thumb: and good to catch up with the people I've met before.

Anyways back to the project, and managed to pick up some goodies from the autojumble for less than a tenner! Bonus! :d

Well update time, although not much to show, had alot on recently so poor nova's been neglected!!

Painted up the bumpers in the nice sunshine we've had!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image124.jpg

Got a nice alloy bracket for the fuel pump and reg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image135.jpg

Said pump and reg loosely fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image132.jpg

Decided to mount it here, Oh and also got a length of 8mm braided fuel line
(Apologies for blurry pic!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image131.jpg

Shifter rod shortened, re-welded and painted up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image136.jpg

Fitted quick release pins on front bumper
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image133.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image134.jpg

Need to get the cooling system plumed up with the magic bag of random hose (Thankyou please for them Olz:thumb: ) Fuel system plumbed up and then look into getting some banjos fitted on the oil cooler line as I dont want to trust the jubilee clip approach after rebuilding the engine. & then I can get it running! Good times! I hope lol

Can I fit an oil filter without the oil cooled sandwich plate? just a thought as I could get it running without the cooler setup first... Will look into that

Thats all for now

nova sr gte gsi oil filter screw will fit. so someone may have one on a old engine on here for ya if vaux dealership is not close to you...

Bit more done...

Fuel line into the car...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image144.jpg

... Along the sill to the bulkhead
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image145.jpg

And into the bay
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image142.jpg

I'm waiting on delivery of some hose finishers and jubilee clips for the fuel line, and also an inline pressure gauge before I can complete the line to the carbs. And also need to get a rivet gun sorted to get the line P clipped in.

Really happy with the outcome.

Just to check, I have a carb fuel tank, is the feed the larger of the two pipes and the return the smaller??

Also had a look where I'm going to mount the footrest when I get the rivet gun  Also got my shifter finally bolted in, but had to make the hole in the tunnel bigger as it wasn't quite big enough
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image146.jpg

Rubber cover is the answer, as i found on way to PV, if you don't you get wet feet!

Needed to make some form of bracket up for the top support of the alternator as with the bike carbs manifold there is no way of connecting the original bracket. After some research I came up with a idea.

Ordered 2 M8 Male Rose joints, one R/H thread and the other L/H, and also a R/H - L/H threaded turnbuckle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image152.jpg

Then made up a bracket

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image150.jpg

And on the car
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image154.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image155.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image157.jpg

So to get tension on my belt all I have to do is slacken the lock nuts and turn the turnbuckle to expand or decrease, so no need for any pry bars etc! lol Looks alot smarter aswell I think

Also stripped my front polycarbs down and got a friend to polish them with his PC buffer thingy. They were bought 2nd hand and had alot of scratches and marks where sickers had been etc... They came out pretty well, still got some scratches on but, got rid of the finer ones and made them nice and shiney :thumb:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image159.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image160.jpg

Small update, picked up this from scottc1088 off here,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/15072009478.jpg

Oil Cooler with banjoed joints as opposed to the one I have with jubilee clips. So can now bolt this straight up without getting the bypass bolt as a temp measure :d

Also received a T Pull Cable for my external cutoff

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image162.jpg

And got rid of my old nova to the scrap yard in the sky :(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image161.jpg

After having the windows cleaned up I decided to have ago at fitting them using an idea I saw on a Tigra at VBOA.

Ordered a length of nylon
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image141.jpg

Got some M4 Cap head bolts and drilled holes along top of door to suit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image163.jpg

Marked up set lengths of nylon
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image164.jpg

Cut
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image165.jpg

Drilled
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image166.jpg

Then After trial fitting one I realised I needed to modify them slightly
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image167.jpg

Then Bolted the window in

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image172.jpg

and finished
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image174.jpg

Need to get another rubber before I can do the other side.

Just for reference heres a pic of how I bypassed the third outlet from the waterpump that went up to the standard inlet

Simps, sadly its not up running, I've got it at home now, and the garage has been made ship shape. All cleaned and painted up, made a work bench and put some racking up. Although whilst getting the car off the trailor the front wheel came off because there was no cv in and the car dropped on it. Luckily just missed the wing, but knackered the wheel bearing

Done a few small bits on the car, and bought an omex rev limiter off here, some cage padding and a starter switch pannel from autosport show and thats about it atm.

Been doing alot of head scratching over the bias pedal box as when it was all bolted up the brake pedal wouldn't return fully, there was about a 5mm gap before it even got to the brake light switch, but after taking it to bits I found the swing arm in the bias box was hitting the top of the hole in the firewall, so got to make the hole bigger in both the firewall and the pedal assembly in the car.

Other than that nothing else to report which is why I haven't posted as its not much of an update, and to be honest I haven't even had chance to get online much!

Cheers for keeping an eye out on the thread though, progress will be made soon!

Same thing happened to mine as I was pushing the car onto the trailor to leave for billing - most annoying. Lesson learnt tho!

What's this about the CV/hub? The wheel can come off even if it's bolted to the inner race part if no CV joint fitted?

Adam
27-01-10, 07:22 PM
Yes /\
The hub nut makes the hub tight to the steering knuckle. Without it the hub has "play" in the bearing

I've got a couple of spare CV's I use when moving cars about with no engines/shafts fitted, stops the wheels falling off Ian. Good to hear you still have the car and haven't given up. I've just completed a full engine build on mine due to the failed oil pump gear but have some bulkhead welding to do so it's not up and running just yet.

nova ian
13-02-10, 07:27 PM
Right, update time, yes i know, i have sh*t the bed!! lol

Got a few hours in on the nova today, and took a few snaps to show what else i've been upto making a nice new home for the car (as me & the missus have moved into our first house) and a nice place for me to work on it!

Car in the new garage, tidied it up, painted walls and floor and some racking
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0106.jpg

workbench at the back, just need to fasten my vice to it!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0108.jpg

Now for the todays work! Still having issues with this pedal box, am I the only one who can't get a bias box to fit and work correctly!? lol

Basically when the bias box was connected to the brake pedal bar in the car it didn't allow the pedal to return fully and so the brake pedal sat alot lower the throttle and clucth.

I thought I had found the problem because the swing arm in the bias box looked to be fouling the top of the hole through the firewall/bulkhead, so I enlarged the hole as so

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0091.jpg

and also on the pedal assembly in the car, here is the marked up before pic
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0090.jpg

and after I attacked it with the grinder and file
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0093.jpg

Bolted it all back up on the car and thought it would be problem solved, only it wasn't! typical!

The pedal return was alot better as it came back higher than before but still not to the correct position.

Brake pedal in correct position and NOT connected to the Bias box
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0101.jpg

Brake pedal position when connected to the Bias box
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0096.jpg

Anyone else had these problems when binning the servo and fitting a bias box??

I noticed where the brake pedal connects to the big bar that runs across the car that there is an adjustable clamp. Has anyone else had to adjust this to get the correct pedal posistion?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0105.jpg

I've read alot about the whole re drilling this clamps mounting point to get the correct pedal ratio and soften up the pedal a little more, so another thing I could do is redrill the hole slightly further back, but its abit of a guesstamated job!

Anyones input on this will be greatly appreciated as its doing my head in now!!

Cheers

Harvey
02-03-10, 09:04 AM
For my Astra mk2 I did have to setup my yoke after I fitted my pedal box, the part in your last picture that screws to the threaded bar. As you say it can be adjusted which alters your brake pedal position either lower or higher. So get adjusting and let us know if this resolves the issue.

nova ian
02-03-10, 09:44 AM
Cheers Harvey,

I don't know why I never thought about getting the pedal adjustment back here, but never mind, whats done is done, and to be fair, the amount the pedal was out I would have ran out of threads on the pedal! lol

Another small update is that my dizzy has been sent to H&H Ignitions for the advance curve to be altered and have the vacuum advance removed.

Taken from Facets website :

We recommend that you mount the fuel pump no more that 12 inches from the fuel supply (gas tank). All our Electronic fuel pumps will push fuel rather than pull fuel. Some pumps only have suction limit of 12 inches, therefore you should mount as close as possible to the tank.

you will struggle mate tbh with the current facet location the pump is metres away from the tank

Ive seen plenty of those pumps mounted in the engine bay without problems.
But yeah they do work best mounted right by the tank

Well I thought it was about time to bump my thread for a few bits and bobs I've done and acquired.

First off I sent my Mk2 Cav Dizzy setup off to H&H and had it Recon'd with the vacuum unit removed and the advance curve modified for the XE engine.

H&H Dizzy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0134.jpg

Striiped my bias box down and cleaned / repainted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0136.jpg

Also made a start on my dash pannels, I got this switch pannel from the autosport show, but wanted to put the switches on my own custom pannel as below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0137.jpg

I'm going to use the top sections of a mk2 dash. I've cut out the air vents and clock sections.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0139.jpg

This will then be panneled in with some carbon fibre. Got this from the 'carbon mods' website. (www.carbonmods.co.uk) Top notch service. Arrived the next day!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0135.jpg

Made up some templates for the dash and transfered onto the carbon, and cut out with a jr hacksaw

Then filed the edges up and made it fit nicely
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0187.jpg

Then fitted the switches from old pannel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0190.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0188.jpg

Also modified the dials binnacle to fit some more carbon fibre
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0182.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0191.jpg

Taken from Facets website :

We recommend that you mount the fuel pump no more that 12 inches from the fuel supply (gas tank). All our Electronic fuel pumps will push fuel rather than pull fuel. Some pumps only have suction limit of 12 inches, therefore you should mount as close as possible to the tank.

you will struggle mate tbh with the current facet location the pump is metres away from the tank

In regards to this info on the fuel pump I've had a think and decided that I am going to move the pump to behind the drivers seat so it is near to the tank. Then I'm going to mount my oil catch tank on the bracket under the bonnet.

Cheers for that info

Cracking update dude, love the digi dash and carbon goodies, all looks bang on..

Hows that speedo going to work? do you have to mount a censer on the wheel?

Nice to see some progress ian good update. As Scott said where are you going to get your speed signal from for the dash? I wl eventually try one of those dashes me thinks so it will be interesting to see how you get on with it.

Using the transducer from a 1.2i. It has a mech and elec take off...

Re this pic, surely you need water going in to the inlet as it then goes in to the heat (cooling) and thru to the stat and rad..?

Re this pic, surely you need water going in to the inlet as it then goes in to the heat (cooling) and thru to the stat and rad..?

Benn, I spoke to quite a few people about this, and alot of race cars don't run the inlet manifold water pipe. I'll be honest and say I can't remember exactly what it was for, but like I say have been assured it will be fine having it blanked off.

In regards to the sensor for the speedo, I have decided that I'm going to drill and tap the hub for the magnet to be screwed in, and then the pickup will be bolted through one of the holes on the bearing carrier where the brake disc back shield used to be. Obviously I need to enlarge this hole. I will post up some pics when I've done it.

I have done a few more bits on the car over the weekend, but I didn't take any pictures. I'll get out and take some snaps to update the thread this week.

Got the driveshafts built up and fitted, relocated fuel pump, mounted oil catch tank on the bracket where the fuel pump used to live, got drivers side door handle opening in using a T-pull cable, modified new exhaust manifold as it fouled the thermostat housing and then got it fitted. As said pics to follow :thumb:

I would of used Loctite 270 for the studs as it's a stronger hold, not sure if the 242 will hold the studs ok with all the tightening and loosening of the wheels nuts.

It's so close to being started I can smell it. It was nice to pop over and see the Nova in the flesh yesterday. As I said if you need a hand with anything just give me a bell.

Nice update mate, when you fitting the DTM's? lol

Also good call on fuel filter, and where you get the oil catch tank from, one thing about them, Ive often thought they need to fitted in the bay lower then the outlet on the rocker cover so the oil will not flow back? am i right, or does it get forced into the tank?

hhhmmm you might be right on catch tank, but I don't think its as a problem as its only there to stop the oil dripping on the floor. The tank is what I bought off novashed off here when he broke his car :thumb:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0244.jpg

and the results = 3 pedals all where they should be!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0242.jpg

Got my other hub assembly back with a new bearing in, so built it back up and fitted the speedo pickup for the digital dash

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0245.jpg

Now, next up before I can get this hub on the car and it back on its wheels I need a new outer CV as the threads on it are fooked

However I'm not sure what CV I need... I have what I think are the M-Tech conversion shafts. The hub has 33 splines. After a bit of a search on here I found that I need a "big block CV" but couldn't find any explaination on what these are exactly??

A standard nova one or one from an astra/cav/cally???

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get the CV ASAP, so I can get the car back on all four's again

Cheers

Thanks Benn

The pedal problem was that when I connected everything up to my bias box, the actual pedal was sat as if it was halfway pressed down and unable to fully return to the correct posistion and or activate the brake light switch, I don't know why I have had such an issue with it as I'm sure loads of others have run the bias boxes without all the faff! but hey ho its sorted now :d

Bit more of an update. Decided to tackle the repair on my GTE rear bumper.

It was cracked in the corner as shown

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0328.jpg

Started off by washing it down and getting it cleaned up, then cut some repair mesh to shape for underneath and fibre glassed it in place

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0327.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0329.jpg

and sanded roughly to shape

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0330.jpg

then filled and sanded again

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0331.jpg

followed by a coat of primer to see how the finish was

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0332.jpg

Happy with that I gave the whole bumper a coat of Upol Plastic Adhesion Promoter

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0333.jpg

Then some perfection plastic texture on the repaired area

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0334.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0335.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0337.jpg

And finally a good coat of satin black

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0336.jpg

Well pleased with the final outcome

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0338.jpg

Received a package from novarally (Thanks Colin:) ) Which was a gear linkage clamp, fuel neck breather and rad top hose. So got on with some jobs...

Dropped the fuel tank out to get the breather hose fitted

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0374.jpg

And fastened back in for good with some fresh braided fuel line as what was there was quite badly frayed

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0376.jpg

While the back end was up in the air I got my freshly painted rear anti roll bar in

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0377.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0379.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0380.jpg

And also Stud to Nut conversion on rear too

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0382.jpg

Next up I decided to get the cooling system all piped up which is done now, and got the slam pannel bolted in. Also got rid of a bit more excess metal and had a play with the hole saw, which blunted very quickly despite loads of WD40! (only a cheap crappy one!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0383.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0385.jpg

Then turned my attention to my oil cooler. Had 2 standard astra ones, one of which was binned as it was in rubbish condition. The pipes I wanted to use had banjo joints to the sandwich plate, but only had a short amount of rubber hose then the rest metal. Problem was this was too long so have decided to not run a cooler until some time in the future when I can afford one as I'd have to have pipes made up etc. So just fitted an oil filter!

Thats it for pics as I didn't take any today, sorry! But want to say a massive thanks to Alan (Prey) for his help today on the wiring. You are a legend, got so much done for me as I will be honest and say I didn't have a clue what to do or where to start!! lol So cheers mate, as said it's very much appreciated. Also cheers to Iainel for popping around to give us some abuse and a hand! :d

Started off by getting my rocker switch and push button start wired in, then stripped all the tape from the loom right into the engine bay. Next sorted out all the plugs to bin and what was needed. Then worked our way back into the car. Got lights all wired in and working, coil in and wired up, rev limiter ready to go in and made a start on a few wires the the tacho on the vapour dash. Just got the rest of the dash wires to finish, kill switch and fuel pump and pretty much ready to think about getting it running then :d

Well pleased with what you got done dude can't thankyou enough, hope the parts come in handy for your nova :thumb:

No worries mate - anytime - thanks for the stuff! I always seem to womble things, quite a bad habit sometimes, also would cheerfully have adopted your puppy, reminded me of when mine were little!

Thought we would have got more done tbh but if you're clearer on what you need to get to get finished then it's all good. We just need to literally connect the wires on the coil, then sort the dash/pump/battery/starter cabling like you say and it will be good to go.

Hopefully will have mine sorted this wkend (fingers crossed) so will be able to flick down in that next time and try to convert you to the benefits of megajolt lol....

Alan, sounds good, we'll take a trip to the auto electric place and pick up the last few bits I need and as said there's not too much left to do. I'm still well pleased with what you got done already, its a massive step for the car  looking forward to seeing the nova too :thumb:

Astra still going and not died yet, just seems to be eating CV boots at the moment. I drove it to Billing and back without any issues but I nearly lost my hearing as it's so loud with the straight cut final drive and no sound deadening.

I know it's small but could you not tap a thread onto it. What is the coil off?

Have a look through Car Builder Solutions (http://www.nfauto.co.uk/) catalogue as they might have something that will fit.

Coil came from Gazz on here from this nova here:

I have pm'd & Emailed him in hope he gets back to me and lets me know how he wired it up, fingers crossed as bearing in mind it was over 2 years ago since I bought it from him!! lol lol

Harvey

The coil must use something similar to the later spec HT leads with the center pin DIS pack connector, see pic below. You might be able to mod the end of a HT lead and solder a wire on. Got a spare dead lead here if you want a play, let me know and I'll drop it round for you.

Another part of the puzzle sorted.

Got my battery cables from Olly when he broke his car, but wasn't too keen on the audio fuse holder to join two pieces of cable and the overkill 3 ton connections, so saved some weight and improved the connections for a few quid by visiting vehicle wiring products in Ilkeston. Very helpful people and have everything possible for car electrics. There web address has appeared in my thread once but won't hurt again for anyone trying to sort electrics. Whilst there I also picked up an earth braid for the gearbox, some rubber grommets and a rivet gun

www.vehicleproducts.co.uk

Yellow Earth Cable (The guy even used yellow heat shrink!), Battery lead now joined and heat shrunk, and last part of battery lead which bridges from kill switch to starter motor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/photo-4.jpg

The offending HEAVY weight connections vs. A new light weight connection properly crimped on and heat shrunk!

Do get me wrong you might have more then one pull for the extinguisher, but im sure that it should be mounted internally maybe on the cage near the drive, so if you smell smoke/see fire YOU can pull it to put it out instantly, not stop get out then do it from out side, as most marshals on track days wont get to you in time either...

I have the same set up and i will be plumbing it in within the cabin/driver reach.

Seeing as the wife's watching Pap-Factor I thought I'd add a bit more on here...

First things first I decided to have a look at the radiator to manifold clearence as I wasn't happy with how little space there was.

Just as a reminder here is how it was

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/1.jpg

I re-drilled a new hole and fitted a rubber grommet that was the correct size for the rad's leg...

It now has more than enough clearance. (You can see the standard grommet where it was sat)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0630.jpg

Had to knock up a new top hose, but lucky had some hose with the right bends :)

Whilst the bumper was off I gave the tow eyes a splash of red

Bit of an update with this, the wiring nightmare continues! lol

I've got the engine earthed now and the starter and alternator wired up. We've had the engine turning over on the starter button, and also tried a plug in a lead from the coil to see if we have a spark, and sadly no joy :(

We have a live and an earth at the coil but no joy...

Also still having probs with the digi-dash. Got no alternator light or oil pressure light even though there all plugged in and wired up. Also getting a slight live about 6volts back feeding to the indicator light on the dash which means its always slightly illuminated

At the minute were going to try a standard dash first to see if we are still having probs. Also got the fuel pump wired in and working via a separate switch (Thanks Alan :) )

So getting there bit by bit, but its just a case of sorting one thing out at a time.

Been collecting a few bits too, got a top tint windscreen and a mk2 dash carcass, aswell as some redstuff ceramic pads for the front.

Pins 1&2&4 go to hall effect sensor

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/dfc8442f.jpg

Pins 3&6 of amplifier plug ( pink and think brown go to coil)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/9bf06b58.jpg

Pin 5 of the 6 pin amplifier plug is then earthed on the body with or next to the brown earth for head lights

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/4e9fbce6.jpg

I'm sure wire colours are different but you can easily follow to get yours to work! Oh and run an ignition 12v supply to + side of coil (I ran mine from ignition switch so I knew I was getting good voltage easy to find need a wire that gets 12v when ignition is switch to position 2!) and the rev counter runs of negative side of coil straight to back of clocks

Seeing as the threads up again there has been some progress, but no pics I'm afraid. Got my brakes all on and bled up using ate racing super blue fluid, dot 4. Went for this over 5.1 as it has a boiling point.

Had probs with the banjos into the rear drums as everytime I pressed the pedal fluid was p*ssing out. Found the problem too be that the back of the wheel cylinder is not a perfectly flat machined surface, so the copper washer was not seating properly and completely squashing up so allowing fluid to leak. So went to some straight male euroquip unions with the M10 x 1mm thread.

Also had probs with the hydraulic handbrake. Turns out I put the lines on back to front lollol

So braking system is all sorted bar tweaking for a good bias.

nova ian

Well where do I start... Quite a big update :)

I've taken this week off work, and the intention is to get as much done on the nova as possible and with an aim to have it running by the end of the week. I've taken the car to a friends workshop where I've had alot of extra help and alot more room and tools to get jobs done! so here goes so far.

(Not too many pics though as I've been cracking on with stuff)

Car ready and waiting for a trailer ride

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0826.jpg

Got all the coil wiring sorted thanks to the pics from corsakid. Had a spark straight away. So much appreciated mate :d

Got the exhaust system on

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0841.jpg

Added a fan switch into the rad aswell as the manual switch I already have

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0837.jpg

Got the carbs all fastened on and connected up with throttle cable and fuel line & air filter etc...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0844.jpg

Got the coolant system filled up, and engine filled with oil

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0834.jpg

Then we bit the bullet and went for a start-up! was pretty nervous but went well really, got oil pressure whilst cranking, and as soon as the fuel made its way to the carbs it burst into life, how happy am I about that! :d

Here's a small vid I took o the first run up of the engine. Hopefully it works as I've not uploaded a video before

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/?action=view&current=IMG_0833.mp4

Ran it up again later on and got it up to temp and set the ignition timing and idle screw on carbs. Then after switching off we spotted something I didn't want to see at the end of a good days work. Big puddle of oil under the car :(

Investigated the leak this morning and it turned out to be the oil pressure sender unit not being tight enough. So added a copper washer as there wasn't one on and nipped it up and problem was solved :d

Topped the oil back up and then took it for a test drive around the yard to check gear linkage setup and clutch. All went well, nothing fell off and it drove quite well considering nothing has been properly setup :d

Sadly tonight ended in a similar way and we have spotted another oil leak :(

Its not loads compared to the last but I'd say more than 10 drips in less than 5 minutes of being stationary. It's coming from high up. The top of the drivers side engine mount bracket had oil on, and it looks like it's coming from behind the cam belt back plate too. Wondering if it could be the front cams oil seal behind the pulley. Need to investigate further tomorrow but any ideas welcome!

Only other issue that we've spotted is that the exhaust manifold from cylinder 3 hasn't burnt off as much paint as any of the others, (see pic below) which suggests its not running properly on this pot. Doesn't sound like its only running on 3 so again unsure what this could be. Any ideas on what to check for this too would be greatly appreciated

Whip the belt cover off and run the engine up to temp again with a few throttle blasts to help pressure the engine and please your ears drums. It could just be the rocker cover gasket hasn't sealed in the corners behind the cam pulleys or, as you have said, cam shaft seals not installed correctly or damaged during install. I recommend you install the rocker cover rubber gasket dry but pop a small amount of sealer in the corners behind the pulleys and the far end of the head near the half moor cutouts. Just tighten it hand tight and don’t go too mad. You can reuse the gasket a few times as well.

Iain said you had made good progress, Cool to see it coming together. Two white track novas done in the same year?! (Presuming Iain dont get even more anal)

I agree with the rocker cover needing a bit of sealer on the end caps.

Thanks for the comments guys, it's really come together & took shape this week, and having a little drive of it has really spurred me on and wanting a trackday soon!!

Had another look at the oil leak today, and now not sure if it's coming from the crank pulley aswell as higher up, it's really annoying as the timing belt back cover is in the way to see clearly where the leaks from.

Today I've also got all the lights working. Got the bonnet on with 4 bonnet pins. Back bumper on, which needed cutting out for the exhaust. Fuel sender wires on, and all the battery lines p-clipped in. Was expecting some CDS to arrive to make some door bars but it's still not here yet :(

So one last push tomorrow to get as much done before I bring it home at the weekend and break it for parts :) lol just kidding the noise of them carbs has got me hooked!

Haha is that all the paint burning off in the vid? Car looks awesome now its "almost complete" looking.

Am I right in thinking running lean makes it run too hot? So it could potentially be overfueling in #3? (Just guessing!)

nova ian
27-01-11, 06:41 PM
Yea the smoke is the paint burning off the exhaust, and as for the fuelling point you could be right for all I know! Lol that will be sorted on setup though if it is the problem. I'm more worried about this oil leak at the mo :(

Sure its not the bottom pully seal and then being thrown up by the pully etc?

Well think this week has been very productive, and now I don't want to go to work on monday now... Just want to work on the nova all week again lol

Here's a few pictures of stuff that's been done, as I was slack on photo's during the week!

Battery in and power cables P-clipped in

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0859.jpg

Engine Bay as it stands with strut brace fitted. Had to do it the wrong way round to clear the carbs. Also fastened the extinguisher nozzles onto the brace

Brakes all on & working

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0882.jpg

Carbon Fibre heater blank rivetted & sealed in place

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0868.jpg

Small mirror fitted... But not happy with it at all. Can't see it from in the car as the roll cage is in the way and even if I could it shakes like mad so wouldn't be able to see bugger all anyway. So think I'm going to go for some standard black nova mirrors

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0866.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0867.jpg

Ohh no its dirty! :( lol lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0877.jpg

And this is the area of the oil leak. I tried tightening the sump bolts a little more and the leak did slow a bit but its still coming out. But I'm not convinced that it is the sump because the oil is getting on the timing belt back cover

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0870.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/IMG_0871.jpg

Also there seems to be some oil on the top of the engine mount bracket too, but cam seals seem dry

That's pretty much up to date... Next up is to sort this digital dash out and get the oil pressure and fuel level gauge in and start tidying stuff up aswell as a spanner check. Then it will be in for the carbs to be setup

Done some more on this over the past couple of weeks, but not got any pics.

Stripped the timing belt off to investigate the oil leak, and thought it was the crank seal as it didn't look to be seated properly. So ordered a new one, fitted it along with a bead of sealant around the outer edge, rebuilt it all and ran it up, and it's still leaking as bad! Don't think it's the crank seal though as it's deffonatley coming from higher up. We saw a big drip from the thermostat housing onto the ledge of the engine mount. It deffo wasn't water either... Really annoying as the cam seals look to be dry, rocker cover gasket looks dry too. And can't see it being from between the head and block (touch wood and everything crossed anyway!!)

I'm going to strip the timing belt off again and get the back plate off, reassemble without it or the alt belt and run it up again so I have a clear view of the side of the engine and hopefully be able to spot something. Really disheartening though as I'm so close to completion now :(

Also semi got the digi dash working with thanks to Iain and his multi meter! Cheers mate. Gave the drivers side floor and footwell a lick of fresh paint aswell the back bench area as I had a slight brake fluid leak a while back. Seats & harnesses are all back in and even put my helmet hammock in aswell which I got for Xmas 2 years ago lol

Yep, although not tried the rev counter yet.

As for sender I'm going to have a fiddle with the connections and hopefully some of your luck with the same problem will rub off on mine!! If not have to look at getting a new sender although its 40 quid that could have gone to better thing :(

Small update, not got any further with finding the oil leak, thats sundays job!

Decided to have a go at DIY flocking! I got a frost flocking kit off Iain and decided to flock the dash pod, heater vent & clock section and also the headlight switch part. I knew the DIY method wasn't brilliant but for the cost i'm quite happy with the results...

Took one piece of dash & gave it a rub down with 600 grit wet & dry

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock1.jpg

Degreased with some pannel wipe
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock2.jpg

Said flocking kit. Thanks Iain!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock2a.jpg

Lather some glue on & squeeze some flock over and job done!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock4.jpg

The corner of this one didn't come out great so will dab a bit more glue on and redo it once dry
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/NovaFlock5.jpg

I'm pretty happy with the results so far, have to see what it dries like. But my god its a messy job!!

Also here's a couple of pics of a few other bits I've done on the car (Sorry for poor quality! I'll get some better ones on sunday)

Wiper on and setup, Also seats back in with harnesses

Door Bars and floor painted

More investigation into the oil leak today, and fingers & toes and everything else crossed, I think I've found the problem!!

Stripped timing belt off again

Looks like its the camshaft oil seals leaking.... On the pictures I've circled where you can see some oil that has collected on the bottom edges of the seal seats. The exahust cam looks to be the worst as I can see from the back plate that its running down the back onto the top of the engine mount. This would also make sense as to why I saw the drops of oil from the thermostat housing.

Anyways some pics...

Inlet cam oil seal
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/inletcam.jpg

Exhaust cam oil seal

And oil that has collected on the top of engine mount
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/mount.jpg

On the plus side the crankshaft seal we did last week looks to be nice and dry now :d

So until I get some new seals next week I left it at this point and just gave everywhere a wipe down. Next up I painted up the mirror covers from the mirrors I got from Countvaux, cheers for them James :thumb:

Nice and bright!

I was just flicking through your diary and thought to myself how old/what sort of mileage have the cams done?

Could it be that the cams are worn where the seals sit and it’s actually the cams at fault and not the seals. It could also be the end cap not sealed properly. I would remove the seals and take the end cap off. Check the cam for wear at the location of the seal, pop a new seal on and then smear the underside of the end caps face to head with sealer to make sure oil isn't leaking there. Job done and happy days no more leaks, fingers crossed for you.

nova ian
09-03-11, 12:19 PM
Hey Harvey, I can't remember what sort of mileage the engine has done. However when rebuilding I was told by a couple of people in the know that it's insides were in very good condition.

I did do the cam seals last weekend and have conquered the oil leak from the cams, however the Crank still looks to be seeping slightly, so just going to keep my eye on that for now. Just need to get my wiring finished for the dash... Especially having a little accident and frying my fuel pump wire! Not good!

Also cheers to Iain for giving me hand
